Background: Seafood allergy is potentially severe, but the prevalence of this group of food allergies in Iran, has not been determined. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of seafood allergy in student living in Bushehr and Borazjan. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional, random school survey by using a questionnaire in 2012-13. A total of 608 (36% male, and 64%) female) were asked questions about personal and family history of allergies, food and seafood allergy. Results: The overall prevalence of food allergy was 12% (Total 73 subjects, 69.8% male and 30.2% female), and seafood allergy was 4.4% (Total 27 subjects, 36.6% male, 43.4% female). Fish allergy (1.4%) and shrimp and shellfish allergy (3.5%) were reported. The most frequently reported symptoms were skin (49.3%), gastrointestinal (28.7%), and respiratory reactions (2.7%). Seafood allergy was not associated with subjects reporting atopic diseases, significantly (P> 0.05), while the other food allergy was positively associated (P=0.00). Conclusion: Our study is the first report on prevalence estimates for seafood allergy in Bushehr province. Findings indicated high prevalence of seafood allergy in student, therefore further studies and significant health concern is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This systematic review study investigated the cost-effectiveness of stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for treatment of various types of cancers., Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from 30 December 1990 to 1 January 2023. The entered studies were screened in accordance with the inclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria encompassed all types of economic evaluation studies that investigated SRT/SRS technologies in the treatment of various cancers., Results: A total of 47 articles were included in the review. The findings suggest that the use of Linear accelerator technology for the treatment of lung cancer (8 out of 12 studies) and prostate cancer (4 out of 5 studies) was a cost-effective strategy. Linear accelerator was found to be cost-effective in the treatment of liver metastases and liver cancer (2 out of 5 studies). All of the included studies that used Gamma Knife technology in brain metastases reported Gamma-Knife was a cost-effective treatment. Furthermore, in the treatment of prostate and liver cancer, proton therapy was identified as a cost-effective option than other treatments., Conclusions: This study confirms that SRT/SRS is a cost-effective procedure for the treatment of various types of cancers. Therefore, it is recommended to use SRT/SRS technology for optimal use of resources.

This study aimed to find a new CSF hydrodynamic index to assess Chiari type I malformation (CM-I) patients' conditions and examine the relationship of this new index with morphometric and volumetric changes in these patients and their clinical symptoms. To this end, 58 CM-I patients in four groups and 20 healthy subjects underwent PC-MRI. Ten morphometric and three volumetric parameters were calculated. The CSF hydrodynamic parameters were also analyzed through computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation. The maximum CSF pressure was identified as a new hydrodynamic parameter to assess the CM-I patients' conditions. This parameter was similar in patients with the same symptoms regardless of the group to which they belonged. The result showed a weak correlation between the maximum CSF pressure and the morphometric parameters in the patients. Among the volumetric parameters, PCF volume had the highest correlation with the maximum CSF pressure, which its value being higher in patients with CM-I/SM/scoliosis (R 2  = 65.6%, P = 0.0022) than in the other patients. PCF volume was the more relevant volumetric parameter to assess the patients' symptoms. The values of PCF volume were greater in patients that headache symptom was more obvious than other symptoms, as compared to the other patients.

Background: Bruxism is among the habits considered generally as contributory factors for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and its etiology is still controversial., Methods: Three-dimensional models of maxilla and mandible and teeth of 37 patients and 36 control subjects were created using in-vivo image data. The maximum values of stress and deformation were calculated in 21 patients six months after using a splint and compared with those in the initial conditions., Results: The maximum stresses in the jaw bone and head of mandible were respectively 4.4 and 4.1 times higher in patients than in control subjects. Similar values for deformation were 5.8 and 4.9, respectively. The maximum stress in the jaw bone and head of mandible decreased six months after splint application by up to 71.0 and 72.8%, respectively. Similar values for the maximum deformation were 80.7 and 78.7%, respectively. Following the occlusal splint therapy, the approximation of maximum deformation to the relevant values in control subjects was about 2.6 times the approximation of maximum stress to the relevant values in control subjects. The maximum stress and maximum deformation occurred in all cases in the head of the mandible and the splint had the highest effectiveness in jaw bone adjacent to the molar teeth., Conclusions: Splint acts as a stress relaxer and dissipates the extra stresses generated as well as the TMJ deformation and deviations due to bruxism. The splint also makes the bilateral and simultaneous loading possible and helps with the treatment of this disorder through regulation of bruxism by creating a biomechanical equilibrium between the physiological loading and the generated stress.

Objectives: Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome which is associated with the worldwide major public health problems. There are many natural compounds from the sea-market, as a valuable aquatic source, along with the variety of health and therapeutic benefits. In the present research, with respect to the traditional and ethnic uses of Sargassum oligocystum algae for healing of some diseases which have similar metabolic mechanism to the diabetes, its anti-diabetic effects in animal model was proposed., Materials and Methods: The animals (rat) were divided into the normal control, diabetic control, positive control and, the test groups. The test groups were gavaged with oral doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg of algae hydroalcoholic extracts. After 30 days of intervention the serum glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL C , LDL C , insulin, insulin resistance, β-cells function and, the histopathology of pancreatic tissue were evaluated., Results: In animals that were fed with algae extracts a significant decrease in the fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and HOMA-IR and an increase in the HOMA-B with no significant impacts on the insulin, cholesterol and HDL were observed. Also, the histopathology evaluations in the groups which were treated with algae extract revealed the regeneration and reconstitution of damaged pancreatic β-cells., Conclusion: The results give evidence that, the S. oligocystum algae extract has a healing effect on diabetes which can be considered as a new research prospect for the natural therapy of diabetes.

Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is strongly related to morbidity and mortality. Oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis play key roles in renal dysfunction following renal I/R. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic which used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Recent studies have reported aripiprazole as displaying certain anti-inflammatory effects. Regarding the underlying mechanisms of renal ischemia-reperfusion, therefore, nephroprotective effects might be predicted to be seen with aripiprazole. I/R injury was induced by bilateral clamping of the renal pedicles (45min) followed by reperfusion (24h). The mechanism of aripiprazole-mediated nephroprotection was explored by a combined use of aripiprazole and L-NAME (non-selective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor). Animals were given aripiprazole (2.5, 5, 10 and 20mg/kg) intraperitoneally, 30min before ischemia. L-NAME was administered before the aripiprazole injection. Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were assessed after 24h of reperfusion. Serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), TNF-α and IL-1β were measured for rats treated with aripiprazole. The extent of necrosis was measured by the stereology method. Ischemia/reperfusion caused significant renal dysfunction and marked renal injury. Aripiprazole reduced creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. Serum levels of MDA, IL-1β and TNF-α were significantly lower in the aripiprazole group. Aripiprazole treatment also decreased the volume of kidney necrosis. The administration of L-NAME reversed the renoprotective effect of aripiprazole on BUN and creatinine, but enhanced the anti-necrotic effect of aripiprazole. The results show that a single dose of aripiprazole significantly improved renal function following ischemia/reperfusion injury - probably through the involvement of nitric oxide., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Asthma and allergic diseases present a major health burden. Information on the prevalence of these diseases indicates that these diseases are increasing in various parts of the world. It was hoped that this study would be helpful to health system policy-makers in planning allergy prevention programs in the region.The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases and relation between the various risk factors involved were assessed among schoolchildren in the city of Bushehr, Iran. The ISAAC Phase I and III questionnaires were completed by parents of 1280 children aged 6-7 years and self-completed by 1115 students aged 13-14 years.The prevalence of atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma among 6-7 year-old students were 12.1%, 11.8% and 6.7%, respectively. While, the prevalence of these diseases among 13-14 year-old students were found to be 19%, 30% and 7.6%, respectively. There was an association between asthma and allergic rhinitis as well as eczema (p<0.05). Consumption of fast food as a risk factor was significantly associated with asthma (p=0.03).The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases was high among schoolchildren in the city of Bushehr, Iran. Also an association was observed between the fast food consumption and asthma.
