In clinical psychology and psychiatry, personality is usually assessed using questionnaires developed through factor analysis (FA). Essential domains are identified, which correspond to questions/items defining a (sub)scale, and each question is rigidly assigned to one scale, giving the item the same meaning regardless of how the respondent may interpret it. However, this rigidity might hinder the instrument’s assessment capability. We tested this hypothesis using the Attachment-Caregiving Questionnaire (ACQ), a clinical and personality self-report that—through extra-scale information—allows the clinician to infer the possible different meanings that the subjects attribute to the items. Considering four psychotherapy patients, we compared the scoring of their ACQs provided by expert clinicians to the detailed information gained from therapy and the patients. Our results indicated that questions could be interpreted differently—receiving the same score for different (clinically relevant) reasons—potentially impacting personality assessment and clinical decision-making. Moreover, accounting for multiple interpretations requires a specific questionnaire design. Overall, our analysis suggests that a meaning-sensitive, personalized read of a personality self-report may improve profiling and treatment, implying the necessity of more advanced pattern recognition than the one produced by FA or similarly rigid methods, which artificial intelligence may provide. More evidence is required to support these preliminary findings.

In the field of veterinary medicine, the detection of parasite eggs in the fecal samples of livestock animals represents one of the most challenging tasks, since their spread and diffusion may lead to severe clinical disease. Nowadays, the scanning procedure is typically performed by physicians with professional microscopes and requires a significant amount of time, domain knowledge, and resources. The Kubic FLOTAC Microscope (KFM) is a compact, low-cost, portable digital microscope that can autonomously analyze fecal specimens for parasites and hosts in both field and laboratory settings. It has been shown to acquire images that are comparable to those obtained with traditional optical microscopes, and it can complete the scanning and imaging process in just a few minutes, freeing up the operator's time for other tasks. To promote research in this area, the first AI-KFM challenge was organized, which focused on the detection of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in cattle using RGB images. The challenge aimed to provide a standardized experimental protocol with a large number of samples collected in a well-known environment and a set of scores for the approaches submitted by the competitors. This paper describes the process of generating and structuring the challenge dataset and the approaches submitted by the competitors, as well as the lessons learned throughout this journey.

Abstract Due to migration, terror‐threats and the viral pandemic, various EU member states have re‐established internal border control or even closed their borders. European Association for Biometrics (EAB), a non‐profit organisation, solicited the views of its members on ways which biometric technologies and services may be used to help with re‐establishing open borders within the Schengen area while at the same time mitigating any adverse effects. From the responses received, this position paper was composed to identify ideas to re‐establish free travel between the member states in the Schengen area. The paper covers the contending needs for security, open borders and fundamental rights as well as legal constraints that any technological solution must consider. A range of specific technologies for direct biometric recognition alongside complementary measures are outlined. The interrelated issues of ethical and societal considerations are also highlighted. Provided a holistic approach is adopted, it may be possible to reach a more optimal trade‐off with regards to open borders while maintaining a high‐level of security and protection of fundamental rights. European Association for Biometrics and its members can play an important role in fostering a shared understanding of security and mobility challenges and their solutions.

Abstract Electroencephalography (EEG)‐based personal recognition in realistic contexts is still a matter of research, with the following issues to be clarified: (1) the duration of the signal length, called ‘epoch’, which must be very short for practical purposes and (2) the contribution of EEG sub‐bands. These two aspects are connected because the shorter the epoch’s duration, the lower the contribution of the low‐frequency sub‐bands while enhancing the high‐frequency sub‐bands. However, it is well known that the former characterises the inner brain activity in resting or unconscious states. These sub‐bands could be of no use in the wild, where the subject is conscious and not in the condition to put himself in a resting‐state‐like condition. Furthermore, the latter may concur much better in the process, characterising normal subject activity when awake. This study aims at clarifying the problems mentioned above by proposing a novel personal recognition architecture based on extremely short signal fragments called ‘patches’, subdividing each epoch. Patches are individually classified. A ‘qualified majority’ of classified patches allows taking the final decision. It is shown by experiments that this approach (1) can be adopted for practical purposes and (2) clarifies the sub‐bands’ role in contexts still implemented in vitro but very similar to that conceivable in the wild.

Bullying and cyberbullying are harmful social phenomena that involve the intentional, repeated use of power to intimidate or harm others. The ramifications of these actions are felt not just at the individual level but also pervasively throughout society, necessitating immediate attention and practical solutions. The BullyBuster project pioneers a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques with psychological models to comprehensively understand and combat these issues. In particular, employing AI in the project allows the automatic identification of potentially harmful content by analyzing linguistic patterns and behaviors in various data sources, including photos and videos. This timely detection enables alerts to relevant authorities or moderators, allowing for rapid interventions and potential harm mitigation. This paper, a culmination of previous research and advancements, details the potential for significantly enhancing cyberbullying detection and prevention by focusing on the system’s design and the novel application of AI classifiers within an integrated framework. Our primary aim is to evaluate the feasibility and applicability of such a framework in a real-world application context. The proposed approach is shown to tackle the pervasive issue of cyberbullying effectively.

The problem of interoperability is still open in fingerprint presentation attack detection (PAD) systems. This involves costs for designers and manufacturers who intend to change sensors of personal recognition systems or design multi-sensor systems, because they need to obtain sensor-specific spoofs and retrain the system. The solutions proposed in the state of the art to mitigate the problem still require data from the target sensor and are therefore not exempt from the problem of obtaining new data. In this paper, we provide insights for the design of PAD systems thanks to an overview of an interoperability analysis on modern systems: hand-crafted, deep-learning-based, and hybrid. We investigated realistic use cases to determine the pros and cons of training with data from multiple sensors compared to training with single sensor data, and drafted the main guidelines to follow for deciding the most convenient PAD design technique depending on the intended use of the fingerprint identification/authentication system.

Multimedia data manipulation and forgery has never been easier than today, thanks to the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI-generated fake content, commonly called Deepfakes, have been raising new issues and concerns, but also new challenges for the research community. The Deepfake detection task has become widely addressed, but unfortunately, approaches in the literature suffer from generalization issues. In this paper, the Face Deepfake Detection and Reconstruction Challenge is described. Two different tasks were proposed to the participants: (i) creating a Deepfake detector capable of working in an “in the wild” scenario; (ii) creating a method capable of reconstructing original images from Deepfakes. Real images from CelebA and FFHQ and Deepfake images created by StarGAN, StarGAN-v2, StyleGAN, StyleGAN2, AttGAN and GDWCT were collected for the competition. The winning teams were chosen with respect to the highest classification accuracy value (Task I) and “minimum average distance to Manhattan” (Task II). Deep Learning algorithms, particularly those based on the EfficientNet architecture, achieved the best results in Task I. No winners were proclaimed for Task II. A detailed discussion of teams’ proposed methods with corresponding ranking is presented in this paper.

Deepfake detection is of fundamental importance to preserve the reliability of multimedia communications. Modern deepfake detection systems are often specialized on one or more types of manipulation but are not able to generalize. On the other hand, when properly designed, ensemble learning and fusion techniques can reduce this issue. In this paper, we exploit the complementarity of different individual classifiers and evaluate which fusion rules are best suited to increase the generalization capacity of modern deepfake detection systems. We also give some insights to designers for selecting the most appropriate approach.
