Abstract

This paper studies the properties of a new class of file organizations (CRWR) where records relevant to every query are stored in consecutive storage locations but the organizations contain redundancy. Some theorems which provide tools for reducing redundancy in CRWR organizations have been also developed. Redundancies obtained by the application of these theorems are compared with that of query-inverted file organizations. The consecutive retrieval property is an important relation between a query set and record set. Its existence enables the design of an information retrieval system with a minimal search time and no redundant storage. Some important theorems on the consecutive retrieval property are proved in this paper. Conditions under which the consecutive retrieval property exists and remain invariant have been established. Abstract

This paper extends Codd's relational view to represent statistical data and to achieve the efficient analysis of statistical data. It discusses why the relational calculus has not been popular with statisticians. A new view called a statistical relational table is presented, to meet the needs of the statisticians. Some of Codd's relational operators are extended to the statistical relational tables. New operators, based on the statistical relational tables, are introduced for communicating requests for statistical analysis. A new query language, called the query-by-statistical-relational-table (which has some similarities with query-by-example), is introduced. Extensions of SQL language for processing the commands of the new query language are also discussed. Creation and storage of metadata for fast statistical analysis are considered. This paper discusses some applications of statistical and database techniques for integrating tests in manufacturing products. It shows how statistical databases can be used for automatically controlling a manufacturing process in real time. Some new statistical methods of manufacturing testing, e.g., test-compression, testing-by- sampling, testing-by-factorial-design, are discussed. Abstract

This paper discusses the roles and challenges for statisticians in statistical data base management. It discusses the difference between statistical data model and the category‐numeric data model used in statistical data base management. It shows how some numerical operations, commonly used in statistical analysis can be combined with relational operations of data base management to improve the performance of statistical analysis using data base management. Some of the operations discussed are : flelxible multivariate structures, selection domains, domain joins, domain ordering, tuple ordering, domain union, domain intersections, outer joins of domains, etc.

23. Estimating the Mean by Two-Stage Sampling with Replacement

Abstract

In two-stage sampling when sampling is done with replacement at each stage, a better estimate of the population mean can be obtained by considering the distinct units only at each stage. The mean of the distinct uniss is chosen as the desired estimate and an exact expression for the variance is obtained. A sufficient condition for the variance of the estimate based on distinct units to be smaller than the variance of the usual estimate of a two-stage sample based on all units is given.
