1. Evolution of the Torsional Rigidity under Geometric Flows

Abstract

This paper explores the behavior of the torsional rigidity of a precompact domain as the ambient manifold evolves under a geometric flow. Specifically, we derive bounds on torsional rigidity under the Ricci Flow for Heisenberg spaces and homogeneous spheres. Additionally, we establish bounds under the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow for strictly convex, free-boundary, disk-type hypersurfaces within a ball. In this latter case, by extending the analysis to the maximal existence time of the flow, we obtain inequalities of comparison with the flat disk for both volume and torsional rigidity.

2. Lie algebraic invariants in quantum linear optics

Abstract

Quantum linear optics is a promising candidate for obtaining a quantum computational advantage. However, linear optics without post-selection is not powerful enough to produce any quantum state from a given input state. This limits its utility since some computations require entangled resources that are difficult to prepare. Thus, we need a deeper understanding of linear optical state preparation. In this work, we give a recipe to derive conserved quantities in the evolution of arbitrary states along any possible passive linear interferometer. We obtain the invariants by projecting the density operator of the state onto the Lie algebra of passive linear optical Hamiltonians. The conservation of the invariants gives necessary conditions for exact and approximate state preparation with passive linear optics: if input and output states have different invariants, it will be impossible to design a linear optical experiment that evolves one into the other or a sufficiently close one. Therefore, the invariants allow us to narrow the search when trying to prepare entangled states useful for quantum information, like Bell or NOON states, from easy-to-prepare states, like Fock states. We conclude that future exact and approximate state preparation methods will need to take into account the necessary conditions given by our invariants to weed out impossible linear optical evolutions., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

We give a necessary condition for photon state transformations in linear optical setups preserving the total number of photons. From an analysis of the algebra describing the quantum evolution, we find a conserved quantity that appears in all allowed optical transformations. We comment some examples and numerical applications, with example code, and give three general no-go results. These include (i) the impossibility of deterministic transformations which redistribute the photons from one to two different modes, (ii) a proof that it is impossible to generate a perfect Bell state in heralded schemes with a separable input for any number of ancillary photons and modes and a fixed herald and (iii) a restriction for the conversion between different types of entanglement (converting GHZ to W states)., Comment: 18 pages. Abstract

We explore how to encode more than a qubit in vanadyl porphyrin molecules hosting a electronic spin 1/2 coupled to a nuclear spin 7/2. The spin Hamiltonian and its parameters, as well as the spin dynamics, have been determined via a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance, heat capacity, magnetization and on-chip magnetic spectroscopy experiments performed on single crystals. We find low temperature spin coherence times of micro-seconds and spin relaxation times longer than a second. For sufficiently strong magnetic fields (B larger than 0.1 T, corresponding to resonance frequencies of 9 to 10 GHz) these properties make vanadyl porphyrin molecules suitable qubit realizations. The presence of multiple equispaced nuclear spin levels then merely provides 8 alternatives to define the 0 and 1 basis states. For lower magnetic fields (below 0.1 T), and lower frequencies (smaller than 2 GHz), we find spectroscopic signatures of a sizeable electronuclear entanglement. This effect generates a larger set of allowed transitions between different electronuclear spin states and removes their degeneracies. Under these conditions, we show that each molecule fulfills the conditions to act as a universal 4-qubit processor or, equivalently, as a d = 16 qudit. These findings widen the catalogue of chemically designed systems able to implement non-trivial quantum functionalities, such as quantum simulations and, especially, quantum error correction at the molecular level., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, plus supplementary information

Abstract

We combine top-down and bottom-up nanolithography to optimize the coupling of small molecular spin ensembles to $1.4$ GHz on-chip superconducting resonators. Nanoscopic constrictions, fabricated with a focused ion beam at the central transmission line, locally concentrate the microwave magnetic field. Drops of free-radical molecules have been deposited from solution onto the circuits. For the smallest ones, the molecules were delivered at the relevant circuit areas by means of an atomic force microscope. The number of spins $N_{\rm eff}$ effectively coupled to each device was accurately determined combining Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Microscopies. The collective spin-photon coupling constant has been determined for samples with $N_{\rm eff}$ ranging between $2 \times 10^{6}$ and $10^{12}$ spins, and for temperatures down to $44$ mK. The results show the well-known collective enhancement of the coupling proportional to the square root of $N_{\rm eff}$. The average coupling of individual spins is enhanced by more than four orders of magnitude (from $4$ mHz up to above $180$ Hz) when the transmission line width is reduced from $400$ microns down to $42$ nm, and reaches maximum values near $1$ kHz for molecules located on the smallest nanoconstrictions. Un movimiento huelgístico enmarcado por el proceso de cambio político y el agravamiento de la crisis del petróleo que terminaría por golpear con dureza a la economía española. Contrariamente a lo que se ha mantenido hasta el momento, esta contribución trata de reinterpretar el sentido de aquella intensa movilización, cuestionando su carácter eminentemente defensivo a través del análisis cuantitativo y el método histórico.

Abstract

In this paper, we establish geometric and topological upper bounds on the first energy level gap of a particle confined to move on a compact surface in 3-space. Our main contribution is proving that the first gap in the energy spectrum of a confined particle (a physical property) is bounded above by the Willmore energy of the confining surface (a geometric property). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the only surfaces that permit a confined particle with a stationary and uniformly distributed wave function are surfaces with constant skew curvature.

Abstract

A promising route toward the realization of a molecular spin quantum processor relies on coupling magnetic molecules to individual photons confined within superconducting resonators. As a simple approximation to such a hybrid scheme, here we explore the conditions that determine the collective coupling of DPPH organic free radicals to lumped-element LC superconducting resonators. In these chips, multiple resonators are coupled to a single readout line. This enables designing the relevant resonator properties, such as resonance frequency, cavity volume, and impedance while keeping a perfect transmission for the device. Here, we exploit these design possibilities to achieve a coherent spin-photon coupling regime. Besides, we study how this coupling depends on the relative orientation of the external dc magnetic field concerning the photon magnetic field and the spins locations concerning the chip surface. Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of the Cognitive and Language scales Bayley-III in the early assessment of cognitive and language functions in the context of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. This paper focuses on the application of the Bayley-III and studies the predictive value of the test result in children with ASD with different levels of verbal ability. Method: A sample of 135 children (121 boys, 14 girls) with a confirmed ASD diagnosis at age 4 years were assessed with the Bayley-III before 42 months of age (m = 36.49, s = 4.46) and later with other rating scales of different psychological and psycholinguistic functions as part of a longitudinal study ["McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities" (MSCA) (n = 48, 90% boys), "Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children" (K-ABC) (n = 38, 87% boys) or "Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities" (ITPA) (n = 44, 89% boys)]. Age assessment in months: MSCA (m = 48.80, s = 3.33), K-ABC (m = 51.80, s = 7.17) and ITPA (m = 54.48, s = 3.34). Results: Lower scores on the cognitive and language Bayley-III scales before 3.5 years of age predicted lower cognitive and oral language levels at 4 years of age. A significant correlation was found between the Cognitive Bayley-III Scale and the General Cognitive MSCA Scale, and with the Compound K-ABC Mental Processing. An association between the nonverbal cognitive level and oral language level acquired at 4 years of age was found. Conclusions: The Bayley-III is a useful instrument in cognitive and language assessment of ASD.

33. 1979: Strike Year. A defensive labor dispute?

Abstract

This paper approaches the intense labor unrest experienced during 1979. This wave of strikes was framed by the process of political change and the worsening of the oil crisis that would end up hitting the Spanish economy hard. Contrary to what has been held so far, this contribution tries to reinterpret the meaning of the intense mobilization, questioning its eminently defensive character through combined quantitative analysis and historical method, El presente artículo se aproxima a la intensa conflictividad laboral experimentada durante 1979. Un movimiento huelgístico enmarcado por el proceso de cambio político y el agravamiento de la crisis del petróleo que terminaría por golpear con dureza a la economía española. Contrariamente a lo que se ha mantenido hasta el momento, esta contribución trata de reinterpretar el sentido de aquella intensa movilización, cuestionando su carácter eminentemente defensivo a través del análisis cuantitativo y el método histórico.

Abstract

Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with our upper bound if and only if the mean curvature pointed inward of each geodesic sphere is a radial function.

Abstract

AimsTo assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health condition of people ≥75 years of age and on their family caregivers in Spain.DesignMulticentric, mixed method concurrent study.MethodsThis work, which will be conducted within the primary care setting in 11 administrative regions of Spain, will include three coordinated studies with different methodologies. The first is a population-based cohort study that will use real-life data to analyze the rates and evolution of health needs, care provision, and services utilization before, during, and after the pandemic. The second is a prospective cohort study with 18 months of follow-up that will evaluate the impact of COVID-19 disease on mortality, frailty, functional and cognitive capacity, and quality of life of the participants. Finally, the third will be a qualitative study with a critical social approach to understand and interpret the social, political, and economic dimensions associated with the use of health services during the pandemic. We have followed the SPIRIT Checklist to address trial protocol and related documents. This research is being funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III since 2021 and was approved by its ethics committee (June 2022).DiscussionThe study findings will reveal the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the older adults and their caregivers. This information will serve policymakers to adapt health policies to the needs of this population in situations of maximum stress, such as that produced by the COVID-19 pandemic.Trial RegistrationIdentifier: NCT05249868 [ClinicalTrials.gov].
