Abstract

The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) has been widely used around the world in both agricultural and non-agricultural fields due to its high activity. However, the heavy use of 2,4-D has resulted in serious environmental contamination, posing a significant risk to non-target organisms, including human beings. This has raised substantial concerns regarding its impact. In addition to agricultural use, accidental spills of 2,4-D can pose serious threats to human health and the ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of prompt pollution remediation. A variety of technologies have been developed to remove 2,4-D residues from the environment, such as incineration, adsorption, ozonation, photodegradation, the photo-Fenton process, and microbial degradation. Compared with traditional physical and chemical remediation methods, microorganisms are the most effective way to remediate 2,4-D pollution because of their rich species, wide distribution, and diverse metabolic pathways. Numerous studies demonstrate that the degradation of 2,4-D in the environment is primarily driven by enzymatic processes carried out by soil microorganisms. To date, a number of bacterial and fungal strains associated with 2,4-D biodegradation have been isolated, such as Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Cupriavidus, Achromobacter, Ochrobactrum, Mortierella, and Umbelopsis. Moreover, several key enzymes and genes responsible for 2,4-D biodegradation are also being identified. However, further in-depth research based on multi-omics is needed to elaborate their role in the evolution of novel catabolic pathways and the microbial degradation of 2,4-D. Here, this review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent progress on elucidating the degradation mechanisms of the herbicide 2,4-D, including the microbial strains responsible for its degradation, the enzymes participating in its degradation, and the associated genetic components. Furthermore, it explores the complex biochemical pathways and molecular mechanisms involved in the biodegradation of 2,4-D. In addition, molecular docking techniques are employed to identify crucial amino acids within an alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent 2,4-D dioxygenase that interacts with 2,4-D, thereby offering valuable insights that can inform the development of effective strategies for the biological remediation of this herbicide. Abstract

To improve the mechanical properties of proton exchange membranes, consequently improving the performance of direct borohydride fuel cells, the present study prepared sulfonated chitosan-g-sulfonated polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide doped with sulfated zirconia composite (SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2) polyelectrolyte membranes. Two fabrication techniques were followed, solution casting and electrospinning, to have the membranes in film and fiber forms and study the effect of the different forms on the membrane’s physicochemical properties. For the casting technique, different concentrations of SZrO2 (1-3 wt%) were used, while the optimum concentration of SZrO2 (3 wt%) was used in the electrospun one (SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2-CF). SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2-C membranes were prepared in a single step. The grafting and the crosslinking were carried out using glutaraldehyde and sulfosuccinic acid as sulfonating agents for chitosan and PVA and coupling agents simultaneously using click chemistry. On the other hand, SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2-CF membranes were prepared in two steps. They were fabricated with electrospinning and then dipped into the coupling and crosslinking solutions. The casting membranes’ physicochemical properties were improved by increasing the SZrO2 content. The experimental results further show that the fabrication procedure significantly influences the physicochemical properties of the membranes. For instance, the composite fiber membrane demonstrated higher selectivity and higher ion exchange capacity (IEC) than the casting membrane. Furthermore, by using the response surface methodology model, the effects of ion exchange capacity, water uptake, and oxidative stability were optimized as three independent variables that affected the ionic conductivity of SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2-3C. The optimized ionic conductivity of the SCS-g-SPVA/PEO/SZrO2-3C membrane was 13.6 mS cm−1, achieved at the maximum point of the polynomial model, with an IEC of 0.74 meq g−1, ∼92% water uptake, and about 93% oxidative stability.

Abstract

Purpose three dimensional (3-D) virtual planning is an example of computer assisted surgery that improved management of composite tissue defects. However, converting the 3-D construct into two dimensional format is challenging. The purpose of this study was to assess 3-D virtual planning of complex heel defects for better optimized reconstruction. Patients and methods a prospective analysis of 10 patients [9 male and 1 female; mean age = 27.9 years] with post-traumatic heel defects was performed. Heel defects comprised types II (three patients) or III (seven patients) according to Hidalgo and Shaw and were managed using anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap adopting 3-D virtual planning of the actual defect which was converted into a silicone two dimensional mold. The mean definitive size of the defects was 63.4 cm(3). Functional, aesthetic, and sensory evaluations of both donor and recipient sites were performed 1 year after surgery. Results Six patients received thinned ALT (mean size = 139 cm(3)) while four patients received musculofasciocutaneous ALT flap (mean size = 199 cm(3)). One flap exhibited partial skin flap necrosis. Another flap was salvaged after re-exploration secondary to venous congestion. The mean follow-up was 20.2 months. The Maryland foot score showed 4 excellent, 5 good, and 1 fair cases. The mean American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle hind foot scoring was 76.3 (range: 69-86). All patients regained their walking capability. Conclusions 3-D virtual planning of complex heel defects facilitates covering non-elliptical defects while harvesting a conventional elliptical flap with providing satisfactory functional outcomes and near-normal contour, volume, and sensibility.
