Abstract

Present and future climatic trends are expected to markedly alter water fluxes and stores in the hydrologic cycle. In addition, water demand continues to grow due to increased human use and a growing population. Sustainably managing water resources requires a thorough understanding of water storage and flow in natural, agricultural, and urban ecosystems. Measurements of stable isotopes of water (hydrogen and oxygen) in the water cycle (atmosphere, soils, plants, surface water, and groundwater) can provide information on the transport pathways, sourcing, dynamics, ages, and storage pools of water that is difficult to obtain with other techniques. However, the potential of these techniques for practical questions has not been fully exploited yet. Here, we outline the benefits and limitations of potential applications of stable isotope methods useful to water managers, farmers, and other stakeholders. We also describe several case studies demonstrating how stable isotopes of water can support water management decision-making. Finally, we propose a workflow that guides users through a sequence of decisions required to apply stable isotope methods to examples of water management issues. We call for ongoing dialogue and a stronger connection between water management stakeholders and water stable isotope practitioners to identify the most pressing issues and develop best-practice guidelines to apply these techniques.

Abstract

The analysis of the stable isotopic composition of hydrogen and oxygen in water samples from soils and plants can help to identify sources of vegetation water uptake. This approach requires that the heterogeneous nature of plant and soil matrices is carefully accounted for during experimental design, sample collection, water extraction and analyses. The comparability and shortcomings of the different methods for extracting water and analyzing isotopic composition have been discussed in specialized literature. Yet, despite insightful comparisons of extraction methods and benchmarking methodologies of laboratories worldwide, the community still lacks a roadmap to guide sample collection, extraction, and isotopic analyses, and many practical issues for potential users remain unresolved: for example, which (soil or plant) water pool(s) does the extracted water represent? These constitute a hurdle for the implementation of the approach by newcomers. Here, we summarize discussions led in the framework of the COST Action WATSON (“WATer isotopeS in the critical zONe: from groundwater recharge to plant transpiration”—CA19120). We provide guidelines for (1) sampling soil and plant material for isotopic analysis, (2) methods for laboratory or in situ water extraction, and (3) measurements of isotopic composition. We highlight the importance of considering the process chain as a whole, from experimental design to isotopic analysis to minimize biased estimates of the relative contribution of different water sources to plant water uptake. We conclude by acknowledging some of the limitations of this methodology and advice on the collection of key environmental parameters prior to sample collection for isotopic analyses. 18. The role of sampling strategy on apparent temporal stability of soil moisture under subtropical hydroclimatic conditions

Abstract

Subtropical regions have clay-rich, weathered soils, and long dry periods followed by intense rainfall that produces large fluctuations in soil water content (SWC) and hydrological behavior. This complicates predictions of spatio-temporal dynamics, as datasets are typically collected at too coarse resolution and observations often represent a duration that is too short to capture temporal stability. The aim of the present study was to gain further insights into the role of temporal sampling scale on the observed temporal stability features of SWC order to aid the design of optimal SWC sampling strategies. This focused on both sampling frequency and total monitoring duration, as previous analyses have not considered both of these sampling aspects simultaneously. We collected relatively high resolution data of SWC (fortnightly over 3.5 years) for various soil depths and under contrasting crops (peanuts and citrus) at the red soil region of southeast China. The dataset was split into a three-year training period and a six-month evaluation period. Altogether 13 sampling frequencies (intervals ranging from 15 to 240 days) and eight monitoring duration periods (between three and 36 months) were derived from the training period to identify temporal stability features and the most time stable location (MTSL). The prediction accuracies of these MTSLs were tested using the independent evaluation data. Results showed that vegetation type did affect the spatio-temporal patterns of SWC, whereby the citrus site exhibited a stronger temporal variation and weaker temporal stability than the peanut site. However, the effects of both sampling frequency and observation duration were more pronounced, irrespective of the role of vegetation type or soil depth. With increasing sampling interval or decreasing monitoring duration, temporal stability of SWC was generally overestimated; by less than 10% when sampling interval increased from every 15 to 240 days and by up to 40% with duration decreasing from 36 to 3 months. Our results suggest that sampling strategies and trade-offs between sampling interval and duration should focus on capturing the main variability in hydro-climatological conditions. For subtropical conditions, we found that sampling once every 45 days over 24 months to be the minimum sampling strategy to ensure errors in SWC temporal stability of less than 10%.

19. Multiscale impacts of land use/management changes on flood response in the River Hodder catchment, North-West England

Abstract

There is substantial evidence that land use/management changes (LUMCs) can impact runoff generation at the local scale; however, it is unclear how these impacts are modified as they travel through the river channel network to affect downstream catchment flooding. There is a need for data from multiscale monitoring studies in catchments undergoing known LUMCs to assess the extent to which impacts can be detected at increasing catchment scales. This understanding is needed in developing reliable methods for assessing the potential of rural based flood prevention and mitigation measures, urgently required by catchment planners. The aim of the present study is to generate and analyse a new multiscale dataset which will serve to gain a better understanding of the effects of local LUMCs on catchment response at increasing scales. This study investigates the impacts of recent LUMCs (drain blocking, stocking density changes, and afforestation) in the headwaters of the River Hodder (261 km²), North-West England, UK. An unusually dense nested monitoring network (28 stream gauges) was set up at scales ranging rom ~1 ha to 261 km². Data Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and a simple Storage Discharge Detection (SDD) model were used to compare pre- and post-change hydrographs at increasing scales in an effort to detect short-term change signals and their propagation to larger scales. A novel physically based Model for Upland Runoff Storage and Flow Fields (MURSAFF) was developed to further investigate the short- and long-term impacts of LUMC in complex landscapes at the micro catchment scale (~1 km²). The results were integrated into a semi-distributed catchment impact routing model to explore the effects on the downstream catchment response. No statistically significant evidence was found in the DBM and SDD results to suggest that any of the LUMCs had a short-term impact on catchment response at scales from 1 km² up to the Hodder catchment scale (261 km²). This is attributed to the proportion of area affected by change, the timescale of impacts, and the natural variability in catchment response. Short-term small scale (< 1 km²) field observations and MURSAFF predictions of the impacts of drain blocking involved an increase in the local storage and change in the flow fields. However, these changes are insignificant at the micro catchment scale. The MURSAFF simulated impacts of reductions in stocking density involve attenuation of the flood hydrograph mainly. Predictions of the downstream effects suggest they will be relatively small and different for each storm, with the lack of internal synchronisation of the sub-catchment responses and the natural variability therein being dominant factors in determining the impacts on the catchment outlet response. These predictions are consistent with the failure to detect any significant impacts in the post-change records.

20. Assessing the role of location and scale of Nature Based Solutions for the enhancement of low flows.

Abstract

Water resources management during drought is a significant challenge worldwide, particularly for upland areas. Additionally, variations in water availability are becoming more extreme with climate change. Nature Based Solutions (NBS) e.g. Runoff Attenuation Features (RAFs) could provide an alternative to hard-engineering. Using more natural processes, flow pathways are intercepted and attenuated in features during wet periods, increasing infiltration opportunity and thus water availability for use later. NBS research has primarily focused on flood mitigation, but little is known about low flow impacts; knowledge is required on where and at what scale to implement NBS. To explore these questions, we used a physically-based catchment model (MIKE SHE) integrated with a hydraulic river model (MIKE 11) to evaluate scenarios with varying RAF volumes and locations. We applied this to an intensively monitored upland Scottish catchment (0.9 km2) where 40 RAFs (∼2m3 storage each) were installed for low flow enhancement. Model results showed installed RAFs increase recharge (∼0.1%), groundwater contribution to streamflow (∼4%) and low flows (∼1%) and reduce high (∼5%) and mean flows (∼2%), suggesting RAFs could be used to mitigate extreme flows. The scenarios revealed that RAF location (primarily soil type) and scale (total storage volume and spread of features) were both important. Doubling installed RAF volumes increased impact on low flows by ∼25% and high flows by ∼40%, although lower additional benefits were predicted with further storage increases. RAFs had greater impact in freely-draining soils than poorly-draining, however distributing the same storage volume across many smaller RAFs over greater areas (both soil types) provided the largest effect. Absolute changes observed were relatively small, and given model uncertainty, should be treated with caution. Nevertheless, the direction of change was clear and given ecological systems and water supply rely on small margins of change, even slight increases in low flows will likely be beneficial. Abstract

Climate change increases the occurrence and severity of droughts due to increasing temperatures, altered circulation patterns, and reduced snow occurrence. While Europe has suffered from drought events in the last decade unlike ever seen since the beginning of weather recordings, harmonized long-term datasets across the continent are needed to monitor change and support predictions. Here we present soil moisture data from 66 cosmic-ray neutron sensors (CRNSs) in Europe (COSMOS-Europe for short) covering recent drought events. The CRNS sites are distributed across Europe and cover all major land use types and climate zones in Europe. The raw neutron count data from the CRNS stations were provided by 24 research institutions and processed using state-of-the-art methods. The harmonized processing included correction of the raw neutron counts and a harmonized methodology for the conversion into soil moisture based on available in situ information. In addition, the uncertainty estimate is provided with the dataset, information that is particularly useful for remote sensing and modeling applications. This paper presents the current spatiotemporal coverage of CRNS stations in Europe and describes the protocols for data processing from raw measurements to consistent soil moisture products. The data of the presented COSMOS-Europe network open up a manifold of potential applications for environmental research, such as remote sensing data validation, trend analysis, or model assimilation. The dataset could be of particular importance for the analysis of extreme climatic events at the continental scale. Due its timely relevance in the scope of climate change in the recent years, we demonstrate this potential application with a brief analysis on the spatiotemporal soil moisture variability. Abstract

It is necessary to combine the understanding of physical environmental drivers with social, economic, cultural and political perspectives and information to build resilience to future flood and drought hazards. We present a flexible collaborative modelling approach to improve resilience to hydrological extremes in large basins with application to the Limpopo River Basin (LRB). It uses an iterative, knowledge co-production process to strengthen crucial bridges between scientists and water management stakeholders on the appropriate scale(s). In the proposed collaborative modelling approach, the integrated hydro(geo)logical model is combined with regional to transboundary people’s knowledges and policies. We analyse the effect and importance of stakeholders’ feedback on the numerical model prediction. The proposed methodology is applied in the Limpopo River Basin (LRB) where floods and droughts are recurrent events. Through this iterative multisector collaborative modelling approach, we aim to develop a reliable and feasible management instrument to help reduce the impact of alternating droughts and floods and increase the resilience to hydrological extremes.
