There are two sets of thermal reservoirs with different rock types in the Gucheng geothermal field of Hebei Province, namely the Ordovician fractured carbonate thermal reservoir and the Neogene Guantao sandstone thermal reservoir, each developed using independent well networks. The energy demand per unit area in the region is high, and the existing geothermal development methods cannot meet the regional energy demand. For this type of block, combined with the development characteristics of different types of thermal reservoirs, numerical simulation methods were used to study the geothermal development trends of Ordovician fractured carbonate reservoirs and Neogene Guantao Formation sandstone reservoirs. When simulating sandstone thermal storage, priority should be given to demonstrating the optimal recharge flow rate, while in simulating carbonate thermal storage, the focus should be on considering the influence of fracture development direction on development trends. Through numerical simulation of thermal storage development and combined with well network design, the optimal well spacing, production reinjection flow rate, and reinjection temperature for two sets of thermal reservoirs developed using the same well network were determined. It is predicted that the average heat flow in the study can increase by 47.8 %. This study presents reasonable development technical countermeasures to maximize the heating capacity of the geothermal development zone and provides an effective reference for the efficient development of similar geothermal resources in the Bohai Bay Basin.

Medium-deep borehole heat exchangers (MBHEs) have received increasing attention with respect to building heating. To avoid the thermal interference of adjacent MBHEs, the temperature distribution characteristics of medium-deep rock soil were investigated in this work. The evolution of the maximum rock-soil thermal affected radius (MTAR) over a full lifecycle was analyzed. The results showed that the rock-soil thermal affected area (RTAA) continuously expanded in both the radial and vertical directions when the MBHE continuously extracted geothermal energy during a heating season. The factors of the thermal extraction load, fluid velocity, geothermal gradient, and pipe length, impacted the RTAA in the vertical direction, while rock-soil thermal conductivity affected the RTAA in both the radial and vertical directions. Furthermore, the thermal affected radius (TAR) in deeper formations was larger, reaching even 96 m, such that thermal interference between adjacent MBHEs was more likely to occur. The MTAR in shallow formations was limited to 20 m. Consequently, a new layout form, achieved by inclining the borehole, was proposed to increase the distance between adjacent MBHEs in deep formations. The recommended incline angle was equal to or larger than four times the TAR angle. This work provides a scientific reference for promoting the application of multiple MBHE arrays. To accurately assess the heat transfer performance of a medium-depth coaxial casing heat exchanger, this study introduced the concepts of the annual stabilized mining stage and the effective thermal influence distance for each layer of non-homogeneous thermal storage. The study area was stratified into six layers based on the geothermal temperature gradient fitting results. The findings revealed that the maximum injected circulating fluid temperature for the mid-depth coaxial casing geothermal system was 37 °C, with a maximum mass flow rate of 16.67 kg/s. When the injected circulating fluid temperature increased from 2 °C to 25 °C, the duration of the annual stabilized exploitation stage extended from 23 to 26 years. Similarly, increasing the injected circulating fluid mass flow rate from 2.78 kg/s to 16.67 kg/s prolonged the maintenance period in the annual stable mining stage from 22 to 28 years. The study further indicated that the effective thermal influence distance for each layer of thermal storage was significantly impacted by varying injection circulating fluid temperatures. These results offered theoretical insights into the heat transfer performance of medium-depth coaxial casing geothermal systems under both short- and long-term operational conditions. Abstract Background Ethylene glycol (EG) (antifreeze) toxicosis has mostly been reported in dogs and cats, while reports on EG toxicosis in cattle are sparse. We report EG toxicosis in 25 milk-fed calves associated with a leak in the cooling pipes in a milk taxi. The milk taxi was connected to a geothermal heating system in which EG was used as antifreeze. Case presentation Although the assistant responsible for feeding milk to the calves observed a few blue-colored droplets of liquid on the surface of the milk in the milk taxi and suspected EG contamination, the milk was fed to the calves. Within hours, the calves became depressed and some died within the next 2 days. Necropsy and histopathology revealed widespread severe acute renal tubular necrosis with numerous birefringent crystals in the tubular lumen. Biochemical analysis of serum showed severe damage to the kidneys (marked azotemia) and hypochloremia, hyponatremia and hyperkalemia; findings consisting with metabolic acidosis. After feeding the calves, the assistant inspected the milk taxi and found a leaking cooling pipe. Conclusions The suspected EG toxicosis was confirmed by the observation of renal tubular necrosis, numerous intratubular crystals, and metabolic acidosis. EG toxicosis due to leaking pipes connected to a geothermal heating system has not been reported previously. Alternative antifreeze products that are less toxic than EG are recommended for use if there is a risk of contamination of human and animal foodstuffs in case of a leak in the system.

Modern greenhouses are intensive farming systems designed to achieve high efficiency and productivity. Plants are produced year-round in greenhouses by maintaining the environment at or near optimum levels regardless of extreme weather conditions. Many scientific discoveries and technological advancements that happened in the past two centuries paved the way for current state-of-the-art greenhouses. These include, but are not limited to, advancements in climate-specific structural designs and glazing materials, and temperature control, artificial lighting, and hydroponic production systems. Greenhouse structures can be broadly grouped into four distinct designs, including tall Venlo greenhouses of the Netherlands, passive solar greenhouses of China, low-cost Parral greenhouses of the Mediterranean region, and gutter-connected polyethylene houses of India and African countries. These designs were developed to suit local climatic conditions and maximize the return on investment. Although glass and rigid plastic options are available for glazing, the development of low-cost and lightweight plastic glazing materials (e.g., polyethylene) enabled widespread growth of the greenhouse industry in the developing world. For temperate regions, supplemental lighting technology is crucial for year-round production. This heavily relies on advancements in electro-lighting during the 19th and 20th centuries. The development of hydroponic production systems for the controlled delivery of nutrients further enhanced crop productivity. This article addresses important historical events, scientific discoveries, and technological improvements related to advancements in these areas.

Taking the Gaoshangpu-Liuzan geothermal field in the Nanpu sag of the Bohai Bay Basin as the research object, this paper discusses the geological conditions and potential of the geothermal resources of the Guantao Formation in the study area, and introduces the development practice of geothermal energy heating in Caofeidian. The average buried depth of the Guantao Formation is 1500–2500 m, the lithology is dominated by sandy conglomerate, and the average thickness of thermal reservoir is 120–300 m. The average porosity of thermal reservoir is 28%–35%, the permeability is (600–2000)×10−3 μm2, and the temperature of thermal reservoir is 70–110 °C. The formation has total geothermal resources of 13.79×1018 J, equivalent to 4.70×108 t of standard coal. Based on a large amount of seismic and drilling data from oil and gas exploration, this study carried out high quality target area selection, simulation of sandstone thermal reservoir, and production and injection in the same layer. The geothermal heating project with distributed production and injection well pattern covering an area of 230×104 m2 was completed in the new district of Caofeidian in 2018. The project has been running steadily for two heating seasons, with an average annual saving of 6.06×104 t of standard coal and a reduction of 15.87×104 t of carbon dioxide, achieving good economic and social benefits. This project has proved that the Neogene sandstone geothermal reservoir in eastern China can achieve sustainable large-scale development by using the technology of “balanced production and injection in the same layer”. It provides effective reference for the exploration and development of geothermal resource in oil and gas-bearing basins in eastern China.

In 2017, China’s central government approved the national strategy to build Xiong’an New Area (XNA, 100km southwest to Beijing), which was announced as a “millennium strategy” and a “demo area” for a sustainable, modern, and innovative urban model. Xiong’an will draw in as much as $380 billion investment and is expected to help accelerate the development of the wider Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jingjinji) Area. In this paper, present subsidence in the XNA area is investigated using InSAR observations for the first time. The 24 SAR images acquired by European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellites during the period from June 2017 to July 2018 suggest that in the north of Xiong County, the subsidence rate reaches up to 90mm/y, which is highly correlated with the exploitation of geothermal drilling. As the construction in the XNA area will significantly accelerate and its high-quality development, the InSAR findings could provide valuable information for future sustainable urban planning and underground infrastructure construction.

Strong earthquakes are a major cause of natural disasters and may also be related to heavy rainfall events. Both phenomena have received considerable attention in seismology and meteorology, two relatively independent disciplines, but we do not yet know whether there is a connection between them. We investigated the characteristics of daily rainfall over seismic areas in China. Our statistical analyses showed that there is a strong correlation between strong earthquakes (Ms ≥ 6.0) and rainfall over the seismic area, with 74.9% of earthquakes in China accompanied by seismic epicenter rainfall and 86.6% by seismic area rainfall. The statistics also showed that the daily precipitation over the seismic area, including the epicenter, was mainly light rain, with only a few instances of torrential or storm rain, with 80% of the rainfall events lasting two or more days. The maximum cumulative precipitation corresponded well with the strong earthquakes occurring over steep terrain, such as the Taiwan central mountains and the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The earthquake area rainfall had a higher frequency than the 30-years climatological average and was dominated by earthquake events in the wet season. The WRF-ARW numerical simulation of seismic local rainfall during the devastating Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake in May 2008 showed that the geothermal heat from the earthquake strengthened the local convergence of moisture and vertical motion near the epicenter and the upward transport of the sensible heat flux, which favored seismic rainfall. The results of this study show that rainfall in the seismic area is closely related to strong earthquakes and can be triggered and enhanced by geothermal heat.

In this work, a novel enhanced deep borehole heat exchanger (EDBHE) was proposed to improve heat extraction efficiency based on the jet grouting method. By means of this technology, a soilcrete zone with high thermal conductivity was built near the wellbore. To analyze the feasibility and efficiency of this method, we firstly constructed a validated deep borehole heat exchanger (DBHE) model based on the field experimental data. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the 30-year production performance of EDBHE. Results demonstrated that the jet grouting method is an efficient way for improving thermal output of DBHE. It is evaluated that the average annual heat production rate over a 30-year heating period of EDBHE is 463.2 kW, which is 1.27 times as that of DBHE. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the heat production rate and outlet temperature mainly depend on the height and radius of the artificial soilcrete zone. However, thermal output is not sensitive to thermal conductivity of the soilcrete zone due to the higher thermal resistance of the geological formation. For the experimental site used in this work, the recommended height, radius, and thermal conductivity of the soilcrete are 1000 m, 1.0 m, and 50 W/m °C, respectively. • The jet grouting method is first proposed to enhance the deep borehole heat exchanger system. • High thermal conductivity materials are used to reduce the thermal resistance in the artificial soilcrete zone. • The proposed strategy is beneficial for the long-term heat extraction from the deep borehole heat exchanger system. • The uncertain and adjustable parameters that influence thermal exploitation performance are evaluated in detail. The decarbonization of the heating sector is crucial for the green transition of the energy mix. This study investigates threefold the economic and environmental performance of deep geothermal heating investments in Northern Belgium First, techno-economic and life cycle assessment (LCA) are performed, followed by a global sensitivity analysis focusing on the geological uncertainty. Lastly, real options analysis (ROA) is employed to investigate the economic and environmental value of the investors' flexibility. A novel ROA method is proposed that considers the LCA results to calculate development decisions that minimize the expected environmental impact of the investment. The results show that the economic and environmental performance of the investment vary with the energy prices and the electricity mix. The performance of the investment is driven by the plant's pumping requirements, which are induced by the relatively low rock permeability at the targeted location. Also, the results' variability mainly originates by uncertainty regarding the permeability value. Nevertheless, the investors' flexibility adds large economic and environmental value to the investment. However, the development strategies that optimize the economic or the environmental performance of the plant present some trade-offs. This study demonstrates that the economic and environmental performance of deep geothermal heating investments in Northern Belgium can be improved by focusing on the factors that simultaneously drive the costs, environmental impacts, and their variability. It also shows that utilizing the investors' flexibility to optimize the investment's economic and environmental performance can add significant value to the investment. • The electricity consumed and well development drive the performance of the plant. • The variability of the results is dominated by the value of the rock permeability. • A geology-based global sensitivity analysis is performed. • An environmentally-driven real options method is developed. • The flexibility adds economic and environmental value to the development. The energy reserves of hot dry rock (HDR) and hydrothermal system are abundant in China. However, there is low-level development and utilization due to high risk, huge capital investment and immature technology for HDR and dispersion distribution characteristic for hydrothermal system. Here a shallow depth enhanced geothermal system (SDEGS) is proposed, which is formed by fracturing low yield hydrothermal system to increase permeability and volume flow rate. It is indicated that, due to the promoted volume flow rate of 500 m3/h, the extracted thermal output from SDEGS with reservoir volume of 5 × 107 m3 is 43940.92 kW. Generally, it can provide heating for a 1255454.86 m2 building. By changing the volume flow rate and injection water temperature, it is easy to adjust the extracted thermal output to meet the thermal load requirement under different outdoor ambient temperature. The application of SDEGS technology will promote the rapid development of geothermal energy and solve the smog problem easily and effectively.
