African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) was one of the main disease-related constraints to the development of intensive livestock production systems in the Niayes region of Senegal, a 30 km wide strip of land along the coast between Dakar and Saint-Louis. To overcome this constraint, the Government of Senegal initiated an area-wide integrated pest management programme combining chemical control tactics with the sterile insect technique to eradicate a population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis gambiensis Vanderplank, 1949 (Diptera, Glossinidae) in this area. The project was implemented following a phased conditional approach, and the target area was divided into three blocks treated sequentially. This study aims to assess the temporal dynamics of the prevalence of Trypanosoma spp. during the implementation of this programme. Between 2009 and 2022, 4,359 blood samples were collected from cattle and screened for trypanosomes using both the buffy coat and ELISA techniques, and PCR tests since 2020. The seroprevalence decreased from 18.9% (95%CI: 11.2–26.5) in 2009 to 0% in 2017–2022 in block 1, and from 92.9% (95%CI: 88.2–97) in 2010 to 0% in 2021 in block 2. The parasitological and serological data confirm the entomological monitoring results, i.e., that there is a high probability that the population of G. p. gambiensis has been eradicated from the Niayes and that the transmission of AAT has been interrupted in the treated area. These results indicate the effectiveness of the adopted approach and show that AAT can be sustainably removed through the creation of a zone free of G. p. gambiensis.

Phytophagous and beneficial arthropods were inventoried on three traditional aromatic plants, lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), basil (Ocimum basilicum), and chives (Allium fistulosum), cropped in separate plots in a field experiment in the Caribbean island of Martinique. The same inventory was made on tomato plots, as a culture of association. Arthropods were collected using D-vac suction and Pitfall traps. Our results showed that hemipterans and dipterans dominated in D-vac suction samples with a high abundance of hemipterans on basil and of dipterans on tomato. Pitfall trap sampling revealed a high abundance of ants (mainly of the genus Pheidole) on all four crops. Aromatic plants had a significant positive effect on the abundance of both phytophagous and beneficial arthropods, while arthropod composition varied almost not at all between plant species. The Shannon index of basil and lemongrass were the highest. Aromatic plants may be used to increase population of beneficials in horticultural crops.

Controlling pest populations in cotton fields is crucial to reduce yield losses due to plant damage. However, knowing the economic, environmental and agronomical issues related to the systematic use of chemical insecticides, it is urgently needed to better assist spraying decisions based on the development of an Early Warning System. In Benin, one of the major cotton producers in West Africa, a comprehensive annual monitoring of the incidence of key pests has been implemented for more than ten years. Here, we propose to use these long-term and multilocal observational data to (1) better understand the relationships between environmental variables, including climate, landscape context, but also crop management, and intra- or inter-annual pest population dynamics within the cotton-growing area, and to (2) better predict the risk of yield loss due to key pests as to better target interventions. As a perspective, we suggest developing standardized data collection and management throughout the West-African cotton-growing area for areawide pest management.

BACKGROUND: Cosmopolites sordidus is one of the most damaging pests of banana worldwide. To date, most studies have addressed the control of this pest at the plot level, without considering the landscape scale, whereas between plots dispersion could be important. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of C. sordidus to cross contrasted field interfaces. The 10 following interfaces were investigated: forests, hedgerows, field tracks, grassy areas, finely and coarsely tilled soil zones, ditches with and without water, vegetable gardening zones, and pheromone trap lines. Individually marked weevils were released on one side of the interface and recovered daily on the other side, allowing the estimation of the velocity and the crossing success of C. sordidus for each interface. RESULTS: Highest permeabilities (with a crossing success above 70%) were obtained for vegetable gardening zones, finely tilled soil zones, forests, and coarsely tilled soil zones. Intermediate permeabilities were measured for hedgerows, field tracks, grassy areas, and ditches without water. Only the line of pheromone traps and submerged ditches had a strong barrier effect on C. sordidus, with a crossing success below 12%. Wind strength, percentage of sky, and vegetation height were negatively correlated to the C. sordidus crossing success. CONCLUSION: Overall, our results showed that only ditches with water and lines of pheromone traps were efficient in stopping the dispersal of C. sordidus. The next step will be to conduct research to incorporate the use of these two interfaces at farm and landscape scale into integrated pest management strategies.

African animal trypanosomoses are vector-borne diseases that cause enormous livestock losses in sub-Saharan Africa, with drastic socio-economic impacts. Vector control in the context of an area-wide integrated pest management program with a sterile insect technique component requires the production of high-quality sterile male tsetse flies. In our study, we evaluated the effect of irradiation on the fecundity of Glossina palpalis gambiensis to identify the optimal dose that will induce maximum sterility while maintaining biological performance as much as possible. In addition, male mating performance was evaluated in semi-field cages. The irradiation doses used were 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 Gy, and untreated males were used as the control. The results showed that pupal production and emergence rates were higher in batches of females that had mated with fertile males than in those that had mated with irradiated males with any experimental dose. A dose of 120 Gy administered to male flies induced 97–99% sterility after mating with virgin females. For the semi-field cage experiments, males irradiated with 120 Gy showed good sexual competitiveness as compared to fertile males and those irradiated with 140 Gy, considering the level of filling of spermatheca and the number of pairs formed. The optimal radiation dose of 120 Gy found in this study is slightly different from the traditional dose of 110 Gy that has been used in several eradication programmes in the past. The potential reasons for this difference are discussed, and an argument is made for the inclusion of reliable dosimetry systems in these types of studies.

Can farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) boost crop yields and improve food availability without using more mineral fertilizer? This question has been at the center of lively debates among the civil society, policy-makers, and in academic editorials. Proponents of the “yes” answer have put forward the “input reduction” principle of agroecology, i.e. by relying on agrobiodiversity, recycling and better efficiency, agroecological practices such as the use of legumes and manure can increase crop productivity without the need for more mineral fertilizer. We reviewed decades of scientific literature on nutrient balances in SSA, biological nitrogen fixation of tropical legumes, manure production and use in smallholder farming systems, and the environmental impact of mineral fertilizer. Our analyses show that more mineral fertilizer is needed in SSA for five reasons: (i) the starting point in SSA is that agricultural production is “agroecological” by default, that is, very low mineral fertilizer use, widespread mixed crop-livestock systems and large crop diversity including legumes, but leading to poor soil fertility as a result of widespread soil nutrient mining, (ii) the nitrogen needs of crops cannot be adequately met solely through biological nitrogen fixation by legumes and recycling of animal manure, (iii) other nutrients like phosphorus and potassium need to be replaced continuously, (iv) mineral fertilizers, if used appropriately, cause little harm to the environment, and (v) reducing the use of mineral fertilizers would hamper productivity gains and contribute indirectly to agricultural expansion and to deforestation. Yet, the agroecological principles directly related to soil fertility—recycling, efficiency, diversity—remain key in improving soil health and nutrient-use efficiency, and are critical to sustaining crop productivity in the long run. Rabies is endemic in Madagascar and a neglected disease. The aim of this study was to summarize human and animal rabies surveillance activities in Madagascar from 2011 to 2021. Samples from terrestrial mammals and humans were tested for rabies virus infection using direct fluorescent antibody, RT-PCR and virus isolation by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for rabies at the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar. Among 964 animal and 47 human samples tested, 66.7 and 70.2% were positive, respectively. The NRL received these suspect rabies samples from 48 of 114 districts of Madagascar. Most of them were submitted from the district of the capital city Antananarivo (26.3%) and mainly from its region Analamanga (68.9%). Animal samples were mainly from dogs (83%), cats (9.5%) and cattle (5.8%). Pigs, lemurs, goats accounted for less than 1%. During the 11 years of surveillance, 48 human skin and/or brain biopsy samples were received from 20 districts, mainly from Antananarivo and its surroundings (N = 13), Toamasina and its surroundings (N = 8) and Moramanga (N = 6). The high positivity rate for all species and the non-homogeneous spatial distribution of samples suggests substantial underreporting of rabies cases. There is a clear need to better understand the reasons for underreporting and prioritize rabies surveillance, prevention and control in Madagascar, with improvements in budget, education and infrastructure. A joint animal and human health rabies control program including vaccination of at least 70% of the dog population, is needed to achieve the goal of eliminating dog-transmitted human rabies by 2030 from Madagascar.

The biological quality of sterile male insects produced in a mass-rearing facility is a prerequisite for the success of the SIT, which is a component of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM). Indeed, sterile male insects released in the field must have a good mating performance in order to compete with wild males, but they must also present the required level of sterility. In the present study, the biological quality of sterile male Glossina palpalis gambiensis produced in a mass-rearing insectary was assessed through quality control testing. The mating performance of irradiated males was assessed in walk-in field cages. Irradiation had no effect on adult emergence but significantly reduced the percentage of operational flies (from 89.58% to 79.87%) and male survival (from 5 to 4 days, on average). However, irradiation did not impact the sterile male insemination potential, with all females inseminated and more than 80% of the spermathecae completely filled. The rate of induced sterility in females was 89.67% due to a dose rate decrease of the radiation source. Moreover, sterile males were able to compete successfully with untreated fertile males for untreated females in walk-in field cages. This study confirmed that the flies were still competitive and stressed the importance of regularly checking the radiation source parameters.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) provides an illustration of how crop protection has (or has not) evolved over the past six decades. Throughout this period, IPM has endeavored to promote sustainable forms of agriculture, pursued sharp reductions in synthetic pesticide use, and thereby resolved myriad socio-economic, environmental, and human health challenges. Global pesticide use has, however, largely continued unabated, with negative implications for farmer livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and the human right to food. In this review, we examine how IPM has developed over time and assess whether this concept remains suited to present-day challenges. We believe that despite many good intentions, hard realities need to be faced. 1) We identify the following major weaknesses: i) a multitude of IPM definitions that generate unnecessary confusion; ii) inconsistencies between IPM concepts, practice, and policies; iii) insufficient engagement of farmers in IPM technology development and frequent lack of basic understanding of its underlying ecological concepts. 2) By diverting from the fundamental IPM principles, integration of practices has proceeded along serendipitous routes, proven ineffective, and yielded unacceptable outcomes. 3) We show that in the majority of cases, chemical control still remains the basis of plant health programs. 4) Furthermore, IPM research is often lagging, tends to be misguided, and pays insufficient attention to ecology and to the ecological functioning of agroecosystems. 5) Since the 1960s, IPM rules have been twisted, its foundational concepts have degraded and its serious (farm-level) implementation has not advanced. To remedy this, we are proposing Agroecological Crop Protection as a concept that captures how agroecology can be optimally put to the service of crop protection. Agroecological Crop Protection constitutes an interdisciplinary scientific field that comprises an orderly strategy (and clear prioritization) of practices at

Geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial modelling are crucial for designing, implementing, and optimizing area-wide programmes of insect and/or disease control. This chapter provides a basic introduction to the science of GIS, Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite remote sensing (RS), and spatial modelling, and reviews the principal ways in which these technologies can be used to assist various stages of development of the sterile insect technique (SIT) as part of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programmes — from the selection of project sites, and feasibility assessments and planning of pre-intervention surveys, to the monitoring and analysis of insect suppression programmes, and the release of sterile insects. Potential barriers to the successful deployment of GIS tools are also discussed.

Suppression or eradication of insect pest populations by the release of sterile insects is often dependent on supplementary methods of pest reduction to levels where the target pest population can be overflooded with sterile insects. Population suppression activities often take place in advance of, or coincide with, the production and release of sterile insects. Supplementary methods to remove breeding opportunities, or management methods that prevent access of pests or vectors to the hosts, may reduce the population or prevent damage or disease transmission. Insecticides have been used widely in direct applications or applied as baits, in traps, or on specific sites where the pest makes contact or reproduces, although they are increasingly being replaced by biopesticides. As sterile insect release does not kill the pest, adult biting pests or fertile mated females of the pests will continue to attack hosts after the release of sterile insects. Thus supplementary pest suppression programmes and quarantine measures are essential to prevent damage or the spread of disease. Eradication or effective pest management requires that the entire population of the pest be treated, or that the programme apply immigration barriers. It also requires taking into account interactions among control methods; they can be additive, synergistic or antagonistic. When supplementary pest control activities directly benefit the human population in areas being treated, such as in mosquito or screwworm control programmes, these area-wide suppression activities are usually acceptable to the public, but when the public receives no direct benefit from supplementary control activities such as in crop pest programmes, social resistance may develop unless public information is managed properly.

Advances in viral metagenomics have paved the way of virus discovery by making the exploration of viruses in any ecosystem possible. Applied to agroecosystems, such an approach opens new possibilities to explore how viruses circulate between insects and plants, which may help to optimise their management. It could also lead to identifying novel entomopathogenic viral resources potentially suitable for biocontrol strategies. We sampled the larvae of a natural population of alfalfa weevils (Hypera postica), a major herbivorous pest feeding on legumes, and its host plant alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Insect and plant samples were collected from a crop field and an adjacent meadow. We characterised the diversity and abundance of viruses associated with weevils and alfalfa, and described nine putative new virus species, including four associated with alfalfa and five with weevils. In addition, we found that trophic accumulation may result in a higher diversity of plant viruses in phytophagous pests compared to host plants.

In urban and peri-urban areas in West Africa, the cabbage Brassica oleracea L. (Brassicaceae) is protected using repeated high doses of synthetic insecticides. After a brief description of available IPM components, this paper presents a literature review focused on the botanical extracts that have been experimented with at the laboratory or in the field in West Africa against major cabbage pests. The literature reviewed mentions 19 plant species from 12 families used for cabbage protection in the subregion. The species most used are Azadirachta indica, Capsicum frutescens, Ocimum gratissimum and Ricinus communis. An overview of the world literature showed that a total of 13 plant species belonging to 8 families used to control cabbage pests are reported from the rest of Africa, and 140 plant species belonging to 43 families from the rest of the world. The most commonly used and tested plant species against insect pests in the three geographical areas considered is A. indica.

The invasive fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis poses a major threat to the production and trade of mango in sub-Saharan Africa. Farmers devise different innovations to manage the pest in an attempt to minimize yield loss and production costs while maximizing revenues. Using survey data obtained from Embu County, Kenya, we analyzed farmers' knowledge and perception as regards the invasive fruit fly, their innovations for the management of the pest, and the determinants of their adoption and dis-adoption decisions of recently developed and promoted integrated pest management (IPM) technologies for suppression of the pest. The results show that farmers consider fruit flies as a major threat to mango production (99%) and primarily depend on pesticides (90%) for the management of the pest. Some farmers (35%) however use indigenous methods to manage the pest. Though farmers possess good knowledge of different IPM strategies, uptake is relatively low. The regression estimates show that continued use of IPM is positively associated with the gender and education of the household head, size of a mango orchard, knowledge on mango pests, training, contact with an extension officer, and use of at least one non-pesticide practice for fruit fly management, while IPM dis-adoption was negatively correlated with the size of the mango orchard, practice score and use of indigenous innovations for fruit fly management. We recommend enhancing farmer′s knowledge through increased access to training programs and extension services for enhanced adoption of sustainable management practices for B. dorsalis.

It has been suggested that increasing plant species diversity (PSD) in agroecosystems at different spatiotemporal scales reduces the impacts of crop pests and diseases as well as the dependence on synthetic plant protection products. This principle was applied to a range of tropical case studies. These studies involved various pests and pathogens with contrasting life history traits, different cropping systems (a cereal crop in conservation agriculture, vegetable crops in rotational and trap cropping systems, perennial crops in agroforestry) and various spatial scales of PSD deployment (field and farmscape). Here we review the outcomes of these studies, and discuss the lessons learned regarding synergies and tradeoffs associated with regulation effects provided by PSD. The major points are: 1) results contributed to solve local crop pest and disease problems such as bacterial wilt on tomato in Martinique, scarab beetles and witchweed on upland rice in Madagascar, fruitworms on tomato in Martinique and okra in Niger, fruit flies on cucurbit vegetables in Reunion, mirid bugs and black pod rot on cocoa in Cameroon, berry borer and leaf rust on coffee in Costa Rica; 2) the importance of cross-cutting issues regarding green manure, cover crops or companion plants across case studies at the field scale involving below-ground and aerial processes, were highlighted, particularly that of the within-species genetic variation of these plants; 3) based on the fruitworm/tomato case study, a dynamic and spatially-explicit individual-based model was developed as a generic tool to improve understanding of system functioning by assessing infestation patterns in response to main crop/trap crop relative attractiveness, spatiotemporal deployment of the main crop/trap crop and insect behavioral traits; 4) tradeoffs were highlighted regarding pest and disease complex management, single-option pest and disease control via several pathways based on a single PSD-deployment measure and other

Aphids cause considerable damage to numerous crops all over the world and insecticides are the main means of controlling them, despite their detrimental impacts on human and environmental health. This study assessed the effectiveness of the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a mixture of predatory ladybird beetles, Hippodamia variegata Goeze, Chilocorus calvus Chiccl, and Cheilomenes propinqua Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and an entomopathogenic strain of Aspergillus flavus Link (Eurotiales: Trichocomaceae), collected locally in Tanzania, to control Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae). After assessing the predation and parasitism rates of these natural enemies at different aphid densities in laboratory experiments, their ability to control aphids on kalanchoe was assessed in a greenhouse experiment over two seasons. The largest number of A. fabae parasitized or consumed in the laboratory was found at a density of 160 aphids per predator, or parasitoid. At that density, an adult female of A. colemani parasitized 114 A. fabae per day, on average, and adults of C. calvus, H. variegata, and C. propinqua consumed 75, 72, and 85 aphids per day, respectively. A. flavus spores applied at 1 × 107 spores ml−1 reduced the aphid population by 7.9 and 12.6 times within 10 days in the first and second seasons of the greenhouse experiments, respectively, as opposed to 2.8 and 2.5 times by releasing a mixture of the ladybirds at a rate of 5 adults/m2, and by 3.3 and 9.5 times by releasing A. colemani at a rate of 2 adults/m2. This study confirmed the potential of these locally collected bio-control agents for controlling A. fabae. However, use of the isolated A. flavus strain was undermined by its production of aflatoxin. Further research is therefore required to tap into the potential of a non-toxic strain of A. flavus and/or other entomopathogenic fungi.

In Martinique or La Réunion, French authorities recently banned the use of pesticides for the management of “soil-borne pathogens” on pineapple after several decades of intensive monoculture where the natural balance between beneficial and harmful communities of soil organisms has disappeared. Today, increasing infestation of pineapple by the nematode R. reniformis and other “soil-borne pathogens” causes severe damage to the crop. New cropping systems with innovative ecological nematode management are needed. An eco-friendly cropping system, which comprised rotation of sunn hemp (C. juncea), pineapple, a natural grass fallow and another cash crop, eggplant, consistently reduced the inoculum of nematodes. Nematode populations were reduced by 86.4%, 82% and 46.5% respectively under pineapple, sunn hemp and grass fallow compared to infestations of eggplant (3456 nematodes .100g-1 of soil) after several rotations. Integrating a chemical induction of systemic resistance or application of an endophytic bacteria recovered from pineapple roots, Bacillus sp. GVS2, helped maintain low populations of nematodes during the vegetative cycle. On two pineapple varieties, MD2 and Victoria (Queen), two different treatments were applied monthly in the field, methyl jasmonate (10−4 M, 10 ml per plant), or a suspension of Bacillus sp. GVS2 (108 CFU ml−1, 10 ml per plant) isolated from pineapple roots. After eight months, the nematode populations were reduced respectively on MD2 and Victoria (Queen) by 58.3% and 50.3% with the methyl jasmonate and by 59.6% and 54.3% with the Bacillus sp. GVS2 compared to controls. Because of the efficiency of sunn hemp in reducing the inoculum of nematodes, no significant differences in vegetative growth were observed using the D leaf weight and the estimated root length densities (RLD). The potential of pest management through eco-friendly cropping systems for pineapple with a biocontrol for nematodes with no pesticide is discussed.

The global burden of vector-borne diseases continues to grow year on year. Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes lead to more than 700,000 deaths each year, with malaria alone accounting for almost half a million of the total deaths. Such statistics underline the urgency for alternative complementary control measures. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is one of several genetic control measures routinely used throughout the world to suppress, contain or eradicate various species of agricultural, veterinary or human insect pests. SIT is a technique which has proved successful and sustainable, particularly when deployed as part of an area-wide integrated pest management programme (AW-IPM). A build-up of insecticide resistance coupled with the global spread of species such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus has reignited interest in developing mosquito SIT as part of an AW-IPM approach. Significant progress has been made in the last decade towards taking mosquito SIT to the operational level, however, distinct gaps still remain in the literature, especially regarding the post-pupal irradiation stages. The aim of this research thesis was to address some of the key issues where information was lacking, specifically the handling, transport and release of sterile male mosquitoes. The impact of immobilisation temperature and duration on male mosquito survival was investigated in Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Anopheles arabiensis, in order to determine a suitable storage and transportation temperature range when conducting releases of sterile male mosquitoes. The effect of compaction during storage was investigated and a maximum tolerable threshold determined. A standardised method to mark male mosquitoes for a small-scale field release was developed and verified in Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Anopheles arabiensis. Tsetse eradication continues to be a top priority for African governments including that of Senegal, which embarked on a project to eliminate Glossina palpalis gambiensis from the Niayes area, following an area-wide integrated pest management approach with an SIT component. A successful SIT programme requires competitive sterile males of high biological quality. This may be hampered by handling processes including irradiation and the release mechanisms, necessitating continued improvement of these processes, to maintain the quality of flies. A new prototype of an automated chilled adult release system (Bruno Spreader Innovation, (BSI™)) for tsetse flies was tested for its accuracy (in counting) and release rate consistency. Also, its impact on the quality of the released sterile males was evaluated on performance indicators, including flight propensity, mating competitiveness, premating and mating duration, insemination rate of mated females and survival of male flies. The BSITM release system accurately counted and homogenously released flies at the lowest motor speed set (0.6 rpm), at a consistent rate of 60±9.58 males/min. Also, the release process, chilling (6 ± 1°C) and passing of flies through the machine) had no significant negative impact on the male flight propensity, mating competitiveness, premating and mating durations and the insemination rates. Only the survival of flies was negatively affected whether under feeding or starvation. The positive results of this study show that the BSI™ release system is promising for use in future tsetse SIT programmes. However, the negative impact of the release process on survival of flies needs to be addressed in future studies and results of this study confirmed under operational field conditions in West Africa.

Coconut trees of the cv. Green Dwarf of Jiqui in Bahia, northeastern Brazil, that displayed hartrot symptoms were cut and inspected for the presence of insect vectors in the leaf axils. Eggs, nymphs and adults of Lincus lobuliger Breddin (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), vector of the protozoan causing hartrot, were collected together with an abundance of adults of the predatory beetle Hololepta (Leionata) quadridentada (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Histeridae). In the field, both were placed in a plastic container for transport, and the predation of L. lobuliger eggs by the histerid was observed. The predation was subsequently confirmed under controlled laboratory conditions. Here, we report for the first time H. quadridentada preying on L. lobuliger eggs, suggesting that the histerid contributes to the natural biological control of this vector. Moreover, our results could contribute to the development of biologically sound control strategies against L. lobuliger or other Lincus species.

The sterile insect technique is an environment friendly control tactic and is very species specific. It is not a stand-alone technique and has been used mostly in combination with other control tactics within an area-wide integrated pest management strategy. For a period of eight years, the direct impact of a campaign to eradicate a population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis gambiensis in Senegal was monitored using a set of fruit-feeding insect species (Cetoniinae and Nymphalidae) that served as ecological indicators of the health of the ecosystem. Here we show that the eradication campaign had very limited impacts on the apparent densities of the most frequent species as well as three diversity indexes during the reduction phase involving insecticides but reverted to pre-intervention levels as soon as the release of the sterile male insects started. These results greatly expand our understanding of the impact of vector eradication campaigns on non-target species.

L'étude de l'influence des pratiques agricoles et du contexte paysager sur les populations de bioagresseurs et de leurs ennemis naturels est une étape essentielle à la conception de systèmes de culture minimisant I 'usage des produits phytosanitaires et optimisant les régulations biologiques. L'objectif principal de ce travail est d'analyser et de comprendre l'influence des pratiques agricoles et des habitats semi-naturels sur les attaques de l'espèce Heliocheilus albipunctella, l'un des principaux insectes ravageurs du mil en Afrique de l'ouest et plus particulièrement sur sa régulation naturelle via ses principaux parasitoïdes que sont Bracon hebetor Say et Trichogrammatoiaea armigera. Pour se faire un réseau de 90 parcelles de mil dans la zone de Bambey (20*20 km) au Sénégal a été suivi en 2013 et 2014. Dans notre approche exploratoire multi-échelle, nous avons d'abord mis en évidence que la régulation naturelle de la mineuse de l'épi du mil (MEM) étaient à la fois corrélées a certaines pratiques culturales et a des contextes paysagers spécifiques. A l'échelle locale (250 m), nous constatons que la régulation naturelle de la MEM est plus forte dans les champs de case à proximité des villages et lorsque les parcelles de mil sont concentrées et contiguës. A une échelle plus large (1710 m), nous observons une forte influence de la densité d'arbres et de l'hétérogénéité du paysage. Ces résultats indiquent que la végétation semi-naturelle, ici principalement des arbres, doit être maintenue pour renforcer le contrôle biologique de H albipunctella. Des recherches supplémentaires ont ensuite été réalisées à l'échelle des espèces arborées, afin de mieux comprendre les relations entre les espèces et le niveau de régulation de la MEM. The African stalk borer Eldana saccharina is an endemic pest of high economic importance in sub-Saharan Africa which often causes heavy infestations in rainfed plant cane subjected to a cycle of 15-17 months. The present study aimed to reduce overall damage due to this borer by early harvesting of sugarcane at three different periods. It involved two experiments carried out in Ferké 1 and Ferké 2 sugar estates over 17 months in rainfed plant cane, following a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four different treatments. Treatments were composed of three harvesting periods (T1: November 15, T2: December 15, and T3: January 15), and a control (T0, no harvest), all in 4 replicates. The Ferké 1 experiment was planted with the variety N21 on 25/07/2017 and harvested on 23/06/2019. That of Ferké 2 was planted on 15/06/2017 with the variety M2592/93 and harvested on 05/12/2018. The study showed that variety N21 with high fiber content was more tolerant to stem borer than variety M2593/92 credited with a moderate fiber content. Stem borer infestations were significantly reduced across crop cycle following early harvesting on M2593/92, as opposed to N21. Without early harvesting, M2593/92 was much more infested than N21, with respectively 24 and 10% of internodes bored. Data showed that early harvesting in rainfed plant cane could be beneficial in the prevention of heavy infestations due to E saccharina.
