Dietitians and nutrition professionals are frequently involved in the care of persons with identified genetic diseases thought to have a genetic/nutritional component. The Human Genome Education Model Project II conducted the first national survey of emerging issues in genetics for health professionals, including 600 dietitians. The purpose of the survey was (1) to determine needs, opinions, experiences, and knowledge of the Human Genome Project and current issues in human genetics and (2) to identify priority topics for education in human genetics. The survey found that genetics services, educational background, and professional activities were similar for dietitians as compared to social workers, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists. The 13th International Congress of Dietetics was a rewarding educational and cultural experience. The program covered many topics: technological advances, ethical issues, education and practice challenges, working with other professionals, and changing global health. The Frances E. Fischer Memorial Nutrition Lecture was presented on six revolutions affecting dietetics.
