Abstract

We consider the problem of finding nonzero eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of a matrix $AA^{\top}$, where $A$ is a special incidence matrix; This matrix can equivalently be defined based on a match relation between some sequences. By using a concrete description of the obtained eigenvectors, we show that these are pairwise orthogonal and satisfy nice properties. The combinatorial arguments, in the sequel, lead us to obtain formulas for entries of matrices $W$ and $WA$, where $W$ is the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse of $A$. A special case of this problem has previously found applications in computational biology. ., Comment: 37 pages

Abstract

Treatment of naphtho-9-crown-3 ether with Fe[Cl.sub.3] and aqueous [H.sub.2]S[O.sub.4] generates bis-naphtho-9-crown-3 ether in ca. 30% yield. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic [P2.sub.1]/n space group; a = 9.2004(9), b = 18.0868(17), and c = 13.2078(13) [Angstrom], [beta] = 97.799(2)[degrees] and Z = 4. [sup.1]H and [sup.13]C NMR data have been obtained in solution, and the solid-state [sup.13]C NMR spectrum is included for comparison. A chemical shift range of ca. 12 ppm has been found for the oxygenated aliphatic carbons in the solid state, in contrast to the 3 ppm range in the solution [sup.13]C NMR spectrum. These results are discussed in terms of the torsional environments of the carbon sites in the crystal structure. Key words: crown ether, stereochemistry, oxidative dimerization.

Abstract

Objective: Biopure® MTAD (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, USA) has been developed as a final irrigant following root canal shaping to remove intracanal smear layer. Many of the unique properties of MTAD potentially transfer to the conditioning process of tooth roots during periodontal therapy. The aim of this ex vivo study was to evaluate the effect of MTAD on the removal of smear layer from root surfaces. Materials and Methods: Thirty two longitudinally sectioned specimens from 16 freshly extracted teeth diagnosed with advanced periodontal disease were divided into four groups. In group 1 and 2, the root surfaces were scaled using Gracey curettes. In group 3 and 4, 0.5 mm of the root surface was removed using a fissure bur. The specimens in group 1 and 3 were then irrigated by normal saline. The specimens in groups 2 and 4 were irrigated with Biopure MTAD. All specimens were prepared for SEM and scored according to the presence of smear layer. Results: MTAD significantly increased (P=0.001) the smear layer removal in both groups 2 and 4 compared to the associated control groups, in which only saline was used. Conclusion: MTAD increased the removal of the smear layer from periodontally affected root surfaces. Use of MTAD as a periodontal conditioner may be suggested.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between social constraints (difficulties in talking with significant others about diabetes-related issues) and self-care activities in managing diabetes. Participants were 82 individuals who self-identified as having diabetes. Results from an online survey indicated that higher social constraints were associated with lower adherence to certain self-care activities (general diet and exercise). These relationships were mediated by lower self-efficacy to perform diabetes self-care activities and by higher negative mood states. Social constraints were also associated with increased thought intrusions associated with diabetes via the mediating mechanism of anxiety. Body Mass Index (BMI) also moderated the effects of social constraints on self-care activities. Among individuals with low, compared to high BMI scores, social constraints were negatively related to self-care activities. Abstract

This experimental study examined social comparison activity among individuals with diabetes, focusing on how they react to information that other people are functioning well or poorly with their own diabetes prognosis and psychological adjustment. Based on a 3 × 3 factorial design, individuals with diabetes (n = 108) read one of nine interviews about another person whose diabetes prognosis and psychological adjustment were described as good, poor, or unspecified. Ratings were obtained on participants' desire to seek information and affiliate with the target as well as on evaluations of their own physical and psychological coping. Results indicated that individuals desired more emotional support from someone who was well adjusted than poorly adjusted in coping with diabetes, and they avoided seeking information from someone who was doing poorly psychologically.
