Planning for sustainable neighborhoods is a high priority for many cities. It is therefore important to take the right decisions during the planning phase to ensure that important aspects are considered. One of these important aspects is to consider the harvesting of solar energy in the best possible way. It is however difficult to define the best ways to exploit the incoming solar energy. Solar energy can be used by means of active solar energy production, passively by means of daylighting buildings or outside buildings on the ground for direct solar access or thermal comfort. This different usage can sometimes be conflicting (for example at a building level, in order to maximize the photovoltaic production, it may be necessary to use all the surfaces, therefore preventing the access to daylight). The access to daylight in the street is appreciated during cold days, but shading is preferred during the hotter days.

Different parameters could contribute to the performance of Building Integrated Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic/Thermal (BISTPV/T) systems, for example amount of incident radiation, the location, the degree of semi-transparency of the PV system, orientation of the collector surface, and the mode of ventilation of the air within the double-skin facade (DSF). Nevertheless, the performance of the system could not be solely depended on energy efficiency but has to be analyzed in its entirety. Thus, exergy efficiency must be examined as well. The present work studies the exergy, exergoeconomic and enviroeconomic analysis of BISTPV/T system by natural ventilation. For a given meteorological conditions, the energy and exergy efficiency, net and ratio loss rate, CO2 emission and enviroeconomic reduction are calculated by solving a set of energy and exergy formulations. The results depicted that the BISTPV/T exhibits greater energy and exergy efficiency than the opaque BIPV/T, thus creating lower loss rate and eventually better impact economy and environment.

Dans le contexte de la transition énergétique, les installations solaires photovoltaïques de plusieurs hectares bénéficient d'une viabilité économique accrue du fait des gains d'échelle réalisables. Malgré la bonne fiabilité des modèles de production électrique à l'échelle locale (module photovoltaïque), l'hétérogénéité des conditions météorologiques à l'échelle de la centrale photovoltaïque entraîne une incertitude sur le productible réel. L'hétérogénéité de l'irradiation est ainsi de plus en plus étudiée numériquement et expérimentalement, et permet de pondérer le flux solaire reçu par les modules, notamment lorsque le ciel est partiellement nuageux. Cette technique permet de réguler le productible initialement estimé via des mesures localisées et ponctuelles. La modification du champ de vent à l'intérieur des parcs solaires est une seconde hétérogénéité qui amène une incertitude sur le mode de transfert convectif qui s'établit à l'échelle du module. Sachant que le rendement électrique des cellules en silicium est négativement corrélée à la température d'opération des jonctions, la détermination des modes convectifs au sein des centrales permet de mieux définir la température d'opération de chaque module et prédire plus précisément le productible électrique. La question de l'hétérogénéité induite par les effets aérauliques est cependant complexe à appréhender que ce soit expérimentalement et numériquement (nombre de mesures, positionnement des sondes, modélisation de la turbulence, de la dynamique et des flux thermiques turbulents). Dans ce travail, deux expériences numériques réalisées à l'aide du code de calcul CFD code saturne sont présentées. Dans un premier temps, un module unitaire est modélisé suivant une coupe 2-D. Celui-ci est soumis à un champ de vitesse de vent transversal et des conditions de périodicité permettent de simuler l'agencement d'une infinité de modules, en situation de centrale solaire. Une comparaison avec les champs de vent obtenus dans une configuration similaire en soufflerie est produite et une importante disparité des caractéristiques du vent sous les modules photovoltaïques est démontrée. The achievement of the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions set by the Paris Agreements and the Swiss federal law on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 law) requires massive use of renewable energies, which cannot be achieved without their adoption by the general public. The solar cadaster developed as part of the INTERREG G2 Solar project is intended to assess the solar potential of buildings at the scale of Greater Geneva—for both industrial buildings and for individual residential buildings—at a resolution of 1 m. The new version of the solar cadaster is intended to assess the solar potential of roofs, as well as that of vertical facades. The study presented here aims to validate this new version through a comparison with results obtained with two other simulation tools that are widely used and validated by the scientific community. The good accordance with the results obtained with ENVI-met and DIVA-for-Rhino demonstrates the capability of the radiative model developed for the solar cadaster of Greater Geneva to accurately predict the radiation levels of building facades in configurations with randomly distributed buildings (horizontally or vertically).

Numerical simulations of a spatially developing transitional flow in a vertical channel with one side uniformly heated and subjected to random velocity fluctuations at the inlet have been performed. Two characteristic frequency bands are observed in the flow, near the heated wall. The ability of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and the time-domain Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD) to decompose the flow is assessed, and SPOD is shown to be a powerful tool, as it is capable of separating the most energetic modes into two great families whose frequency content matches the frequency bands previously identified. The spatial structure of the modes is described, and their contribution to the turbulent heat transfer and velocity-temperature correlation is evaluated. Finally, the modes are linked to coherent structures that are observed in instantaneous visualizations of the flow, and a scenario of the development of the coherent structures in the laminar-turbulent transitional process is proposed.

La température d’opération des modules photovoltaïques est capitale dans la détermination du taux de conversion photo-électrique par la cellule sensible. A l’échelle du module, les échanges thermiques entre le système et l’environnement sont fortement dépendant de l’irradiation incidente et des phénomènes convectifs qui se développent sur les deux faces du système. Alors que l’irradiation incidente est globalement absorbée par le matériau, la détermination des phénomènes convectifs est complexifiée par la nature turbulente et intermittente du vent ainsi que par le couplage entre les modes de transferts (convection forcée, libre ou mixte).La principale méthode qui permet de déterminer précisément le flux de chaleur échangé avec l’environnement consiste en l’intégration de sonde de température à l’intérieur du module photovoltaïque couplé à un modèle thermique du module. Coûteuse et peu adaptable, celle-ci n’est pas envisageable pour toutes les installations industrielles. A contrario, l’utilisation de système fluxmétrique ouvrirait la voie à une mesure des transferts de chaleur par convection au niveau des surfaces des modules photovoltaïques en opération à moindre coût et avec un niveau de scalabilité suffisant pour permettre son utilisation à l’échelle d’une centrale industrielle. Dans ce travail, une méthodologie de mesure est proposée pour permettre l’utilisation de tels systèmes.Les essais sont menés sur un ensemble de 12 panneaux photovoltaïques représentant un fragment de centrale. Deux fluxmètres, commercialisés par la société CAPTEC, sont modifiés via l’ajout de couches de peintures pour obtenir des propriétés radiatives spécifiques dans le visible et dansl’infrarouge. Une mesure des propriétés spectrales est effectuée en laboratoire pour s’assurer du comportement radiatif des capteurs. Une stratégie d’installation minimisant l’ombrage des cellules est proposée, ce qui permet également de réduire l’impact du système de mesure sur le comportement thermique du module photovoltaïque.Cette instrumentation est complétée par des mesures de température de surface des panneaux photovoltaïques et des mesures des rayonnements incidents hémisphériques en courtes et grandes longueurs d’onde. Les données ainsi obtenues permettent d’estimer la part radiative intégrée dans la mesure du flux de chaleur global. De cette manière, les composantes radiatives et convectives peuvent être identifiées et caractérisées.Les premiers résultats tendent à montrer que la mesure du flux de chaleur total est réaliste en environnement réel, ce qui constituerait un apport vis-à-vis des formulations classiques largement répandues (concept de U-values). Il serait ainsi possible d’intégrer directement le flux de chaleur avecl’environnement comme condition limite des modèles thermiques à l’échelle du module. La liaison entre flux de chaleur mesuré et conditions météorologiques pourra également être proposée en fonction des données mesurées à proximité des centrales photovoltaïques industrielles (ensoleillement, température ambiante, vitesse du vent, humidité relative).Cette méthode ouvre de larges perspectives pour définir de manière plus précise et aux échelles de temps courts (autour de la minute) les échanges entre les modules en opération et leurs environnements proches. Ce gain de précision, couplé à la portabilité du système sur les centrales industrielles peut également permettre de réduire l’incertitude sur la prédiction de production électrique et de dégradation des modules.

La collecte solaire dépend de la capacité du module photovoltaïque à dissiper la chaleur absorbée avec son environnement. Dans le cas des centrales solaires flottantes, les premières études ont établi que les gains de production dus aux phénomènes convectifs sont plus importants au-dessus des lacs et des étangs comparativement à une centrale au sol. Cependant, les modes de transferts convectifs (naturels, forcés) sont difficiles à appréhender, et le formalisme adopté pour le quantifier (U-values) est trop imprécis pour permettre de conjecturer sur le poids de chaque type de transfert thermique dans la déperdition de chaleur constatée.Dans ces recherches, une méthode numérique permettant de qualifier et quantifier les gains liés à la convection autour des modules photovoltaïques flottants est présentée. Celle-ci est construite en deux étapes et repose sur la différenciation des dissipations thermiques à l’échelle du système. Dans un premier temps les effets convectifs sont dissociés des effets radiatifs, puis dans un second temps les deux modes de convections (naturelle, forcée) sont séparés. Prenant appuis sur un prototype instrumenté, une étude statistique sur un jeu de données est ensuite menée. Les corrélations qui décrivent les modes convectifs sont finalement discutées à la lueur de la comparaison modèle/expérience.Nos travaux montrent notamment que les cellules solaires bénéficient d’une convection forcée majorée de 5 à 20% dans une situation de photovoltaïque flottant. Ces gains sont aussi le résultat d’un système de flottaison ouvert qui permet au vent de souffler sur la face avant et sur la face arrière des modules. En particulier, la déperdition thermique est fortement majorée lorsque le mode de transfert convectif naturel (en face arrière) prédomine. Ces résultats pourraient permettre d’optimiser la géométrie des systèmes de flottaison et en conséquence la production d’électricité de la centrale.

The impact of the external thermal stratification on the flow behavior and the mass flow rate in an open ended vertical channel with one side uniformly heated is investigated experimentally and numerically. Both experimental and numerical studies show that the increase of the external stratification lowers the velocity and the mass flow rate but also displaces the transition height at a lower location in the channel. The numerical model was used to study the cases of weak and negative thermal stratifications which are barely achievable in non-controlled experimental laboratory conditions but are common in the atmosphere. Different flow regimes are identified with flow being fully laminar when the stratification is weak or negative and flow being transitional to turbulent for higher stratifications. Finally, the numerically obtained mass flow rates with the various external thermal stratifications are shown to be in excellent agreement with a theoretical model developed in a previous work.

The main objective of this study is to develop a novel photovoltaic thermal collector (PVT) to improve the electrical and thermal efficiencies of the solar collector. The goal is to maximize the electrical power and minimize the thermal losses of the solar panel. A novel photovoltaic thermal collector is designed and tested. The new PVT collector includes: (1) An optical anti-reflective and low-emissivity coating to reduce the radiation losses; (2) A thermal resistance to reduce the conduction losses between the photovoltaic and absorber plate; and (3) A channel heat exchanger to decrease the thermal losses between the solar cells and the cooling fluid. A transient two-dimension multi-physics model for the PVT sheet-tube and the advanced PVT collector is developed. The state variable variations are predicted by the finite volume method. A comparison between the two considered hybrid collectors in terms of thermal and electrical efficiencies and temperature distribution is performed. Moreover, the impact of arrangement (anti-reflective and low-emissivity coating, thermal resistance between the absorber plate and the cooling fluid, enhanced exchange surface area between the flat plat exchanger and the cooling fluid) on the new PVT collector is studied and analyzed. The simulation results showed clearly the advantages of using this evolution of the PVT collector compared to the basic one. Indeed, this new PVT configuration represents a series of improvements that lead to a lower PV module and higher fluid operating temperatures. Higher electrical and thermal efficiencies for the proposed PVT (15.4%, 73%) are obtained compared to the basic PVT collector (13.7%, 58%), respectively under no loss and standard test conditions.

This paper investigates an innovative earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE), namely the geothermal foundation Fondatherm®. This system solves numerous technical problems inherent to a traditional EAHE. However, an accurate understanding of its thermal behavior is crucial to ensure the best energy gain and its economic viability. This current paper focuses on a numerical study of the ventilated foundation. A time-dependent three-dimensional finite volume numerical model is developed. This model considers coupled heat and moisture transfers as well as complex boundary conditions such as the weather, the building and the water table simultaneous influences. A matric-head based system of equations is used to represent the heat, vapor and liquid transfers within the soil. It is combined to a capillary pressure-based formulation of the heat and vapor balance equation for the concrete foundation. Furthermore, a numerical method built on a switching from a potential- to a flux-based system of equations is proposed. It is added to a variable time-step method of resolution and allow to handle the greatest hygric loads variations at the ground surface. The numerical code is successfully validated against analytical solutions for simple cases, and against experimental and in situ measurements.

37th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1772-1776, Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) has recently gained a large interest worldwide, essentially as a result of promoting unused land to generate electricity. Like ground-mounted PV projects, FPV feasibility is bound to the power production estimation. Considering a production gain of 0.4% per °C for silicium cells, in addition of cooler local climate over waterbodies, predicting the thermal behavior of PV modules through modelling system arises as a stepping-stone of the next FPV commercial stage. In that context, EDF has launched a floating structure with numbers of high-frequency sensors in order to catch the evolution of interesting physical parameters, contrasting with parameters encountered over ground-mounted structures. To support previous research under tropical conditions, six months of data have been gathered during a cold period of temperate area. Discernable cooling effects were less frequent and profited of lower magnitude in such area. In addition, waterbody physical behavior was highlighted as an important catalyst of module temperature behavior. Thus, global climate conditions emerged as a key factor of cooling effect estimation for FPV. Finally, predicting module temperature has been managed through existing thermal model including in the in-house 3D-ray tracing software PVNOV.

International audience; A spatially developing transitional flow in a vertical channel with one side heated uniformly and subjected to random velocity fluctuations at theinlet is investigated in this experimental and numerical study. Two Rayleigh numbers are studied. Experimentally, Particle Image Velocimetry is used to obtain a complete two-dimensional velocity field of the streamwise flow development. A three-dimensional Large-Eddy-Simulation investigation isalso performed to obtain a complete streamwise evolution of the flow. The results allow the denition of three transition indicators on the basis of thetime-averaged velocities and temperatures elds as well as on the turbulent statistics of the flow. The detailed experimental and numerical spatial development of the transitional natural convective flow is then presented and the ability of the indicators to capture the early and the advanced stages of the transition is assessed. The numerical simulations were performed on the assumptions of a thermally stratied environment, submitted to an environmental noise, and for which wall to wall radiations were considered. These conditions aim at representing realistic experimental conditions.
