Abstract

Background. Discussion on the impact of pocket money on positive behaviors is still debated.Objective. To investigate the effect of diverse money allowance schemes on risky behaviors (smoking, alcohol, binge drinking, drug use, gambling) during adolescence.Method. 989 students aged 15 from Lombardy (Italy) reported information on money availability in the 2018 wave of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. To analyze the relationship between money availability and risky behaviors we computed odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals through unconditional multiple logistic regression models.Results. Spending more than 10(sic) weekly was associated with higher likelihood to smoke, binge drink or gamble. Receiving pocket money (rather than receiving money upon request) was related to higher likelihood to engage in risky behaviors.Conclusions. Pocket money may have a negative impact on adolescents, particularly with a substantial amount of money. More research is needed to understand why providing money only if needed may serve as a protective factor against risky behaviors.

Abstract

The present study explores the concurrent contribution to sleep problems of individual-related, family-related, and school-related factors in adolescence. Gathering from the Italian 2018 Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) data collection, we used hierarchical logistic regression on a sample of 3397 adolescents (51% females, Mage = 13.99, SD = 1.62) to explore the contribution to sleep problems of the individual (Model 1: alcohol use, smoking, screen time, physical activity), familial (Model 2: parental communication, parental support), and school-related (Model 3: peer support, schoolmates/students support, teacher support and school pressure) variables. 28.3 percent of adolescents reported having sleep difficulties. Overall, Model 3 significantly improved over Model 2 and Model 1. Data showed that increasing smoking (OR = 1.11; 95% CI: 1.03–1.20) and screen time (OR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02–1.08) were associated with sleep difficulties but not alcohol use and physical activity. Also, impaired communication with both parents and increasing parental support (OR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.78–0.90) were associated with decreased odds of sleep problems. Finally, both increases in school pressure (OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.26–1.56) and lack of student support (OR = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.10–1.42) were associated with a higher likelihood of sleep problems, while peer support and teacher support were not. Abstract

The public paths network in Spain constitutes state property in the public domain which is endangered by disappearance or misappropriation. This exploratory article asks how this situation has an impact on the right to the landscape. We provide an overview of the situation of public paths in Spain, as well as examples from six case studies, which reveals that much conflict stems from changes in their use and the practices related to them. Public pathways play a key role in the perception of the territory, and their disappearance entails landscape injustices which we need to distinguish from landscapes of injustice.

17. Fatal CD8+ epidermotropic cytotoxic primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma with multiorgan involvement

Abstract

A 70-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of two ulcerated erythematous-violaceous nodular lesions over the nose and forehead, respectively. The patient's history included a similar cutaneous nodule on the glabella diagnosed as pseudolymphoma 2 years ago. At that time, despite the diagnosis of a benign disease, an adequate staging was performed, ruling out any extracutaneous involvement. During hospitalization, multiple purpuric papules developed over the abdomen, and the disease spread to mediastinal lymph nodes, lungs and the central nervous system. Based on the histologic, immunophenotypic and molecular biology findings, a diagnosis of CD8+ epidermotropic cytotoxic primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma was made. Secondary skin involvement by a CD8+ extracutaneous T-cell lymphoma could not be excluded with certainty, but seemed to be unlikely because of the negativity of the initial work-up. The patient died from complications of right femoral artery thrombosis before starting specific polychemotherapy 21 months after onset of the disease. Among primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, the CD8+ epidermotropic cytotoxic subset comprises rare, highly aggressive forms characterized by metastatic spread to unusual sites such as the oral cavity, lungs, testis and the central nervous system but usually not to the lymph nodes. These cases seem to be distinct from mycosis fungoides with CD8+ phenotype, which shows a nonaggressive clinical behavior. Copyright © 2005 S. Karger AG.

Abstract

We report a primary cutaneous follicular center cell lymphoma (PCFCCL) that arose on the nose and the left naso-labial fold, spread to the left cheek, the left maxillary sinus, and the soft palate in a 16-year-old boy. Polychemotherapy was performed and the patient is disease-free after 41 months. This case is unusual because PCFCCL rarely arises on the nose, only occasionally disseminates to extracutaneous sites, and, to our knowledge, has never been described in pediatric patients.

19. The importance of diagnosing genital herpes.

Abstract

Genital herpes is the result of infection by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and, to a lesser extent, HSV-1. Recent years have seen a rise in the prevalence of genital HSV infection in both industrialized and developing countries. The main factors attributed to the spread of HSV infection include asymptomatic virus shedding, and under-recognition and under-diagnosis of the disease. At the level of the individual patient, genital herpes is associated with significant psychosocial morbidity and complications such as neonatal herpes, the result of transmission of HSV from mother to baby. HSV-2 infection is also implicated in the transmission and acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). As genital HSV infection has substantial public health implications, increased awareness of the disease and its prevalence, together with better use of diagnostic tests, may be one step towards more effective management and infection control.

Abstract

Landscape quality has become a fundamental issue in the development of renewable energy (henceforth abbreviated RE) projects. Rapid technological advances in RE production and distribution, coupled with changing policy frameworks, bring specific challenges during planning in order to avoid degradation of landscape quality. The current work provides a comprehensive review on RE landscapes and the impacts of RE systems on landscape for most European countries. It is based on a review by an interdisciplinary international team of experts of empirical research findings on landscape impacts of RE from thirty-seven countries that have participated in the COST Action TU1401 Renewable Energy and Landscape Quality (RELY).

Abstract

A 70-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of two ulcerated erythematous-violaceous nodular lesions over the nose and forehead, respectively. The patient's history included a similar cutaneous nodule on the glabella diagnosed as pseudolymphoma 2 years ago. At that time, despite the diagnosis of a benign disease, an adequate staging was performed, ruling out any extracutaneous involvement. During hospitalization, multiple purpuric papules developed over the abdomen, and the disease spread to mediastinal lymph nodes, lungs and the central nervous system. Based on the histologic, immunophenotypic and molecular biology findings, a diagnosis of CD8+ epidermotropic cytotoxic primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma was made. Secondary skin involvement by a CD8+ extracutaneous T-cell lymphoma could not be excluded with certainty, but seemed to be unlikely because of the negativity of the initial work-up. The patient died from complications of right femoral artery thrombosis before starting specific polychemotherapy 21 months after onset of the disease. Among primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, the CD8+ epidermotropic cytotoxic subset comprises rare, highly aggressive forms characterized by metastatic spread to unusual sites such as the oral cavity, lungs, testis and the central nervous system but usually not to the lymph nodes. These cases seem to be distinct from mycosis fungoides with CD8+ phenotype, which shows a nonaggressive clinical behavior. Copyright © 2005 S. Karger AG.

Abstract

We report a primary cutaneous follicular center cell lymphoma (PCFCCL) that arose on the nose and the left naso-labial fold, spread to the left cheek, the left maxillary sinus, and the soft palate in a 16-year-old boy. Polychemotherapy was performed and the patient is disease-free after 41 months. This case is unusual because PCFCCL rarely arises on the nose, only occasionally disseminates to extracutaneous sites, and, to our knowledge, has never been described in pediatric patients.

Abstract

Bowen's disease (BD) is a form of intraepidermal squamous cell carcinoma, which is clinically characterized by gradually enlarging, well-demarcated erythematous plaques with irregular borders and surface crusting or scaling, affecting primarily the elderly. BD often presents with lesions difficult to treat with standard therapy as surgery, cryosurgery, or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for the risk of significantly poor cosmetic outcome, failure rate, and adverse events, related mainly to the age of the patients. Topical PDT with methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) represents a valid and approved therapy for BD lesions in many cases, especially for lesions located at poor healing sites or for large patches of disease, due to its high efficacy coupled with good tolerability and tissue-sparing attitude. In this study, we sought to investigate the efficacy, safety, and cosmetic outcome of MAL-PDT in a series of patients with BD lesions which were challenging to treat for clinical, surgical, and patient-related reasons, such as size of the lesion, difficult surgical approach for anatomical sites, or age of patients and request of the best cosmetic result. Abstract

Five patients who presented stable bands of hair of a different color with respect to the surrounding hair are reported. In 4 patients this was an isolated finding. One patient also had diffuse linear skin hypopigmentation and other abnormalities. We hypothesize that these 5 cases represent a distinct type of hair heterochromia, possibly because of somatic mosaicism for genes affecting pigmentation.
