6. Forecasts: Consumption, Production, and Behavioral Responses

Abstract

Scarce information and human capital may make it difficult for residents of developingcountries to produce accurate forecasts, limiting responses to uncertain future eventslike air pollution. We study two randomized interventions in Lahore, Pakistan: 1)provision of air pollution forecasts; 2) general training in forecasting. Both reducedsubjects’ own air pollution forecast errors; the training effect suggests that modesteducational interventions can durably improve forecasting skills. Forecast receiptincreased demand for protective masks and increased the responsiveness of outdoortime to pollution. Forecast recipients were willing to pay 60 percent of the cost ofmobile internet for continued access.

Abstract

We introduce natural deformation classes of generalized K\"ahler structures using the Courant symmetry group. We show that these yield natural extensions of the notions of K\"ahler class and K\"ahler cone to generalized K\"ahler geometry. Lastly we show that the generalized K\"ahler-Ricci flow preserves this generalized K\"ahler cone, and the underlying real Poisson tensor.

23. Where's the Harm? Screening Student Evaluations of Teaching for Offensive, Threatening or Distressing Comments

Abstract

Student evaluation surveys provide educational institutions with important feedback regarding the student experience of teaching and courses; however, qualitative comments can contain offensive, insulting or threatening content. Large educational institutions generate thousands of comments per academic term; therefore, manual screening processes to find potentially harmful comments are not generally feasible. We developed a methodology for semi-automated screening of student comments that incorporates a machine learning decision support system and a detailed psychological assessment protocol. In a case study at a large public Australian university, our system identified 4,258 out of 62,049 (6.9%) comments as potentially harmful and requiring further review. Feedback from stakeholders demonstrates that this methodology is useful in reducing staff workload and could be broadly applied to different settings.

Abstract

We analyze four-dimensional symplectic manifolds of type $X=S^1 \times M^3$ where $M^3$ is an open $3$-manifold admitting inequivalent fibrations leading to inequivalent symplectic structures on $X$. For the case where $M^3 \subset S^3$ is the complement of a $4$-component link constructed by McMullen-Taubes, we provide a general algorithm for computing the monodromy of the fibrations explicitly. We use this algorithm to show that certain inequivalent symplectic structures are distinguished by the dimensions of the primitive cohomologies of differential forms on $X$. We also calculate the primitive cohomologies on $X$ for a class of open $3$-manifolds that are complements of a family of fibered graph links in $S^3$. In this case, we show that there exist pairs of symplectic forms on $X$, arising from either equivalent or inequivalent pairs of fibrations on the link complement, that have different dimensions of the primitive cohomologies., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure

37. Extreme Temperatures and Time-Use in China

Abstract

How do people in developing countries respond to extreme temperatures? Using individual-level panel data over two decades and relying on plausibly exogenous variation in weather, we estimate how extreme temperatures affect time use in China. Extreme temperatures reduce time spent working, and this effect is largest for female farmers. Hot days reduce time spent by women on outdoor chores, but we find no such effects for men. Finally, hot days dramatically reduce time spent on childcare, reflecting large effects on home production. Taken together, our results suggest time use is an important margin of response to extreme temperatures.

Abstract

Ice-nucleating macromolecules (INMs) produced by plant pollen can nucleate ice at warm temperatures and may play an important role in weather- and climate-relevant cloud glaciation. INMs have also proved useful for mammalian cell and tissue model cryopreservation. The high ice nucleation (IN) activity of some INMs indicates an underlying biological function, either freezing tolerance or bioprecipitation-mediated dispersal. Here, using the largest study of pollen ice nucleation to date, we show that phylogenetic proximity, spermatophyte subdivision, primary growth biome, pollination season, primary pollination method, desiccation tolerance and native growth elevation do not account for the IN activity of INMs released from different plant species' pollen. The results suggest that these macromolecules are produced by plants for a purpose unrelated to ice nucleation and have an incidental ability to nucleate ice. This ability may have been adapted by some species for specific biological purposes, producing exceptional ice nucleators. Model organisms are widely used in research as accessible and convenient systems to study a particular area or question in biology. Traditionally only a handful of organisms have been widely studied, but modern research tools are enabling researchers to extend the set of model organisms to include less-studied and more unusual systems. This Forum highlights a range of 'non-model model organisms' as emerging systems for tackling questions across the whole spectrum of biology (and beyond), the opportunities and challenges, and the outlook for the future.
