1. Spatial profiles of collimated laser Compton-scattering $\gamma$-ray beams

Abstract

The intensity and energy spatial distributions of collimated laser Compton scattering (LCS) $\gamma$-ray beams and of the associated bremsstrahlung beams have been investigated as functions of the electron beam energy, electron beam phase space distribution, laser optics conditions and laser polarization. We show that the beam halo is affected to different extents by variations in the above listed parameters. In the present work, we have used laser Compton scattering simulations performed with the \texttt{eliLaBr} code (https://github.com/dan-mihai-filipescu/eliLaBr) and real LCS and bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-ray beams produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. A 500~$\mu$m MiniPIX X-ray camera was used as beamspot monitor in a wide $\gamma$-ray beam energy range between 1.73~MeV and 38.1~MeV.

Abstract

Intense, quasi-monochromatic, polarized $\gamma$-ray beams produced by Compton scattering of laser photons against relativistic electrons are used for fundamental studies and applications. Following a series of photoneutron cross section measurements in the Giant Dipole Resonance energy region performed at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility, we have developed the eliLaBr Monte Carlo simulation code for characterization of the scattered $\gamma$-ray photon beams. The code is implemented using Geant4 and is available on the GitHub repository (https://github.com/dan-mihai-filipescu/eliLaBr). Here we report the validation of the eliLaBr code on NewSUBARU LCS $\gamma$-ray beam flux and spectral distribution data and two applications performed with it for asymmetric transverse emittance profiles electron beams, characteristic for synchrotrons. The first application is based on a systematic investigation of transverse collimator offsets relative to the laser and electron beam axis. We show that the maximum energy of the LCS $\gamma$-ray beam is altered by vertical collimator offsets, where the edge shifts towards lower energies with the increase in the offset. Secondly, using the eliLaBr code, we investigate the effect of the laser polarization plane orientation on the properties of the LCS $\gamma$-ray beams produced with asymmetric emittance electron beams. We show that: 1. The use of vertically polarized lasers contributes to the preservation of the LCS $\gamma$-ray beam maximum energy edge by increasing the precision in the vertical collimator alignment. 2. Under identical conditions for the electron and laser beams phase-space distributions, the energy spectrum of the scattered LCS $\gamma$-ray beam changes with the laser beam polarization plane orientation: the use of vertically polarized laser beams slightly deteriorates the LCS $\gamma$-ray beam energy resolution.

Abstract

A high-and-flat efficiency moderated neutron detection array of 3He counters has been recently developed for photoneutron cross section measurements at the future ELI-NP gamma-ray beam source. We have designed a three rings geometry of 31 counters with a ˜37% efficiency flat within 5% in the 10 keV to 5 MeV neutron energy interval. A commissioning experiment was performed using proton beams delivered by the 9 MV Tandem accelerator of IFIN-HH. We measured the neutron production cross sections for proton induced reactions on nat Cu and 27Al. The (p, xn) reactions on nat Cu were investigated in the 4.5 MeV to 14 MeV proton energy range with 250 keV steps, using pulsed and continuous proton beams. The low energy measurements below 10 MeV served to validate the detection efficiency calibration against well-known natCu(p, n) cross sections. The 27Al(p, n) reaction was investigated in the 5.8 MeV to 6.75 MeV energy range with 5 keV steps. Preliminary cross section results are here compared with preceding data.

Abstract

10. Prompt neutron emission calculations for the photon induced reactions of 238U and 232Th in the giant dipole resonance energy region.

Abstract

Prompt emission calculations for the photon induced fission of 238U and 232Th in the GDR energy region were performed by using (a) a systematic of input parameters for the most probable fragmentation approach (obtained on the basis of only spontaneous and neutron induced fission of actinides) and (b) photo-fission cross section ratios (expressing the fission probabilities at incident energies where multiple fission chances are involved) provided by nuclear reaction calculations performed with the EMPIRE code. The prompt neutron emission results describe well the experimental data recently measured at the laser Compton-scattering γ-ray source of the NewSUBARU facility, validating the use of this input parameter systematic for photon induced fission, too. The modelings and procedures described in this paper can constitute an useful tool for the prediction of prompt neutron emission data in photon induced reactions without any experimental information. Abstract

The well-known problem of noticeable disagreements between photoneutron cross sections from various experiments was discussed in detail for 209Bi. Data for partial photoneutron reactions cross sections obtained at Livermore (USA) using quasimonoenergetic annihilation photons and the method of neutron multiplicity sorting were analyzed using the objective physical criteria and the experimental-theoretical method for evaluation. Because of significant systematic uncertainties involved in the method for determining the neutron multiplicity, experimental data do not satisfy the criteria of reliability and differ noticeably from the evaluated data. The new experimental data for 209Bi (γ, in) reactions with i = 1–4 were obtained using quasimonochromatic laser Compton-scattering (LCS) γ-ray beams at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility and the novel technique of direct neutron-multiplicity sorting with a flat-efficiency detector. It was found that new σ(γ, 1n), σ (γ, 2n), and σ (γ, 3n) contradict noticeably to the Livermore data. It was shown that at the same time the new 209Bi photoneutron cross-sections are in good agreement with data evaluated using experimental-theoretical method and assuring the reliability of those.

Abstract

A specific objective of the recent IAEA Coordinated Research Project on Photonuclear Data and Photon Strength Functions (Code F41032; Duration 2016-2019) has been to measure photonuclear cross-section data where needed, for unexplored nuclei and cases of discrepant existing data. A dedicated experimental campaign has been conducted at the laser Compton-scattering γ-ray source of the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility of SPring8, Japan, where photoneutron reactions for 11 nuclei from 9Be to 209Bi have been investigated in the Giant Dipole Resonance energy region. The measurements followed the development of a flat-effi ciency moderated neutron detection array and the associated neutron-multiplicity sorting techniques. The IAEA CRP campaign has been followed at NewSUBARU by new measurements of photofission and photoneutron reactions on 238U and 232Th in the energy range of 5.87 MeV – 20.14 MeV. The neutron-multiplicity sorting of high-multiplicity fission neutron coincidence events has been performed using a dedicated energy dependent, multiple firing statistical treatment. The photoneutron (γ, xn) and photofission (γ, fxn) reactions have been discriminated by considering a Gaussian distribution of prompt-fission-neutrons (PFN) multiplicities predicted by the evaporation theory. We here provide preliminary experimental (γ, n), (γ, 2n) and (γ, F) cross sections, average energies of PFN and of photoneutrons emitted in (γ, n) and (γ, 2n) reactions, as well as the mean number of PFN per fission act. Abstract

We present the latest development of measuring (γ, n) cross sections and giant dipole resonance (GDR) cross sections in the IAEA photonuclear data project. Photoneutron cross sections were measured for 21 isotopes below 2n threshold to construct the γ-ray strength function (γSF) with the γSF method; (γ, n) cross sections are used as experimental constraints on the model E1 and M1 γSFs from the Hartree–Fock–Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction supplemented with the M1 upbend. GDR cross sections were measured for 11 nuclei from9Be to209Bi by direct neutron-multiplicity sorting with a flat-efficiency neutron detector toward a goal of resolving the long-standing discrepancy between the Livermore and Saclay data. Abstract

Absolute cross sections for the 86Sr(α,n)89Zr reaction at energies close to the Gamow window are reported. Three thin SrF2 targets were irradiated using the 9 MV Tandem facility in IFIN-HH Bucharest that delivered α beams for the activation process. Two high-purity Germanium detectors were used to measure the induced activity of 89Zr in a low background environment. The experimental results are in very good agreement with Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations performed with the TALYS code.

One of the main research system to be installed and operated in the facility is an outstanding high brilliance gamma beam system. The Gamma Beam System of ELI–NP will produce intense, quasi–monochromatic gamma beams via inverse Compton scattering of short laser pulses on relativistic electron beam pulses. The gamma beams available at ELI–NP will allow for the performance of photo-nuclear reactions aiming to reveal the intimate structure of the atomic nucleus. Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence, photo-fission, photo-disintegration reactions above the particle threshold will be used to study the dipole response of nuclei, the structure of the Pygmy resonances, nuclear processes relevant for astrophysics, production and study of exotic neutron–rich nuclei.

The PHOENIX (PHOto-Excitation and Neutron emIssion cross [X] sections) Collaboration has been established for the IAEA-CRP in the γ-ray beam line GACKO (GAmma Collaboration hutch of KOnan university) of the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. Abstract

The photoneutron cross sections of Dy162,163 have been measured for the first time in an energy region from the neutron threshold (Sn) up to ≈13MeV. The (γ,n) reaction was induced with quasimonochromatic laser Compton-scattered γ rays, produced at the NewSUBARU laboratory. The corresponding γ-ray strength functions (γSF) have been calculated from the photoneutron cross sections. The data are compared to reanalyzed γSFs of Dy160-164, which are measured below Sn. The excellent agreement with the photoneutron data at Sn confirms the principle of detailed balance. Thus, a complete γSF is established covering in total the energy region of 1≤Eγ≤13 MeV. These mid-shell well-deformed dysprosium isotopes all show scissors resonances with very similar structures. We find that our data predict the same integrated scissors strength as (γ,γ′) data when integrated over the same energy range, which shows that the scissors mode very likely is consistent with the generalized Brink hypothesis. Finally, using the γSFs as input in the reaction code talys, we have deduced radiative neutron-capture cross sections and compared them to direct measurements. Abstract

Neutron-induced reaction cross sections are important for a wide variety of research fields ranging from the study of nuclear level densities, nucleosynthesis to applications of nuclear technology like design, and criticality and safety assessment of existing and future nuclear reactors, radiation dosimetry, medical applications, nuclear waste transmutation, accelerator-driven systems and fuel cycle investigations. Simulations and calculations of nuclear technology applications largely rely on evaluated nuclear data libraries. The evaluations in these libraries are based both on experimental data and theoretical models. CERN’s neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF has produced a considerable amount of experimental data since it has become fully operational with the start of its scientific measurement programme in 2001. While for a long period a single measurement station (EAR1) located at 185 m from the neutron production target was available, the construction of a second beam line at 20 m (EAR2) in 2014 has substantially increased the measurement capabilities of the facility. An outline of the experimental nuclear data activities at n_TOF will be presented.

Abstract

The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN's n_TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n_TOF's new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1). Preliminary results as well as the experimental procedure, including a description of the facility and the data handling and analysis, are presented.

Abstract

he study of the resonant structures in neutron-nucleus cross-sections, and therefore of the compound-nucleus reaction mechanism, requires spectroscopic measurements to determine with high accuracy the energy of the neutron interacting with the material under study. To this purpose, the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF has been operating since 2001 at CERN. Its characteristics, such as the high intensity instantaneous neutron flux, the wide energy range from thermal to few GeV, and the very good energy resolution, are perfectly suited to perform high-quality measurements of neutron-induced reaction cross sections. The precise and accurate knowledge of these cross sections plays a fundamental role in nuclear technologies, nuclear astrophysics and nuclear physics. Two different measuring stations are available at the n_TOF facility, called EAR1 and EAR2, with different characteristics of intensity of the neutron flux and energy resolution. These experimental areas, combined with advanced detection systems lead to a great flexibility in performing challenging measurement of high precision and accuracy, and allow the investigation isotopes with very low cross sections, or available only in small quantities, or with very high specific activity. The characteristics and performances of the two experimental areas of the n_TOF facility will be presented, together with the most important measurements performed to date and their physics case. In addition, the significant upcoming measurements will be introduced.

Abstract

Absolute cross sections for the 86Sr(α,n)89Zr reaction at energies close to the Gamow window are reported. Three thin SrF2 targets were irradiated using the 9MV Tandem facility in IFIN-HH Bucharest that delivered α beams for the activation process. Two high-purity Germanium detectors were used to measure the induced activity of 89Zr in a low background environment. The experimental results are in very good agreement with Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations performed with the TALYS code. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics, one of the three pillars of the Extreme Light Infrastructure Pan-European initiative, is a new large scale facility dedicated to nuclear physics with extreme electromagnetic fields. ELI-NP will host two 10 PW lasers and a very brilliant Gamma beam system with unprecedented intensity and energy resolution parameters. We propose to perform photon induced nuclear reactions using the very brilliant γ-ray beams provided by the Gamma beam system to examine in detail the photon absorption process and its decay modes.
