The text examines the connections and intersections that exist among the three topics set out in the title. First, the logic of extractivist practices as the dominant expression of the accumulation model of this time, its effects on territories and ways of life, and the intense process of hybridization of a nature exiled from social processes (Whatmore, 2002). Second, the construction of a ‘single world’ and the dispossession of relational geographies; Finally, the conflicts of valuation about these natures, understood according to this reading key, as part of opposing political ontologies exercised by the different actors who take an active part in them. El texto examina las conexiones e intersecciones que existen entre los tres tópicos enunciados en el título. Por un lado, la lógica de las prácticas extractivistas como expresión dominante del modelo de acumulación de este tiempo, sus efectos sobre los territorios y las formas de vida y el intenso proceso de hibridación de una naturaleza exiliada de los procesos sociales (Whatmore, 2002); por otro lado, la construcción de un “mundo único” y la desposesión de las geografías relacionales. Y finalmente, los conflictos de valoración acerca de esas naturalezas, entendidas según esta clave de lectura, como parte de ontologías políticas contrapuestas ejercidas por los diferentes actores que hacen parte activa en ellos. This article explores the implications of understanding war crime trials as hybrid legal spaces. Drawing on twelve months of residential fieldwork in the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, it examines the circulation of evidence, the choreography of the courtroom, and the nature and possibilities for legal observation. Analyzing hybrid legal geographies foregrounds the material and embodied nature of trials, illuminating the forms of comportment, categorization, and exclusion through which law establishes its legitimacy. Rather than emphasizing separation and distance, the lens of hybridity illuminates the multiple ways in which war crimes trials are grounded in the social and political context of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Consequently, this analysis traces the disjuncture between the imagined geographies of legal jurisdiction and the material and embodied spaces of trial practices. In conclusion, we argue that the establishment of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina illustrates the tensions that emerge when an institution of trial justice is used to strengthen the coherence of a postconflict state. Heated exchanges between critical theorists and GIScientists over geographic information systems (GIS) in 1990s geography gave rise to calls for increased communication between critics and practitioners of the technology and most recently for “hybrid” qualitative-quantitative GIS practices. Although GIS scholars have successfully addressed mid-1990s critiques of the technology by developing a series of critical GIS practices that involve nuanced and reflexive deployments of GIS and assessments of its visual products, theoretical critiques of GIS remain fixated on the epistemological deficiencies of the technology. Despite references to loosening metaphysical tensions across the discipline, this difference in assessments reveals the discourses of critical-theoretic geography and GIScience to remain separated by a trenchant philosophical divide, across which ontological and epistemological commitments are inviolable. The inability to fully reconcile a critical-theoretic epistemology with the explicitly ontological metaphysics of GIS further complicates qualitative engagements with the technology by addressing a series of inconsistencies into GIS praxis arising from the quantitative limits to representation encountered in the formal universe of computing. The persistence of metaphysical tensions in critical engagements with the technology questions the degree to which qualitative methods can be seamlessly hybridized with the quantitative architectures of GIS. This paper investigates nature-society relationships through the socio-spatial practices of ecotourism. Drawing on Whatmore's ideas of 'hybrid geographies', we examine the embodied experiences of kayakers participating in ecotours in Krabi Province, Thailand. Calling upon relational materiality, particular attention is given to the corporeal mobilities and experiences to explore performing ecotourism natures of the kayaker. Our case study provides a lens through which to explore methods for engaging with the sensuous worlds. Our results suggest that in the performances of enacting ecotourism geographies, kayakers are unable to move beyond the bounds of the natural premised on its separation from the human realm.
