We show how background field inhomogeneities modify the non-perturbative structure of the effective action. The simple Borel poles of the Euler-Heisenberg effective action become branch points, and new branch points also appear, indicating new non-perturbative effects. This information is resurgently encoded in the perturbative weak field expansion, and becomes physically significant for strongly inhomogeneous fields. We also show that resurgent extrapolation methods permit the decoding of a surprising amount of non-perturbative information from a relatively modest amount of perturbative input, enabling accurate analytic continuations from weak field to strong field, and of a spatially dependent magnetic background to a time dependent electric background. These extrapolations are far superior to standard WKB and locally constant field approximations., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

As a continuation of the study (in arXiv:2102.07696 and arXiv:2104.12625) of strong-coupling expansion of non-planar corrections in $\mathcal N=2$ 4d superconformal models we consider two special theories with gauge groups $SU(N)$ and $Sp(2N)$. They contain $N$-independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theories. These $\mathcal N=2$ theories can be realised on a system of $N$ D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the $\mathcal N=2$ partition function on $S^4$ we find exact differential relations between the $1/N$ terms in the corresponding free energy $F$ and the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson loop expectation value $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and also compute their large 't Hooft coupling ($\lambda \gg 1$) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable $Sp(2N)$ case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the $1/N$ expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large $\lambda$ contributions to the non-planar corrections to $F$ and $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and comment on their resurgence properties. Motivated by the search for the QCD critical point, we discuss how to obtain the singular behavior of a thermodynamic system near a critical point, namely the Lee-Yang singularities, from a limited amount of local data generated in a different region of the phase diagram. We show that by using a limited number of Taylor series coefficients, it is possible to reconstruct the equation of state past the radius of convergence, in particular in the critical region. Furthermore we also show that it is possible to extend this reconstruction to go from a crossover region to the first-order transition region in the phase diagram, using a uniformizing map to pass between Riemann sheets. Perturbative expansions in physical applications are generically divergent, and their physical content can be studied using Borel analysis. Given just a finite number of terms of such an expansion, this input data can be analyzed in different ways, leading to vastly different precision for the extrapolation of the expansion parameter away from its original asymptotic regime. Here we describe how conformal maps and uniformizing maps can be used, in conjunction with Pad'e approximants, to increase the precision of the information that can be extracted from a finite amount of perturbative input data. We also summarize results from the physical interpretation of Pad'e approximations in terms of electrostatic potential theory., 15 pages, 10 figures

We consider the expectation value $\langle \cal W \rangle$ of the circular BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This model admits a regular large $N$ expansion, is planar-equivalent to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS$_5\times S^5$ superstring theory. On the string theory side $\langle\cal W \rangle $ is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS$_2$ minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in arXiv:2007.08512, we suggest that as in the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM case and in the ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ superconformal quiver theory discussed in arXiv:2102.07696, the coefficient of the leading non-planar $1/N^2$ correction in $\langle\cal W \rangle $ should have the universal $\lambda^{3/2}$ scaling at large 't Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for $\langle\cal W \rangle $. We determine the 1=N2 f and 1=N3 f contributions to the QED beta function stemming from the closed set of nested diagrams. At the order of 1=N2 f, we discover a new logarithmic branch cut closer to the origin when compared to the 1=Nf results. The same singularity location appears at 1=N3 f, and these correspond to a UV renormalon singularity in the finite part of the photon two-point function.

Quantum systems with multiple degenerate classical harmonic minima exhibit new non-perturbative phenomena which are not present for the double-well and periodic potentials. The simplest characteristic example of this family is the triple-well potential. Despite the fact that instantons are exact semiclassical solutions with finite and minimal action, they do not contribute to the energy spectrum at leading order in the semiclassical analysis. This is because the instanton fluctuation prefactor vanishes, which can be interpreted as the action becoming infinite quantum mechanically. Instead, the non-perturbative physics is governed by different types of {\it bion} configurations. A generalization to supersymmetric and quasi-exactly soluble models is also discussed. An interesting pattern of interference between topological and neutral bions, depending on the hidden topological angle, the discrete theta angle and the perturbative level number, leads to an intricate pattern of divergent/convergent expansions for low lying states, and provides criteria for the exact solvability of some of the states. We confirm these semiclassical bion predictions using the Bender-Wu Mathematica package to study the structure of the associated perturbative expansions. It also turns out that all the systems we study have a curious exact one-to-one relationship between the perturbative coefficients of the three wells, which we check using the BenderWu package.

We extend Feynman's analysis of the infinite ladder AC circuit to fractal AC circuits. We show that the characteristic impedances can have positive real part even though all the individual impedances inside the circuit are purely imaginary. This provides a physical setting for analyzing wave propagation of signals on fractals, by analogy with the Telegrapher's Equation, and generalizes the real resistance metric on a fractal, which provides a measure of distance on a fractal, to complex impedances.

We show that the physical Hastings-McLeod solution of the integrable Painleve II equation generalizes in a natural way to a class of non-integrable equations, in a way that preserves many of the significant qualitative properties. We derive the trans-series structure of these generalized solutions, demonstrating that integrability is not essential for the resurgent asymptotic properties of the solutions., 11 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the problem of global reconstruction of functions as accurately as possible, based on partial information in the form of a truncated power series at some point, and additional analyticity properties. This situation occurs frequently in applications. The question of the optimal procedure was open, and we formulate it as a well-posed mathematical problem. Its solution leads to a practical method which provides dramatic accuracy improvements over existing techniques. Our procedure is based on uniformization of Riemann surfaces. As an application, we show that our procedure can be implemented for solutions of a wide class of nonlinear ODEs. We find a new uniformization method, which we use to construct the uniformizing maps needed for special functions, including solution of the Painlev'e equations P_I-P_V. We also introduce a new rigorous and constructive method of regularization, elimination of singularities whose position and type are known. If these are unknown, the same procedure enables a highly sensitive resonance method to determine the position and type of a singularity. In applications where less explicit information is available about the Riemann surface, our approach and techniques lead to new approximate, but still much more precise reconstruction methods than existing ones, especially in the vicinity of singularities, which are the points of greatest interest., Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures; v3 some clarifications added; v4 extended discussion, new applications and examples

For certain quantum field theories, the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization reduces the Dyson-Schwinger equations to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients of the renormalized Green's function. We apply resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which provide the non-perturbative completion of these formal Dyson-Schwinger expansions. We illustrate the general approach with the concrete example of four dimensional massless Yukawa theory, connecting with the exact functional solution found by Broadhurst and Kreimer. The trans-series solution is associated with the iterative form of the Dyson-Schwinger equations, and displays renormalon-like structure of integer-repeated Borel singularities. We show that the semi-classical analysis of generic Euclidean path integrals necessarily requires complexification of the action and measure, and consideration of complex saddle solutions. We demonstrate that complex saddle points have a natural interpretation in terms of the Picard-Lefschetz theory. Motivated in part by the semi-classical expansion of QCD with adjoint matter on ${\mathbb R}^3\times S^1$, we study quantum-mechanical systems with bosonic and fermionic (Grassmann) degrees of freedom with harmonic degenerate minima, as well as (related) purely bosonic systems with harmonic non-degenerate minima. We find exact finite action non-BPS bounce and bion solutions to the holomorphic Newton equations. We find not only real solutions, but also complex solution with non-trivial monodromy, and finally complex multi-valued and singular solutions. Complex bions are necessary for obtaining the correct non-perturbative structure of these models. In the supersymmetric limit the complex solutions govern the ground state properties, and their contribution to the semiclassical expansion is necessary to obtain consistency with the supersymmetry algebra. The multi-valuedness of the action is either related to the hidden topological angle or to the resurgent cancellation of ambiguities. We also show that in the approximate multi-instanton description the integration over the complex quasi-zero mode thimble produces the most salient features of the exact solutions. While exact complex saddles are more difficult to construct in quantum field theory, the relation to the approximate thimble construction suggests that such solutions may be underlying some remarkable features of approximate bion saddles in quantum field theories., 108 pages, 31 figures

We present a broad conceptual introduction to some new ideas in nonperturbative quantum field theory (QFT) that have led to progress toward an understanding of quark confinement in gauge theories and, more broadly, toward a nonperturbative continuum definition of QFTs. We first present exact orbifold equivalences of supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric QFTs in the large-N limit and exact equivalences of large-N theories in infinite volume to large-N theories in finite volume, or even at a single point. We discuss principles by which calculable QFTs are continuously connected to strong-coupling QFTs, allowing understanding of the physics of confinement or the absence thereof. We discuss the role of particular saddle solutions, termed bions, in weak-coupling calculable regimes. The properties of bions motivate an extension of semiclassical methods used to evaluate functional integrals to include families of complex saddles (Picard–Lefschetz theory). This analysis leads us to the resurgence program, which may provide a framework for combining divergent perturbation series with semiclassical instanton and bion/renormalon contributions. This program could provide a nonperturbative definition of the path integral.

We discuss some physical consequences of the resurgent structure of Painleve equations and their related conformal block expansions. The resurgent structure of Painleve equations is particularly transparent when expressed in terms of physical conformal block expansions of the associated tau functions. Resurgence produces an intricate network of inter-relations; some between expansions around different critical points, others between expansions around different instanton sectors of the expansions about the same critical point, and others between different non-perturbative sectors of associated spectral problems, via the Bethe-gauge and Painleve-gauge correspondences. Resurgence relations exist both for convergent and divergent expansions, and can be interpreted in terms of the physics of phase transitions. These general features are illustrated with three physical examples: correlators of the 2d Ising model, the partition function of the Gross-Witten-Wadia matrix model, and the full counting statistics of one dimensional fermions, associated with Painleve VI, Painleve III and Painleve V, respectively., 32 pp

We study the analytic properties of the 't Hooft coupling expansion of the beta-function at the leading nontrivial large-$N_f$ order for QED, QCD, Super QED and Super QCD. For each theory, the 't Hooft coupling expansion is convergent. We discover that an analysis of the expansion coefficients to roughly 30 orders is required to establish the radius of convergence accurately, and to characterize the (logarithmic) nature of the first singularity. We study summations of the beta-function expansion at order $1/N_f$, and identify the physical origin of the singularities in terms of iterated bubble diagrams. We find a common analytic structure across these theories, with important technical differences between supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories. We also discuss the expected structure at higher orders in the $1/N_f$ expansion, which will be in the future accessible with the methods presented in this work, meaning without the need for resumming the perturbative series. In the quest for designing novel protocols for quantum information and quantum computation, an important goal is to achieve perfect quantum state transfer for systems beyond the well-known one dimensional cases, such as 1d spin chains. We use methods from fractal analysis and probability to find a new class of quantum spin chains on fractal-like graphs (known as diamond fractals) which support perfect quantum state transfer, and which have a wide range of different Hausdorff and spectral dimensions. It has been argued that many non-perturbative phenomena in quantum mechanics (QM) and quantum field theory (QFT) are determined by complex field configurations, and that these contributions should be understood in terms of of Picard-Lefschetz theory. In this work we compute the contribution from non-BPS multi-instanton configurations, such as instanton-anti-instanton $[{I}\bar{I}]$ pairs, and argue that these contributions should be interpreted as exact critical points at infinity. The Lefschetz thimbles associated with such critical points have a specific structure arising from the presence of non-Gaussian, quasi-zero mode (QZM), directions. When fermion degrees of freedom are present, as in supersymmetric theories, the effective bosonic potential can be written as the sum of a classical and a quantum potential. We show that in this case the semi-classical contribution of the critical point at infinity vanishes, but there is a non-trivial contribution that arises from its associated non-Gaussian QZM-thimble. This approach resolves several puzzles in the literature concerning the semi-classical contribution of correlated $[{I}\bar{I}]$ pairs. It has the surprising consequence that the configurations that dominate the expansion of observables, and the critical points that define the Lefschetz thimble decomposition need not be the same, a feature not present in the traditional Picard-Lefschetz approach., 31 pages, v2: fixed hyperlinks to references, minor edits

We describe the non-perturbative trans-series, at both weak- and strong-coupling, of the large N approximation to the beta function of the Gross-Witten-Wadia unitary matrix model. This system models a running coupling, and the structure of the trans-series changes as one crosses the large N phase transition. The perturbative beta function acquires a non-perturbative trans-series completion at large but finite $N$ in the 't Hooft limit, as does the running coupling., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We study the change in the resurgent asymptotic properties of a trans-series in two parameters, a coupling $g^2$ and a gauge index $N$, as a system passes through a large $N$ phase transition, using the universal example of the Gross-Witten-Wadia third-order phase transition in the unitary matrix model. This transition is well-studied in the immediate vicinity of the transition point, where it is characterized by a double-scaling limit Painlev\'e II equation, and also away from the transition point using the pre-string difference equation. Here we present a complementary analysis of the transition at all coupling and all finite N, in terms of a differential equation, using the explicit Tracy-Widom mapping of the Gross-Witten-Wadia partition function to a solution of a Painlev\'e III equation. This mapping provides a simple method to generate trans-series expansions in all parameter regimes, and to study their transmutation as the parameters are varied. For example, at any finite N the weak coupling expansion is divergent, with a non-perturbative trans-series completion; on the other hand, the strong coupling expansion is convergent, and yet there is still a non-perturbative trans-series completion. We show how the different instanton terms `condense' at the transition point to match with the double-scaling limit trans-series. We also define a uniform large N strong-coupling expansion (a non-linear analogue of uniform WKB), which is much more precise than the conventional large N expansion through the transition region, and apply it to the evaluation of Wilson loops., Comment: 46 pages; 20 figures

For a wide variety of quantum potentials, including the textbook `instanton' examples of the periodic cosine and symmetric double-well potentials, the perturbative data coming from fluctuations about the vacuum saddle encodes all non-perturbative data in all higher non-perturbative sectors. Here we unify these examples in geometric terms, arguing that the all-orders quantum action determines the all-orders quantum dual action for quantum spectral problems associated with a classical genus one elliptic curve. Furthermore, for a special class of genus one potentials this relation is particularly simple: this class includes the cubic oscillator, symmetric double-well, symmetric degenerate triple-well, and periodic cosine potential. These are related to the Chebyshev potentials, which are in turn related to certain ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum field theories, to mirror maps for hypersurfaces in projective spaces, and also to topological $c=3$ Landau-Ginzburg models and `special geometry'. These systems inherit a natural modular structure corresponding to Ramanujan's theory of elliptic functions in alternative bases, which is especially important for the quantization. Insights from supersymmetric quantum field theory suggest similar structures for more complicated potentials, corresponding to higher genus. The prospect of next-generation ultra-high-intensity laser sources has prompted recent renewed study of nonlinear QED processes, such as the Schwinger effect, in which the instability of the QED vacuum is probed by external fields. Experimental observation of these nonlinear QED effects would provide unprecedented controlled access to non-perturbative processes in quantum field theory under extreme conditions, which is of direct interest in particle physics and astrophysical applications. I summarize important theoretical issues, both conceptual and computational, related to these nonlinear QED effects.

Extrapolation is a generic problem in physics and mathematics: how to use asymptotic data in one parametric regime to learn about the behavior of a function in another parametric regime. For example: extending weak coupling expansions to strong coupling, or high temperature expansions to low temperature, or vice versa. Such extrapolations are particularly interesting in systems possessing dualities. Here we study numerical procedures for performing such an extrapolation, combining ideas from resurgent asymptotics with well-known techniques of Borel summation, Pade approximants and conformal mapping. We illustrate the method with the concrete example of the Painleve I equation, which has applications in many branches of physics and mathematics. Starting solely with a finite number of coefficients from asymptotic data at infinity on the positive real line, we obtain a high precision extrapolation of the function throughout the complex plane, even across the phase transition into the pole region. The precision far exceeds that of state-of-the-art numerical integration methods along the real axis. The methods used are both elementary and general, not relying on Painleve integrability properties, and so are applicable to a wide class of extrapolation problems., Comment: 23 pages; 18 figures

I study the properties of the Euclidean Dirac equation for a light fermion in the presence of both a constant abelian magnetic field and an SU(2) instanton. In particular, I analyze the zero modes analytically in various limits, in order to compare with recent lattice QCD results, and study the implications for the electric dipole moment of the instanton induced by the magnetic field. I also present a holographic computation of the sphaleron rate of a strongly coupled plasma in a the presence of a constant magnetic flux and discuss its physical implications on heavy ion collisions.

In this paper, based on lectures by the authors at the May 2015 workshop Resurgence, Physics and Numbers, at the Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio De Giorgio of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, we explain the origin of resurgent trans-series in the Mathieu equation spectral problem, using uniform WKB and all-orders (exact) WKB. Exact quantization conditions naturally arise, and their expansion in the weak coupling regime produces resurgent trans-series expressions which exhibit precise relations between different instanton sectors. Indeed, the perturbative expansion encodes all orders of the multi-instanton expansion, an explicit realization of the general concept of “resurgence”. We also discuss the transition from weak to strong coupling, an explicit realization of “instanton condensation”.

We explain how a vanishing, or truncated, perturbative expansion, such as often arises in semi-classically tractable supersymmetric theories, can nevertheless be related to fluctuations about non-perturbative sectors via resurgence. We also demonstrate that, in the same class of theories, the vanishing of the ground state energy (unbroken supersymmetry) can be attributed to the cancellation between a real saddle and a complex saddle (with hidden topological angle pi), and positivity of the ground state energy (broken supersymmetry) can be interpreted as the dominance of complex saddles. In either case, despite the fact that the ground state energy is zero to all orders in perturbation theory, all orders of fluctuations around non-perturbative saddles are encoded in the perturbative E(N, g). We consider quantum field theoretic systems subject to a time-dependent perturbation, and discuss the question of defining a time dependent particle number not just at asymptotic early and late times, but also during the perturbation. Naively, this is not a well-defined notion for such a non-equilibrium process, as the particle number at intermediate times depends on a basis choice of reference states with respect to which particles and anti-particles are defined, even though the final late-time particle number is independent of this basis choice. The basis choice is associated with a particular truncation of the adiabatic expansion. The adiabatic expansion is divergent, and we show that if this divergent expansion is truncated at its optimal order, a universal time dependence is obtained, confirming a general result of Dingle and Berry. This optimally truncated particle number provides a clear picture of quantum interference effects for perturbations with non-trivial temporal sub-structure. We illustrate these results using several equivalent definitions of adiabatic particle number: the Bogoliubov, Riccati, Spectral Function and Schrodinger picture approaches. In each approach, the particle number may be expressed in terms of the tiny deviations between the exact and adiabatic solutions of the Ermakov-Milne equation for the associated time-dependent oscillators.

The Schwinger effect is the non-perturbative production of electron-positron pairs when an external electric field is applied to the quantum electrodynamical (QED) vacuum. The inherent instability of the vacuum in an electric field was one of the first non-trivial predictions of QED, but the effect is so weak that it has not yet been directly observed. However, there are exciting new developments in ultra-high intensity lasers, which may bring us to the verge of this extreme ultra-relativistic regime. This necessitates a fresh look at both experimental and theoretical aspects of the Schwinger effect. I describe some new theoretical ideas aimed at making this elusive effect observable, by careful shaping of the laser pulses, much as is done [in a different intensity regime] in the fast-developing field of atto-science.

We show that the Ginzburg-Landau expansion of the grand potential for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian is determined by the integrable nonlinear equations of the AKNS hierarchy, and that this provides the natural mathematical framework for a hidden nonlinear quantum mechanical supersymmetry underlying the dynamics., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures; published version

Since the work of Sauter, and Heisenberg, Euler and Kockel, it has been understood that vacuum polarization effects in quantum electrodynamics (QED) predict remarkable new phenomena such as light-light scattering and pair production from vacuum. However, these fundamental effects are difficult to probe experimentally because they are very weak, and they are difficult to analyze theoretically because they are highly nonlinear and/or nonperturbative. The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project offers the possibility of a new window into this largely unexplored world. I review these ideas, along with some new results, explaining why quantum field theorists are so interested in this rapidly developing field of laser science. I concentrate on the theoretical tools that have been developed to analyze nonperturbative vacuum pair production.

This is an introductory level review of recent applications of resurgent trans-series and Picard-Lefschetz theory to quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. Resurgence connects local perturbative data with global topological structure. In quantum mechanical systems, this program provides a constructive relation between different saddles. For example, in certain cases it has been shown that all information around the instanton saddle is encoded in perturbation theory around the perturbative saddle. In quantum field theory, such as sigma models compactified on a circle, neutral bions provide a semi-classical interpretation of the elusive IR-renormalon, and fractional kink instantons lead to the non-perturbatively induced gap, of order of the strong scale. In the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, saddles must be found by solving the holomorphic Newton's equation in the inverted (holomorphized) potential. Some saddles are complex, multi-valued, and even singular, but of finite action, and their inclusion is strictly necessary to prevent inconsistencies. The multi-valued saddles enter either via resurgent cancellations, or their phase is tied with a hidden topological angle. We emphasize the importance of the destructive/constructive interference effects between equally dominant saddles in the Lefschetz thimble decomposition. In the context of two illustrative examples from supersymmetric quantum mechanics we show that the semi-classical analysis of the path integral requires complexification of the configuration space and action, and the inclusion of complex saddle points, even when the parameters in the action are real. We find new exact complex saddles, and show that without their contribution the semi-classical expansion is in conflict with basic properties such as positive-semidefiniteness of the spectrum, and constraints of supersymmetry. Generic saddles are not only complex, but also possibly multi-valued, and even singular. This is in contrast to instanton solutions, which are real, smooth, and single-valued. The multi-valuedness of the action can be interpreted as a hidden topological angle, quantized in units of $\pi$ in supersymmetric theories. The second-order hydrodynamical description of a homogeneous conformal plasma that undergoes a boost- invariant expansion is given by a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation, whose resurgent asymptotic properties we study, developing further the recent work of Heller and Spalinski [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 072501 (2015)]. Resurgence clearly identifies the non-hydrodynamic modes that are exponentially suppressed at late times, analogous to the quasi-normal-modes in gravitational language, organizing these modes in terms of a trans-series expansion. These modes are analogs of instantons in semi-classical expansions, where the damping rate plays the role of the instanton action. We show that this system displays the generic features of resurgence, with explicit quantitative relations between the fluctuations about different orders of these non-hydrodynamic modes. The imaginary part of the trans-series parameter is identified with the Stokes constant, and the real part with the freedom associated with initial conditions., 29 pages, 13 figures

We use the connection between infrared (IR) renormalons and condensates in the operator product expansion for correlation functions to make predictions concerning the structure of singularities in the Borel plane for the perturbative series in quantum field theories with different levels of supersymmetry. The same conspiracy can be used for establishing the absence of condensates or IR renormalons in gauge theories with an IR conformal regime or gauge theories in the Higgs phase. The absence of the renormalon-induced factorial divergence implies that instanton contributions (where present) must be well defined. We show that the conventional bubble-chain method for detecting renormalon-induced factorial divergences in these theories is not sufficient.

We derive simple new expressions, in various dimensions, for the functional determinant of a radially separable partial differential operator, thereby generalizing the one-dimensional result of Gel'fand and Yaglom to higher dimensions. We use the zeta function formalism, and the results agree with what one would obtain using the angular momentum cutoff method based on radial WKB. It is known that exactly self-dual gauge-field configurations with topological charge |Q|=1 cannot exist on the untwisted continuum 4-torus. We explore the manifestation of this remarkable fact on the lattice 4-torus for SU(3) using advanced techniques for controlling lattice discretization errors, extending earlier work of De Forcrand et. al. for SU(2). We identify three distinct signals for the instability of |Q|=1 configurations, and show that these manifest themselves early in the cooling process, long before the would-be instanton has shrunk to a size comparable to the lattice discretization threshold. These signals do not appear for our |Q|=2 configurations. This indicates that these signals reflect the truly global nature of the instability, rather than local discretization effects. Monte-Carlo generated SU(3) gauge field configurations are cooled to the self-dual limit using an O(a^4)-improved gauge action chosen to have small but positive O(a^6) errors. This choice prevents lattice discretization errors from destroying instantons provided their size exceeds the dislocation threshold of the cooling algorithm. Lattice discretization errors are evaluated by comparing the O(a^4)-improved gauge-field action with an O(a^4)-improved action constructed from the square of an O(a^4)-improved lattice field-strength tensor, thus having different O(a^6) discretization errors. The number of action-density peaks, the instanton size and the topological charge of configurations is monitored. We observe a fluctuation in the total topological charge of |Q|=1 configurations, and demonstrate that the onset of this unusual behavior corresponds with the disappearance of multiple-peaks in the action density. The Lame model, a quasi-exactly solvable model with energy-reflection duality, exhibits an explicit duality between the perturbative and nonperturbative sectors.

We study the phase diagram for two-color QCD in three-dimensional spacetime, as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential, using the low-energy effective Lagrangian approach. We show one-loop renormalizability at zero temperature, and then use the one-loop effective Lagrangian at finite temperature and chemical potential to show that at low temperature there is a critical line separating the normal and diquark phase, with this critical line ending at a tricritical point. This phase structure is qualitatively similar to that found recently by Splittorff et al for two-color QCD in four-dimensional spacetime, although the details are quite different, due to the different symmetries and the different loop and infrared properties of three-dimensional spacetime., Comment: 14 pp, 1 fig

We study the non-perturbative dynamics of the two dimensional ${O(N)}$ and Grassmannian sigma models by using compactification with twisted boundary conditions on $\mathbb R \times S^1$, semi-classical techniques and resurgence. While the $O(N)$ model has no instantons for $N>3$, it has (non-instanton) saddles on $\mathbb R^2$, which we call 2d-saddles. On $\mathbb R \times S^1$, the resurgent relation between perturbation theory and non-perturbative physics is encoded in new saddles, which are associated with the affine root system of the ${\frak o}(N) $ algebra. These events may be viewed as fractionalizations of the 2d-saddles. The first beta function coefficient, given by the dual Coxeter number, can then be intepreted as the sum of the multiplicities (dual Kac labels) of these fractionalized objects. Surprisingly, the new saddles in $O(N)$ models in compactified space are in one-to-one correspondence with monopole-instanton saddles in $SO(N)$ gauge theory on $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$. The Grassmannian sigma models ${ \rm Gr}(N, M)$ have 2d instantons, which fractionalize into $N$ kink-instantons. The small circle dynamics of both sigma models can be described as a dilute gas of the one-events and two-events, bions. One-events are the leading source of a variety of non-perturbative effects, and produce the strong scale of the 2d theory in the compactified theory. We show that in both types of sigma models the neutral bion emulates the role of IR-renormalons. We also study the topological theta angle dependence in both the $O(3)$ model and ${ \rm Gr}(N, M)$, and describe the multi-branched structure of the observables in terms of the theta-angle dependence of the saddle amplitudes., 32 pages, 6 figures
