A Leap into the Digital World: A Shared, Multimedia Project in German Language Acquisition. The German saying “jumping into cold water” means that you find yourself in a new situation with no forewarning. Being thrown into the digital universe by the pandemic was similar, but after taking the first few steps and looking for new ideas and useful tools, we discovered various interactive tools which made online lessons more creative. This article illustrates the design, planning and realization of a collective project in 2020 at the University of Bologna Language Centre, using the application Bookcreator. The proposed assignment is part of the traditional curriculum in A1 German courses: learning how to present oneself to others. Transferring the assignment from paper to an online context enriched the whole task and allowed the participants to use a combination of different media. This method stimulated digital storytelling, the narration by means of digital tools, and resulted in the creation of an e-book. This project shows that digital tools can be used not only to convey linguistic notions, but also to increase motivation, autonomy and creativity in experimenting with language.

After many decades of research, publications, and exchange of good practices, the debate about intercultural pedagogy, the importance of bilingual education and the promotion of existing multiculturalism in school classes remains topical in the public educational system in Greece. My ongoing research interest focuses on the inclusive education of students with migrant backgrounds, taking into account the foreign language lessons in public education in Greece, specifically the teaching of German as a second foreign language. The empirical part of the study took place in a public primary school in a Province of the city of Karditsa during the school year 2021/2022. A class of 18 students of the 6th Grade, where 7 of them were bilingual/multilingual with a migrant background, was under research during the second and third trimester in the German language lesson. The research work is based on the methodology of the Functional-Pragmatics language theory by Ehlich and Rehbein. The data analysis is in progress; however, questionnaires were given to all participant students, and interviews were conducted with all bilinguals parents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The educational escape room presents an innovative approach to teaching, with potential benefits such as facilitating learning, motivating students, and promoting the development of general and professional skills. However, due to its novelty in the realm of education, there is limited empirical research on this teaching activity. Our study aims to investigate the didactic possibilities of using the educational escape room to teach German language at the university level. We designed tasks that corresponded to the language skills of 19 first-year students and incorporated them into a German language course. During the 60-minute activity, we observed the participants and then conducted a survey consisting of 11 scaled items. Using the SPSS programme, we analysed the survey data. Our results show that the educational escape room has both positive and negative aspects. While participants rated the activity positively because they were able to process and review lesson material effectively and because collaborative learning was encouraged, some had difficulty focusing on tasks while learning together. Overall, we recommend the use of the escape game as a teaching tool at tertiary level, but at the same time we would like to emphasise that more research is needed to better understand its didactic significance and to mitigate the negative effects.

- Abstract
As part of the continued effort to advocate multilingual education, China has recently included German, French, and Spanish as subjects in secondary education. Secondary teachers teaching these languages other than English (LOTEs) may confront new challenges and opportunities, potentially making their professional lives emotionally intense. We therefore take teachers teaching German in Chinese secondary schools as examples and examine their emotions, including the emotion types and the reasons behind those emotions. Using a mixed method, the study surveyed 136 Chinese German teachers nationwide, and then conducted follow-up interviews with 20 participants. The study reveals that the Chinese German teachers experienced more positive emotions than negative ones. The positive emotions were mostly associated with positive interactions in their school settings, followed by their teacher knowledge, interests, and personality, while opportunities created by the development of the German subject constituted an additional factor. Implications for how to enhance LOTE teachers’ emotional experiences are discussed. FUNDING INFORMATION. This work was supported by the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities and the Funds of the Teaching Advisory Board for German majors under the Ministry of Education in China (21DYJJ06)., Como parte del esfuerzo continuo por promover la educación multilingüe, China ha incluido recientemente el alemán, el francés y el español como asignaturas en la educación secundaria.

This paper aims to assess the current position of German in Northern Ireland schools. Anecdotal evidence and recent research (Neil, Phipps, and Mallon 1999, 2000) prompted a study to determine if German really is in decline in Northern Ireland, why this might be the case, and what, if anything, can be done to secure the future of the language in schools, particularly in the context of the current curricular review, which contains potentially challenging proposals for German and languages in general.

Rad nudi uvid u važnu ulogu, specifičnosti i učinkovite metode učenja i poučavanja stranog jezika u ranoj dobi. This paper focuses on the comparison of methods for teaching and learning German language in Waldorf and regular primary schools in the Republic of Croatia. The theoretical part of the paper presents the pedagogical principles and didactic-methodical features of Waldorf schools, as well as the main characteristics of their foreign language teaching. The regular primary school system in the Republic of Croatia is also presented, along with the features and significance of German language teaching. The paper offers an insight into the important role, specificities, and effective methods for early foreign language learning. Prior to the empirical part of the paper, a comparison of goals, outcomes, and teaching content for German language in the first four grades was conducted between curricular documents of Waldorf and regular primary schools in the Republic of Croatia. In the empirical part of the paper, a qualitative research was conducted aimed at examining and comparing the methods, materials, and social forms of work used in German language teaching in Waldorf and regular primary schools. This research is based on non-participant observation, and the sample consists of eight classes in which German language teaching was conducted: four in Waldorf and four in regular schools.

Aim. In Turkey, in connection with the Bologna process, German is also taught in Turkish universities as an elective course. There is an important relationship between the selection of the subject in the elective German courses, detailed planning of the courses, and the implementation of the appropriate method. In this study, the subject of professions was planned for the elective German courses. The purpose of this study is the preparation, implementation and evaluation of a sample lesson to describe the selection of the subject of professions for the German course taught as an elective course in the universities. Concept and Methods. This study was conducted by qualitative research. The document research technique was used in the study (Yıldırım & Şimşek, 2008). During the 2018/2019 academic year, I taught about the subject of profession selection in my German courses. I prepared, implemented and evaluated the subject of professions according to the lesson planning model I had previously developed (Coşkun, 2018). I prepared the materials used in this course according to this model. Result and Conclusion. The success of the lesson planning model mentioned above was also observed in the activities conducted earlier. It was also seen that the students who attended German courses in connection with the Bologna process exerted efforts in establishing contact with the instructor and the students attending the class. It was observed that the participants introduced themselves, mentioned the field or the branch in the university where they were studying, and were interested to gain experience abroad in order to be successful in their professions. In addition to the subject discussed in the class, the method implemented in the lesson and the planning of the lesson according to the method, play an important role in the continuation of this interest. Therefore, effective lesson planning models and unique methods should be developed. Origin. Students from all the departments of the university may attend the elective German language classes opened in connection with the Bologna process. The condition for participation in the courses "German for Erasmus" and "German for Communication" which I teach, is to learn German at the A1 level. It is frequently observed that the participants speak German at different levels. The overseas experience of the participants, the quality of the German and other language education they had received from primary to high school and university play an important role in this. In the recent years, the number of participants from German and other foreign language speaking countries has increased. The students who had been in German-speaking countries under the Erasmus program participate in the German courses also to maintain their fluency in the German language. In order to execute the German courses effectively for different purposes, for different fields and participants coming from different countries and students with different levels of fluency, a suitable method should be developed. It is believed that this inter-disciplinary study will contribute to the active German courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The article shows how the topic of dictionaries can be dealt with in German language teaching and how this subject has the potential to acquaint learners with a descriptive and data-driven perspective on language. The project Denkwerk, realized as cooperation among the Institute for German Language, the University of Mannheim and two regional secondary schools, fostered the students' intellectual curiosity and their interest in discovering linguistic details. Using empirical methods like corpus analysis, pupils learned both how to write wiki-based dictionary articles on their own and how to publish them in the Denktionary, the dictionary of the project. Our contribution describes the didactic and organisational framework of the project, its aims and contents, its schedule of events, as well as the structure of dictionary articles in the Denktionary, and the observed advantages of such a wikibased system. - Abstract
This practice article examines the design, implementation and impacts of a collaborative German language learning (LL) field trip in the United States through the conceptual framework of LL and teaching beyond the classroom. We explore the affordances of semi-structured out-of-class experiences in supporting world language students’ target language proficiency while addressing the crucial
Communities goal area of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages World-Readiness standards. In addition to their effects on students, we consider the potential impacts of LL experiences beyond the classroom on schools and school administrations. Considerations for theory, research and practice are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Despite the use of modern textbooks and teaching materials in German language teaching, school and university students continue to have difficulty in applying their knowledge of the language and in understanding authentic language. Even after studying German at school for as long as eight years, students are frequently unable to apply their knowledge of the language in written and oral communication. One of the major problems and shortcomings of German language teaching is that learners of German, unlike learners of English, are not exposed to authentic language input, which is important for stimulating subconscious, and therefore more rapid and efficient, language acquisition. The aim of our research was to assess the effects of using authentic texts in German language teaching on students' writing skills and vocabulary knowledge. An experimental study was conducted at the Novi Sad Faculty of Philosophy in the period October 2014 - June 2015 among students of an elective A2 level German language course. The findings indicate that the use of authentic texts in teaching has positive effects both on writing skills and on vocabulary knowledge. The results obtained from the experimental student group suggest a need for greater use of authentic texts in German language teaching, with the aim of developing language competences as well as tolerance and openness towards the foreign and the different, which is not always possible when using textbook texts.

The need for people who know a foreign language has made language learning a necessity. While knowing a single foreign language was a great advantage in the past, it has become important to know at least two foreign languages in today's conditions. Learning German as a Second Foreign Language comes to the fore in our country for many reasons, especially the economic cooperation and cultural ties with Germany. The influence of German teachers in the learning-teaching process of the German language is indisputable. The qualified training of German teachers also depends on the quality of teacher training programs. For this reason, it is important to examine the German Teacher Training Programs and make the necessary evaluations. The aim of the research is to examine the developments related to the German Teacher training programs in the Republican Period, to make comparisons and evaluations between these programs. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to the research. Teacher Training Programs prepared and developed by the Ministry of National Education and the Council of Higher Education were examined, the reasons for the preparation of the programs were revealed, and the similarities and differences of each program in terms of course type, number of courses, number of course credits and number of course hours were determined. In addition, the differences in the courses in the programs in terms of field knowledge, vocational education and general culture were analysed and interpreted. In the framework of the findings obtained, conclusions and recommendations are given.

The thesis deals with the implementation of modern technologies and multimedia applications in the teaching of German as a foreign language. The first part of the thesis focuses on defining the theoretical background. Important concepts are introduced to better orientation in the problems of the thesis. Furthermore, the role of technology in society and also in teaching is described. At the same time, this section presents the theoretical findings on the use of modern technologies during the Covid-19 pandemic and a comparison of the frequency of their use before and after the pandemic, that is, at the present time. Finally, the advantages and pitfalls of using modern technologies in teaching are described. A list of multimedia applications that can be used in the teaching of German is also provided. In the next part of the thesis, which is based on quantitative research, we analyse the results of a questionnaire survey conducted with pupils and teachers of upper primary and lower secondary schools. The results show that pupils and teachers are generally positive about the use of modern technologies in teaching. In this study, it is aimed to compare the attitudes of Preparatory Class Students at German Language Teaching Programme towards German Classes regarding different variables.
