Quantum tunneling is a valuable resource exploited by quantum annealers to solve complex optimization problems. Tunneling events also occur during projective quantum Monte Carlo (PQMC) simulations, and in a class of problems characterized by a double-well energy landscape their rate was found to scale linearly with the first energy gap, i.e., even more favorably than in physical quantum annealers, where the rate scales with the gap squared. Here we investigate how a guiding wave function --- which is essential to make many-body PQMC simulations computationally feasible --- affects the tunneling rate. The chosen testbeds are a continuous-space double-well problem, the ferromagnetic quantum Ising chain, and the recently introduced shamrock model. As guiding wave function, we consider an approximate Boltzmann-type ansatz, the numerically-exact ground state of the double-well model, and a neural-network wave function based on a Boltzmann machine. Remarkably, for each ansatz we find the same asymptotic linear scaling of the tunneling rate that was previously found in the PQMC simulations performed without a guiding wave function. We also provide a semiclassical theory for the double-well with exact guiding wave function that explains the observed linear scaling. These findings suggest that PQMC simulations guided by an accurate ansatz represent a valuable benchmark for physical quantum annealers and a potentially competitive quantum-inspired optimization technique., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We consider a lattice version of the Bisognano-Wichmann (BW) modular Hamiltonian as an ansatz for the bipartite entanglement Hamiltonian of the quantum critical chains. Using numerically unbiased methods, we check the accuracy of the BW-ansatz by both comparing the BW R\'enyi entropy to the exact results, and by investigating the size scaling of the norm distance between the exact reduced density matrix and the BW one. Our study encompasses a variety of models, scanning different universality classes, including transverse field Ising, Potts and XXZ chains. We show that the R\'enyi entropies obtained via the BW ansatz properly describe the scaling properties predicted by conformal field theory. Remarkably, the BW R\'enyi entropies faithfully capture also the corrections to the conformal field theory scaling associated to the energy density operator. In addition, we show that the norm distance between the discretized BW density matrix and the exact one asymptotically goes to zero with the system size: this indicates that the BW-ansatz can be also employed to predict properties of the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrices, and is thus potentially applicable to other entanglement-related quantities such as negativity.

We present a method to measure the von Neumann entanglement entropy of ground states of quantum many-body systems which does not require access to the system wave function. The technique is based on a direct thermodynamic study of entanglement Hamiltonians, whose functional form is available from field theoretical insights. The method is applicable to classical simulations such as quantum Monte Carlo methods, and to experiments that allow for thermodynamic measurements such as the density of states, accessible via quantum quenches. We benchmark our technique on critical quantum spin chains, and apply it to several two-dimensional quantum magnets, where we are able to unambiguously determine the onset of area law in the entanglement entropy, the number of Goldstone bosons, and to check a recent conjecture on geometric entanglement contribution at critical points described by strongly coupled field theories.

We introduce a method for the search of parent Hamiltonians of input wave-functions based on the structure of their reduced density matrix. The two key elements of our recipe are an ansatz on the relation between reduced density matrix and parent Hamiltonian that is exact at the field theory level, and a minimization procedure on the space of relative entropies, which is particularly convenient due to its convexity. As examples, we show how our method correctly reconstructs the parent Hamiltonian correspondent to several non-trivial ground state wave functions, including conformal and symmetry-protected-topological phases, and quantum critical points of two-dimensional antiferromagnets described by strongly coupled field theories. The modular (or entanglement) Hamiltonian correspondent to the half-space-bipartition of a quantum state uniquely characterizes its entanglement properties. However, in the context of lattice models, its explicit form is analytically known only for the Ising chain and certain free theories in one-dimension. In this work, we provide a throughout investigation of entanglement Hamiltonians in lattice models obtained via the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, which provides an explicit functional form for the entanglement Hamiltonian itself in quantum field theory. Our study encompasses a variety of one- and two-dimensional models, supporting diverse quantum phases and critical points, and, most importantly, scanning several universality classes, including Ising, Potts, and Luttinger liquids. We carry out extensive numerical simulations based on the density-matrix-renormalization-group method, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo. In particular, we compare the exact entanglement properties and correlation functions to those obtained applying the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem on the lattice. We carry out this comparison on both the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the entanglement Hamiltonian, and expectation values of correlation functions and order parameters. Our results evidence that, as long as the low-energy description of the lattice model is well-captured by a Lorentz-invariant quantum field theory, the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem provides a qualitatively and quantitatively accurate description of the lattice entanglement Hamiltonian. In simple ferromagnetic quantum Ising models characterized by an effective double-well energy landscape the characteristic tunneling time of path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations has been shown to scale as the incoherent quantum-tunneling time, i.e., as $1/\Delta^2$, where $\Delta$ is the tunneling gap. Since incoherent quantum tunneling is employed by quantum annealers (QAs) to solve optimization problems, this result suggests there is no quantum advantage in using QAs w.r.t. quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. A counterexample is the recently introduced shamrock model, where topological obstructions cause an exponential slowdown of the PIMC tunneling dynamics with respect to incoherent quantum tunneling, leaving the door open for potential quantum speedup, even for stoquastic models. In this work, we investigate the tunneling time of projective QMC simulations based on the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) algorithm without guiding functions, showing that it scales as $1/\Delta$, i.e., even more favorably than the incoherent quantum-tunneling time, both in a simple ferromagnetic system and in the more challenging shamrock model. However a careful comparison between the DMC ground-state energies and the exact solution available for the transverse-field Ising chain points at an exponential scaling of the computational cost required to keep a fixed relative error as the system size increases., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures
