Abstract

Today, web-based companies use user data to provide and enhance services to users, both individually and collectively. Some also analyze user data for other purposes, for example to select advertisements or price offers for users. Some even use or allow the data to be used to evaluate investments in financial markets. Users' concerns about how their data is or may be used has prompted legislative action in the European Union and congressional questioning in the United States. But data can also benefit society, for example giving early warnings for disease outbreaks, allowing in-depth study of relationships between genetics and disease, and elucidating local and macroeconomic trends in a timely manner. So, instead of just a focus on privacy, in the future, users may insist that their data be used on their behalf. We explore potential frameworks for groups of consenting, informed users to pool their data for their own benefit and that of society, discussing directions, challenges, and evolution for such efforts.

7. Postcards from the platteland: Avant-garde Aesthetics and Nostalgia in Poskantoor’s (2014) Paratexts

Abstract

Following its premiere in 2014, the Afrikaans opera Poskantoor (2014) was the first full-length Afrikaans opera to grace the South African opera stage for some decades. The production’s musicological reception has been positive: Mareli Stolp argued, for example, that Poskantoor’s comic medium enables the work to offer political and socio-cultural critiques, ‘without adopting or supporting an openly political stance’ (Stolp 2016, 152-53). My reading of the opera will contend that, described as a ‘nostalgic story’ and cloaked under a satirical guise, Poskantoor dangerously flirts with nostalgic reflections of Afrikanerdom that may be regarded as problematic, especially considering the country’s apartheid legacy and the white elitism associated with the dissemination of opera in South Africa during the regime. In line with interdisciplinary approaches in global opera research that embrace the media of opera, this article focuses on Poskantoor’s YouTube trailer – a paratext that unsettles the opera’s nostalgic indulgences. Investigating the interactions between nostalgia and the avant-garde, this article explores the subtle interplay between references that indulge Afrikaner nostalgia (a prominent theme in Afrikaans cultural products post-1994), and an avant-garde aesthetic that attempts to distance Poskantoor from the genre’s apartheid legacy. I argue that the latter succeeds in acting as a catalyst that questions Afrikaans musical and cultural remnants.

8. (De)coding Contemporary South African Opera: Multimodality and the Creation of Meaning, 2010–2018

Abstract

Congruent with new investigative avenues considering the mediatisation and increased digital dissemination of opera, this thesis contributes to new directions in the field of opera studies. It promotes a multimodal analysis of opera production to uncover the multitude of, and relationships between, semiotic elements influencing the reception of opera production, specifically as it pertains to contemporary South African opera. I present multimodal readings of three South African operas: Saartjie (2009), Poskantoor (2014) and Mandela Trilogy (2011/2014), focusing on the interplay between elements ranging from musical and visual modes of opera production to paratexts and the audience’s own subjectivity – to gauge their impact on reception. I draw on the work of Michael Hutcheon and Linda Hutcheon, and Yayoi Uno Everett, who, in varying degrees, unpack the multimodal communication of opera as an artform comprising multiple modes. I devise a multimodal framework for the analysis of opera production divided into four categories encompassing the multiple elements complicit in the creation of meaning in opera production: (1) design modes, (2) production media, (3) paratextual networks, and (4) horizons of expectation. Consistent with the genre’s increased digital presence, I significantly expand paratextual networks to include the video trailer as a meaning-encoded paratext capable of shaping audiences’ expectations. Redirecting the focus from the score as the primary semiotic source, the analytic approach adopted in this study drew heavily on video resources available in the public domain, extending to both production media and paratextual networks. In addition, media archives were utilised to inform the critical reception of the works discussed. The intricacies of the multimodal network are illustrated by focusing on a select set of relationships across categories, applying strategies of close reading to three contemporary South African opera productions. He discussed several topics including women's right for access to the contraceptives, federal provisions for unintended pregnancies, and birth control laws in the U.S. with relevance to the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in Griswold v. Connecticut.

Abstract

Previous studies assess the representation of women in journalism; however, few specifically look at broadcast journalism and crisis reporting. This content analysis analyzes approximately 40 years of national network news crisis coverage to determine the representation of female journalists in crisis reporting. Overall, this study found while female journalists were responsible for more crisis coverage with the progression of time,women were still underrepresented. Furthermore, through categorizing the crises, this study found an association between the nature of the crisis situation and the gender of the reporters covering it; overall, female journalists were most underrepresented in accident crisis coverage.

13. An investigation of the relationship between performance expertise and melodic ear-to-h and coordination of music patterns within various degrees of contextual constraint.

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between expertise of one's principal instrument and the ear-to-h and performance achievement of various aural melodic patterns. Melodic patterns were constructed in such a manner as to reflect three degrees of contextual constraint from classical Western tonal music. Subjects were selected from those who are professional expert violists and those who are amateur novice violists, taking as subjects those who play viola in two professional orchestras and in two high school orchestras. One professional orchestra research group and one high school orchestra research group was assigned to one of two tests: Test of Musical Context (TMC) or Computer Generated Test of Musical Context (CGTMC). The TMC and CGTMC differed in the manner by which the melodic patterns were selected. In the TMC, the patterns were constructed by h and ; in the CGTMC, the patterns were generated by a computer. The two tests were designed by the investigator as a three-subtest battery to assess the respondent's ability to replicate music patterns in a listen-imitate format (ear-to-h and ). The patterns ranged from r and om music approximations (Subtest 1) to music patterns generated from systematically increased degrees of contextual constraint simulating classical Western tonal music (Subtests 2 and 3). Differences between groups on the TMC Subtests 1, 2, and 3 and CGTMC Subtests 2 and 3 were significant favoring the expert research groups. It appears that ear-to-h and skills are affected by expertise of one's principal instrument. However, when the melodic patterns were r and omly generated for the CGTMC (Subtest 1), there were no differences between novice and expert subjects' performances of the melodic patterns. In addition, as the contextual constraint used in generating the melodic patterns between subtests increased, a significant difference occurred in the TMC and the CGTMC scores between subtests for expert subjects, but not for novice subjects. It appears that the expert learning of music involves learning the general coding system based on the probabilities that characterize music patterns in classical Western tonal music.
