Tidal point bars are commonly developed in coastal plain meandering channels. They form by the same basic processes as fluvial point bars but are further modified by tidal action. This study analyses the sedimentary facies of six active tidal point bars and their relationships. The bars are situated along the Georgia coastal plain, USA, in the lower and upper reaches of the fluvial marine transition and in tidal channels without upstream river input. Based on millimetric logging of 31 cores, nine sedimentary facies were identified, which are proposed to be used for the characterization of tidal point bars in other depositional settings. These bars share common sedimentary facies; however, the internal organization of these facies and their associations differ appreciably in response to complex local tidal processes and fluvial–tidal interactions. The increase in tidal influence results in prominent heterogeneous architectures, with greater concentration of heterolithic stratification (mostly inclined), bioturbation and evidence of flow reversals. In contrast, when freshwater river discharge overcomes tidal stages in the fluvial marine transition bars, structureless coarse‐grained facies with attendant erosional surfaces and decreased bioturbation are predominantly developed. In the lower reach of the fluvial marine transition, along the estuarine turbidity maximum, alternations of fluvial and tidal sedimentation are evidenced by a bimodal facies association, where alternations of gravel lag and muddy facies (massive to heterolithic) dominate. Moreover, despite differences in local hydrodynamics, coarsening‐upward sequences, mostly composed of structureless coarser facies, are consistently distributed along the upper parts of the bars, which may indicate overprinting of regional events such as storm surge‐related floodings in the sedimentological record. This study provides a basis for better identifying the hydrodynamic processes that shape coastal systems, such as estuarine and backbarrier environments. The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 have spurred global interest in the role of coastal wetlands and vegetation in reducing storm surge and flood damages. Evidence that coastal wetlands reduce storm surge and attenuate waves is often cited in support of restoring Gulf Coast wetlands to protect coastal communities and property from hurricane damage. Yet interdisciplinary studies combining hydrodynamic and economic analysis to explore this relationship for temperate marshes in the Gulf are lacking. By combining hydrodynamic analysis of simulated hurricane storm surges and economic valuation of expected property damages, we show that the presence of coastal marshes and their vegetation has a demonstrable effect on reducing storm surge levels, thus generating significant values in terms of protecting property in southeast Louisiana. Simulations for four storms along a sea to land transect show that surge levels decline with wetland continuity and vegetation roughness. Regressions confirm that wetland continuity and vegetation along the transect are effective in reducing storm surge levels. A 0.1 increase in wetland continuity per meter reduces property damages for the average affected area analyzed in southeast Louisiana, which includes New Orleans, by $99-$133, and a 0.001 increase in vegetation roughness decreases damages by $24-$43. Louisiana barrier islands, such as the chain surrounding the southeast region of the state, are experiencing rapid loss of land area, shoreline erosion, and landward migration due to transgression and in-place drowning, and the landfall of several major hurricanes in the last decade. Observations of migration rates and overall impacts to these barrier islands are poorly understood since they do not respond in a traditional way, such as barrier rollover. This paper aims to verify how wave energy and potential longshore sediment transport trends have influenced the recent evolution of the Chandeleur Islands, by direct comparison with recent observations of migration and erosion trends. The Chandeleur Islands are characterized by a bidirectional transport system, with material moving from the central arc to the flanks. The longshore sediment transport along the barrier islands was calculated after propagation and transformation of waves to breaking (generated using observed winds), and through the use of a common longshore sediment transport formula. Seasonal variations in wind climate produced changes in the transport trends and gradients that agree with migration and rotation patterns observed for this barrier island system. Results suggest that wind dominance produces seasonal oscillations that cause an imbalance in the resulting transport gradients that over time are responsible for higher rates of transport in the northward direction. Numerical experiments of multiple freshwater diversions into the Pontchartrain Estuary under tidal forcing were conducted to evaluate the impact on salinity and tidal flow distribution. A validated numerical hydrodynamic and transport model was used to assess the impacts on tidal flows, circulation, and salinity as a function of additional freshwater input in the estuary from hypothetical diversions combined with channel modifications in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. The cumulative and specific impacts were compared with existing conditions. It was concluded that upper and middle estuarine salinity regimes are coupled, and diversion flows need to be managed in accordance with historic inputs. This study also showed that if total freshwater input is not of an order similar to the existing natural tributary flow, the average salinity in the upper estuary could be reduced by 1.5 ppt (±0.5 ppt), which is approximately 40% of the existing long-term salinity of the upper estuary. The present-day coast of Louisiana is undergoing unprecedented change when compared with other coastal regions of the United States, Whereas most of its shoreline is retreating and its coastal hays expanding at the expense of wetlands, the Wax Lake and Atchafalaya deltas are prograding and forming new delta plains. Coastal processes responsible for reworking the lower delta plain and modifying the coast are modest, including very low-wave energy and a microtidal regime. However, occasional hurricanes and more frequent frontal systems produce elevated water levels and large waves (heights >1 to 2 metersl, which produce erosion, overwash, and barrier breaching. High subsidence rates coupled with eustatic sea-level rise and wave erosion are converting wetlands to open-water bays. Along barrier shorelines, this process is increasing tidal exchange, which is enlarging tidal inlets and the volume of sand captured in ebb-tidal deltas. Sequestration of sand in offshore ebb shoals depletes sand resources to the barrier chain. The segmentation, landward migration, and overall decrease in size of the barriers are a product of relative sea-level rise and the lack of contribution of new sediment to the system. Submarine mass failures triggered by energetic forcing events such as hurricanes and earthquakes are relatively well studied due to the potential for infrastructure damage and tsunami generation; such failures are common on heavily sedimented margins where underconsolidated deposits are preconditioned to fail. However, studies of seafloor sediment movement between large events remain scarce. Using repeat bathymetric surveys of the Mississippi River Delta Front (MRDF), we document substantial seafloor movement in absence of major hurricanes. About 1 m/yr of deepening was observed within preexisting failures, with downslope sediment transport on the order of 105 m³/yr. Outside failure features, seafloor depths remained stable or showed minor (<20 cm/yr) accretion. MRDF volumetric sediment flux during hurricanedriven mass failures is an order of magnitude greater than the annual flux during a quiescent interval. When normalized by time, however, sediment flux during the quiescent interval (5.5 × 105 m³/yr) was half that of hurricane-driven mass failures (1.1 × 106 m³/yr). These observations corroborate our wave modeling results, which infer that even waves of 1 yr recurrence interval can generate differential seafloor pressures sufficient to trigger submarine landslides; this does not exclude the possibility of river floods also being agents of failure. These findings indicate that sub-decadal submarine landslides are important to MRDF dynamics, comparable to the role of major hurricanes, and observation during seemingly quiescent periods is necessary to holistically assess sediment flux. The periodicity and prevalence of moderate-scale mass transport documented here corroborates similar recent studies offshore other deltas globally, indicating that highstand mass and time budgets of shelf to deep-sea sediment flux, in addition to organic carbon and bioreactive particles, may need to be revised. This paper depicts a simulation-based assessment of sediment quality on the performance of dedicated dredging projects for barrier island restoration in coastal Louisiana, USA. The research involved the development and integration of two sub-models. In the first, geomorphic modeling was used to simulate sediment transport dynamics within a proxy barrier island template over a 50-year trajectory. The template was assumed to be nourished with one of two sources of dredged material: nearshore (NS) sediments of lower quality (smaller grain diameter, higher organic fines); or higher quality sediments from distal sources located on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). In the second model, agency project records and commercial bids were used to estimate project construction costs as a function of dredge material quantity, transport distance, and project target elevation. These sub-models were coupled within a net present value framework from which average annual break-even values for ecosystem services (EBEV) were derived as an efficiency metric for comparing the economic performance of NS- and OCS-sourced projects. Results indicate that in some cases, the physical resiliency afforded by even small increases in sand diameter (+4 μm d50) can translate to greater long-term economic viability (lower EBEV) for OCS-sourced sediment transported over longer distances. Moreover, projects constructed with much higher diameter OCS sediment (+44 μm d50) with low fines and transported over relatively long distances (200 μm, 5% fines, 15–20 miles) were found to be more cost-effective than all comparably-sized projects constructed with lower quality NS sediments obtained from proximal sources (156 μm, 20% fines, 3–5 miles). For some comparisons, this quality advantage yielded a lower EBEV for OCS-sourced projects with transport distances exceeding 30 miles. Under storm-punctuated simulations, these quality advantages were more pronounced, with greater physical and economic implications for earlier (Y 5) versus later (Y 20) occurring storms. Budgeting for dedicated dredging projects has traditionally centered on the value of sediment as a commodity, with a focus on material placement cost. Algal blooms have been recorded in the Pontchartrain Estuary when elevated nutrient loads combine with other ambient conditions, e.g., low salinity and low turbidity. Nutrient and sediment loads were quantified and incorporated into a dynamic mass balance model for the upper Pontchartrain Estuary to determine the timing of conditions that can lead to algal blooms. General nutrient and sediment loading relationships were developed for the tributaries of the Pontchartrain Estuary where data were available; these relationships were extended to estimate the loading for ungauged areas. The annual water yield for the drainage basin was found to be 500 mm. The annual nutrient loadings from all sources were found to be 21,000 t (13 g m-2 y-1) of total nitrogen and 2700 t (1.6 g m-2 y-1) of phosphorus for Lakes Maurepas, Pontchartrain, and Borgne. The basin sediment yield was calculated to be 42 t km-2. Nutrient and sediment concentrations in the Mississippi River were combined with the estimated leakage through the Bonnet Carré Spillway to obtain nutrient loads related to the river stage. The mass-balance model was applied to assess the occurrence of algal blooms for the period 1990-2008; the model predicted all five observed algal blooms but also indicated a potential for two more that were not documented. The strongest potential for algal blooms was in the northwest quadrant of Lake Pontchartrain although the highest dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations were predicted for the southwest quadrant in connection with spillage from the Bonnet Carré Spillway. The subaqueous delta of the Mississippi River, the largest river system in the conterminous U.S., has entered a stage of retrogradation caused by multiple natural and anthropogenic activities. Since the 1950s, the suspended sediment load of the Mississippi River has decreased by ~50% due primarily to the construction of >50,000 dams in the Mississippi basin. The impact of this decreased sediment load has been observed in subaerial environments, but the impact on sedimentation and geomorphology of the subaqueous delta front has yet to be examined. To identify historic trends in sedimentation patterns, we compiled bathymetric datasets, including historical charts, industry and academic surveys, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hydrographic data, collected between 1764 and 2009. The progradation rate (measured at the 10 m depth contour) of Southwest Pass, which receives 69% of the suspended sediment load reaching Head of Passes, has decreased from ~67 m/yr between 1874 and 1940 to ~26 m/yr between 1940 and 1979, with evidence of further deceleration from 1979 to 2009. At South Pass and Pass a Loutre, the delta front has entered the destructive phase, with the 10 m contour retreating at rates >20 m/yr at both passes since 1979. Advancement of the delta front also decelerated in deeper water (in some areas out to ~180 m depth). Except locally, where mudflow lobes are advancing, deeper contours show a pattern of decreasing progradation rate between 1874–1940 and 1979–2005 time periods. Furthermore, based on differences measured between available bathymetric datasets, the sediment accumulation rate across the delta front decreased by ~73% for the same period. The retention rate of Mississippi River sediment on the delta front ranged from 67 to 81% for the time periods assessed, with total sediment load stored on the delta front equal to 317 ± 54 Mt/yr from 1874 to 1940, 145 ± 25 Mt/yr from 1940 to 1979, and 87 ± 15 Mt/yr from 1979 to 2005. We document for the first time that the Mississippi River delta front has entered a phase of retrogradation, which will likely be accelerated by future upstream activities that divert a portion of the sediment load to the upper delta for coastal protection and restoration projects. Thick bay-fill sequences that often culminate in strandplain development serve as important sedimentary archives of land-ocean interaction, although distinguishing between internal and external forcings is an ongoing challenge. This study employs sediment cores, ground-penetrating radar surveys, radiocarbon dates, palaeogeographic reconstructions and hydrodynamic modelling to explore the role of autogenic processes - notably a reduction in wave energy in response to coastal embayment infilling - in coastal evolution and shoreline morphodynamics. Following a regional 2 to 4 m highstand at ca 5·8 ka, the 75 km2 Tijucas Strandplain in southern Brazil built from fluvial sediments deposited into a semi-enclosed bay. Holocene regressive deposits are underlain by fluvial sands and a Pleistocene transgressive-regressive sequence, and backed by a highstand barrier-island. The strandplain is immediately underlain by 5 to 16 m of seaward-thickening, fluvially derived, Holocene-age, basin-fill mud. Several trends are observed from the landward (oldest) to the seaward (youngest) sections of the strandplain: (i) the upper shoreface and foreshore become finer and thinner and shift from sand-dominated to mud-dominated; (ii) beachface slopes decrease from >11° to ca 7°; and (iii) progradation rates increase from 0·4 to 1·8 m yr−1. Hydrodynamic modelling demonstrates a correlation between progressive shoaling of Tijucas Bay driven by sea-level fall and sediment infilling and a decrease in onshore wave-energy transport from 18 to 4 kW m−1. The combination of allogenic (sediment supply, falling relative sea-level and geology) and autogenic (decrease in wave energy due to bay shoaling) processes drove the development of a regressive system with characteristics that are rare, if not unique, in the Holocene and rock records. These findings demonstrate the complexities in architecture styles of highstand and regressive systems tracts. Furthermore, this article highlights the diverse internal and external processes and feedbacks responsible for the development of these intricate marginal marine sedimentary systems. Bathymetric surveys conducted before and after the 2005 hurricane season at Little Pass Timbalier in the Mississippi River delta plain, United States, demonstrate that 9.1 (±2.4) x 106 m³ of sediment was eroded from a 47.9 km² area. Between the two surveys, Hurricanes Cindy, Katrina, and Rita passed within 300 km of the tidal inlet. Comparison of before and after bathymetric data sets shows that the distal portion of the ebb-tidal delta (ETD) was the site of 63% of the total erosion, locally resulting in 400 m of shoreface retreat. Shoaling (0.75-1.0 m) in the seawardmost portion of the ebb channel and erosion in the landward portion (∼1.5 m) resulted in a 160 m landward shift of the inlet throat. Collectively, these processes forced the landward migration of the entire tidal inlet and ETD system. There has been considerable discussion about large volumes of mineral sediment deposited on the Mississippi River delta plain interior marsh surface as a result of hurricanes; however, the origin of this sediment is unknown. We identify the distal portion of an ETD as one possible sediment source and hypothesize that ETD and shoreface sediment is mobilized by hurricane waves and transported landward by surge-induced currents. Our results emphasize the role of frequent and intense hurricanes in long-term coastal evolution and as a mechanism for regional sediment retention within the transgressive system beyond typical barrier overwash processes. The Great Marsh in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire is the largest salt marsh in New England and includes the marsh surrounding Plum Island Sound, one of the most studied coastal wetlands in the United States. A primary goal in marsh research today is predicting their resilience in a regime of sea-level rise, which has become increasingly based on modeling studies with sparse or site-specific field data input. Here, we present the results of a vertical accretion study using 210Pb and 137Cs geochronology developed from 50-cm long auger cores taken at 15 locations throughout the PIS marsh. Two significant outliers were omitted from the final analyses due to their unusual depositional settings. The 137Cs spike produced the shortest-term record and lowest average accretion rate (2.5 mm/yr). Of the various 210Pb accretion models (Constant Flux-Constant Sedimentation: CF-CS, Constant Rate of Supply: CRS, Constant Initial Concentration: CIC), we chose the CF-CS model accretion rate for comparison to other environmental parameters and future marsh projections due to the robust R2 linear regression values and its wide use. The 13 stations exhibited an average accretion rate of 3.13 mm/yr, which is 0.6 mm/yr greater than the average rate reported elsewhere in New England. Individual accretion rates show no correlation with geography, elevation, bulk density, loss on ignition, distance to tidal channels, or peat thickness, indicating the complexity of the interacting factors that control marsh growth. Using moderate sea-level rise predictions, we show that large portions of the high marsh are likely to be converted to low marsh by 2050, and that the entire marsh high platform will become low marsh prior to 2070. This is the first time that wide spread field data are used to project a major transformation of the Plum Island Sound platform marsh that undoubtedly will lead to dramatic changes to marsh drainage, backbarrier hypsometry, tidal current dominance, and redistribution of sediment reservoirs, that will include the fronting barrier islands. The Mississippi River delta front (MRDF) is an excellent natural laboratory for studying seafloor instability and evaluating the preconditioning factors and triggering mechanisms that lead to seafloor failures. The occurrence of seafloor landslides on the MRDF has been recognized since the 1950s, but the bulk of research on the topic was conducted in the 1970s-80s after seafloor landslides triggered by Hurricane Camille damaged offshore infrastructure. Through these efforts, it was recognized that seafloor instability features are present across the entire delta front, that rapid sediment delivery from the Mississippi River is a primary preconditioning factor for failures, and that cyclic loading from hurricane waves is the main triggering mechanism for deep-seated catastrophic events. However, mounting evidence shows that MRDF seafloor motion occurs even during periods of no hurricane activity, which could be attributed to creep-like motion of underconsolidated sediment, or smaller episodic flows triggered by winter storms or Mississippi River floods. Given the extensive spatial distribution of instabilities on the MRDF, the multiple mechanisms of failure and variety of resulting morphology, and the range of potential triggering mechanisms with short recurrence, the MRDF is an exceptional location to assess the complex problem of seafloor landslides. An improved understanding of seafloor landslides is crucial for understanding global sediment budgets and associated biogeochemical cycling, as they can evacuate large volumes of sediment into deep water over short time periods. Additionally, seafloor landslides pose a hazard to offshore infrastructure and to coastal communities through possible tsunami inundation, and advancing research on preconditioning factors and triggering mechanisms would improve hazard assessments. This paper presents a review and synthesis of geological and geotechnical research on the MRDF, particularly with respect to seafloor landslides: their occurrence, geological and geotechnical controls, triggering mechanisms, and knowledge gaps related thereto. This synthesis is conducted at times of rapidly developing technologies for studying seafloor instability, and as the MRDF enters a stage of degradation characterized by reduced sediment delivery and accumulation.
