Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

New data on the distribution of the Asian alien species Branchiura sowerbyi (Oligochaeta: Naididae) were reported for Bulgaria. During the period 2012-2020, the species was found in 40 lotic and lentic water bodies (17 rivers and 23 reservoirs and lakes). Eight new inhabited water bodies of different types (4 reservoirs, 2 natural lakes and 2 rivers) were registered. The spread of the species in relation to environmental parameters was analysed. The ecological preferences of the B. sowerbyi showed a great adaptability and tolerance towards water temperature and oxygen concentration as well characteristics of the water bodies' type. Abstract

Long-term trends of the ecological status assessed by biological quality element macrozoobenthos, of the transboundary Mesta River (South Bulgaria) during the period 1978-2020 were analyzed. Macrozoobenthos samples were taken and physico-chemical parameters were measured twice at 7 sites situated on the main river and its tributaries during the low water period (August-September 2019 and 2020). Selected sites represented various ecological situations that are characterized by different types of human impact. Data on the current status of the river were compared with the last studied periods 2009-2010. The investigation was an extension of long-term research of the Mesta River that associated the river with the European Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER). During the last decades, the self-purification processes and recovery of the bottom invertebrate communities and processes of stabilization of the aquatic ecosystem have been observed, after stopping the heavy organic pollution from industries in the Razlog town. This resulted in improvement of the water quality and the Mesta River ecological status. The current study demonstrated local sources of load on the aquatic ecosystem (agriculture, lack of urban wastewater treatment plants), which has a negative effect on the ecological situation in the river. Measures aimed at stimulating environmentally friendly agricultural practices and the construction of treatment plants are needed to preserve the integrity of the aquatic ecosystem and to maintain the regulated good ecological status. 16. Macroinvertebrate Communities of sub-Mediterranean Intermittent Rivers in Bulgaria: Association with Environmental Parameters and Ecological Status.

Abstract

Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams drain more than 50% of the land surface on Earth. Yet, their ecology remains insufficiently understood. In Bulgaria, temporary rivers are typically small- or medium-sized rivers (national type R14), flowing in areas with sub-Mediterranean climate. We present the first data focused explicitly on macrozoobenthos from intermittent rivers in four Bulgarian river basins within the drainage of the Aegean Sea. We identified 114 taxa from nine rivers (5÷33 taxa/site), with abundance varying between 61 and 994 ind.m-2. The most common were taxa of Ephemeroptera and Chironomidae, followed by the crab Potamon ibericum. There were considerable differences among macroinvertebrates at different sites at taxon level, with similarities among samples increasing when using lower taxonomic resolution. The distinctness of communities was likely a reflection of the high variability in environmental conditions and local human impacts. Redundancy analysis identified key groups for the sites with fast flow (e.g. Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera Varia, taxa associated with altitude and the higher share of stone substrata). Most of the river sites were classified as having high ecological status according to the Bulgarian legislation. Only the sites in the Vrabcha and Dereorman Rivers were with moderate status; these were the sites with the lowest taxon richness. We could speculate that the structuring of the benthic community was affected by other factors that have not been accounted for in the present study, i.e. great annual fluctuations in river flow, characteristic for R14, or by loading with nutrients or other pollutants. Abstract

Hydrobiological monitoring and assessment of ecological status (potential) of eight Bulgarian reservoirs wеre carried out in 2015-2016. The water bodies are located in Ecoregion 7: West (Pchelina Reservoir) and East Aegean River Basins (Chetiridesette Izvora, Konush and Sinyata Reka Reservoirs) and Ecoregion 12: Danube River Basin (Bebresh, Telish, Gorni Dabnik and Sopot Reservoirs). We assessed their ecological potential based on hydrochemical parameters, Secchi disk transparency and chlorophyll a from pelagial samples. Semi - quantitative macrozoobenthic samples were collected from the littoral zone. We identified 102 macroinvertebrate taxa, including alien and (potentially) invasive species: Branchiura sowerbyi (Oligochaeta); Dikerogammarus villosus (Amphipoda); Dreissena polymorpha and Corbicula fluminea (Bivalvia). Based on the bioindicative role of macrozoobenthos, a set of biotic indices and metrics (Irish biotic index, total taxon number and the German trophic index PETI) were also used to estimate the ecological potential of the studied reservoirs. Our results demonstrated a mismatch between macroinvertebrate and abiotic assessment metrics. Therefore, further research is needed to improve the use of benthic macroinvertebrates as a biological quality element for the estimation of ecological potential of reservoirs in Bulgaria. Abstract

Bulgaria has joined the official intercalibration (IC) in order to complete the state commitments for the classification of rivers based on Biological Quality Elements (BQE). The objective of this paper was to verify whether the present Bulgarian classification method for ecological status of large lowland (national type R7) and medium-sized lowland (national type R8) rivers was compliant with the normative definitions of the Water Framework Directive. Thus, a two-year study (2014 - 2015) on macroinvertebrate communities was conducted at 43 sites (18 from R7 and 25 from R8). Differences in qualitative and quantitative composition in the above-mentioned river types, as well as indicative potential of BQE in relation to different anthropogenic pressures were analysed. Based on alternative benchmark sites (identified using the criteria defined by the EU), the High/ Good boundary and a reference value for the Biotic index were defined. Class boundaries were in line with the results of the completed intercalibration exercise. We found a significant association between the biotic index and all three groups of pressures (land use, chemistry and hydro-morphology) and these results could be used for assessment of the ecological status. The national assessment method (based on our data) was in good agreement with the accepted methods from other member states who share the same river types within the Eastern Continental Geographical Intercalibration Group (EC-GIG). Surveys on benthic macroinvertebrate communities of ten standing water bodies (Bezbog, Kalin, Choklyovo marsh, Bistraka, Dospat, Stoykovtsi, Drenov dol, Pchelina, Dolna Dikanya, Dyakovo) were conducted in the period July-August 2018. They were chosen to represent natural (lakes) characterized with reference conditions as well as artificial and heavily modified water bodies (dams). They were associated with earlier data for three dams (Studena, Pyasachnik, Ovchi kladenets), studied over the period 2013-2017. The standing waters fall into the West and East Aegean Basin districts and belong to all types of water bodies (identified according to the Bulgarian typology) located in the Ecoregion 7 (L1-Glacial high-mountain lakes/ Alpine lakes, L3-Mountain lakes, L4-Lowland and semi-mountain lakes and swamps, L6-Riverside wetlands, L11-Large deep reservoirs, L13-Medium-size and small semi-mountain reservoirs, L15 Large lowland reservoirs up to middle depth, L17-Small and medium size reservoirs). A current evaluation based on the values of the measured physicochemical parameters, regulated by the national water legislation was made. Four experimental biological metrics - Total number of taxa, Biotic index for slow-flowing river stretches, percentage of Oligocheata and PETI were applied to assess the ecological status of the studied water bodies. The Biotic index is leading in the evaluation, others metrics have a supportive role. The lack of type-specific scales of the indices used, insufficiently long ranges of data sets on which to test the methods as well as the anthropogenically induced fluctuations at the water level which affects the distribution of macrozoobenthos in the sampling littoral zone are the main difficulties for a more precise assessment of the ecological status/potential of standing water bodies in Bulgaria. Abstract

The reservoirs Ovcharitsa and Byal Kladenets are part of the hydrotechnical complex used to supply and recirculate waters for additional cooling for the coal/steam electric power station Maritsa Iztok II in South-Eastern Bulgaria. The water used as a coolant is withdrawn from the dam part of the Ovcharitsa reservoir and returned to the Byal Kladenets from where it flows back again into the middle sections of the Ovcharitsa reservoir. The average water temperature from Byal Kladenets reservoir is higher than the temperature in the Ovcharitsa reservoir during the whole year. The objective of this study was to represent the difference in the macrozoobenthos communities in these two hydrological connected reservoirs, according to some environmental parameters. The survey was based on samples taken in four occasions between April and August of 2013. Qualitative samples of benthic macroinvertebrates were taken according to the standard methods ISO 9391:1995 and EN 27828:1994. The species composition, monthly distribution pattern and abundance of the macrozoobenthos were studied. A total of 37 bottom invertebrates taxa in the Ovcharitsa reservoir and 31 taxa in the Byal Kladenets reservoir were established, 37 of them identified to a species level. The most abundant was class Oligochaeta, followed by Diptera: Chironomidae and Bivalvia. In nearly the same taxonomic composition, the results showed that the density and biomass in the cooler Ovcharitsa reservoir were several times higher than in the hotter Byal Kladenets reservoir. The highest values were measure?d in April in the Ovcharitsa reservoir, whereas during the same period the abundance and biomass in the Byal Kladenets reservoir were the lowest.
