Abstract

The evolution of mobility in a sustainable perspective requires specific attention to the end-users roles and the changing needs of the cities and policies. This work shows how ICT (Information and Communications Technology) services can allow the transition towards smart and sustainable mobility. Within the European project H2020 ELVITEN (GA nr. 769926), a proper set of ICT services are described, including the brokering and the booking service for vehicles and charging stations, the ICT platform for monitoring the fleet of electric vehicles, the serious game app and a smart app for incentives. These services are suitable and indispensable to incentivize and encourage users towards a new mobility that is electric and sustainable.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prophylactic efficacy of aspirin and a high-dose antioxidant vitamin combination in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in terms of reduction of the risk of a first vascular event (myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular death) and critical limb ischaemia. DESIGN: Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial with 2 x 2 factorial design. SETTING: Thirty-seven European angiology/vascular medicine units. SUBJECTS: A total of 366 outpatients with stage I-II PAD documented by angiography or ultrasound, with ankle/brachial index

Abstract

Photoelectric properties of new type conjugated polymer-semiconductor nanocrystals hybrid solar cells were investigated. Dependencies of charge carrier generation, mobility and recombination on composition of samples and the way how the samples were prepared were evaluated by using ultrafast time-resolved fluorescence, transient photocurrent and delayed collection field techniques. The combination of several investigation techniques enabled to distinguish and investigate three processes determining solar cell efficiency: charge carrier generation, carrier recombination and extraction. Charge carrier generation was found to be limited by relatively slow electron transfer from photoexcited polymer to PbS nanoparticles, but this process was determined being independent of the electric field strength. Carrier recombination and extraction rates strongly depend on the PbS nanoparticle concentration and determine the extraction efficiency. Efficient carrier extraction at short circuit conditions is possible only in chemically and thermally treated samples with high PbS nanoparticle concentration.

28. MMP-9 microsatellite polymorphism and susceptibility to exudative form of age-related macular degeneration

Abstract

PURPOSE: To assess if a polymorphism (PM) of the microsatellite (CA(13-27)) in the promoter region of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) was associated with the exudative form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to its risk factors.METHODS: In 107 patients with AMD (AMD Group) and 223 age- and gender-matched controls (Control Group) with cataract, demographic, clinical data, and MMP-9 PM have been compared.RESULTS: The comparison of allelic frequencies showed a different pattern of CA repeats between AMD and Control Group (P < 0.00005), in particular the prevalence of longer microsatellites (> or = 22 CA repeats) was higher in AMD than in Control Group (O.R. 2.49, 95% CI 1.71-3.37, P < 0.001). Analyses of genetic frequencies gave similar results. Logistic regression confirmed that 22 or more CA repeats are associated to AMD. The only association between MMP-9 PM and other risk factors for AMD was with BMI (Spearman's R = 0.298, P < 0.00005): all patients with both microsatellites > or = 22 CA repeats were overweight or obese (chi2 test P < 0.0005, compared to other genotypes).CONCLUSIONS: Longer microsatellites in the promoter of MMP-9 are associated to the exudative form of AMD and to body mass index, a well-known risk factor for the disease.

Abstract

Aim. Matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) and 9 (MMP-9) are alleged to influence atherosclerotic plaques evolution, vulnerability (tendency to rupture), and development of vascular events. MMPs expression depends on environmental stimuli and functional (i.e. determining differential gene expression) genetic polymorphisms (PM). This study evaluates the relationship between MMP PM and carotid plaque features of vulnerability. Methods. Histopathological traits of plaque instability (plaque and lipid core size, fibrous cap thickness, erosion, thrombosis, macrophages, smooth muscle cells [SMC], and elastic fibers content) have been determined in 31 carotid plaques obtained from thromboendarterectomy and then compared according to a genetic MMP-1 PM (rs1799750, G insertion/deletion at -1607) and MMP-9 PM (rs3222264, CA microsatellite around -90) of the carrier patients. Results. Carriers of MMP-1 G insertion have, on average, a smaller plaque and a thicker fibrous cap (standardized by plaque size) with higher SMC and elastic fibers content. Carriers of more than 21 repeats in MMP-9 microsatellite have plaques with larger lipid core. Conclusions. In carotid plaques, a MMP-1 genetic variant accounting for higher expression is associated with histopathology signs of less vulnerable plaques, while MMP-9 genotypes increasing expression are associated with a trait of plaque vulnerability. MMP-1 and MMP-9 can have an opposite role, protective for the former, causative for the latter, in determining atherosclerotic plaque evolution.

Abstract

Calciphylaxis is a rare, but potentially life-threatening condition usually observed in patients with end-stage chronic renal disease and characterized by small- and medium-sized blood vessel calcification leading to tissue ischemia. The clinical features are primarily cutaneous, consisting of skin necrosis and ulceration, mostly located in the lower extremities. We report a case of a 56-year-old woman with a previous history of renal disease and atypical lobular hyperplasia of the right breast, who developed painful skin necrosis on both breasts. Differential diagnosis comprises acute bacterial infection with ulceration, cutaneous vasculitis, cancer and calciphylaxis.

41. Leaf-Nets (LN): A New Quantitative Method for Sampling Macroinvertebrates in Non-Wadeable Streams and Rivers.

Abstract

The ecological knowledge of large rivers is still scarce or highly fragmented mainly because of complex, laborious and expensive procedures to collect informative samples from the benthic biota. Standard sampling protocols for macroinvertebrates were mainly developed and calibrated for wadeable streams, while a number of heterogeneous non-standard sampling procedures are available for large rivers. We propose the new, easy-to-build and cost-effective leaf-nets (LN) method to quantitatively sample benthic invertebrates in non-wadeable waterways. The LN method uses Phragmites australis leaves as substrate and combines the characteristics of the leaf-bags and the Hester-Dendy (HD) multiplates methods. We compared the effectiveness of the LN and HD methods in a near-pristine and in an impacted stream-reach (downstream an aquaculture plant) of a non-wadeable second-order stream of Central Apennines (Italy). Twenty-five of the 34 cumulatively collected macroinvertebrate taxa were common to both methods, while seven taxa were found only on LN and two only on HD. Taxonomic richness and total macroinvertebrate abundance were higher for LN assemblages. Number of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera taxa (EPT) also tended to be higher on LN. Assemblage composition was different on LN and HD. Both methods documented a significant decrease in EPT taxa and a concomitant increase in the total abundance of more pollution-tolerant taxa in the impacted stream-reach, but the LN method was more sensitive to impact-associated changes in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure. In contrast to the hardboard plates of HD, the assembled leaves of the LN may act as a direct or indirect food source and may better mimic the texture and composition of more heterogeneous natural substrates thus favouring the migration-colonization process from both bottom and littoral benthic invertebrates. The sampling efficiency, cost effectiveness and simplicity warrant the routine use of the new LN method in large-river ecological assessment. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
