To meet the Paris Agreement targets, in addition to rapid emission reductions, carbon dioxide needs to be removed from the atmosphere with Negative Emission Technologies (NETs). On one hand, these solutions seem promising; on the other hand, they have significant and poorly estimated uncertainties and risks related to their potential to remove atmospheric carbon and wider impacts on the Earth system. One previously largely unexplored aspect of NETs is whether the uncertainty in NETs and e.g. transient climate response to cumulative CO2 emissions (TCRE) are coupled to any degree, e.g. could some NETs have lower carbon removal potential if TCRE is high. We estimate how TCRE and selected NETs’ carbon removal potential are dependent on climate system parameters using Perturbed Parameter Ensemble (PPE) with the University of Victoria Earth System Climate Model (UVic ESCM) and Gaussian Process (GP) emulator. Our aim is to explore and quantify any potential correlation between the carbon removal potential of single NETs and TCRE. The NETs considered are afforestation, reforestation, ocean alkalinization, ocean iron fertilization and direct air capture, which all except the last one depend on the perturbed parameters. The parameters of interest are chosen according to their expected impact on the climate and carbon uptake, constrained according to observations, and perturbed based on their prior probability distribution functions (PDFs). Then, to explore the parameter’s space, we use GP emulators to estimate model outputs as surrogate of actual ESM runs, which would be computationally too expensive. The emulators are created for the preindustrial spin-up, historical period, future control scenario and one for each NET scenario. They are trained through 300 simulations, considering 20 perturbed parameters. This analysis yields the correlation between the carbon removal potential of each NET and TCRE, and the contribution of each perturbed parameter to these two metrics. The preliminary results from the 300-member ensemble give a mean TCRE of 1.63 °C/1000 PgC, which is consistent with the best estimate of 1.65 °C/1000 PgC reported by the IPCC AR6 WGI (2021). The simulations with a high TCRE also tended to have a high ocean iron fertilization’s potential, meaning that some NETs are potentially more effective in removing atmospheric carbon dioxide if the temperature change per cumulative carbon dioxide emissions is high. Identifying such correlations between TCRE and NETs’ potential allows designing more robust mitigation strategies including portfolios of NETs that hedge against high TCRE.

The intention-behavior gap exposes the pressing demand for more studies to investigate consumers’ behavior toward organic fisheries foods in developing contexts owing to the growing demand for these foods. Additionally, while most research exploits heavily the beneficial effects of organic foods, very few probe the potential risk counterpart. The present study, thus, aims to contribute to the existing gap by examining how risk plays out in the provided context. Besides core factors borrowed from the seminal Theory of Planned Behavior, consumers’ intention and stated behavior can be explained through the influence of perceived risk, past behavior, and their habits. The Structural Equation Modeling method was utilized to analyze the data of 202 participants from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Findings revealed that, for consumers with prior organic shopping experience and repetitive buying habits, perceived risk is less likely to render an impact on their intentions to buy. In the absence of habits and past experience, consumers’ attitudes and intentions are barricaded by the potential risks perceived. Further details and multiple implications were also discussed.

The research aims to explore consumers’ intention toward traceable food in the dual context of the animal disease outbreak (i.e. African Swine Fever - ASF) and the current food safety issues. An extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model was used to predict purchase intention/attitude toward traceable pork. The study employed the structural equation modeling (SEM) to extract insights from the dataset of 230 students in Vietnam. The current detrimental context of food safety deemed promoting the consumption of traceable food, a risk-mitigating alternative. Healthy and environmentally responsible consumers held positive standpoints toward traceable pork as a solution to fulfill their responsibility with the environment and healthy eating lifestyle. The extended model was promising in explaining 52% of the variance of the purchase intention. The study confirmed both the positive impacts of the long-lasting unsafe food issues and the short-term animal disease outbreak on intention toward traceable food. To promote traceable food, industry food marketers should tailor their marketing and communication strategies to target healthy and responsible eaters.

Purpose. The aim of this paper is to explain a consumers’ intention for traceable food in the context of the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, in order to provide scientific knowledge for the government’s intervention to mitigate the perceived risk and to promote the development of traceable food. Methodology. This research employed an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) model in predicting purchase intention/attitude toward traceable pork. The structural equation analysis (SEM) was used on a sample of 230 students in Vietnam. Findings. The current context of food safety issues, as well as animal disease outbreak, is beneficial to direct consumption toward traceable products. Heterogeneous impacts of trust were confirmed on how consumers perceived risks associated with the ASF outbreak. Consumers’ habits of shopping places and looking for the product origin incite the positive attitude toward traceable pork. Food safety concerns also promoted a positive purchase attitude. Originality/Value. The study’s objective is first to equip knowledge regarding the consumers’ intention toward traceable food under the impact of animal disease, particularly in the context of food safety issues in Vietnam. Extended knowledge promotes tailored policies to regain consumers’ confidence and facilitate the development of traceable food.
