This article presents a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the topic of data assimilation for agent-based models, with a specific emphasis on pedestrians and passengers within the context of transportation systems. This work highlights a plethora of advanced techniques that may have not been previously employed for online pedestrian simulation, and may therefore offer significant value to readers in this domain. Notably, these methods often necessitate a sophisticated understanding of mathematical principles such as linear algebra, probability theory, singular value decomposition, optimization, machine learning, and compressed sensing. Despite this complexity, this article strives to provide a nuanced explanation of these mathematical underpinnings. It is important to acknowledge that the subject matter under study is still in its nascent stages, and as such, it is highly probable that new techniques will emerge in the coming years. One potential avenue for future exploration involves the integration of machine learning with Agent-based Data Assimilation (ABDA, i.e., data assimilation methods used for agent-based models) methods. Influenza A virus (IAV) populations harbor large subpopulations of defective-interfering particles characterized by internally deleted viral genomes. These internally deleted genomes have demonstrated the ability to suppress infectivity and boost innate immunity, rendering them promising for therapeutic and immunogenic applications. In this study, we aimed to investigate the diversity and complexity of the internally deleted IAV genomes within a panel of plaque-purified avian influenza viruses selected for their enhanced interferon-inducing phenotypes. Our findings unveiled that the abundance and diversity of internally deleted viral genomes were contingent upon the viral subculture and plaque purification processes. We observed a heightened occurrence of internally deleted genomes with distinct junctions in viral clones exhibiting enhanced interferon-inducing phenotypes, accompanied by additional truncation in the nonstructural 1 protein linker region (NS1Δ76-86). Computational analyses suggest the internally deleted IAV genomes can encode a broad range of carboxy-terminally truncated and intrinsically disordered proteins with variable lengths and amino acid composition. Further research is imperative to unravel the underlying mechanisms driving the increased diversity of internal deletions within the genomes of viral clones exhibiting enhanced interferon-inducing capacities and to explore their potential for modulating cellular processes and immunity. Purpose: Scenario planning is a useful approach that helps policymakers to better understand the complexity and uncertainties that lie in the future and to choose the right policy mix to support the development of renewable and affordable energy sources. In this regard, this paper aims to present renewable energy (RE) development scenarios in Iran in the horizon of 2030. Design/methodology/approach: Following the intuitive logic school and the Global Business Network model, the authors identified seven driving forces, according to the expert's judgment, by brainstorming techniques which influence REs development in the horizon of 2030. By prioritizing driving forces based on their importance and uncertainty, "sustainable and green economy" and "emerging technology development" are the most instrumental uncertainties and the authors formed a two-axis scenario matrix with each representing an axis. Findings: The results suggest four main scenarios of "Transition to Sustainability with Green Gold," "Towards Sustainability with Green Gold," "Productivity with Black Gold" and "Desperation with Black Gold." They include a wide range of possible situations of energy basket in the future ranging from dominance of fossil fuels to dominance of REs. The "Productivity with Black Gold" and the "Towards Sustainability with Green Gold" are the most probable scenarios of RE development by 2030 in Iran. Originality/value: This paper indicates that the dominance of oil and gas resources would impede or at least slow down the development of renewable and affordable energy sources. Although the economic and environmental potentials and the inevitability of REs are well-understood, path dependence created by fossil fuels in Iran's energy regime, either partially or fully, hinders the widespread development of REs which is the case in other resource-based countries as well. Emerging avian influenza viruses pose a high risk to poultry production, necessitating the need for more broadly protective vaccines. Live attenuated influenza vaccines offer excellent protective efficacies but their use in poultry farms is discouraged due to safety concerns related to emergence of reassortant viruses. Vaccination of chicken embryos inside eggs (in ovo) induces early immunity in young chicks while reduces the safety concerns related to the use of live vaccines on farms. However, in ovo vaccination using influenza viruses severely affects the egg hatchability. We previously engineered a high interferon-inducing live attenuated influenza vaccine candidate with an enhanced protective efficacy in chickens. Here, we asked whether we could further modify this high interferon-inducing vaccine candidate to develop an in ovo -compatible live attenuated influenza vaccine. We first showed that the enhanced interferon responses induced by the vaccine is not enough to attenuate the virus in ovo. To reduce the pathogenicity of the virus for chicken embryos, we replaced the hemagglutinin cleavage site of the H7 vaccine virus (PENPKTR/GL) with that of the H6-subtype viruses (PQIETR/GL) and disrupted the ribosomal frameshifting site responsible for viral polymerase acidic X protein expression. In ovo vaccination of chickens with up to 105 median egg infectious dose of the modified vaccine had minimal effects on hatchability while protecting the chickens against a heterologous challenge virus at two weeks of age. This study demonstrates that targeted genetic mutations can be applied to further attenuate and enhance the safety of live attenuated influenza vaccines to develop future in ovo vaccines for poultry. The delayed operation of distance relays zone-2 element for the faults at the end of the line is excessive. It reduces the fault clearing speed and therefore, is one of the main factors that can endanger power system stability. This paper proposes an impedance-based scheme for discrimination between the last 20% of the line length faults and the adjacent line faults, which are covered by the relay zone-2. The suggested non-pilot scheme uses a modified fault location formula for the accelerated zone-2 operation of distance relays. The negative- and zero-sequence components of local signals are utilized to calculate the accurate fault location after the remote circuit breaker (CB) operation. The proposed algorithm is independent of fault resistance, power flow direction, pre-fault condition, and it can clearly distinguish internal faults from the adjacent line faults. Simulation results show that the proposed method can identify the remote CB operation and thus can accelerate the tripping of zone-2 within a very short time for different fault locations, fault types, fault resistances, and load angles. Under irradiation, Zr and Zr alloys undergo growth in the absence of applied stress. This phenomenon is thought to be associated with the anisotropy of diffusion of either or both radiation-induced point defects and defect clusters. In this work, molecular dynamic simulations are used to study the anisotropy of diffusion of self-interstitial atom clusters. Both near-equilibrium clusters generated by aggregation of self-interstitial atoms and cascade-induced clusters were considered. The cascade-induced clusters display more anisotropy than their counterparts produced by aggregation. In addition to 1-dimensional diffusing clusters, 2-dimensional diffusing clusters were observed. Using our molecular dynamic simulations, the input parameters for the "self-interstitial atom cluster bias" rate-theory model were estimated. The radiation-induced growth strains predicted using this model are largely consistent with experiments, but are highly sensitive to the choice of interatomic interaction potential. Influenza A viruses continue to circulate among wild birds and poultry worldwide, posing constant pandemic threats to humans. Effective control of emerging influenza viruses requires new broadly protective vaccines. Live attenuated influenza vaccines with truncations in nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) have shown broad protective efficacies in birds and mammals, which correlate with the ability to induce elevated interferon responses in the vaccinated hosts. Given the extreme diversity of influenza virus populations, we asked if we could improve an NS1-truncated live attenuated influenza vaccine developed for poultry (PC4) by selecting viral subpopulations with enhanced interferon-inducing capacities. Here, we deconstructed a de novo population of PC4 through plaque isolation, created a large library of clones, and assessed their interferon-inducing phenotypes. While most of the clones displayed the parental interferon-inducing phenotype in cell culture, few clones showed enhanced interferon-inducing phenotypes in cell culture and chickens. The enhanced interferon-inducing phenotypes were linked to either a deletion in NS1 (NS1-76-86) or a substitution in polymerase basic 2 protein (PB2-D309N). The NS1-76-86 deletion disrupted the putative eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4GI-binding domain and promoted the synthesis of biologically active interferons. The PB2-D309N substitution enhanced the early transcription of interferon mRNA, revealing a novel role for the 309D residue in suppression of interferon responses. We combined these mutations to engineer a novel vaccine candidate that induced additive amounts of interferons and stimulated protective immunity in chickens. • TARV-infected SPF turkeys recapitulate the disease observed in commercial turkeys. • Reoviral arthritis features in SPF turkeys include: hock joint swelling, tenosynovitis, tibiotarsal cartilage erosion, and gait defects. • SPF turkey reoviral arthritis model will be instrumental in evaluation of TARV pathogenesis and reoviral vaccine efficacy. Turkey arthritis reovirus (TARV) infections have been recognized since 2011 to cause disease and significant economic losses to the U.S. turkey industry. Reoviral arthritis has been reproduced in commercial-origin turkeys. However, determination of pathogenesis or vaccine efficacy in these turkeys can be complicated by enteric reovirus strains and other pathogens that ubiquitously exist at subclinical levels among commercial turkey flocks. In this study, turkeys from a specific-pathogen-free (SPF) flock were evaluated for use as a turkey reoviral arthritis model. One-day-old or 1-week-old poults were orally inoculated with TARV (O'Neil strain) and monitored for disease onset and progression. A gut isolate of turkey reovirus (MN1 strain) was also tested for comparison. Disease was observed only in TARV-infected birds. Features of reoviral arthritis in SPF turkeys included swelling of hock joints, tenosynovitis, distal tibiotarsal cartilage erosion, and gait defects (lameness). Moreover, TARV infection resulted in a significant depression of body weights during the early times post-infection. Age-dependent susceptibility to TARV infection was unclear. TARV was transmitted to all sentinel birds, which manifested high levels of tenosynovitis and tibiotarsal cartilage erosion. Simulation of stressful conditions by dexamethasone treatment did not affect the viral load or exacerbate the disease. Collectively, the clinical and pathological features of reoviral arthritis in the SPF turkey model generally resembled those induced in commercial turkeys under field and/or experimental conditions. The present study deals with the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy processed throughout the novel hot constrained compression (HCC) method. AZ31 core specimens constrained by steel sleeves were compressed in the temperature range of 100 to 600 °C at 0.1 s−1 strain rate, up to true strain of 0.6 mm/mm. Similarly, simple compression (SC) tests were carried out on the AZ31 specimens to compare with the HCC ones. The AZ31 specimens failed under SC while the HCC process was successfully conducted without any sign of failure. This phenomenon is attributed to the hydrostatic pressure imposed by the sleeve steel. Moreover, microstructure characterization revealed that the greater strain accommodation in the HCC case is a result of grain refinement due to severe twinning and preceded dynamic recrystallization (DRX) at low and high temperatures, respectively. Nonetheless, the HCC process beyond 460 °C led to grain growth and coarser microstructure as compared to the SC counterparts. Mechanical properties of processed specimens were investigated at room temperature using shear punch tests. Results indicated that while shear strength and formability of HCC products are premier at low temperature deformation, they are attenuated by increasing the temperature beyond 460 °C. The fault resistance and infeeded currents from tapped transmission lines are the two main challenges to establish correct fault location estimation in multi-terminal transmission lines. Also, fault location estimation in double-circuit lines is more complicated than single-circuit lines due to the effect of mutual coupling and inter-circuit faults. This paper proposes a negative-sequence network-based method to estimate the fault location of double-circuit multi-terminal transmission lines. In the presented method, signals are measured in the relay location and then, communication links are not required as it uses only one end measurements. Also, in conventional distance relays, six elements are needed to calculate the fault location in all types of faults. Furthermore, in this method, by using only one element for each transmission line, accurate fault location can be estimated. Also, high fault resistance, mutual coupling, and infeeded currents from tapped transmission lines do not have impact on the performance of the presented scheme. To investigate the effects of the line shunt capacitances on the proposed method, a PI model of the transmission lines is used in all the investigations. Abstract Avian influenza in poultry continues to be a great concern worldwide, and the currently licensed inactivated influenza vaccines are not effective against the novel strains of influenza virus that continue to emerge in the field. This warrants the development of more broadly protective influenza vaccines or vaccination regimens. Live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) and subunit vaccines derived from viral peptides, such as the highly conserved ectodomain of influenza virus matrix protein 2 (M2e), can offer a more broadly reactive immune response. In chickens, we previously showed that a chimeric norovirus P particle containing M2e (M2eP) could provide partial but broad immunity, when administered as a standalone vaccine, and also enhanced the protective efficacy of inactivated vaccine when used in a combination regimen. We also demonstrated that a naturally-selected NS1-truncated H7N3 LAIV (pc4-LAIV) was highly efficacious against antigenically distant heterologous H7N2 low pathogenicity avian influenza virus challenge, especially when used as the priming vaccine in a prime-boost vaccination regimen. In this study, we investigated the cross-subtype protective efficacy of pc4-LAIV in conjunction with M2eP using single vaccination, combined treatment, and prime-boost approaches. Chickens vaccinated with pc4-LAIV showed significant reduction of tracheal shedding of a low pathogenicity H5N2 challenge virus. This cross-subtype protective efficacy was further enhanced, during the initial stages of challenge virus replication, in chickens that received a vaccination regimen consisting of priming with pc4-LAIV at 1 day of age and boosting with M2eP. Further, H5N2-specific serum IgG and pc4-LAIV-specific hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers were enhanced in LAIV-primed and M2eP boost-vaccinated chickens. Taken together, our data point to the need of further investigation into the benefits of combined and prime-boost vaccination schemes utilizing LAIV and epitope-based vaccines, to develop more broadly protective vaccination regimens. • Proposal has distance protection scheme for the lines connected to the PV plants. • The proposed scheme is independent of PV plant parameters and fault resistance. • In this method the exact fault location is also calculated. The output power of the inverter-interfaced photovoltaic (PV) plant has the continuous variations due to the properties of PV modules and environmental conditions. These variations fundamentally affect the performance of the conventional distance protection during nonmetallic faults. This paper proposes a positive sequence network-based distance protection scheme for the transmission lines connected to the PV plants. Different from the adaptive mho and quadrilateral characteristics, the proposed scheme is independent of PV plant parameters and fault resistance. In this method, the Thevenin equivalent parameters of the grid seen from the PV plant are calculated. Thevenin equivalent parameters are calculated using prefault current and voltage data at the local terminal, without additional costs related to the requirements of the communication channel. The obtained parameters are used in the fault resistance compensation. Furthermore, by eliminating the fault resistance effect on the relay impedance, the exact fault location is also calculated. Since the fault line impedance formula is derived only from the positive sequence network, the proposed method is applicable to different grid codes. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is evaluated on the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) 9-bus and IEEE 30-bus test systems. The presence of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) controllers in transmission lines causes mal-operation of distance relays. The series-shunt FACTS devices have larger influence on the performance of the relays compare to the other FACTS controllers. Furthermore, high-resistance fault is another factor that relay become under-reach and cannot correctly identify the fault. In this paper, a method is provided based on synchrophasors to eliminate the effects of unified power-flow controller (UPFC) and fault resistance on the distance relay. In the presented method, the data of voltage and current signals of buses will be sent to system protection center (SPC). In SPC, an algorithm is provided based on active power calculation in buses which is able to eliminate the effects of both mentioned factors. The main advantage of the proposed method, in addition to the simplicity of the algorithm, is the ability to operate in all types of faults and in high-resistance faults. Furthermore, a technique is presented in this paper to calculate UPFC data. A comparison has been performed between this technique and another method where UPFC data is directly transmitted to SPC by communication channel. Distance relays are often used in the protection of the transmission lines connected to the wind farms. The distance relay using the transmission line impedance measurement identifies the type and location of the fault. However any other factors that cause the failure of the measured impedance, makes the relay detect the fault in incorrect location or do not detect the fault at all. One of these factors is the fault resistance which directly increases the measured impedance by the relay. One of the methods to eliminate relay under-reach effect is using of the trip boundaries. Trip boundaries are changing with wind variation and following with output power of the wind farms. Therefore, trip boundaries should continuously change proportional by the wind speed. In this paper, a method is provided based on the combination of distance and differential protection. In this method, using active power calculation in both ends of the transmission line, fault resistance is calculated and its effects are directly deducted from the calculated impedance by the relay. Therefore, variable trip boundaries are not needed anymore. Also in this method, unlike the technique that the trip boundaries are used, the exact location of fault and its distance from the relay also is calculated. Detailed model of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) driven by a wind turbine is used in the modelling. In this study, a comprehensive model was developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and the behaviour of a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system was investigated at hypersaline feedwater conditions. The effects of various operating parameters including feed and permeate velocities, temperatures and salinities, as well as different membrane characteristics like thickness, porosity, and thermal conductivity were studied. The developed simulation model was also validated using experimental data. The results showed that the membrane conductivity and thickness had a significant impact on the DCMD performance, and the optimum operational condition was necessary to be determined. The results showed that increasing the feedwater salinity from 50 to 200 g/l decreased the membrane flux by up to 33%, while a four times decrease in thermal conductivity of the membrane could lead to an increase in the membrane flux from 11.2 to 32.4 l/m2·h (LMH). In addition, the optimal membrane thickness was found to increase with salinity, reaching >120 μm for treatment of 22 wt% NaCl feedwater solution. However, the flux declined from >32 LMH to <13 LMH upon the increase in feedwater salinity (up to 22 wt% NaCl solution). It is also shown that a thinner membrane performed better for desalination of low salinity feedwater, while the thicker one produces higher separation performance and thermal efficiency for hypersaline brine desalination. Loss of excitation (LOE) protection is one of the most important protections of synchronous generators. Nowadays, application of an impedance relay with two negative offset operation zones to protect LOE is prevalent; this relay measures the output voltage and current of generator to detect LOE. On the other hand, utilization of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices in power systems for different applications is soaring; these devices cause changes in voltage and current signals in the utilized power system. Therefore, this paper is dedicated to investigate the amounts of changes in the current and voltage signals measured by the LOE relay when the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) are used. Research results show that the changes in the measured signals manipulate the operation of the relay. It is also shown that partial LOE culminates in an under-reach of the relay. The existence of a generalized interline power-flow controller (GIPFC) in the transmission lines changes the voltage and current signals which are measured with the protection relays of power system dynamically. In this paper, the effects of the GIPFC on the measured impedance by the loss of excitation (LOE) relay of the synchronous generator are first investigated by analytical and computational methods for different operating modes of the power system. The results indicate that the presence of GIPFC causes a substantial delay on the operation of the LOE relay. It is also shown that when partial LOE occurs, the GIPFC causes to the LOE relay under-reaching. Consequently, to readjust the relay in the presence of the GIPFC, a new modified LOE protection algorithm on the basis of synchronized phasor measurements received from phasor measurement units is presented. The most important advantage of this modified algorithm is that it is a general algorithm which considers all voltage-source-converter-based flexible ac transmission systems controllers. Regarding the simulations results, it is concluded that using the modified algorithm for the LOE relay can sufficiently decrease the delay and prevent the relay from under-reaching. Distance relays detect transmission line faults and their locations by measuring the voltage and the current signals. Also, phase shifting transformers (PSTs) are used to control the power flow in electrical power systems. PSTs protect transmission lines from thermal overloading, improve the stability of transmission system and control the power flow between different networks. Unfortunately, existence of PST in a transmission line vitiates the operation of protection relays by altering the voltage and current signals. In this paper, the effects of the delta–hexagonal PST on the operation of distance relays are investigated by both analytical and computational methods under different fault types and locations. This paper proposes a new auxiliary turbine torsional oscillation damping controller (TTODC) for static var compensator (SVC) to dampen out subsynchronous oscillations in power systems containing series compensated transmission lines. A new TTODC algorithm on the basis of synchronized pliasor measurements received from phasor measurement units (PMUs) is presented. The idea of using remote signals obtained from PMU to dampen subsynchronous resonance (SSR) presented, too. An auxiliary TTODC is proposed for a SVC, using the generator rotor speed deviation signal as the stabilizing and remote signal to dampen subsynchronous oscillations. On the other hand, high-speed fault clearance is an important issue of ensuring the stability of the power system. To address the above problem, an auxiliary fault location (AFL) element based on the proper Kirchhoff voltage law (KVL) loop in the negative- and zero-sequence circuits are designed for distance relays. The input signals to the AFL are the measured signals by local distance relay. The proposed AFL can reduce the zone-2 intentional time delay from 18-28 cycles to 3 cycles. In addition to this, AFL can improve limitations associated with similar methods such as the dependence of these methods to the fault resistance, remote source impedances, and line parameters variation. Abstract: In this paper the impact of Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) on the impedance calculated by distance relay is investigated. Analytical results are presented and verified by detailed simulations. Six different phase to phase and phase to ground measuring units of the distance relay are simulated to resemble the behavior of the relay. It is shown in this paper that zero sequence of the injected voltage by 48 pulse SSSC converter has the most impact on the apparent impedance seen by the phase to ground fault measuring unit and cause under reaching of distance relay. It can be concluded from the results that SSSC located in the middle of the transmission line cause to divide trip characteristics of distance relay into two separate parts. It is also shown that the over-reaching operation of distance relay might happen in some cases in the presence of SSSC. All the detailed simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Abstract: In this paper a novel supplementary subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) is proposed for the STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) which is capable of damping out subsynchronous oscillations in power system with series compensated transmission lines. An auxiliary subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) for a STATCOM using the generator rotor speed deviation signal as the stabilizing signal has been designed to damp subsynchronous oscillations. Eigenvalue analysis and transient simulations of detailed nonlinear system are considered to investigate the performance of the controller. Robustness of the controller has been analyzed by facing the system with disturbances leading to significant changes in generator operating point. Abstract: The impact of Static Var Compensator (SVC) on the apparent impedance seen by the transmission line distance relay is investigated in this paper. Analytical results are presented and verified by detailed simulations. It is shown that the connection type of the windings of the shunt coupling transformer of the SVC has a remarkable effect on the apparent impedance seen by the distance relay. Six different phase to phase and phase to ground measuring units of the distance relay are simulated to resemble the behavior of the relay. The impact of SVC is more pronounced on the apparent impedance seen by the phase to ground fault measuring units than the others as is shown by the results. Simulation results include different power system operating conditions, SVC control system settings and different fault-type scenarios. The impact of SVC on the relay tripping boundaries is also clearly demonstrated. Background: Atherosclerosis is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in end stage renal diseases (ESRD), especially in hemodialysis (HD) patients. In addition the classic risk factors for atherosclerosis, non classical risk factors, such as high lipid peroxidation and low antioxidants, also, are culprit in the pathogenesis. Method: We tested lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant levels in forty five stable hyperlipidemic HD males (age range 40-60 years) before, after 45 and 90 days of prescription of 20 mg/day Lovastatin for three months. Malondialdehyde (MDA), as prototype of lipid peroxidation, and total antioxidants (TA) were measured by flourimetric and spectrophotometric assays, respectively. Results: Serum triglyceride (Tg) (213.7 ± 112.4 mg/dl vs. 153.4 ± 54.8 mg/dl p = 0.003), serum cholesterol (C) (185.8 ± 48.3 mg/dl vs. 149.3 ± 37.8 mg/dl, p = 0.014), LDL-C (120.1 mg/dl ± 48.9 vs. 84.8 ± 43.7 mg/d, p = 0.001), VLDL-C (40.7 ± 18.9 mg/dl vs. 30.7 ± 10.9 mg/dl, p = 0.025), MDA (13.1 ± 3.5 nmol/ml vs. 1.27 ± 1 nmol/ml, p = 0.00), TA (0.98 ± 0.17 mmol/l vs. 1.28 ± 0.27 mmol/l, p = 0.001) and HDL (24.9+11.1 mg/dl vs. 31.4 ± 7.7 mg/dl, p = 0.007) significantly were changed by 3 months of Lovastatin therapy. These changes for HDL, VLDL and Tg after the 3 months were more obvious than 45 days of Lovastatin therapy. Conclusion: In HD patients serum lipids and their oxidations are increased. To address the above problem, a non-pilot protection scheme based on the accurate fault location estimation is proposed. When a fault occurs at the end section of the line, after the fast remote circuit breaker (RCB) operation, the accurate amount of fault current can be obtained. Using this current, the accurate fault location is calculated, and as a result, the accelerated trip can be issued to the local circuit breaker (CB) for the faults occurring at all the total line length including the end section faults. In this work, a new elevator system created by a linear switched reluctance motor is presented. Unlike conventional linear motors, the proposed linear motor has more than one translator. Each phase in a translator generates a pulsing force; hence, the total generated force has noticeable ripple making it difficult to soft motion. In order to solve this problem, similar phases in different translators have been located in positions with specified distances together. As a result, similar force pulses would be shifted so that they can compensate together. An appropriate control strategy has been designed for the system, which can control the current, force, speed, and position simultaneously. A conventional proportional–integral controller and an adaptive fuzzy controller have been used to control the speed. In order to have a precise study, a prototype elevator system along with its control unit has been made and the obtained results have been compared with the simulation results. A new adaptive control strategy for a double‐sided linear switched reluctance motor is proposed in this work. Switched reluctance motors inherently have non‐linear dynamics that complicates their analysis and control. The Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy logic system has been used in this work to achieve an appropriate adaptive control system for the proposed linear motor. The fuzzy system has been heightened by non‐linear rule consequences and a time‐varying parameter. Updated laws have been designed to refresh the amount of the parameter consequently the suggested control system shows a stable performance in control of switched reluctance motors. The proposed control strategy is independent of the uncertainties of the motor dynamics and has an acceptable adaptability. This control method along with a conventional fuzzy logic based system have been studied on the proposed linear switched reluctance motor and their performances were compared in different performance conditions. This paper will investigate wavelet packet transform of acoustic emission (AE) signal processing in order to identify failure mechanisms of unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites. For this purpose, carbon/epoxy composites were tested in tensile test by two different loading conditions. For the first specimen, the load was applied through fiber direction (T0) and for the second specimen, the load was applied perpendicular to the fiber direction (T90), AE signals were collected during experimental test procedure and the signal's waveforms were decomposed into various wavelet levels that each includes details and approximations so-called. Each data is related to a specific frequency range. The results show that type and percentage of failure mechanisms in various loadings are different. In T0, four micro-failure mechanisms of matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and fiber breakage were observed and Fiber pull-out was determined as main inter-phase failure mechanism. To improve the limitation of conventional impedance-based methods, this paper presents a non-pilot accurate fault location element (FLE) for conventional distance relays in SCDCTL. The main concept of the proposed method is considering the proper Kirchhoff voltage law (KVL) loop in the negative-sequence circuit of SCDCTL. Consideration of the shunt capacitances of lines ensures accuracy of the achieved fault location formula. Characterization of poultry microbiota is becoming increasingly important due to the growing need for microbiome-based interventions to improve poultry health and production performance. However, the lack of standardized protocols for sampling, sample processing, DNA extraction, sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis can hinder data comparison between studies. Here, we investigated how the DNA extraction process affects microbial community compositions and diversity metrics in different chicken respiratory sample types including choanal and tracheal swabs, nasal cavity and tracheal washes, and lower respiratory lavage. We did a side-by-side comparison of the performances of Qiagen DNeasy blood and tissue (BT) and ZymoBIOMICS DNA Miniprep (ZB) kits. In general, samples extracted with the BT kit yielded higher concentrations of total DNA while those extracted with the ZB kit contained higher numbers of bacterial 16S rRNA gene copies per unit volume. Therefore, the samples were normalized to equal amounts of 16S rRNA gene copies prior to sequencing. For each sample type, all predominant bacterial taxa detected in samples extracted with one kit were present in replicate samples extracted with the other kit and did not show significant differences at the class level. However, a few differentially abundant shared taxa were observed at family and genus levels. Furthermore, between-kit differences in alpha and beta diversity metrics at the amplicon sequence variant level were statistically indistinguishable. Communities of gut bacteria (microbiota) are known to play roles in resistance to pathogen infection and optimal weight gain in turkey flocks. However, knowledge of turkey respiratory microbiota and its link to gut microbiota is lacking. This study presents a 16S rRNA gene-based census of the turkey respiratory microbiota (nasal cavity and trachea) alongside gut microbiota (cecum and ileum) in two identical commercial Hybrid Converter turkey flocks raised in parallel under typical field commercial conditions. The flocks were housed in adjacent barns during the brood stage and in geographically separated farms during the grow-out stage. Several bacterial taxa, primarily Staphylococcus, that were acquired in the respiratory tract at the beginning of the brood stage persisted throughout the flock cycle. Late-emerging predominant taxa in the respiratory tract included Deinococcus and Corynebacterium. Tracheal and nasal microbiota of turkeys were identifiably distinct from one another and from gut microbiota. Nevertheless, gut and respiratory microbiota changed in parallel over time and appeared to share many taxa. During the brood stage, the two flocks generally acquired similar gut and respiratory microbiota, and their average body weights were comparable. However, there were qualitative and quantitative differences in microbial profiles and body weight gain trajectories after the flocks were transferred to geographically separated grow-out farms. Lower weight gain corresponded to the emergence of Deinococcus and Ornithobacterium in the respiratory tract and Fusobacterium and Parasutterella in gut. Development of a broadly reactive influenza vaccine that can provide protection against emerging type A influenza viruses is a big challenge. We previously demonstrated that a vaccine displaying the extracellular domain of the matrix protein 2 (M2e) on the surface loops of norovirus P-particle (M2eP) can partially protect chickens against several subtypes of avian influenza viruses. In the current study, a chimeric vaccine containing a conserved peptide from the subunit 2 of hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein (HA2) and Arabidopsis thaliana cyanase protein (AtCYN) (HA2-AtCYN vaccine) was evaluated in 2-weeks-old chickens. Depending on the route of administration, the HA2-AtCYN vaccine was shown to induce various levels of HA2-specific IgA in tears as well as serum IgG, which were associated with partial protection of chickens against tracheal shedding of a low pathogenicity H5N2 challenge virus. Furthermore, intranasal administration with a combination of HA2-AtCYN and M2eP vaccines resulted in enhanced protection compared to each vaccine alone. Simultaneous intranasal administration of the vaccines did not interfere with secretory IgA induction by each vaccine. Additionally, significantly higher M2eP-specific proliferative responses were observed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of all M2eP-vaccinated groups when compared with the mock-vaccinated group. Although tripling the number of M2e copies did not enhance the protective efficacy of the chimeric vaccine, it significantly reduced immunodominance of P-particle epitopes without affecting the robustness of M2e-specific immune responses. Taken together, our data suggests that mucosal immunization of chickens with combinations of mechanistically different cross-subtype-conserved vaccines has the potential to enhance the protective efficacy against influenza virus challenge. The digestive and respiratory tracts of chickens are colonized by bacteria that are believed to play important roles in the overall health and performance of the birds. Most of the current research on the commensal bacteria (microbiota) of chickens has focused on broilers and gut microbiota, and less attention has been given to layers and respiratory microbiota. This research bias has left significant gaps in our knowledge of the layer microbiome. This study was conducted to define the core microbiota colonizing the upper respiratory tract (URT) and lower intestinal tract (LIT) in commercial layers under field conditions. One hundred eighty-one chickens were sampled from a flock of >80,000 birds at nine times to collect samples for 16S rRNA gene-based bacterial metabarcoding. Generally, the body site and age/farm stage had very dominant effects on the quantity, taxonomic composition, and dynamics of core bacteria. Remarkably, ileal and URT microbiota were compositionally more related to each other than to that from the cecum. Unique taxa dominated in each body site yet some taxa overlapped between URT and LIT sites, demonstrating a common core. The overlapping bacteria also contained various levels of several genera with well-recognized avian pathogens. Our findings suggest that significant interaction exists between gut and respiratory microbiota, including potential pathogens, in all stages of the farm sequence. The baseline data generated in this study can be useful for the development of effective microbiome-based interventions to enhance production performance and to prevent and control disease in commercial chicken layers. Objective: Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disease of the bones. Osteoporosis reduces bone density, predisposes a person to fractures, and imposes high costs on societies. Osteoporosis develops from a variety of causes, one of the most significant is vitamin D deficiency. This study investigates the impact of vitamin D on osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial, 400 patients referred to the Bone Density Clinic of Kowsar Hospital in Semnan were selected by convenience sampling method. Bone densitometry tests were carried out using DEXA (x-ray absorptiometry) and serum vitamin D levels were measured by the ELISA method. Subjects with vitamin D deficiency were treated for 8 weeks with (50,000 Vitamin D units per week. At the end of the treatment period, all subjects were evaluated for bone density and the results of both groups were compared. Results: 13% of subjects had osteoporosis and 14.2% had osteopenia. 19% of subjects had vitamin D deficiency, 38.8% had insufficient levels of vitamin D, and 42.3% had sufficient vitamin D levels. The level of vitamin D in patients with osteoporosis (5.50 ± 5.5 ng/ml) was less than those with osteopenia (7.83 ± 4.8 ng/ml) and those with normal bone mineral density (23.88 ± 18.42 ng/ml) (P <0.001). The prevalence of osteoporosis in the intervention group after intervention with vitamin D was significantly lower than the control group (32.3 versus 67.7 and P <0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of serum vitamin D deficiency in osteopenic and osteoporotic individuals was higher than in normal subjects, with a significant relationship between age and sex. Outbreaks of novel highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses have been reported in poultry species in the United States since 2014. These outbreaks have proven the limitations of biosecurity control programs, and new tools are needed to reinforce the current avian influenza control arsenal. Some enzootic countries have implemented inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) in their control programs, but there are serious concerns that a long-term use of IIV without eradication may result in the selection of novel antigenically divergent strains. A broadly protective vaccine is needed, such as live-attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). We showed in our previous studies that pc4-LAIV (a variant that encodes a C-terminally truncated NS1 protein) can provide significant protection against heterologous challenge virus in chickens vaccinated at 2–4 weeks of age through upregulation of innate and adaptive immune responses. The current study was conducted to compare the performances of pc4-LAIV and IIV in young chickens vaccinated at 1 day of age. A single dose of pc4-LAIV was able to induce stronger innate and mucosal IgA responses and protect young immunologically immature chickens better than a single dose of IIV. Most importantly, when 1-day-old chickens were intranasally primed with pc4-LAIV and subcutaneously boosted with IIV three weeks later, they showed a rapid, robust, and highly cross-reactive serum antibody response and a high level of mucosal IgA antibody response. Single-ended phasor based methods are a category of fault location strategies which are favourable due to simplicity of their implementation. However, enhancing the accuracy of these methods is a challenging task due to unavailability of data from the remote end of the line. In this paper, a novel fault location method that requires the measured data of one end of the line is proposed. As a result, this method does not need communication links. The proposed method is bi-level and in its first level, fault characteristics such as current, voltage, and impedance of the fault are calculated for a given fault location obtained from Level-2. Then, based on the calculated fault characteristics, fault location is updated in the second level. The presented fault location method considers magnetic coupling between lines and it is also applicable for both transposed and un-transposed lines. Numerous simulation studies verify the accuracy of the proposed method in presence of uncertainties such as noise, fault impedance and error in input line parameters.
