Background: Global forced displacement has been rising steeply since 2015 as a result of wars and human rights abuses. Forcibly displaced people are often exposed to physical and mental strain, which can cause traumatic experiences and poor mental health. Physical activity has been linked with better mental health, although such evidence is scarce among those populations. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships of self-reported physical activity and fitness with mental health indices among people residing in a refugee camp in Greece as asylum seekers. Methods: Participants were 151 individuals (76 women, 75 men; mean age 28.90 y) displaced from their homes for an average of 32.03 months. Among them, 67% were from Afghanistan and countries from southwest Asia, and 33% from sub-Saharan African countries. Participants completed self-report measures assessing physical activity, fitness, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and well-being. Results: High prevalence of mental health disorder symptoms and poor well-being were identified, with women and Asians showing poorer mental health. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety were related to perceived fitness, but not to self-reported physical activity. Regression analysis showed that perceived fitness (β: 0.34; 95% CI, 0.43 to 1.52) and low-intensity physical activity (β: 0.24; 95% CI, 0.001 to 0.009) significantly positively predicted well-being, showing small to medium effect. Conclusions: The findings provide useful insights regarding the link between physical activity and well-being; nevertheless, further research examining objectively measured physical activity is warranted to complement these data and further explore the associations between physical activity and mental health. Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that adolescents' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with less off-task behaviour in the classroom. However, the contribution of cognitive functions to this relation still remains unclear. Executive function and aspects of social cognition, which appear to be correlated with MVPA, have been found to determine academic behaviours. Aim: This study examines the direct association between MVPA and off-task behaviour as well as mediations by different cognitive domains. Sample: Forty-six-male and 67-female adolescents aged 13.0 ± 1.3 years were recruited from local schools. Methods: Participants recalled their MVPA. Using video cameras, their classroom behaviours were recorded and a 6-min period was rated for off-task behaviour. Additionally, participants completed a modified Flanker task, which assessed both inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, a Sternberg paradigm, which assessed working memory, and an Emotion Recognition task. Results: Path-analyses revealed that higher MVPA was associated with less off-task behaviour. Inhibitory control accounted for a partial mediation of this association. The mediating role of inhibitory control was most pronounced for the relation between MVPA and off-task behaviours related to noise. Conclusion: These findings provide a first indication that curricular and extracurricular physical activities targeting specific improvements in inhibitory control may promise transfer effects to classroom behaviours.

Background: School-based physical education has been associated with a multitude of potential learning outcomes. Representatives of a public health perspective suggest that promoting physical activity in and outside the context of school is an important endeavour. While the importance of behavioural skill training to improve (motor) learning is well documented in both general and physical education, the promotion of behavioural skills to foster physically active lifestyles constitutes a rather neglected area in physical education research. Purpose: To examine whether a standardized physical education-based behavioural skill training program has the potential to positively impact on adolescents' self-reported exercise and sport participation, as well as cognitive antecedents involved in the regulation of exercise and sport behaviour. Research design: Cluster-randomized controlled trial. Methods: A sample of 143 secondary school students (50% girls, aged 14-18 years) attending academic high schools in German-speaking Switzerland were assigned class-wise to the intervention (behavioural skill training) and control condition (conventional physical education lessons). Data were assessed prior and after completion of the 7-week intervention program, which was composed of four 20-min lessons and two reflection phases. Exercise and sport behaviour and cognitive antecedents (exercise/sport intention, motivation, implementation intentions, coping planning, self-efficacy) were assessed via self-reports. A multilevel mixed effects linear regression procedure was used to test the main hypotheses. The regression analyses were adjusted for clustering of school classes, and controlled for baseline levels of the outcome measure and potential confounders. Results: Compared to a control condition, the intervention program resulted in significant improvements with regard to introjected motivation (p < 0.05), coping planning (p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (p < 0.01). The intervention also had a positive impact on adolescents' self-reported sport/exercise behaviour (p < 0.001). Improvements in exercise/sport intention (p < 0.05), coping planning (p < 0.01), and self-efficacy (p < 0.01) were associated with increased levels of self-reported exercise/sport participation. Conclusion: Behavioural skill training as part of compulsory physical education has the potential to improve cognitive antecedents of exercise and sport behaviour and to foster adolescents' exercise and sport participation. Enhancing behavioural skills might be one way in which school physical education can contribute to the creation of more physically active lifestyles among adolescents.

Introduction: The first-line treatment for opioid dependence is opioid agonist treatment (OAT) with oral opioids. However, in some cases, treatment with intravenous diacetylmorphine (IV-DAM) is indicated. Research on neurocognitive impairments and treatment effects of OAT - particularly with IV-DAM - on neurocognitive functioning, is scarce. The current study is the first to investigate the neurocognitive performance of individuals on OAT with IV-DAM. Using a prospective study designwith two timepoints of measurement, the first aimwas toassess thenature and extent of neurocognitive functioning in individuals with opioid dependence by comparing participants' neurocognitive performance with normative data of the general population on admission to treatment (baseline) and after an initial three-month period of OAT (study end). The second aim was to examine whether and to what extent neurocognitive performance would improve after three months on OAT. The third aim was to investigate whether, and if so, to what extent the treatment method (IV-DAM vs. oral opioids) would lead to higher neurocognitive improvements at study end. Methods: Forty-seven opioid-dependent individuals (baseline; 33 individuals at study end) participated in this study (mean age: 34.3 years; 27.7% female). Participants underwent neuropsychological testing with a battery of 12 tests covering different neurocognitive domains, including attention, memory, and executive functions. Results: Compared to normative data, opioid-dependent individuals showed impairments in almost every test both at baseline and at study end. At baseline, neurocognitive performance did not differ between individuals receiving IV-DAM or oral opioids forOAT.Compared to baseline, the neurocognitive performance did neither improve nor deteriorate after three months of treatment with neither IV-DAM nor oral opioids. However, a trend towards improvement was found for the memory domain. Discussion: Given that neurocognitive impairments should be considered in treatment planning and therapeutic interventions. Since a reduced cognitive performance may affect both the treatment outcome and the therapeutic relationship unfavorably, specific neurocognitive training at the beginning of treatment should be considered. Introduction: Evidence suggests that acute exercise benefits inhibitory control, but it remains unclear how physical and cognitive load influence this ability in preadolescent children, when faced with different types of distractors. We examined their moderating effects along with changes in prefrontal cortex hemodynamics. Methods: Using a crossover design, 29 participants completed 10 min of exercise (with an interactive training wall) at 1) low physical and low cognitive load, 2) low physical and high cognitive load, 3) high physical and low cognitive load, and 4) high physical and high cognitive load in a randomized order. Before and after each condition, they performed a Standard and Affective Stroop task. During both tasks, the lateral oxygenation difference in the prefrontal cortex was measured by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Results: For the Standard Stroop task, there was no effect of physical and cognitive load on performance. In contrast, exercise with low compared with high cognitive load was associated with a greater reduction of reaction time and increase in accuracy on the Affective Stroop task. This was accompanied by a decrease in lateral oxygenation difference on trials with low inhibitory control demands. Conclusions: Acute exercise with low compared with high cognitive demand benefits the ability to resolve emotional conflict, but the control over inhibition of nonemotional information remains unaffected. This effect of cognitive load is complemented by an increased efficiency of the left prefrontal cortex, when no emotional conflict resolution is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
