Purpose: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a heterogeneous spectrum of liver diseases that encompass simple steatosis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease with multiple causal factors that presents a complex interaction between the microbial biofilm and the host's immune response. The aim of this study was to investigate the concentrations of Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 (VAP-1) and Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) in patients with coexisting periodontitis and NAFLD. Patients and Methods: This study included 48 patients, who were dental and periodontal assessed. Of these patients, 25 were diagnosed with NAFLD. After performing the periodontal clinical examination, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were collected. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) dedicated kits tests were used for the detection and quantitative determination of VAP-1 and TSP-1 in GCF samples. Statistical methods were applied for the comparison and correlation of data. Results: VAP-1 and TSP-1 levels showed significant differences between all test and control groups (p< 0.0001). Statistically significant correlations (p< 0.05) between VAP-1 and periodontal and liver parameters were found in patients with NAFLD and periodontitis. Conclusion: Periodontal inflammation is more marked in patients with periodontitis-NAFLD association. Vascular adhesion and angiogenesis could be affected in patients with periodontitis and NAFLD. These findings could suggest that addressing periodontal inflammation in individuals with the periodontitis-NAFLD association may have a broader impact on vascular adhesion and angiogenesis, highlighting the interplay between oral health and liver conditions for comprehensive patient care. The research presented in this retrospective study aimed to investigate the prevalence of periodontal diseases within a population and explore potential demographic and clinical variations among patients diagnosed with periodontitis. The study involved the analysis of 104 patient records from the Periodontology Clinic at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova, collected between 2018 and 2019. Utilizing the 2018 classification algorithm for periodontal diseases, patients were categorized into three groups: a control group without periodontal issues (Group H), a gingivitis group (Group G), and a periodontitis group (Group P). The collected data encompassed demographic information, oral hygiene indicators, and clinical parameters. Statistical analysis and graphical representation revealed notable trends, such as the higher prevalence of periodontitis (51%) compared to gingivitis (14%), with 35% of participants showing no signs of periodontal involvement. Detailed group analyses highlighted specific patterns, including a substantial male predominance among patients without periodontal issues and varying distributions of periodontal stages based on gender. Additionally, the study explored age-related variations, revealing an increasing average age from the control group (33.04 years) to the gingivitis group (34.86 years) and a significant rise in the periodontitis group (45.49 years). The findings underscore the importance of early detection and intervention in periodontal diseases and provide valuable insights for clinicians in tailoring individualized diagnostic and treatment approaches. Metal-ceramic crowns (MC) have long been considered as gold standard for dental prosthetic restorations. Our study aims to evaluate the influence of MC, with conventional technology used for the framework, on the periodontal parameters and levels of C reactive protein, an inflammatory marker, in gingival crevicular fluid in patients diagnosed with periodontitis. Two groups were established: the test group T-28 teeth from the lateral area wearing a MC crown and the control group C-28 teeth without any wearing. These parameters were evaluated: probing depth, Gingival Index, and longevity of crowns. The quantitative assessment through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of the targeted pro-inflammatory mediator was performed. There is a difference statistically significant between the groups T and C regarding the marker's levels and gingival index, a very strong correlation between these levels and probing depth and a strong correlation between longevity and Gingival Index. Periodontal clinical parameters are more pronounced the longer the time elapsed since the application of the crowns. Expression of C reactive protein is higher in the presence of MC crowns. The objective of the cross-sectional study was to assess periodontal and implant health condition among individuals diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome (SS), taking into account the clinical circumstances associated with this patient population. The clinical parameters employed to evaluate the periodontal status of both natural teeth and implants included: periodontal probing depth (PPD) measured at six sites per tooth/implant, clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing index (BOP), plaque index (PLQ). Gingival crevicular fluid samples were collected for interleukin-16 level evaluation. After clinical and immunological assessment of the study and control groups, the data was centralized, compiled and submitted for statistical analysis. In all four types of assessed periodontal parameters, there were statistically significant differences between the SS patients with no dental implants and the other test (SSi) and control groups (Cni and Ci). Nevertheless, in SS patients with dental implants, plaque levels were similar to that of controls. In addition, other periodontal parameters (PPD, BOP and CAL) were similar in SS patients with dental implants and controls, with no statistically significant difference. The highest GCF IL-6 levels were found in SS patients with no dental implants, the differences to the other study and control groups being statistically significant. In patients with SS and dental implants, there were no statistically significant differences to the other groups. Individuals diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome (SS) exhibit a less favorable periodontal condition compared to controls without SS. Notably, SS patients who undergo dental implant procedures demonstrate an improvement in their periodontal status. This highlights the importance of proactive and ongoing dental and periodontal surveillance for SS patients, aiming to decrease the risk of developing periodontal diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regarding the influence of obesity on general health of children, scientific literature showed the importance of early management of children's overweight. In terms of oral health, overweight and obese children were shown to have accelerated dental development and increased prevalence of caries. Objectives. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the influence of Body Mass Index (BMI) and dietary behaviors on the oral status, eruptions and hygiene in children. Material and Methods. Ninety-two children aged 6-12 years were investigated about the oral hygiene habits, nutritional related behaviors, presence of systemic diseases. Values of BMI and oral status were noted. Statistical analysis was performed. Results. Significant moderate correlations between the values of BMI with tooth eruption and weak but significantly with dental lesions were determined. The study assessed whether the increased production of interleukin-1α (IL-1α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), as a result of chronic hepatic inflammation, could be the expression of the negative impact on periodontal disease. The study included chronic periodontitis patients who were systemically healthy, chronic periodontitis patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C, as well as control patients, being systemically and periodontally healthy. After periodontal examination and the assessment of certain periodontal parameters, gingival crevicular fluid was collected from all participating patients. By using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, a quantitative assessment of IL-1α and IL-1β levels was possible. The immunologic results were correlated to the clinical periodontal data. The gingival fluid levels of cytokines were higher for periodontitis patients with chronic hepatitis C than for the systemically healthy periodontitis patients (1.8-fold higher for IL-1α and 2.1-fold higher for IL-1β). In addition, the gingival fluid cytokine levels were significantly higher for the periodontal patients (with/without chronic hepatitis C) than for the control group. Positive correlations were found between gingival fluid IL-1α and IL-1β levels and certain clinical periodontal parameters or the age of the viral hepatitis C diagnosis, in periodontitis patients with chronic hepatitis C. The chronic hepatic inflammation may have an important additional negative impact on the periodontal status, as both inflammatory reactions seem to be promoted by common pro-inflammatory cytokines. Periodontal pathology exhibits a great variety of clinical forms and manifestations, despite the fact that they are caused by the same etiologic factor - the subgingival bacterial plaque. These variations originate from the interference of the bacterial challenge to the periodontal tissues with the host immune response of the patient. These two elements express a complex association, which is often impacted by a series of local/oral risk factors, exerting a predisposing influence on the onset and evolution patterns of the periodontal diseases. The oral risk factors can change the characteristics of the local inflammatory periodontal reaction, and also increase the retention and accumulation of bacterial plaque, hence creating favorable conditions for the development of periodontal diseases. The characteristics of our modern society put a lot of pressure on the normal function of the liver and its metabolic role, with an increased intake of fatty and sweet foods, abusive alcohol consumption or over-medication. These elements impact the hepatic function and can favor the onset of conditions such as the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This disease can be a gateway towards other metabolic conditions like diabetes mellitus and obesity, since important pathophysiological mechanisms, as insulin resistance, can occur. In periodontal medicine, such metabolic disorders are viewed as high risk factors for the onset of periodontal disease, considering their impact on the host immune response. This lead to the official recognition of periodontal disease as the 6th complication of diabetes mellitus. The studies on the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and periodontal disease are scarce and their results are so far inconclusive. However, given the important metabolic processes that the liver controls and their impact on periodontal health and pathology, further studies are required on the matter, in order to clarify the characteristics of this connection. Disappearance of an eye, tongue, soft palate or cheek raises serious issues regarding the resumption of partial or total functions of that region, in terms of social reintegration of the patient. In the cephalic extremity, the reconstruction material is limited, so that specialists resort to resources located away from the defect to achieve closure or coverage. Introduction and Aim. Oral microbiota has shown a higher bacterial diversity and abundance in individuals with digestive tract malignancies. According to recent research, some periopathogens link to gastro-intestinal neoplastic tissue and accelerate its progression. The present study was carried out to evaluate a possible association between the abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Tannerella forsythia and periodontal status with the characteristics of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods. Twenty-four patients with gastric cancer were examined and divided in two groups, with periodontitis and gingivitis. The patients' oral cavity was examined, gingival crevicular samples were collected, and the following parameters were recorded: number of absent teeth, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss and bleeding on probing. Quantitative real-time polymerase-chain-reaction was used to evaluate the amount of the two bacteria in the gingival crevicular fluid samples. The differentiation grade and tumour dimension were registered during the histopathological exam of the gastric cancer tissues. Following the statistical analysis, correlations between periodontal disease's clinical parameters, the bacterial strains identified, and the characteristics of gastric cancer were made. Results. The strong significant correlation between tumour dimension and all periodontal parameters (p < 0.05) but also between the size of the tumour and F. nucleatum (p < 0.05) could suggest a positive association between periodontal disease, gastric tumoral growth and periopathogens' implication in this process. A moderate significant correlation was found between tumour dimension and T. forsythia (p < 0.05). The low differentiation grade was most common across both groups. Conclusions. Our findings point to a potential association between periodontal disease, the two subgingival periopathogens evaluated and gastric cancer's evolution. Consequently, we can state that further research is required for a more comprehensive understanding of this deadly disease, for early diagnosis and for discovering new strategies to limit its progression.
