Instruments to measure sex role standards of reading, readiness to assume feminine attributes, and reading achievement were developed and administered to 78 first grade boys. The treatment designed to masculinize reading consisted of three elements: (1) a weekly 20-minute exposure to a narrated slide presentation showing male figures in prestigious roles promoting reading; (2) middle school males tutoring in reading; and (3) beginning reading materials that contained stories written and illustrated so as to have particular appeal to boys. One half of the subjects were exposed to this treatment and the other half to literary experiences which afforded them comparable attention but which were not designed to affect their sex role standards of reading. Findings indicated (1) that the treatment, though not affecting the reading achievement of the subjects as a whole, did influence the achievement of boys with comparatively low reading readiness; (2) that reading was sex typed as feminine by the subjects; (3) that the first grade school setting tended to engender this sex typing; and (4) that the treatment seemed to be effective in counteracting this tendency. Three epoxy mortar materials are subjected to failure tests in compression and split‐cylinder tension over a temperature range of −35°–200°F. The tests are completed using 76.22‐mm‐ (3‐in.) diameter, 152.4‐mm‐ (6‐in.‐)long cylinders and failed specimens are examined using a microscope. Axial and radial strains are measured during the compressive tests to determine the compressive modulus and Poisson's ratio. All three mortar materials exhibit an apparent linear relationship between ultimate compressive strength and temperature. The split‐cylinder tensile test results show that tensile strength varies linearly with temperature at temperatures below the glass transition region. The compressive modulus is found to increase with decreasing temperatures. The mode of failure also varies with temperature, and microscopic examination of fracture surfaces reveals that fracture occurs at the epoxy‐aggregate interface and within the epoxy itself. To enable prediction of the strength of polymer mortars, a failure model is presented. Based on the so‐called Arrhenius kinetic rate equation, a compound dual failure criteria is developed. The proposed model considers the visco‐elastic nature of the class of materials manifested by the dependence of their strength on loading rates and temperature. The model also accounts for the class's dual failure modes as a rock/soil/concrete‐type material, i.e., failure in compressive shear and/or tensile cleavage. Experiments were performed with mortar specimens using several different epoxy binders. Benchmark values of parameters of the proposed failure model are presented. Within the range of temperatures and loading rates used in the experiments, the model appears to comply well with experimental data. It is anticipated that a similar failure model can be used for mortars made with other types of polymer binders and for polymer concrete in general.
