Abstract

El delta del río Paraná es un ecosistema de alta fragilidad ambiental y muy susceptible a las inundaciones. A su vez, se caracteriza por tener una importante actividad económica, social y productiva. Disponer de una cartografía de susceptibilidad hídrica en la región es una herramienta útil para la toma de decisiones en los sectores agropecuario y forestal. Además de los pronósticos de caudales, es importante contar con una estimación de la distribución espacial de los derrames según el escenario hidrológico previsto que puede fluctuar entre muy seco (aguas muy bajas) y muy húmedo (aguas muy altas). Mediante el procesamiento y clasificación de imágenes satelitales de alta resolución correspondientes a la serie temporal 1980-2010 se generó un mapa de susceptibilidad hídrica en el tramo medio del delta Paranaense. El empleo de esta información superpuesta con las cartas topográficas de la zona permitirá al productor agropecuario, a través de la ubicación por coordenadas geográficas, tener conocimiento del grado de afectación por el agua que tendrá un área determinada.

Abstract

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), the most frequent mitochondrial disease, is associated with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) point mutations affecting Complex I subunits, usually homoplasmic. This blinding disorder is characterized by incomplete penetrance, possibly related to several genetic modifying factors. We recently reported that increased mitochondrial biogenesis in unaffected mutation carriers is a compensatory mechanism, which reduces penetrance. Also, environmental factors such as cigarette smoking have been implicated as disease triggers. To investigate this issue further, we first assessed the relationship between cigarette smoke and mtDNA copy number in blood cells from large cohorts of LHON families, finding that smoking was significantly associated with the lowest mtDNA content in affected individuals. To unwrap the mechanism of tobacco toxicity in LHON, we exposed fibroblasts from affected individuals, unaffected mutation carriers and controls to cigarette smoke condensate (CSC). CSC decreased mtDNA copy number in all cells; moreover, it caused significant reduction of ATP level only in mutated cells including carriers. This implies that the bioenergetic compensation in carriers is hampered by exposure to smoke derivatives. We also observed that in untreated cells the level of carbonylated proteins was highest in affected individuals, whereas the level of several detoxifying enzymes was highest in carriers. Thus, carriers are particularly successful in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity. After CSC exposure, the amount of detoxifying enzymes increased in all cells, but carbonylated proteins increased only in LHON mutant cells, mostly from affected individuals. All considered, it appears that exposure to smoke derivatives has a more deleterious effect in affected individuals, whereas carriers are the most efficient in mitigating ROS rather than recovering bioenergetics. Therefore, the identification of genetic modifiers that modulate LHON penetrance must take into account also the exposure to environmental triggers such as tobacco smoke.

Abstract

We detect ionized gas characteristics indicative of winds in three disk-dominated galaxies that are members of a super-group at z=0.37 that will merge to form a Coma-mass cluster. All three galaxies are IR-luminous (L_IR > 4 x 10^{10} L_sun, SFR >8 M_sun per year) and lie outside the X-ray cores of the galaxy groups. We find that the most IR-luminous galaxy has strong blue and redshifted emission lines with velocities of ~ +/-200 km/s and a third, blueshifted (~ 900 km/s) component. This galaxy's line-widths (Hb, [OIII]5007, [NII], Ha) correspond to velocities of 100-1000 km/s. We detect extraplanar gas in two of three galaxies with SFR > 8 M_sun per year whose orientations are approximately edge-on and which have IFU spaxels off the stellar disk. IFU maps reveal that the extraplanar gas extends to r_h ~ 10 kpc; [NII] and Ha line-widths correspond to velocities of ~200-400 km/s in the disk and decrease to ~50-150 km/s above the disk. Multi-wavelength observations indicate that the emission is dominated by star formation. Including the most IR-luminous galaxy we find that 18% of supergroup members with SFR > 8 M_sun per year show ionized gas characteristics indicative of outflows. This is a lower limit as showing that gas is outflowing in the remaining, moderately inclined, galaxies requires a non-trivial decoupling of contributions to the emission lines from rotational and turbulent motion. Ionized gas mass loss in these winds is ~0.1 M_sun per year for each galaxy, although the winds are likely to entrain significantly larger amounts of mass in neutral and molecular gas., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures (slightly degraded in quality), accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract

Giant low surface brightness galaxies (GLSBs) have flat discs extending up to ~100 kpc. Their formation is a puzzle for cosmological simulations in the cold dark matter scenario. We suggest that GLSBs might be the final product of the evolution of collisional ring galaxies. In fact, our simulations show that, approximately 0.5-1.5 Gyr after the collision which led to the formation of the ring galaxy, the ring keeps expanding and fades, while the disc becomes very large (~100 kpc) and flat. Abstract

We simulate the collisional formation of a ring galaxy and we integrate its evolution up to 1.5 Gyr after the interaction. About 100-200 Myr after the collision, the simulated galaxy is very similar to observed ring galaxies (e.g. Cartwheel). After this stage, the ring keeps expanding and fades. Approximately 0.5-1 Gyr after the interaction, the disc becomes very large (~100 kpc) and flat. Such extended discs have been observed only in giant low surface brightness galaxies (GLSBs). We compare various properties of our simulated galaxies (surface brightness profile, morphology, HI spectrum and rotation curve) with the observations of four well-known GLSBs (UGC6614, Malin 1, Malin 2 and NGC7589). The simulations match quite well the observations, suggesting that ring galaxies could be the progenitors of GLSBs. 20. Scaling relations of the colour-detected cluster RzCS 052 at z=1.016 and of some other high redshift clusters

Abstract

We report on the discovery of the z=1.016 cluster RzCS 052 using a modified red sequence method, followup spectroscopy and X-ray imaging. This cluster has a velocity dispersion of 710+-150 km/s, a virial mass of 4.0e14 Msol (based on 21 spectroscopically confirmed members) and an X-ray luminosity of (0.68+- 0.47)e44 ergs/s in the [1-4] keV band. This optically selected cluster appears to be of richness class 3 and to follow the known L_X-sigma_v relation for high redshift X-ray selected clusters. Using these data, we find that the halo occupation number for this cluster is only marginally consistent with what expected assuming a self-similar evolution of cluster scaling relations, suggesting perhaps a break of them at z~1. We also rule out a strong galaxy merging activity between z=1 and today. Finally, we present a Bayesian approach to measuring cluster velocity dispersions and X-ray luminosities in the presence of a background: we critically reanalyze recent claims for X-ray underluminous clusters using these techniques and find that the clusters can be accommodated within the existing L_X -sigma_v relation., Comment: MNRAS, in press

21. Intermediate-mass black holes and ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel ring galaxy

Abstract

Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the Cartwheel galaxy show ~17 bright X-ray sources (>~5x10^38 erg s^-1), all within the gas-rich outer ring. We explore the hypothesis that these X-ray sources are powered by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) accreting gas or undergoing mass transfer from a stellar companion. To this purpose, we run N-body/SPH simulations of the galaxy interaction which might have led to the formation of Cartwheel, tracking the dynamical evolution of two different IMBH populations: halo and disc IMBHs. Halo IMBHs cannot account for the observed X-ray sources, as only a few of them cross the outer ring. Instead, more than half of the disc IMBHs are pulled in the outer ring as a consequence of the galaxy collision. However, also in the case of disc IMBHs, accretion from surrounding gas clouds cannot account for the high luminosities of the observed sources. Finally, more than 500 disc IMBHs are required to produce <~15 X-ray sources via mass transfer from very young stellar companions. Such number of IMBHs is very large and implies extreme assumptions. 22. IIR Adaptive Filters for Detection of Gravitational Waves from Coalescing Binaries

Abstract

In this paper we propose a new strategy for gravitational waves detection from coalescing binaries, using IIR Adaptive Line Enhancer (ALE) filters. This strategy is a classical hierarchical strategy in which the ALE filters have the role of triggers, used to select data chunks which may contain gravitational events, to be further analyzed with more refined optimal techniques, like the the classical Matched Filter Technique. After a direct comparison of the performances of ALE filters with the Wiener-Komolgoroff optimum filters (matched filters), necessary to discuss their performance and to evaluate the statistical limitation in their use as triggers, we performed a series of tests, demonstrating that these filters are quite promising both for the relatively small computational power needed and for the robustness of the algorithms used. The performed tests have shown a weak point of ALE filters, that we fixed by introducing a further strategy, based on a dynamic bank of ALE filters, running simultaneously, but started after fixed delay times. The results of this global trigger strategy seems to be very promising, and can be already used in the present interferometers, since it has the great advantage of requiring a quite small computational power and can easily run in real-time, in parallel with other data analysis algorithms., Comment: Accepted at SPIE: "Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation". 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Preventing non-adherence and treating adherence failure are important to consider in designing community-based clinical trials. The approach and methods for managing adherence are vital. This paper describes a practical and theoretically-based strategy for managing adherence in a small cancer prevention trial with subjects (n = 40) taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, piroxicam. Average daily pill intake adherence was exceptionally high (97.4%) as measured by self-report calendar. Thus, the generalized adherence enhancement approach used in this study may have been a related factor, although statistical model-testing was not possible in this small trial. The generalized intervention took into account factors such as the potential barriers and benefits of being in the study, self-efficacy and satisfaction with the participant/staff relationship. These and other theoretical variables were incorporated into an overall adherence strategy that is discussed.

Abstract

Adherence interventions were implemented in a 1-year community-based colon cancer prevention clinical trial (n = 110) using wheat bran fiber and calcium dietary supplements. The adherence promotion strategy was guided by a theoretical model.The adherence intervention contains both a generalized portion given to all participants and an individualized portion given to marginal (50-74% intake) and low (under 50% intake) adherers. A regression model was employed to assess the effectiveness of the interventions both at the first intervention and at subsequent times.The Health Behavior in Cancer Prevention Model-based adherence promotion intervention was associated with retention of participants, both during the run-in period and after randomization (P = 0.05); and maximization of the percentage of the 13.5-g recommended fiber supplement consumed during the trial (92.5%). The positive effects of the adherence intervention were greater with first-time nonadherers and the control group than with the experimental group. The high-fiber group had notably more biological GI effects from the increased fiber intake, more preexisting comorbidities, and lower perceived cognitive and physical health status.Randomized participants had excellent adherence overall. Retention rates in the trial were better than would be expected without the adherence intervention, especially among those participants who may have been at higher risk for dropping out of the study. This suggests that a systematic, theoretically based adherence strategy should be further tested in clinical trial settings in which lower adherence is a problem.

Abstract

This study identified participants' reasons for good, marginal or poor adherence, or withdrawing from community-based clinical studies using a dietary and/or drug intervention. Adults aged 48-75 years participated in one of three studies related to decreasing colon polyp recurrence. Qualitative data from progress notes (N = 675) and end-of-study evaluations (N = 87) were coded using constant comparative analysis with 100% content validity panel agreement. Most common reasons for non-adherence were barriers such as side-effects, interference with vacation plans, unrelated illness, forgetting and competing outside stressors. Participation motivators were benefits such as altruism, medical benefits, free service and staff rapport. Findings supported the Health Behavior in Cancer Prevention model-based approach to adherence interventions and provided directions for adherence promotion in future community-based clinical studies.
