Abstract

In this thesis we explore the the possibility of characterising C* algebras by their (non-isometric) Banach algebra structure alone. We introduce a property of Banach algebras, the Total Reduction Property, and conjecture that a Banach algebra has this property if and only if it is isomorphic to a C* algebra. We establish some partial results in support of this conjecture.

32. Creating Gender Equitable Computer Classrooms: A Model Project.

Abstract

Project FOCAL Point is a multi-strand project designed to increase female participation in the computing sciences. The project targets two crucial groups: high school computing teachers and female high school students. Features include a two-week teacher workshop, a one-week Computer Camp for Young Women, mini-grant projects and a follow-up conference for teacher participants, and listservs for both teacher and student participants. This paper focuses on the teacher participant responses and reactions to the two-week teacher workshop during the project's inaugural (pilot) event. Workshop objectives included: acquaint teachers with gender issues as related to computing; help teachers become aware of unconscious biases they may possess about the culture of computing; introduce teachers to instructional practices known to appeal to women and girls; provide teachers with career information; and provide teachers with technology-related content knowledge and skills. The evaluation study examined changes in computer attitudes and skills reported by teachers as a result of their participation in the workshop. Although not overwhelming, results indicated that the workshop was successful in meeting its objectives. (C0jtains 5 figures, 1 table, and 13 references.) (Author/AEF)

33. Parameter Passing: The Conceptions Novices Construct.

Abstract

This study explores the parameter-related misconceptions of two college students enrolled in a Pascal programming course. Findings indicate that both students appeared to conceive a direct procedure-to-procedure linkage, with the connection being made by identically named formal parameters. Both students were able, by making seemingly innocuous adjustments to formal parameter lists, to construct correctly functioning modular programs. They were also able to correctly answer parameter-related questions as long as the questions did not provoke a conflict with their fundamental misconceptions of the parameter process. As a result, the misconceptions were hidden from the instructor and perhaps from the students themselves. The results are discussed within a constructivist framework and implications for instruction are suggested. Contains 22 references. (Author/JRH)

Abstract

This book is a memoir of one-room school life in 1929. In his day, Cratis D. Williams (1911-85) was America's foremost scholar on the Appalachian experience. This book is the story of his first teaching assignment at age 18 in a one-room K-8 school on Caines Creek in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Williams details his classroom practices and innovations and describes his students, his own and students' daily lives, and special school events and holidays. His teaching philosophy was unique. He assumed that all children were capable, eager, and industrious. Proceeding on that assumption, he laid down no rules. Rather, he referred to the desire of everyone to be thoughtful and considerate of others and to have others return thoughtfulness and consideration. Williams' keen sensitivity to other people's feelings and his compassion and appreciation for others became personal trademarks. His good will and spirit of tolerance were the foundation stones of his "educational statesmanship," and he claims that his success as a public person was due to his having accepted himself with confidence as an Appalachian. Includes two short autobiographical statements, photographs, and an index. (TD)
