Propolis is a valuable natural resource for extracting various beneficial compounds. This study explores a sustainable extraction approach for Brazilian green propolis. First, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process parameters were optimized (co-solvent: 21.11% v/v CPME, and temperature: 60 °C) to maximize yield, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity, and LOX (lipoxygenase) inhibitory activity. GC–MS analysis identified 40 metabolites in SFE extracts, including fatty acids, terpenoids, phenolics, and sterols. After selecting the optimum SFE process parameters, a sequential high-pressure extraction (HPE) approach was developed, comprising SFE, pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with EtOH/H2O, and subcritical water extraction (SWE). This process was compared to a similar sequential extraction using low-pressure extractions (LPE) with a Soxhlet extractor. The HPE process achieved a significantly higher overall yield (80.86%) than LPE (71.43%). SFE showed higher selectivity, resulting in a lower carbohydrate content in the non-polar fraction, and PLE extracted nearly twice the protein amount of LPE–2. Despite the HPE selectivity, LPE extracts exhibited better acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and LOX inhibition, demonstrating that the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts may be associated with a symbiosis of a set of compounds. Finally, a comprehensive greenness assessment revealed that the HPE process proved more sustainable and aligned with green chemistry principles than the LPE method.

In recent decades, biomasses from different industrial segments have created new interesting perspectives, including sustainable development. Moreover, reusing waste, such as biomass, also impacts the economy, i.e., the circular economy. The main biomasses and their applications are evident in the energy, food, chemistry, fine chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. Several questions should be asked regarding the trending topic of the circular economy, including biomass availability and seasonality, energy demand (processes), and the real environmental impact. Thus, this review focuses on biomass collected from non-conventional (unusual technology at the industrial scale) food-processing residues, particularly from 2016 to 2023, to produce biomaterials and/or bioproducts for the food sector.

Cassava starch nanoparticles (SNP) were produced using the nanoprecipitation method after modification of starch granules using ultrasound (US) or heat–moisture treatment (HMT). To produce SNP, cassava starches were gelatinized (95 °C/30 min) and precipitated after cooling, using absolute ethanol. SNPs were isolated using centrifugation and lyophilized. The nanoparticles produced from native starch and starches modified using US or HMT, named NSNP, USNP and HSNP, respectively, were characterized in terms of their main physical or functional properties. The SNP showed cluster plate formats, which were smooth for particles produced from native starch (NSNP) and rough for particles from starch modified with US (USNP) or HMT (HSNP), with smaller size ranges presented by HSNP (~63–674 nm) than by USNP (~123–1300 nm) or NSNP (~25–1450 nm). SNP had low surface charge values and a V-type crystalline structure. FTIR and thermal analyses confirmed the reduction of crystallinity. The SNP produced after physical pretreatments (US, HMT) showed an improvement in lipophilicity, with their oil absorption capacity in decreasing order being HSNP > USNP > NSNP, which was confirmed by the significant increase in contact angles from ~68.4° (NSNP) to ~76° (USNP; HSNP). A concentration of SNP higher than 4% may be required to produce stability with 20% oil content. The emulsions produced with HSNP showed stability during the storage (7 days at 20 °C), whereas the emulsions prepared with NSNP exhibited phase separation after preparation. The results suggested that dual physical modifications could be used for the production of starch nanoparticles as stabilizers for Pickering emulsions with stable characteristics.

Phenolic compounds from propolis extract (PE) have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties; however, extracts from this raw material are not water soluble. This study aimed to stabilize the phenolic compounds from green propolis extract in cassava and potato starch nanoparticles produced by the anti-solvent precipitation method. The obtained materials displayed a crystalline structure related to starch nanomaterials with a V6h-type crystalline structure. The starch nanoparticles interacted with the phenolic compounds by means of hydrogen bonds and increased the hydrophobicity in the nanomaterials. The developed starch nanomaterials loaded with the phenolic compounds from PE could be potentially used as a novel ingredient in food packaging.

Pectin is a polysaccharide that is known for its gelling properties and its applications in the pharmaceutical industry. This can be divided into two structural groups, high methoxyl pectins (HMP) and low methoxyl pectins (LMP). Currently, there is little information on the properties of the orange pectin in which LPM predominates. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the mechanical properties of gels produced with pectin isolated from orange peels. The results showed similar values to those found in the literature, except for hardness. The gels produced from the pectin could be used in the industry, the formulation varying depending on the application.

Los planes de desarrollo departamental del Valle del Cauca y Cauca, en su gran mayoría, han sido instrumentos de legitimación y validación del monocultivo de la caña de azúcar y de la agroindustria cañera. 11 planes de desarrollo regional de los departamentos del Valle del Cauca y Cauca, propuestos durante el periodo 1990-2019, fueron analizados. El análisis propuesto giró en torno a si en dichas políticas públicas se aludía o no de manera directa a los efectos negativos (ecosistémicos y étnico territoriales) generados por el monocultivo de la caña de azúcar y la agroindustria cañera en los dos entes territoriales. Se apeló a la hermenéutica y al análisis histórico y crítico de documentos y circunstancias contextuales del orden nacional y regional. El artículo se inscribe en la Ecología Política, asumida como un campo en el que es posible confrontar discursos y discursividades, en especial aquellos y aquellas derivadas de ejercicios de poder y contrapoder o de resistencia comunitaria.

Tungurahua province has conditions suitable for growing deciduous fruit trees such as peach (Prunus persica L). This research aimed to identify the main factors influencing the production of this fruit crop and their effect on farmers income. Surveys were carried out directly to peach farmers in seven counties of Tungurahua such as Ambato, Cevallos, Mocha, Patate, Pelileo, Píllaro and Tisaleo. The results indicated that the most relevant factors were: farmer age, sown area, fruit selection, reason for fruit growing, type of production and production issues.

En este artículo, se discurre alrededor de la comunicación, la estética-ética y la sostenibilidad como campos de saber y disciplinas y las hace confluir en el monocultivo de la caña de azúcar, asumido como un fenómeno estético-ambiental. Se propone enunciados categoriales con los que se busca avanzar en el complejo análisis de una realidad agroindustrial sostenida en un orden simbólico y cultural específico, que traspasa los límites de la señalada práctica agrícola que debe y puede ser mirada y analizada desde la perspectiva del pensamiento ambiental complejo. Además, se exponen tres acápites transversalmente conectados por las dimensiones estética, ética, comunicativa y ambiental. En un primer momento, se da cuenta de lo que se entiende por comunicación y sus conexiones disciplinares. En un segundo momento se alude al objeto de la reflexión: el monocultivo de la caña de azúcar. En un tercer estadio, se abordan los temas de la sostenibilidad y la estética-ética, para intentar ‘atrapar’, con fines comprensivos, el monocultivo de la caña de azúcar.

La urbanización Potrero Grande es un barrio del oriente de Cali construido por los agentes del Estado para reasentar un número significativo de hogares que habitaban en zonas marginales de la ciudad. Este barrio es considerado hoy como uno de los más violentos porque presenta las tasas más altas de homicidios. Este hecho ha repercutido de modo negativo en el imaginario de la ciudadanía, que ve en Potrero Grande un foco de delincuentes y criminales. La urbanización presenta un encerramiento simbólico por la marginación, exclusión y estigma que pesa sobre sus habitantes.

En el artículo se hace un recorrido histórico acerca del proceso de dominación y domesticación de la naturaleza, que sirvió a los propósitos de la agroindustria cañicultora instalada en el Valle del Cauca y que extendió sus dominios al valle geográfi co del río Cauca (Colombia). La lectura crítica la asume el autor desde la ecología política, y desde ese campo se le propone llamar al agroecosistema de la caña de azúcar como Enclave Artifi cial Desnaturalizante (EAD). Con estas categorías se expone un ejercicio refl exivo y crítico, con el que se confrontan el discurso con el que se valida a diario la plantación de caña de azúcar y la propia lógica que está detrás del monocultivo de dicha gramínea. Se trata de un artículo de reflexión, anclado en las disquisiciones propias de la ecología política, en la búsqueda de encontrar consensos y provocar discusiones no solo alrededor de la nueva categoría nominativa para el cultivo de la caña de azúcar, sino sobre la sostenibilidad, alejada, por supuesto, de toda lógica de plantación, por los efectos conflictos socioambientales que de tiempo atrás viene provocando dicho cultivo y sus prácticas industrializadas.

Se prepararon películas de diferentes concentraciones de glicerol/almidón (G/S) y se caracterizaron a través de espectroscopía de impedancia (IS), calorimetría diferencia de barrido (DSC) y termogravimetría (TGA). La conductividad dc de las películas incrementó con el incremento en el contenido de glicerol y la temperatura. La dependencia de la conductividad con la frecuencia mostró un comportamiento de ley de potencia a altas frecuencias para todas las películas, similar al que se observa en otros conductores iónicos sólidos, el cual es conocido como "respuesta universal." El incremento en la conductividad eléctrica es consistente con el aumento en grupos -OH a medida que se incrementa el contenido de glicerol y la temperatura. Para todas las concentraciones, y bajo las condiciones de las medidas eléctricas, se observó una fase estable hasta aproximadamente 100 °C; la estabilidad se mantiene hasta temperaturas del orden de 150 °C a concentraciones de glicerol por debajo de G/S = 0.4.

La investigación es el primer análisis crítico comparativo del tratamiento periodístico dado al Plan Colombia por seis medios masivos escritos colombianos. Su ámbito abarca: Contexto colombiano y Plan Colombia; Análisis del discurso más mediático y caracterización de los medios analizados; Lo periodístico-noticioso; El padrón informativo. Los medios impresos analizados nunca publicaron el Plan Colombia pese a ser un tema de gran impacto (Autocensura); las informaciones fueron poco claras; La mayoría de medios prefirieron fidelidad y respaldo al estado y al gobierno; no se contrastaron las fuentes y hubo dependencia de las fuentes oficiales; solo el dos por ciento hace análisis de la información. De estos los más profundos y críticos estuvieron centrados en trabajos periodísticos originados en la prensa norteamericana y reproducida por Colombia.

This study developed a freshness indicator based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a biohybrid (BH) of Laponite® and anthocyanins adhered to linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) using cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). LLDPE was treated with CAP for 0 to 300 s, which resulted in an increased surface energy, characterized by an important increase in its polar component up to 120 s of treatment, due to the formation of polar groups on the surface of LLDPE. No changes in mechanical properties and water vapor permeability of LLDPE were observed. LLDPE–PVA–BH films were more homogeneous if BH was added before the acidification of the film‐forming solution due to more negative zeta potential and lower particle size of BH in basic medium. Indicators made with BH were able to maintain color after 8 weeks of exposure to light, while those made with anthocyanin extract had fully degraded after 3 weeks. The freshness indicator's color changed from purple to blue and finally to green when exposed to ammonia hydroxide (30% NH3) and from purple to blue when exposed to a simulant liquid of spoiled meat (0.03% NH3). Similar color variance was observed when the indicator was applied to monitor shrimp freshness, changing from purple to blue when the shrimp pH reached pH 7.6. Thus, bilayer films of LLDPE–PVA and natural BH produced using CAP have potential food packaging applications. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
