The localization of multiple signal sources using sensor arrays has been a long-standing research challenge. While numerous solutions have been developed, signal space methods like MUSIC and ESPRIT have gained widespread popularity. As sensor arrays grow in size, sources are frequently located in the near-field region. The standard MUSIC algorithm can be adapted to locate these sources by performing a 3D search over both the distance and the angles of arrival (AOA), including azimuth and elevation, though this comes with significant computational complexity. To address this, a modified version of MUSIC has been developed to decouple the AoA and distance, enabling sequential estimation of these parameters and reducing computational demands. However, this approach suffers from reduced accuracy. To maintain the accuracy of MUSIC while minimizing complexity, this paper proposes a novel method that exploits angular variation across the array aperture, eliminating the need for a grid search over distance. The proposed method divides the large aperture into smaller sections, with each focusing on estimating the angles of arrival. These angles are then triangulated to localize the sources in the near-field of the large aperture. Numerical simulations show that this approach not only surpasses the Modified MUSIC algorithm in terms of mean absolute error but also achieves accuracy comparable to standard MUSIC, all while greatly reducing computational complexity-370 times in our simulation scenario.

Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) require innovative approaches to modeling channel and interference dynamics, extending beyond traditional average estimates to encompass entire statistical distributions, including rare and extreme events that challenge achieving ultra-reliability performance regions. In this paper, we propose a risk-sensitive approach based on extreme value theory (EVT) to predict the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for efficient resource allocation in URLLC systems. We employ EVT to estimate the statistics of rare and extreme interference values, and kernel density estimation (KDE) to model the distribution of non-extreme events. Using a mixture model, we develop an interference prediction algorithm based on quantile prediction, introducing a confidence level parameter to balance reliability and resource usage. While accounting for the risk sensitivity of interference estimates, the prediction outcome is then used for appropriate resource allocation of a URLLC transmission under link outage constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art first-order discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) approach by reducing outage rates up to 100-fold, achieving target outage probabilities as low as \(10^{-7}\). Simultaneously, it minimizes radio resource usage \(\simnot15 \%\) compared to DTMC, while remaining only \(\simnot20 \%\) above the optimal case with perfect interference knowledge, resulting in significantly higher prediction accuracy. This paper explores the potential of aerial reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (ARIS) to enhance coordinated multi-point non-orthogonal multiple access (CoMP-NOMA) networks. We consider a system model where a UAV-mounted RIS assists in serving multiple users through NOMA while coordinating with multiple base stations. The optimization of UAV trajectory, RIS phase shifts, and NOMA power control constitutes a complex problem due to the hybrid nature of the parameters, involving both continuous and discrete values. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel framework utilizing the multi-output proximal policy optimization (MO-PPO) algorithm. MO-PPO effectively handles the diverse nature of these optimization parameters, and through extensive simulations, we demonstrate its effectiveness in achieving near-optimal performance and adapting to dynamic environments. Through the lens of average and peak age-of-information (AoI), this paper takes a fresh look into the uplink medium access solutions for mission-critical (MC) communication coexisting with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) service. Considering the stochastic packet arrivals from an MC user, we study three access schemes: orthogonal multiple access (OMA) with eMBB preemption (puncturing), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), the latter two both with concurrent eMBB transmissions. Puncturing is found to reduce both average AoI and peak AoI (PAoI) violation probability but at the expense of decreased eMBB user rates and increased signaling complexity. Conversely, NOMA and RSMA offer higher eMBB rates but may lead to MC packet loss and AoI degradation. The paper systematically investigates the conditions under which NOMA or RSMA can closely match the average AoI and PAoI violation performance of puncturing while maintaining data rate gains. Closed-form expressions for average AoI and PAoI violation probability are derived, and conditions on the eMBB and MC channel gain difference with respect to the base station are analyzed. Additionally, optimal power and rate splitting factors in RSMA are determined through an exhaustive search to minimize MC outage probability. The emerging mission-critical Internet of Things (IoT) play a vital role in remote healthcare, haptic interaction, and industrial automation, where timely delivery of status updates is crucial. The Age of Information (AoI) is an effective metric to capture and evaluate information freshness at the destination. A system design based solely on the optimization of the average AoI might not be adequate to capture the requirements of mission-critical applications, since averaging eliminates the effects of extreme events. In this paper, we introduce a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based algorithm to improve AoI in mission-critical IoT applications. The objective is to minimize an AoI-based metric consisting of the weighted sum of the average AoI and the probability of exceeding an AoI threshold. We utilize the actor-critic method to train the algorithm to achieve optimized scheduling policy to solve the formulated problem. The performance of our proposed method is evaluated in a simulated setup and the results show a significant improvement in terms of the average AoI and the AoI violation probability compared to the related-work.

After robust connectivity, precise positioning is evolving into an innovative component of 5G service offerings for industrial use-cases and verticals with challenging indoor radio environments. In this direction, the 3GPP Rel-16 standard has been a tipping point in specifying critical innovations, followed by enhancements in Rel-17 and Rel-18. In this article, we elaborate on the 5G positioning framework, measurements, and procedures before shifting the focus mainly to recently identified carrier-phase (CP) measurements in Rel-18 as a complementary measure for time- and angular-based positioning methods. We discuss the associated challenges and potential solutions for exploiting CP, including integer ambiguity, multipath sensitivity, and signaling aspects. Delay and Age-of-Information (AoI) are two crucial performance metrics for emerging time-sensitive applications in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In order to achieve optimal performance, studying the inherent interplay between these two parameters in non-trivial task. In this work, we consider a Device-to-Device (D2D)-based heterogeneous IIoT network that supports two types of traffic flows, namely AoI-orientated. First, we introduce a distributed backlog-aware random access protocol that allows the AoI-orientated nodes to opportunistically access the channel based on the queue occupancy of the delay-oriented node. Then, we develop an analytical framework to evaluate the average delay and the average AoI, and formulate an optimization problem to minimize the AoI under a given delay constraint. Finally, we provide numerical results to demonstrate the impact of different network parameters on the performance in terms of the average delay and the average AoI. We also give the numerical solutions of the optimal parameters that minimize the AoI subject to a delay constraint.

Industry 5.0 vision, a step toward the next industrial revolution and enhancement to Industry 4.0, envisioned the new goals of resilient, sustainable, and human-centric approaches in diverse emerging applications, e.g., factories-of-the-future, digital society. The vision seeks to leverage human intelligence and creativity in nexus with intelligent, efficient, and reliable cognitive collaborating robots (cobots) to achieve zero waste, zerodefect, and mass customization-based manufacturing solutions. However, the vision requires the merging of cyber-physical worlds through utilizing Industry 5.0 technological enablers, e.g., cognitive cobots, person-centric artificial intelligence (AI), cyberphysical systems, digital twins, hyperconverged data storage and computing, communication infrastructure, and others. In this regard, the convergence of the emerging computational intelligence (CI) paradigm and next-generation wireless networks (NGWNs) can fulfill the stringent communication and computation requirements of the technological enablers in the Industry 5.0 vision, which is the aim of this survey-based tutorial. In this article, we address this issue by reviewing and analyzing current emerging concepts and technologies, e.g., CI tools and frameworks, network-in-box architecture, open radio access networks, softwarized service architectures, potential enabling services, and others, essential for designing the objectives of CINGWNs to fulfill the Industry 5.0 vision requirements. Finally, we provide a list of lessons learned from our detailed review, research challenges, and open issues that should be addressed in CI-NGWNs to realize Industry 5.0.

By amalgamating recent communication and control technologies, computing and data analytics techniques, and modular manufacturing, Industry~4.0 promotes integrating cyber-physical worlds through cyber-physical systems (CPS) and digital twin (DT) for monitoring, optimization, and prognostics of industrial processes. A DT is an emerging but conceptually different construct than CPS. Like CPS, DT relies on communication to create a highly-consistent, synchronized digital mirror image of the objects or physical processes. DT, in addition, uses built-in models on this precise image to simulate, analyze, predict, and optimize their real-time operation using feedback. DT is rapidly diffusing in the industries with recent advances in the industrial Internet of things (IIoT), edge and cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced data analytics. However, the existing literature lacks in identifying and discussing the role and requirements of these technologies in DT-enabled industries from the communication and computing perspective. In this article, we first present the functional aspects, appeal, and innovative use of DT in smart industries. Then, we elaborate on this perspective by systematically reviewing and reflecting on recent research in next-generation (NextG) wireless technologies (e.g., 5G and beyond networks), various tools (e.g., age of information, federated learning, data analytics), and other promising trends in networked computing (e.g., edge and cloud computing). Moreover, we discuss the DT deployment strategies at different industrial communication layers to meet the monitoring and control requirements of industrial applications. The 6G vision is envisaged to enable agile network expansion and rapid deployment of new on-demand microservices (e.g., visibility services for data traffic management, mobile edge computing services) closer to the network's edge IoT devices. However, providing one of the critical features of network visibility services, i.e., data flow prediction in the network, is challenging at the edge devices within a dynamic cloud-native environment as the traffic flow characteristics are random and sporadic. To provide the AI-native services for the 6G vision, we propose a novel edge-native framework to provide an intelligent prognosis technique for data traffic management in this paper. The prognosis model uses long short-term memory (LSTM)-based encoder-decoder deep learning, which we train on real time-series multivariate data records collected from the edge $\mu$-boxes of a selected testbed network. Our result accurately predicts the statistical characteristics of data traffic and verifies the trained model against the ground truth observations. Backscatter Communication (BackCom), which is based on passive reflection and modulation of an incident radio-frequency (RF) wave, has emerged as a cutting-edge technological paradigm for self-sustainable Internet-of-things (IoT). Nevertheless, the contemporary BackCom systems are limited to short-range and low data rate applications only, thus rendering them insufficient on their own to support pervasive connectivity among the massive number of IoT devices. Meanwhile, wireless networks are rapidly evolving towards the smart radio paradigm. In this regard, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have come to the forefront to transform the wireless propagation environment into a fully controllable and customizable space in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner. Targeting the sixth-generation (6G) horizon, we anticipate the integration of RISs into BackCom systems as a new frontier for enabling 6G IoT networks. In this article, for the first time in the open literature, we provide a tutorial overview of RIS-assisted BackCom (RIS-BackCom) systems. Specifically, we introduce the four different variants of RIS-BackCom and identify the potential improvements that can be achieved by incorporating RISs into BackCom systems. In addition, owing to the unrivaled effectiveness of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), we present a case study on an RIS-assisted NOMA-enhanced BackCom system. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), with the potential to realize a smart radio environment, have emerged as an energy-efficient and a cost-effective technology to support the services and demands foreseen for coming decades. By leveraging a large number of low-cost passive reflecting elements, RISs introduce a phase-shift in the impinging signal to create a favorable propagation channel between the transmitter and the receiver.~\textcolor{black}{In this article, we provide a tutorial overview of RISs for sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. Specifically, we present a comprehensive discussion on performance gains that can be achieved by integrating RISs with emerging communication technologies. We address the practical implementation of RIS-assisted networks and expose the crucial challenges, including the RIS reconfiguration, deployment and size optimization, and channel estimation. Furthermore, we explore the integration of RIS and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) under imperfect channel state information (CSI). Our numerical results illustrate the importance of better channel estimation in RIS-assisted networks and indicate the various factors that impact the size of RIS. Although the idea of using wireless links for covering large areas is not new, the advent of LPWANs has recently started changing the game. Simple, robust, narrowband modulation schemes permit the implementation of low-cost radio devices offering high receiver sensitivity, thus improving the overall link budget. The several technologies belonging to the LPWAN family, including the well-known LoRaWAN solution, provide a cost-effective answer to many Internet-of-things (IoT) applications, requiring wireless communication capable of supporting large networks of many devices (e.g., smart metering). Generally, the adopted MAC strategy is based on pure ALOHA, which, among other things, allows to minimize the traffic overhead under constrained duty cycle limitations of the unlicensed bands. Unfortunately, ALOHA suffers from poor scalability, rapidly collapsing in dense networks. This work investigates the design of an improved LoRaWAN MAC scheme based on slotted ALOHA. In particular, the required time dissemination is provided by out-of-band communications leveraging on FM-RDS broadcasting. An experimental setup based on low-cost hardware is used to characterize the obtainable synchronization performance and derive a timing error model. Consequently, improvements in success probability and energy efficiency have been validated by means of simulations in very large networks with up to 10000 nodes. It is shown that the advantage of the proposed scheme over conventional LoRaWAN communication is up to 100% when short update time and large payload are required. Similar results are obtained regarding the energy efficiency improvement, which is close to 100% for relatively short transmission intervals and long message duration; however, due to the additional overhead for listening to the time dissemination messages, efficiency gain can be negative for short-duration messages fastly repeating., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement

Many new narrowband low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) (e.g., LoRaWAN, Sigfox) have opted to use pure ALOHA-like access for its reduced control overhead and asynchronous transmissions. Although asynchronous access reduces the energy consumption of IoT devices, the network performance suffers from high intra-network interference in dense deployments. Contrarily, synchronous access can improve throughput and fairness, but it requires time synchronization. Unfortunately, maintaining synchronization over the narrowband LPWANs wastes channel time and transmission opportunities. In this paper, we propose the use of out-of-band time-dissemination to relatively synchronize LoRa devices and thereby facilitate resource-efficient slotted uplink communication. To this end, we conceptualize and analyze a co-designed synchronization and random access mechanism that can effectively exploit technologies providing limited time accuracy, such as FM radio data system (FM-RDS). While considering the LoRa-specific parameters, we derive the throughput of the proposed mechanism, compare it to a generic synchronous random access using in-band synchronization, and design the communication parameters under time uncertainty. We scrutinize the transmission time uncertainty of a device by introducing a clock error model that accounts for the errors in the synchronization source, local clock, propagation delay, and transceiver's transmission time uncertainty. We characterize the time uncertainty of FM-RDS with hardware measurements and perform simulations to evaluate the proposed solution. The limited coexistence capabilities of current Internet-of-things (IoT) wireless standards produce inefficient spectrum utilization and mutual performance impairment. The entity of the issue escalates in industrial IoT (IIoT) applications, which instead have stringent quality-of-service requirements and exhibit very-low error tolerance. The constant growth of wireless applications over unlicensed bands mandates then the adoption of dynamic spectrum access techniques, which can greatly benefit from interference mapping over multiple dimensions of the radio space. In this article, the authors analyze the critical role of real-time interference detection and classification mechanisms that rely on IIoT devices only, without the added complexity of specialized hardware. The trade-offs between classification performance and feasibility are analyzed in connection with the implementation on low-complexity IIoT devices. Moreover, the authors explain how to use such mechanisms for enabling IIoT networks to construct and maintain multidimensional interference maps at run-time in an autonomous fashion. Backscatter communication (BackCom) has been emerging as a prospective candidate in tackling lifetime management problems for massively deployed Internet-of-Things devices, which suffer from battery-related issues, i.e., replacements, charging, and recycling. This passive sensing approach allows a backscatter sensor node (BSN) to transmit information by reflecting the incident signal from a carrier emitter without initiating its transmission. To multiplex multiple BSNs, power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which is a prime candidate for multiple access in beyond 5G systems, is fully exploited in this work. Recently, considerable attention has been devoted to the NOMA-aided BackCom networks in the context of outage probabilities and system throughput. However, the closed-form expressions of bit error rate (BER) for such a system have not been studied. In this paper, we present the design and analysis of a NOMA enhanced bistatic BackCom system for a battery-less smart communication paradigm. Specifically, we derive the closed-form BER expressions for a cluster of two devices in a bistatic BackCom system employing NOMA with imperfect successive interference cancellation under Nakagami-$m$ fading channel. The obtained expressions are utilized to evaluate the reflection coefficients of devices needed for the most favorable system performance. The scale of wireless technologies penetration in our daily lives, primarily triggered by the Internet-of-things (IoT)-based smart cities, is beaconing the possibilities of novel localization and tracking techniques. Recently, low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies have emerged as a solution to offer scalable wireless connectivity for smart city applications. LoRa is one such technology that provides energy efficiency and wide-area coverage. This article explores the use of intelligent machine learning techniques, such as support vector machines, spline models, decision trees, and ensemble learning, for received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based ranging in LoRa networks, on a training dataset collected in two different environments: indoors and outdoors. The suitable ranging model is then used to experimentally evaluate the accuracy of localization and tracking using trilateration in the studied environments. Later, we present the accuracy of LoRa-based positioning system (LPS) and compare it with the existing ZigBee, WiFi, and Bluetooth-based solutions. Energy detection process for enabling opportunistic spectrum access in dynamic primary user (PU) scenarios, where PU changes state from active to inactive at random time instances, requires estimation of several parameters ranging from noise variance and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to instantaneous and average PU activity. A prerequisite to parameter estimation is an accurate extraction of the signal and noise samples in a received signal time frame. In this letter, we propose a low-complexity and accurate signal separation algorithm as compared to well-known methods, which is also blind to the PU activity distribution. The proposed algorithm is analyzed in a semi-experimental simulation setup for its accuracy and time complexity in recognizing signal and noise samples, and its use in channel occupancy estimation, under varying occupancy and SNR of the PU signal. We present a stochastic geometry-based model to investigate alternative medium access choices for LoRaWAN---a widely adopted low-power wide-area networking (LPWAN) technology for the Internet-of-things (IoT). LoRaWAN adoption is driven by its simplified network architecture, air interface, and medium access. The physical layer, known as LoRa, provides quasi-orthogonal virtual channels through spreading factors (SFs) and time-power capture gains. However, the adopted pure ALOHA access mechanism suffers, in terms of scalability, under the same-channel same-SF transmissions from a large number of devices. In this paper, our objective is to explore access mechanisms beyond-ALOHA for LoRaWAN. Using recent results on time- and power-capture effects of LoRa, we develop a unified model for the comparative study of other choices, i.e., slotted ALOHA and carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA). The model includes the necessary design parameters of these access mechanisms, such as guard time and synchronization accuracy for slotted ALOHA, carrier sensing threshold for CSMA. It also accounts for the spatial interaction of devices in annular-shaped regions, characteristic of LoRa, for CSMA. The performance derived from the model in terms of coverage probability, channel throughput, and energy efficiency are validated using Monte-Carlo simulations. Our analysis shows that slotted ALOHA indeed has higher reliability than pure ALOHA but at the cost of lower energy efficiency for low device densities. This article evaluates the quality-of-service performance and scalability of the recently released Bluetooth Mesh protocol and provides general guidelines on its use and configuration. Through extensive simulations, we analyzed the impact of the configuration of all the different protocol's parameters on the end-to-end reliability, delay, and scalability. In particular, we focused on the structure of the packet broadcast process, which takes place in time intervals known as \textit{Advertising Events} and \textit{Scanning Events}. Results indicate a high degree of interdependence among all the different timing parameters involved in both the scanning and the advertising processes and show that the correct operation of the protocol greatly depends on the compatibility between their configurations. We also demonstrated that introducing randomization in these timing parameters, as well as varying the duration of the \textit{Advertising Events}, reduces the drawbacks of the flooding propagation mechanism implemented by the protocol. Using data collected from a real office environment, we also studied the behavior of the protocol in the presence of WLAN interference. It was shown that Bluetooth Mesh is vulnerable to external interference, even when implementing the standardized limitation of using only 3 out of the 40 Bluetooth Low Energy frequency channels. We observed that the achievable average delay is relatively low, of around 250~ms for over 10 hops under the worst simulated network conditions. However, results proved that scalability is especially challenging for Bluetooth Mesh since it is prone to broadcast storm, hindering the communication reliability for denser deployments., Comment: 12 pages

Wireless edge is about distributing intelligence to the wireless devices wherein the distribution of accurate time reference is essential for time-critical machine-type communication (cMTC). In 5G-based cMTC, enabling time synchronization in the wireless edge means moving beyond the current synchronization needs and solutions in 5G radio access. In this article, we analyze the device-level synchronization needs of potential cMTC applications: industrial automation, power distribution, vehicular communication, and live audio/video production. We present an over-the-air (OTA) synchronization scheme comprised of 5G air interface parameters, and discuss their associated timing errors. We evaluate the estimation error in device-to-base station propagation delay from timing advance (TA) under random errors and show how to reduce the estimation error. In this paper, we study cross-layer optimization of low-power wireless links for reliability-aware applications while considering both the constraints and the non-ideal characteristics of the hardware in Internet-of-things (IoT) devices. Specifically, we define an energy consumption (EC) model that captures the energy cost---of transceiver circuitry, power amplifier, packet error statistics, packet overhead, etc.---in delivering a useful data bit. We derive the EC models for an ideal and two realistic non-linear power amplifier models. To incorporate packet error statistics, we develop a simple, in the form of elementary functions, and accurate closed-form packet error rate (PER) approximation in Rayleigh block-fading. Using the EC models, we derive energy-optimal yet reliability and hardware compliant conditions for limiting unconstrained optimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and payload size. Together with these conditions, we develop a semi-analytic algorithm for resource-constrained IoT devices to jointly optimize parameters on physical (modulation size, SNR) and MAC (payload size and the number of retransmissions) layers in relation to link distance. Energy sampling-based interference detection and identification (IDI) methods collide with the limitations of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IoT hardware. Moreover, long sensing times, complexity and inability to track concurrent interference strongly inhibit their applicability in most IoT deployments. Motivated by the increasing need for on-device IDI for wireless coexistence, we develop a lightweight and efficient method targeting interference identification already at the level of single interference bursts. Our method exploits real-time extraction of envelope and model-aided spectral features, specifically designed considering the physical properties of signals captured with COTS hardware. We adopt manifold supervised-learning (SL) classifiers ensuring suitable performance and complexity trade-off for IoT platforms with different computational capabilities. The proposed IDI method is capable of real-time identification of IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 802.15.4, 802.15.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy wireless standards, enabling isolation and extraction of standard-specific traffic statistics even in the case of heavy concurrent interference. Low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies are gaining momentum for internet-of-things (IoT) applications since they promise wide coverage to a massive number of battery-operated devices using grant-free medium access. LoRaWAN, with its physical (PHY) layer design and regulatory efforts, has emerged as the widely adopted LPWAN solution. By using chirp spread spectrum modulation with qausi-orthogonal spreading factors (SFs), LoRa PHY offers coverage to wide-area applications while supporting high-density of devices. However, thus far its scalability performance has been inadequately modeled and the effect of interference resulting from the imperfect orthogonality of the SFs has not been considered. In this paper, we present an analytical model of a single-cell LoRa system that accounts for the impact of interference among transmissions over the same SF (co-SF) as well as different SFs (inter-SF). By modeling the interference field as Poisson point process under duty-cycled ALOHA, we derive the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) distributions for several interference conditions. Results show that, for a duty cycle as low as 0.33%, the network performance under co-SF interference alone is considerably optimistic as the inclusion of inter-SF interference unveils a further drop in the success probability and the coverage probability of approximately 10% and 15%, respectively for 1500 devices in a LoRa channel. Finally, we illustrate how our analysis can characterize the critical device density with respect to cell size for a given reliability target.

Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) is an emerging feature in 5G and beyond wireless systems, which is introduced to support stringent latency and reliability requirements of mission-critical industrial applications. In many potential applications, multiple sensors/actuators collaborate and require isochronous operation with strict and bounded jitter, e.g., \SI{1}{\micro\second}. To this end, network time synchronization becomes crucial for real-time and isochronous communication between a controller and the sensors/actuators. In this paper, we look at different applications in factory automation and smart grids to reveal the requirements of device-level time synchronization and the challenges in extending the high-granularity timing information to the devices. Also, we identify the potential over-the-air synchronization mechanisms in 5G radio interface, and discuss the needed enhancements to meet the jitter constraints of time-sensitive URLLC applications.

Noise power estimation is a key issue in modern wireless communication systems. It allows resource allocation by detecting white spectral spaces effectively, and gives control over the communication process by adjusting transmission power. Thus far, the proposed estimation methods in the literature are based on spectral averaging, eigenvalues of sample covariance matrix, information theory, and statistical signal analysis. Each method is characterized by certain stability, accuracy and complexity. However, the existing literature does not provide an appropriate comparison. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the existing estimation techniques intensively in terms of stability and accuracy, followed by detailed complexity analysis. The basis for comparison is signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation in simulated industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band transmission. The source of used background distortions is complex noise measurement, recorded by USRP-2932 in an industrial production area. Based on the examined solutions, we also analyze the influence of noise samples separation techniques on the estimation process. As a response to the defects in the used methods, we propose a novel noise samples separation algorithm based on the adaptation of rank order filtering (ROF). In addition to simple implementation, the proposed method has a very good 0.5 dB root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and smaller than 0.1 dB resolution, thus achieving a performance that is comparable with the methods exploiting information theory concepts.

Internet-of-things (IoT), with the vision of billions of connected devices, is bringing a massively heterogeneous character to wireless connectivity in unlicensed bands. The heterogeneity in medium access parameters, transmit power and activity levels among the coexisting networks leads to detrimental cross-technology interference. The stochastic traffic distributions, shaped under CSMA/CA rules, of an interfering network and channel fading makes it challenging to model and analyze the performance of an interfered network. In this paper, to study the temporal interaction between the traffic distributions of two coexisting networks, we develop a renewal-theoretic packet collision model and derive a generic collision-time distribution (CTD) function of an interfered system. The CTD function holds for any busy- and idle-time distributions of the coexisting traffic. As the earlier studies suggest a long-tailed idle-time statistics in real environments, the developed model only requires the Laplace transform of long-tailed distributions to find the CTD. Furthermore, we present a packet error rate (PER) model under the proposed CTD and multipath fading of the interfering signals. The vision of connecting billions of battery operated devices to be used for diverse emerging applications calls for a wireless communication system that can support stringent reliability and latency requirements. Both reliability and energy efficiency are critical for many of these applications that involve communication with short packets which undermine the coding gain achievable from large packets. In this paper, we study a cross-layer approach to optimize the performance of low-power wireless links. At first, we derive a simple and accurate packet error rate (PER) expression for uncoded schemes in block fading channels based on a new proposition that shows that the waterfall threshold in the PER upper bound in Nakagami-m fading channels is tightly approximated by the m-th moment of an asymptotic distribution of PER in AWGN channel. The proposed PER approximation establishes an explicit connection between the physical and link layers parameters, and the packet error rate. We exploit this connection for cross-layer design and optimization of communication links. To this end, we propose a semi-analytic framework to jointly optimize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and modulation order at physical layer, and the packet length and number of retransmissions at link layer with respect to distance under the prescribed delay and reliability constraints.

An efficient key management system is required to support cryptography. Most key management systems use either pre-installed shared keys or install initial security parameters using out-of-band channels. These methods create an additional burden for engineers who manage the devices in industrial plants. Hence, device deployment in industrial plants becomes a challenging task in order to achieve security. In this work, we present a device deployment framework that can support key management using the existing trust towards employees in a plant. This approach reduces the access to initial security parameters by employees, rather it helps to bind the trust of the employee with device commissioning. Thus, this approach presents a unique solution to the device deployment problem. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining popularity as a flexible and economical alternative to field-bus installations for monitoring and control applications. For mission-critical applications, communication networks must provide end-to-end reliability guarantees, posing substantial challenges for WSN. Reliability can be improved by redundancy, and is often addressed on the MAC layer by re-submission of lost packets, usually applying slotted scheduling. Recently, researchers have proposed a strategy to optimally improve the reliability of a given schedule by repeating the most rewarding slots in a schedule incrementally until a deadline. This Incrementer can be used with most scheduling algorithms but has scalability issues which narrows its usability to offline calculations of schedules, for networks that are rather static. In this paper, we introduce SchedEx, a generic heuristic scheduling algorithm extension which guarantees a user-defined end-to-end reliability. SchedEx produces competitive schedules to the existing approach, and it does that consistently more than an order of magnitude faster. The harsher the end-to-end reliability demand of the network, the better SchedEx performs compared to the Incrementer. We further show that SchedEx has a more evenly distributed improvement impact on the scheduling algorithms, whereas the Incrementer favors schedules created by certain scheduling algorithms.
