BackgroundPeople with intellectual disabilities (IDs) face significant communication barriers when accessing health care services; they find it difficult to identify and describe conditions clearly enough to support practitioners in making an accurate diagnosis. In addition, medical professionals generally have little knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with ID, which may result in the use of consultation techniques that do not cater to their patients’ skills. ObjectiveThis review aims to identify and synthesize the literature on alternative and augmentative communication technologies that are used to support adults with mild ID during the exchange of information with medical practitioners. MethodsWe performed a scoping review of studies published in English that describe the technologies that are used to promote communication with patients with mild ID during medical consultations. The databases searched were PubMed, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar. A qualitative framework-based approach was used to synthesize the data and discern key recurring themes across the identified literature. ResultsOf the 1557 articles screened, 15 (0.96%) met our inclusion criteria. The bulk of the communication aids used focused on low-tech solutions, including patient passports, note-based prompts, Talking Mats, health diaries, and easy-read information sheets. Their influence on current practice ranged from advancing medical professionals’ knowledge of the health and communication needs of people with ID to increasing interagency collaboration, patient advocacy skills, and health promotion activities. The major barriers to the implementation of low-tech aids were a lack of portability and increased maintenance efforts. Only 3 studies explored the use of mobile apps to promote communication. Their findings indicated that high-tech solutions offer greater customization with regard to the accessibility and health care needs of people with ID. ConclusionsAlternative and augmentative communication technologies have the potential to increase the quality of care provided to patients with mild ID; however, little work has been carried out in this area. Greater emphasis must be placed on (high-tech) two-way communication aids that empower patients to become involved in decisions regarding their care. Quantitative evaluation methods should be used to discern the true benefits of such aids, and researchers should describe their study protocols in depth to promote replication and generalizability.

Real-time gas sensing based on wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) has been widely adopted for several gas sensing applications. It is attractive for its accurate, non-invasive, and fast determination of critical gas parameters such as concentration, temperature, and pressure. To implement real-time gas sensing, data acquisition and processing must be implemented to accurately extract harmonics of interest from transmitted laser signals. In this work, we present an FPGA-based data acquisition architecture with embedded processing capable of achieving both real-time and accurate gas detection. By leveraging real-time processing on-chip, we minimised the data transfer bandwidth requirement, hence enabling better resolution of data transferred for high-level processing. The proposed architecture has a significantly lower bandwidth requirement compared to both the conventional offline processing architecture and the standard I-Q architecture. Specifically, it is capable of reducing data transfer overhead by 25% compared to the standard I-Q method, and it only requires a fraction of the bandwidth needed by the offline processing architecture. The feasibility of the proposed architecture is demonstrated on a commercial off-the-shelf SoC board, where measurement results show that the proposed architecture has better accuracy compared to the standard I-Q demodulation architecture for the same signal bandwidth. Legitimacy is crucial for the effectiveness of leaders in the workplace. We investigate pathways by which authorities in the workplace gain legitimacy and how they differ by authority race. In addition to leaders' behaviors, subordinates' impressions of leaders' competence and warmth, stemming from those behaviors, impact their views of leader legitimacy. We further assess how the role of mediating impressions depends on the race of the authority enacting the behaviors. In an experimental vignette study, we manipulate the authority's actions (use of fair procedures and power benevolently) and race (Black/white) and measure perceived competence, warmth, and legitimacy. Results indicate that the effects of leader behaviors on legitimacy operate through impressions of competence and warmth. Moreover, authority race alters this pathway; behaviors operate through competence impressions for white managers and through warmth impressions for Black managers. It is estimated that over 125 billion heterogeneous and homogeneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be internet-connected by 2030. This significant increase will generate large data volumes, posing a global problem for Cloud–Fog computing infrastructures. The current literature uses synthetic data in the iFogSim2 simulation toolkit; however, this study bridges the gap using real-world data to reflect and address the real-world issue. Smart IoT device data are captured, compared, and evaluated in a fixed and scalable scenario at both the Cloud and Fog layers, demonstrating the improved benefits achievable in energy consumption, latency, and network bandwidth usage within a smart office building. Real-world IoT device data evaluation results demonstrate that Fog computing is more efficient than Cloud computing, with increased scalability and data volume in a fixed- and low-bandwidth smart building architecture. This indicates a direct correlation between the increase in devices and the increase in efficiency within a scalable scenario, while the fixed architecture overall shows the inverse due to the low device numbers used in this study. The results indicate improved energy savings and significant improvements of up to 84.41% and 38.95% in network latency and usage, respectively, within a fixed architecture, while scalability analysis demonstrates improvements up to 4%, 91.38% and 34.78% for energy, latency, and network usage, respectively. Fog computing improvements are limited within a fixed smart building architecture with relatively few IoT devices. Despite commonalities, the development of a broad range of approaches to rural development has sometimes produced hermetic language and values which is exacerbated by siloed scientific orientations. In this article, we provide a critical analysis of three popular approaches to rural development among Global North rural researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers: the community-based approach, the place-based approach, and the territorial approach. By locating the disciplinary origins and pragmatic boundaries of each approach as well as the interfaces between them, we argue that working across a potential conceptual nexus could foster collaboration among policy-makers, practitioners, and researchers alike. Our analysis points to shared interests in issues of governance, actors agency and geographical embeddedness; it highlights a shared emphasis on rural defined interests. We conclude future rural development research and practice could be rejuvenated by working at the nexus of these interfaces to achieve the goals of contemporary rural development initiatives.
