CeO2 surfaces play decisive roles in heterogeneous catalysis of important processes. Here, we investigate adsorption and dissociation of water and migration of protons on internal surfaces of nanoscopic porous CeO2. Sorption and thermogravimetry confirm literature suggestions that the surface is hydrogenated to Ce3+ ions and protons H+. The following chemisorption is dissociative, yet weak, and physisorption sets in only at the very highest relative humidities, reflecting hydrophobic behaviour. We link sample conductivities to surface protonic conductances via a brick layer model and show that behaviours at high, intermediate, and low temperatures with, respectively, positive, close to zero, and negative apparent activation energies and pH2O^(1/2), pH2O^1, and pH2O^(3/2) dependences, can be attributed to different models of migration all within the chemisorbed layer, without contribution from physisorbed water. While CeO2 may special in this respect due to the effect of the hydrogenated surface, we believe the extended models of transport in the chemisorbed layer may apply also to other oxides. Unsaturated chemisorption may play an important role for CeO2 as catalyst in that the surface is left available for reactant molecules, still with availability of dissociated and mobile protons in the chemisorbed layer and electronic defects by Ce3+ in the surface.

We have monitored the regeneration of H-ZSM-5 via operando time-resolved powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD) coupled with mass spectroscopy (MS). Parametric Rietveld refinements and calculation of the extra-framework electronic density by differential Fourier maps analysis provide details on the mode of coke removal combined with the corresponding sub-unit cell changes of the zeolite structure. It is clear that the coke removal is a complex process that occurs in at least two steps; a thermal decomposition followed by oxidation. In a coked zeolite, the straight 10-ring channel circumference is warped to an oval shape due to structural distortion induced by rigid aromatic coke species. The data presented explain why the difference in length between the a-vector and the b-vector of the MFI unit cell is a robust descriptor for bulky coke, as opposed to the unit cell volume, which is affected also by adsorbed species and thermal effects. Our approach holds the promise to quantify and identify coke removal (and formation) in structurally distinct locations within the zeolite framework.

We have used operando X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT) analysed by rigorous crystallographic methods to reveal the behaviour of a zeolite/alumina based catalyst extrudate in the methanol-to-hydrocarbon reaction under working conditions (Treaction = 440 °C; ambient total pressure; WHSV = 12 gMeOH gextrudate−1 h−1). By doing so, we demonstrate that it is possible to precisely monitor how the cylindrical extrudate is deactivated during the process by gradual filling with coke from the outer surface towards the core. The operando data thus collected are simulated by a model taking both the reaction kinetics and the diffusion within the extrudate into account, and this analysis provides the tools required for future optimization of the degree of utilization of the catalyst. Both the operando experiment and post mortem XRD-CT of fully deactivated extrudates from a test reactor show clearly that the core of the catalyst body, around 1/3 of its volume, remains completely untouched by the reaction, even when the reactor output indicates zero activity.

Hydrogen is essential in a variety of large-scale chemical processes. As a carbon-free energy carrier, hydrogen has a potential for wide use within power production and transportation. However, most of the recent production methods involve the release of CO2 as a by-product. Hence, decarbonization of hydrogen production is one step to reduce CO2 emission into the Earth's atmosphere. Several process schemes have been suggested for low-carbon emission production of hydrogen. In this work, we show how to improve solid sorbents for the sorption-enhanced water-gas shift (SEWGS) process, which is a process that exploits a solid sorbent in the water-gas shift reactor to capture CO2 in situ and drive the process toward an improved hydrogen yield. We report herein a series of Co(x)Mg(3-)xAl materials based on hydrotalcites, promoted with various loadings of K. The materials have been characterized by BET, XRD, and NMR and tested for their CO2 adsorption performance in three adsorption-desorption cycles in a lab-scale fixed-bed reactor (20-22 bar, CO2 + steam as reactant gas, and isothermal conditions at 375 and 400 degrees C). The most promising material was subjected to a long-term test (120 adsorption-desorption cycles at similar conditions). This test indicates that a K-promoted Co1.5Mg1.5Al (22 wt % of added K2CO2 to the oxide) material has a higher cyclic capacity for CO2 than standard reference cases. We have estimated that the volumetric capacity (in mol/L unit) of this sorbent will be 23-26% higher than a standard reference material at 400 degrees C and 30-39% higher at 375 degrees C. This would, in fixed-bed columns, lead to significant reduction in the needed column volumes in the final process and reduce costs.

Silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs) are a special class of zeolites that, due to their acidic and shape-selective properties, play a major role in ion exchange and separation processes and in crude oil cracking. SAPO-37 has the faujasite (FAU) topology same as zeolites X and Y, which are involved in more than 40% of the total crude oil conversion worldwide. A critical parameter that promotes detrimental structural transformations in SAPOs during real-life applications is the presence of humidity. In this study, we employ a multidisciplinary approach combining in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (SR-PXRD), water adsorption, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to describe the mechanism and reveal the reasons why SAPO-37 collapses upon contact with humidity below 345 K. SR-PXRD revealed that the sodalite (SOD) cages (subunits of the FAU structure) have the strongest affinity to water during hydration below 345 K. Furthermore, below 345 K, the faujasite framework takes up an order of magnitude more water molecules than at temperatures above 345 K. DRIFTS confirmed the presence of Si−OH and P−OH surface structural defects that act as hydration centers, accelerating the loss of a long-range order. Finally, DFT calculations showed that the enthalpy of water adsorption in the sodalite cage and the faujasite supercage is −212 and −13 kJ/mol, respectively. The results presented in this work are highly topical for understanding the effect of water on the frameworks of the SAPO microporous catalysts family. The notorious instability of SAPO-37 is the result of the accumulative contribution of topological, physical, and chemical effects, leading to an array of rapidly evolving cascading effects. Our work shows how advancements in SR-PXRD methodology and hardware give new insight into highly dynamic features previously difficult to observe. In addition, this work introduces the conceptual insight that nonhomogeneous sorption of molecular species will induce dynamic features with dramatic consequences at both molecular and atomic levels. This is a highly impactful factor opening research paths for further work within catalysis, porous material design and chemistry, and sorption reactions and processes.

Design and development of novel inorganic nanocarriers for encapsulation of natural antimicrobial substances for food packaging applications have received great interest during the last years. Natural nanoclays are the most investigated nanocarriers and recently interest has also grown in the synthetically produced porous silica particles. However, these different carrier matrices have not been compared in terms of their loading capability and subsequent release. In this study, the feasibility of porous silica particles (with different pore structures and/or surface functionalities) and commercially available nanoclays were evaluated as encapsulation matrices. Two well-studied antimicrobial substances, thymol and curcumin, were chosen as volatile and non-volatile model compounds, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency, and the subsequent dispersibility and release, of these substances differed significantly among the nanocarriers. Encapsulation of the volatile compound highly depends on the inner surface area, i.e., the protective pore environment, and an optimal nanocarrier can protect the encapsulated thymol from volatilization. For the non-volatile compound, only the release rate and dispersibility are affected by the pore structure. Further, water-activated release of the volatile compound was demonstrated and exhibited good antimicrobial efficacy in the vapor phase against Staphylococcus aureus. This comparative study can provide a base for selecting the right nanocarrier aimed at a specific food packaging application. No nanocarrier can be considered as a universally applicable one.

In order to improve the suitability of NaBH4 as a clean fuel, its decomposition temperature needs to be decreased to below 535 &deg, C, while its hydrogen release must be as high as possible. In this work, the influence of a collection of first and second period transition metal fluorides on the destabilization of NaBH4 is studied on samples produced by ball milling NaBH4 with 2 mol% of a metal fluoride additive. The effects obtained by increasing additive amount and changing oxidation state are also evaluated for NbF5, CeF3, and CeF4. The as-milled products are characterized by in-house power X-ray diffraction, while the hydrogen release and decomposition are monitored by temperature programmed desorption with residual gas analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. The screening of samples containing 2 mol% of additive shows that distinctive groups of transition metal fluorides affect the ball milling process differently depending on their enthalpy of formation, melting point, or their ability to react at the temperatures achieved during ball milling. This leads to the formation of NaBF4 in the case of TiF4, MnF3, VF4, CdF2, NbF5, AgF, and CeF3 and the presence of the metal in CrF3, CuF2, and AgF. There is no linear correlation between the position of the transition metal in the periodic table and the observed behavior. The thermal behavior of the products after milling is given by the remaining NaBH4, fluoride, and the formation of intermediate metastable compounds. A noticeable decrease of the decomposition temperature is seen for the majority of the products, with the exceptions of the samples containing YF3, AgF, and CeF3. The largest decrease of the decomposition temperature is observed for NbF5. When comparing increasing amounts of the same additive, the largest decrease of the decomposition temperature is observed for 10 mol% of NbF5. Higher amounts of additive result in the loss of the NaBH4 thermal signal and ultimately the loss of the crystalline borohydride. When comparing additives with the same transition metal and different oxidation states, the most efficient additive is found to be the one with a higher oxidation state. Furthermore, among all the samples studied, higher oxidation state metal fluorides are found to be the most destabilizing agents for NaBH4. Overall, the present study shows that there is no single parameter affecting the destabilization of NaBH4 by transition metal fluorides. Instead, parameters such as the transition metal electronegativity and oxidation state or the enthalpy of formation of the fluoride and its melting point are competing to influence the destabilization. In particular, it is found that the combination of a high metal oxidation state and a low fluoride melting point will enhance destabilization. This is observed for MnF3, NbF5, NiF2, and CuF2, which lead to high gas releases from the decomposition of NaBH4 at the lowest decomposition temperatures.

Coke formation is a major reason in deactivation of acidic zeolite catalysts in industrial processes such as methanol to hydrocarbons conversion. Protecting the surface of acidic zeolite with an inert porous shell can greatly hinder the coke formation on the surface, and hence boost the lifetime of the catalyst. In this work, a solid-state steam-assisted method for synthesis of such optimized protective shell (silicate-1, ~15 nm thickness) is designed. This general and simple protocol can be applied to acidic zeolite catalysts to improve their catalytic lifetime. The silicalite-1 shell is synthesized on mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite to explore its catalytic activity in methanol to hydrocarbons conversion. XPS and TEM analysis confirm the coverage of mesoporous zeolite crystals by non-acidic shell. In addition, nitrogen physisorption shows the accessibility of mesoporous ZSM-5 via microporous silicalite-1 network. Applying this protective shell increases the lifetime of the catalyst by 100% and its conversion capacity by 130%, in comparison to mesoporous ZSM-5 without the shell. The controlled formation of thin layer of microporous silicalite-1 around mesoporous ZSM-5 crystals (without growth of individual silicalite-1) accounts for enhanced catalytic improvement.

In-situ flow magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) and synchrotron based pair distribution function (PDF) analyses have been applied to study water's interactions with the Bronsted acidic site and the surrounding framework up to 300 °C for NMR and 700 °C for PDF in the SAPO-34 catalyst. 29Si enrichment of the sample enabled detailed NMR investigations of the T-atom generating the Bronsted site. From NMR we observed dehydration above 100 °C and a coalescence of Si peaks due to local framework adjustments. Towards 300 °C NMR data indicate highly mobile acidic protons. In-situ total X-ray scattering measurements analyzed by PDF showed clear changes in the Al local environment in the 250 - 300 °C region as the Al-O bond lengths show a sudden change. This is in the same temperature range of increased Bronsted proton mobility. We suggest that the active site in this catalyst under industrial conditions comprises not only the Bronsted proton but also the SiO4. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work proposing a structural model of a SAPO catalyst by atomic PDF analysis. Combination of synchrotron PDF analysis with in-situ NMR, is a promising tool for revealing dynamic features of a working catalyst.

The sorbent enhanced water-gas shift (SEWGS) process has great potential for CO2 capture and is thereby a realistic alternative to conventional post-combustion capture by gas emission scrubbing. Nevertheless, better performing materials are required to make SEWGS competitive against state-of-the-art scrubbing technologies. Dawsonite, NaAl(OH)2CO3, has a high carbonate content and forms in situ during CO2 capture on alkali metal promoted alumina, thereby showing potential in variable temperature capture processes. For the isothermal SEWGS process the performance in pressure swing absorption is essential. We evaluate here synthetic Dawsonites [MAl(OH)2CO3, M = K, Na] as CO2 sorbents for the SEWGS process based on data from in situ X-ray diffraction, combined thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry, magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as high pressure fixed bed reactor tests at isothermal conditions. The results show that synthetic Dawsonites are promising sorbents for the SEWGS process, however, with moderate cyclic CO2 capacities (∼0.3–0.7 mmol CO2/g sorbent) in comparison to alkali-metal promoted hydrotalcites. On the other hand, the materials exhibit relatively fast sorption rates at low temperatures (280–310 °C), favoring the water-gas shift reaction in the SEWGS process.

In this study, hybrid mesoporous organosilicas (HMOs) were synthesized by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source and 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene (BTB) in various ratios of BTB to TEOS. The two extreme cases of 0 and 100 mol% BTB were compared with the partial addition of BTB (25 mol%) and the partial absence of TEOS (75 mol% BTB). The synthesized mesoporous materials were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction (PXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and helium pycnometry for the determination of skeletal density. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method was used for the determination of the specific surface area (SSA) and non-local density functional theory (NLDFT) calculations were employed for the determination of the pore size distribution (PSD). The hydrogen and methane sorption properties were investigated using a Sieverts apparatus under isothermal sorption equilibrium conditions at cryogenic and close to ambient temperatures, respectively. For hydrogen, the combination of phenyl rings with pores at the micro/mesopore border resulted in an increase in sorption capacity. The simultaneous presence of two different precursors increased the surface inhomogeneity, which led to a wider distribution of adsorption sites close to the micro/mesopore border, which favored the hydrogen sorption properties. The presence of the phenyl rings doubled the number of methane molecules that the material surface could accommodate. The partial substitution of TEOS by BTB (25 mol%) gave the same density of adsorbed methane as the non-hybrid material, which consisted of 100% BTB. The materials exhibited excellent reversibility and sorption stability upon aging. Their sorption performance was evaluated using the Toth model and was correlated with their structural characteristics. The fraction of micropores among the total number of pores was quantitatively correlated with the maximum storage capacity and the adsorbate–adsorbent interaction strength. Finally, for a low coverage of methane the enthalpy of adsorption was calculated by the Clausius–Clapeyron equation.

The deactivation of zeolite catalyst H-ZSM-5 by coking during the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons was monitored by high-energy space- and time-resolved operando X-ray diffraction (XRD) . Space resolution was achieved by continuous scanning along the axial length of a capillary fixed bed reactor with a time resolution of 10 s per scan. Using real structural parameters obtained from XRD, we can track the development of coke at different points in the reactor and link this to a kinetic model to correlate catalyst deactivation with structural changes occurring in the material. The “burning cigar” model of catalyst bed deactivation is directly observed in real time.

In order to mitigate climate change driven by the observed high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, many micro and nano-porous materials are being investigated for CO2 selectivity, capture and storage (CCS) purposes, including zeolites, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), functionalized polymers, activated carbons and nano-silicate clay minerals. Key properties include availability, non-toxicity, low cost, stability, energy of adsorption/desorption, sorbent regeneration, sorption kinetics and CO2 storage capacity. Here, we address the crucial point of the volumetric capture and storage capacity for CO2 in a low cost material which is natural, non-toxic, and stable. We show that the nano-silicate Nickel Fluorohectorite is able to capture 0.79 metric tons of CO2 per m3 of host material - one of the highest capacities ever achieved - and we compare volumetric and gravimetric capacity of the best CO2 sorbent materials reported to date. Our results suggest that the high capture capacity of this fluorohectorite clay is strongly coupled to the type and valence of the interlayer cation (here Ni2+) and the high charge density, which is almost twice that of montmorillonite, resulting in the highest reported CO2 uptake among clay minerals.

The reversible hydrogen desorption–absorption of γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ball milled with MoO 3 and TiO 2 has been investigated. No mechanochemical interaction between γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and TiO 2 was observed while for the 1:1 M ratio with MoO 3 , MoB 2 was formed. There was little difference in the properties of γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ball–milled with 0.02 mol percent TiO 2 and MoO 3 . However, mixing in the same ratio γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 with TiO 2 and MoO 3 that had previously been subjected to high energy milling provided significant effects. For these materials, the DSC peaks appeared broader and were shifted to slightly lower temperatures, while the TPD peaks were decreased by ca. 20 °C, as compared to the pure γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 . Faster hydrogen desorption kinetics was observed for the γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 –MoO 3 mixture. The reversible hydrogen storage capacity of γ–Mg(BH 4 ) 2 –TiO 2 at 271 °C was found to be 2.4 wt% H 2 in the first cycle.

Pre-combustion CO 2 capture technologies are becoming viable alternatives to more conventional post-combustion capture by gas emissions scrubbing. The sorbent enhanced water-gas shift (SEWGS) process is a promising future technology for CO 2 capture. However, the process needs better performing materials than those available today to be competitive against state-of-the-art scrubbing technologies. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are a promising class of materials to improve the performance of the SEWGS process. These materials have a general formula of M 2+ 1−x M 3+ x (OH) 2 (A n− ) x/n ·mH 2 O, and can be tuned by substituting the metal species, changing the M 2+ /M 3+ ratio, adjusting the synthesis parameters to influence morphology or by adding so-called promotors to improve performance. To aid an ongoing systematic study looking at several of these parameters we have developed a simple yet efficient way of screening materials for further in-depth studies. The method is highly suitable for a typical laboratory setting, and is based on thermogravimetric analysis combined with cyclic exposure to selected gases. In this article we present the results of applying the method to a selection of benchmark materials.

We have studied the structural behavior of SAPO-37 during calcination using simultaneous in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and mass spectroscopy (MS) in addition to ex situ thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A spike in the unit cell volume corresponding to template removal (tracked using the occupancy of the crystallographic sites in the SAPO-37 cages) is revealed from the XRD data and is strongly correlated with the DSC curve. The occupancy of the different template molecules in the faujasite (FAU) and sodalite (SOD) cages is strongly related to the two mass loss steps observed in the TGA data. The templates act as a physical stabilizing agent, not allowing any substantial unit cell response to temperature changes until they are removed. The FAU cages and SOD cages have different thermal response to the combustion of each template. The FAU cages are mainly responsible for the unit cell volume expansion observed after the template combustion. This expansion seems to be related with residual coke from template combustion. We could differentiate between the thermal response of oxygen and T-atoms. The T–O–T angle between two double 6-rings and a neighboring T–O–T linkage shared by SOD and FAU had different response to the thermal events. We were able to monitor the changes in the positions of oxygen and T-atoms during the removal of TPA+ and TMA+. Large changes to the framework structure at the point of template removal may have a significant effect on the long-term stability of the material in its activated form.

Novel hexagonal Periodic Mesoporous Organosilicas (PMOs) and Disordered Mesoporous Organosilicas (DMOs) were synthesized by hydrolysis of 1,4-bis(trialkoxylsilyl) benzene precursor in alkaline aqueous solutions of different alkyl-trimethyl ammonium cations and evaluated for their hydrogen storage capacity. The PMO materials exhibit regular hexagonal pore arrangement and specific surface area between 640 and 782 m2 g−1 whereas the DMO materials have specific surface area that lies between 650 and 910 m2 g−1. The storage capacity of the materials is discussed in terms of number of molecules per surface unit. The materials exhibit a reversible hydrogen excess surface adsorption capacity up to 2.10 wt% at 6 MPa and 77 K. DFT calculations were performed to define the binding strength of hydrogen with the pore walls indicated an interaction energy value of −0.55 Kcal mol−1, higher than the interaction energy value of hydrogen with a single benzene or a benzene incorporated in the IRMOR-1 walls. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations showed that no hydrogen molecule can be inserted inside the wall structure of the materials.

A good material for CO2 capture should possess some specific properties: (i) a large effective surface area with good adsorption capacity, (ii) selectivity for CO2, (iii) regeneration capacity with minimum energy input, allowing reutilization of the material for CO2 adsorption and (iv) low cost and high environmental friendliness. Smectite clays are layered nanoporous materials that may be good candidates in this context. Here we report experiments which show that gaseous CO2 intercalates into the interlayer nano-space of smectite clay (synthetic fluorohectorite) at conditions close to ambient. The rate of intercalation, as well as the retention ability of CO2 was found to be strongly dependent on the type of the interlayer cation, which in the present case is Li+, Na+ or Ni2+. Interestingly, we observe that the smectite Li-fluorohectorite is able to retain CO2 up to a temperature of 35°C at ambient pressure and that the captured CO2 can be released by heating above this temperature. Our estimates indicate that smectite clays, even with the standard cations analyzed here, can capture an amount of CO2 comparable to other materials studied in this context.

The effect of transition metal fluorides on the decomposition of NaBH4 has been investigated for NaBH4 ball milled with TiF3, MnF3 or FeF3. The compounds were examined by thermal programmed desorption with residual gas analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis and volumetric measurements using a Sieverts-type apparatus. The phase formation process during thermal decomposition was studied by in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction on the as-milled powders. NaBF4 was among the products in all mechano-chemical reactions. (11)B-NMR spectra analysis gave NaBF4 : NaBH4 ratios of 1 : 150 for Na-Ti, 1 : 40 for Na-Mn, and 1 : 10 for Na-Fe. Pure NaBH4 possessed a hydrogen release onset temperature of 430 °C. The hydrogen release in the NaBH4-MnF3 system began as low as 130 °C. FeF3 decreased the onset temperature to 161 °C and TiF3 to 200 °C. TiF3 reacted completely with NaBH4 below 320 °C. All the examined systems have negligible emissions of diborane species. H-sorption studies performed at selected temperatures above 300 °C exhibited relatively fast desorption kinetics. Partial hydrogen re-absorption was observed for the Na-Mn and Na-Fe samples.

2 LiNH2–1.1 MgH2–0.1 LiBH4–3 wt.% ZrCoH3 is a solid state hydrogen storage material with a hydrogen storage capacity of up to 5.3 wt.%. As the material shows sufficiently high desorption rates at temperatures below 200 °C, it is used for a prototype solid state hydrogen storage tank with a hydrogen capacity of 2 kWhel that is coupled to a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In order to design an appropriate prototype reactor, model equations for the rate of hydrogen sorption reactions are required. Therefore in the present study, several material properties, like bulk density and thermodynamic data, are measured. Furthermore, isothermal absorption and desorption experiments are performed in a temperature and pressure range that is in the focus of the coupling system. Using experimental data, two-step model equations have been fitted for the hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions. These empirical model equations are able to capture the experimentally measured reaction rates and can be used for model validation of the design simulations.

On the basis of DFT results on the ideal amount of Zn required to dissolute into the α-phase of Mg(BH4)2 (space group P6122) and experimental results recently presented in the literature, mixtures of α-Mg(BH4)2 and ZnCl2 have been prepared by ball-milling, reactive milling and cryo-milling in Mg:Zn starting ratios of 1:0.33, 1:0.2 and 1:0.1. Samples have been characterized with different experimental techniques (PXD, TGA, TPD with RGA and desorption kinetics in a Sieverts apparatus). All the as-milled samples exhibited a H2 release beginning approximately at 125 °C, indicating a significant decrease in the decomposition temperature compared to pure Mg(BH4)2. With the exception of the Mg(BH4)2−0.33ZnCl2 sample ball-milled under 1 bar Ar for 3 h that showed a small B2H6 release around 120 °C, all samples are free of B2H6 emissions. Results from desorption kinetics at 195 °C suggest a strong relation between the amount of ZnCl2 in the starting mixture and the weight loss.

The development of a volumetric apparatus (also known as a Sieverts’ apparatus) for accurate and reliable hydrogen adsorption measurement is shown. The instrument minimizes the sources of systematic errors which are mainly due to inner volume calibration, stability and uniformity of the temperatures, precise evaluation of the skeletal volume of the measured samples, and thermodynamical properties of the gas species. A series of hardware and software solutions were designed and introduced in the apparatus, which we will indicate as f-PcT, in order to deal with these aspects. The results are represented in terms of an accurate evaluation of the equilibrium and dynamical characteristics of the molecular hydrogen adsorption on two well-known porous media. The contribution of each experimental solution to the error propagation of the adsorbed moles is assessed. The developed volumetric apparatus for gas storage capacity measurements allows an accurate evaluation over a 4 order-of-magnitude pressure range (from 1 kPa to 8 MPa) and in temperatures ranging between 77 K and 470 K. The acquired results are in good agreement with the values reported in the literature.

After a screening of possible systems prone to give an enthalpy of decomposition close to 30 kJ mol H 2 - 1 , i.e. suitable for a dehydrogenation process close to room temperature and pressure, the Zn dissolution into Mg(BH4)2 has been investigated. The total energy of pure compounds and solid solutions has been computed by DFT calculations using the CRYSTAL09 code. To generate the Mg(1−x)Znx(BH4)2 solid solution, α-phase of Mg(BH4)2 (space group P6122) has been considered, with a replacement of Mg2+ with Zn2+ ions, without lowering the symmetry of the crystalline structure. On the basis of DFT results, the enthalpy of decomposition has been estimated, considering MgH2, Zn, α-B and H2 as products, and a value of 30 kJ mol H 2 - 1 has been calculated for x = 0.2. In order to verify the results of calculations, mixtures of Mg(BH4)2 and ZnCl2 with 1.0:0.7 ratio have been ball milled, both at room temperature and in cryo-conditions. Samples have been analyzed with a combination of experimental techniques (XRD, DSC, IR–ATR, TGA, TPD, PCI). The phase mixture obtained after the synthesis strongly depends on the milling conditions. For prolonged times, the formation of Zn and MgCl2 has been observed, suggesting the delivering of B-containing species during the milling. After heating, a hydrogen release, coupled with diborane delivering, has been observed for temperatures close to 100 °C, suggesting a significant decrease of the decomposition temperature with respect to pure Mg(BH4)2. Theoretical and experimental results have been discussed on the basis of the possible reaction paths, as estimated from available thermodynamic databases.

NaBH4 has long been identified as a viable hydrogen-storage material due to a theoretical gravimetric H2 capacity of 10.6 wt %. Because of the high enthalpy of decomposition of 108 ± 3 kJ mol–1, thermal decomposition of the pristine material does not occur until at least 500 °C, and thus NaBH4 has yet to be utilized in hydrogen-storage processes. In this study, NaBH4 has been milled with a variety of Ni-containing additives to investigate the effects on the temperatures required for thermal desorption of H2 by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) measurements and the products characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXD). Ni-containing additives have been determined to significantly enhance the thermal desorption of H2 by at least 60 °C (Ni (65 wt %) on Si/Al2O3). PCT cycling experiments have been conducted to ascertain their effects on the reversible hydrogenation of the milled NaBH4. The identification of features in the Local Density of States (LDOS) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) obtained by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) is of great importance in order to understand their properties. In this work, Single- and Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes are compared with Multi-Wall CNTs filled with tin nanowires (Sn@CNTs) in order to investigate the effect on morphological and electronic properties of the CNTs metallic filling. The LDOS of CNTs, together with topology changes, is investigated by using spatially resolved STM/STS at room temperature and in air and compared to the LDOS of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG). The LDOS of CNTs is dominated from different electronic states filling the C 2p sigma-2p sigma* band gap. The appearance of those states is linked to the diameter and the defects of the CNTs. In fact, Sn-nanowires encapsulation induces changes in the structure of the CNTs and the appearance of electronic states in the LDOS inside the band gap. A more extensive description of the samples is obtained depicting the morphological features and the vibrational structure on wider areas using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively.
