This study investigates the reconstruction of climatological patterns and vegetation dynamics in the Horn of Africa region using high temporal resolution (i.e. daily) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) datasets. The analysis compares a straight-forward processing approach to derive a daily vegetation index from a geostationary (SEVIRI) satellite with existing NDVI series from geostationary or polar-orbiting (MODIS, MetOp-AVHRR) satellites, highlighting the impact of cloud contamination on data quality in high temporal resolution datasets. Using a smoothing process designed to reconstruct the upper envelope of the vegetation status series, we obtained a daily vegetation dataset that effectively mitigated cloud-induced fluctuations, outperforming polar-orbiting (e.g. MODIS) satellite-derived dataset in capturing regional climatology. We demonstrated this through statistical analysis, including autocorrelation and mean absolute difference between consecutive observations. We showed that cloud contamination significantly affects high temporal resolution NDVI series, particularly in forest areas, which makes it difficult to identify a suitable dataset to validate our approach. Therefore, we mitigated this problem using a Maximum Value Compositing technique, designed to remove cloud-induced biases and further compared our results with another independent vegetation index at coarser temporal resolution derived from AVHRR. We found that our vegetation index closely relates with MODIS 10-day composites after removing cloud-contaminated pixels. Furthermore, the study evaluates the sensitivity of the selected NDVI datasets to drought events, demonstrating the strength of the proposed SEVIRI dataset in capturing the intensity and persistence of vegetation anomalies. In conclusion, the study presents an innovative strategy for deriving daily-resolution NDVI datasets in cloud-prone regions, validating it with independent datasets at different sub-monthly temporal scales.

The aim of this study is to highlight the issue of missed supercooled liquid water (SLW) detection in the current radar/lidar derived products and to investigate the potential of the combined use of the EarthCARE mission and the Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS)—Microwave Radiometer (MWR) observations to fill this observational gap and to improve snowfall retrieval capabilities. The presence of SLW layers, which is typical of snowing clouds at high latitudes, represents a significant challenge for snowfall retrieval based on passive microwave (PMW) observations. The strong emission effect of SLW has the potential to mask the snowflake scattering signal in the high-frequency channels (>90 GHz) exploited for snowfall retrieval, while the detection capability of the combined radar/lidar SLW product—which is currently used as reference for the PMW-based snowfall retrieval algorithm—is limited to the cloud top due to SLW signal attenuation. In this context, EarthCARE, which is equipped with both a radar and a lidar, and the AWS-MWR, whose channels cover a range from 50 GHz to 325.15 GHz, offer a unique opportunity to improve both SLW detection and snowfall retrieval. In the current study, a case study is analyzed by comparing available PMW observations with AWS-MWR simulated signals for different scenarios of SLW layers, and an extensive comparison of the CloudSat brightness temperature (TB) product with the corresponding simulated signal is carried out. Simulated TBs are obtained from a radiative transfer model applied to cloud and precipitation profiles derived from the algorithm developed for the EarthCARE mission (CAPTIVATE). Different single scattering models are considered. This analysis highlights the missed detection of SLW layers embedded by the radar/lidar product and the sensitivity of AWS-MWR channels to SLW. Moreover, the new AWS 325.15 GHz channels are very sensitive to snowflakes in the atmosphere, and unaffected by SLW. Therefore, their combination with EarthCARE radar/lidar measurements can be exploited to both improve snowfall retrieval capabilities and to constrain snowfall microphysical properties.

The accurate prediction of heavy precipitation in convective environments is crucial because such events, often occurring in Italy during the summer and fall seasons, can be a threat for people and properties. In this paper, we analyse the impact of satellite-derived surface-rainfall-rate data assimilation on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model’s precipitation prediction, considering 15 days in summer 2022 and 17 days in fall 2022, where moderate to intense precipitation was observed over Italy. A 3DVar realised at CNR-ISAC (National Research Council of Italy, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate) is used to assimilate two different satellite-derived rain rate products, both exploiting geostationary (GEO), infrared (IR), and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) microwave (MW) measurements: One is based on an artificial neural network (NN), and the other one is the operational P-IN-SEVIRI-PMW product (H60), delivered in near-real time by the EUMETSAT HSAF (Satellite Application Facility in Support of Operational Hydrology and Water Management). The forecast is verified in two periods: the hours from 1 to 4 (1–4 h phase) and the hours from 3 to 6 (3–6 h phase) after the assimilation. The results show that the rain rate assimilation improves the precipitation forecast in both seasons and for both forecast phases, even if the improvement in the 3–6 h phase is found mainly in summer. The assimilation of H60 produces a high number of false alarms, which has a negative impact on the forecast, especially for intense events (30 mm/3 h). The assimilation of the NN rain rate gives more balanced predictions, improving the control forecast without significantly increasing false alarms.

The estimate of precipitation from satellite measurements is an indirect estimate if compared to rain gauges or disdrometer measurements, but it has the advantage of complete coverage over oceans, mountainous regions, and sparsely populated areas where other sources of precipitation data (e.g., weather radar) are unavailable or unreliable. Among the satellite-based precipitation estimates, geostationary (GEO) data ensure the highest spatial and temporal resolution. At the same time, the IR/VIS channels deployed on GEO satellites have lower capabilities than microwave (MW) channels in characterizing the cloud structure. Machine learning (ML) techniques can be considered a powerful tool to overcome the limitations related to the physical relationship between IR/VIS channels and precipitation estimation. This study describes the development of a convolutional neural network (U-Net) to retrieve the precipitation rate using IR measurements only from the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. Its performances are evaluated through a comparison with H SAF and NASA operational products (e.g., H60B or H03B and IMERG-E, respectively), of which the algorithms are based on different principles. The results highlight a lower error in precipitation rate estimates for the U-Net with respect to the other products but also some issues in correctly estimating the more intense precipitation (>5 mmh−1). On the other hand, the precipitation detection capabilities of the U-Net outperform the H SAF products for lower precipitation rate, while IMERG-E shows the best performance regardless of the precipitation regime. Furthermore, the U-Net is able to account for and correct the parallax displacement that affects the measurement as the satellite viewing angle increases.

Mediterranean hurricanes (Medicanes) are characterized by the presence of a quasi-cloud-free calm eye, spiral-like cloud bands, and strong winds around the vortex center. Typically, they reach a tropical-like cyclone (TLC) phase characterized by an axisymmetric warm core without frontal structures. Yet, some of them are not fully symmetrical, have a shallow warm-core structure, and a weak frontal activity. Finding a clear definition and potential classification of Medicanes based on their initiation and intensification processes, understanding the role of convection, and identifying the evolution to a TLC phase are all current research topics. In this study, passive microwave (PMW) measurements and products are used to characterize warm core (WC) and deep convection (DC) for six Medicanes that occurred between 2014 and 2021. A well-established methodology for tropical cyclones, based on PMW temperature sounding channels, is used to identify the WC while PMW diagnostic tools and products (e.g., cloud-top height (CTH) and ice water path (IWP)), combined with lightning data, are used for DC detection and characterization. The application of this methodology to Medicanes highlights the possibility to describe their WC depth, intensity, and symmetry and to identify the cyclone center. We also analyze to what extent the occurrence and characteristics of the WC are related to the Medicane’s intensity and DC development. The results show that Medicanes reaching full TLC phase are associated with deep and symmetric WCs, and that asymmetric DC features in the proximity of the center, and in higher CTH and IWP values, with scarce lighting activity. Medicanes that never develop to a fully TLC structure are associated with a shallower WC, weaker and more sparse DC activity, and lower CTHs and IWP values. Ultimately, this study illustrates the potential of PMW radiometry in providing insights into dynamic and thermodynamic processes associated with Medicanes’ WC characteristics and evolution to TLCs, thus contributing to the ongoing discussion about Medicanes’ definition.

This article describes the development of a machine learning (ML)-based algorithm for snowfall retrieval (Snow retrievaL ALgorithm fOr gpM–Cross Track, SLALOM-CT), exploiting ATMS radiometer measurements and using the CloudSat CPR snowfall products as references. During a preliminary analysis, different ML techniques (tree-based algorithms, shallow and convolutional neural networks—NNs) were intercompared. A large dataset (three years) of coincident observations from CPR and ATMS was used for training and testing the different techniques. The SLALOM-CT algorithm is based on four independent modules for the detection of snowfall and supercooled droplets, and for the estimation of snow water path and snowfall rate. Each module was designed by choosing the best-performing ML approach through model selection and optimization. While a convolutional NN was the most accurate for the snowfall detection module, a shallow NN was selected for all other modules. SLALOM-CT showed a high degree of consistency with CPR. Moreover, the results were almost independent of the background surface categorization and the observation angle. The reliability of the SLALOM-CT estimates was also highlighted by the good results obtained from a direct comparison with a reference algorithm (GPROF).

Tropical-like cyclone (TLC or medicane) Ianos formed during mid-September 2020 over the Southern Mediterranean Sea, and, during its mature stage on days 17–18, it affected southern Italy and especially Greece and its Ionian islands, where it brought widespread disruption due to torrential rainfall, severe wind gusts, and landslides, causing casualties. This study performs a sensitivity analysis of the mature phase of TLC Ianos with the WRF model to different microphysics parameterization schemes and initial and boundary condition (IBC) datasets. Satellite measurements from the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission-Core Observatory (GPM-CO) dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) sea-surface wind field were used to verify the WRF model forecast quality. Results show that the model is most sensitive to the nature of the IBC dataset (spatial resolution and other dynamical and physical differences), which better defines the primary mesoscale features of Ianos (low-level vortex, eyewall, and main rainband structure) when using those at higher resolution (~25 km versus ~50 km) independently of the microphysics scheme, but with the downside of producing too much convection and excessively low minimum surface pressures. On the other hand, no significant differences emerged among their respective trajectories. All experiments overestimated the vertical extension of the main rainbands and display a tendency to shift the system to the west/northwest of the actual position. Especially among the experiments with the higher-resolution IBCs, the more complex WRF microphysics schemes (Thompson and Morrison) tended to outperform the others in terms of rain rate forecast and most of the other variables examined. Furthermore, WSM6 showed a good performance while WDM6 was generally the least accurate. Lastly, the calculation of the cyclone phase space diagram confirmed that all simulations triggered a warm-core storm, and all but one also exhibited axisymmetry at some point of the studied lifecycle.

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) (Ku- and Ka-band, or 14 and 35 GHz) provides the capability to resolve the precipitation structure under moderate to heavy precipitation conditions. In this manuscript, the use of near-coincident observations between GPM and the CloudSat Profiling Radar (CPR) (W-band, or 94 GHz) are demonstrated to extend the capability of representing light rain and cold-season precipitation from DPR and the GPM passive microwave constellation sensors. These unique triple-frequency data have opened up applications related to cold-season precipitation, ice microphysics, and light rainfall and surface emissivity effects.

Since early March 2014, the NASA/JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement Core- Observatory (GPM-CO) satellite has allowed analysis of precipitation systems around the globe, thanks to the capabilities of the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) and Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). In this work, we demonstrate how GPM-CO measurements obtained from 4 years of observations over the Mediterranean area can be used as an extremely effective tool to study the main climatological characteristics of the most intense Mediterranean storm structures. DPR and GMI-based Precipitation Features (PFs) parameters are used as proxies of the vertical structure and microphysical properties of these events, and their statistical distribution is analyzed to identify extremes. The analysis of annual, seasonal and geographical distribution of the identified deep convective systems highlights substantial differences in their diurnal cycle and in the distribution between land-sea and summer-winter. There is a general shift of the convective systems from the south (mostly over the sea) in the cold season, to the north (mostly over land) in the warm season. The analysis shows also that the inferred convective intensity is not always related to heavy precipitation. Known DPR and GMI-based criteria were adopted to identify overshooting top events and potential hailstorms, identify extreme deep convection signatures, like those observed for tropical and subtropical systems, and the most intense occur mostly over the sea. Although the analysis is limited to four years, the results show that the GPM-CO offers unprecedented measurements to identify and characterize extreme weather events in the Mediterranean region, with unique potentials for future long-term climatology and interannual variability analysis.

This paper describes the Passive microwave Neural network Precipitation Retrieval algorithm for climate applications (PNPR-CLIM), developed with funding from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by ECMWF on behalf of the European Union. The algorithm has been designed and developed to exploit the two cross-track scanning microwave radiometers, AMSU-B and MHS, towards the creation of a long-term (2000–2017) global precipitation climate data record (CDR) for the ECMWF Climate Data Store (CDS). The algorithm has been trained on an observational dataset built from one year of MHS and GPM-CO Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) coincident observations. The dataset includes the Fundamental Climate Data Record (FCDR) of AMSU-B and MHS brightness temperatures, provided by the Fidelity and Uncertainty in Climate data records from Earth Observation (FIDUCEO) project, and the DPR-based surface precipitation rate estimates used as reference. The combined use of high quality, calibrated and harmonized long-term input data (provided by the FIDUCEO microwave brightness temperature Fundamental Climate Data Record) with the exploitation of the potential of neural networks (ability to learn and generalize) has made it possible to limit the use of ancillary model-derived environmental variables, thus reducing the model uncertainties’ influence on the PNPR-CLIM, which could compromise the accuracy of the estimates. The PNPR-CLIM estimated precipitation distribution is in good agreement with independent DPR-based estimates. A multiscale assessment of the algorithm’s performance is presented against high quality regional ground-based radar products and global precipitation datasets. The regional and global three-year (2015–2017) verification analysis shows that, despite the simplicity of the algorithm in terms of input variables and processing performance, the quality of PNPR-CLIM outperforms NASA GPROF in terms of rainfall detection, while in terms of rainfall quantification they are comparable. The global analysis evidences weaknesses at higher latitudes and in the winter at mid latitudes, mainly linked to the poorer quality of the precipitation retrieval in cold/dry conditions.

Lightning data assimilation (LDA) is a powerful tool to improve the weather forecast of convective events and has been widely applied with this purpose in the past two decades. Most of these applications refer to events hitting coastal and land areas, where people live. However, a weather forecast over the sea has many important practical applications, and this paper focuses on the impact of LDA on the precipitation forecast over the central Mediterranean Sea around Italy. The 3 h rapid update cycle (RUC) configuration of the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model) has been used to simulate the whole month of November 2019. Two sets of forecasts have been considered: CTRL, without lightning data assimilation, and LIGHT, which assimilates data from the LIghtning detection NETwork (LINET). The 3 h precipitation forecast has been compared with observations of the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) (IMERG) dataset and with rain gauge observations recorded in six small Italian islands. The comparison of CTRL and LIGHT precipitation forecasts with the IMERG dataset shows a positive impact of LDA. The correlation between predicted and observed precipitation improves over wide areas of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas when LDA is applied. Specifically, the correlation coefficient for the whole domain increases from 0.59 to 0.67, and the anomaly correlation (AC) improves by 5% over land and by 8% over the sea when lightning is assimilated. The impact of LDA on the 3 h precipitation forecast over six small islands is also positive. LDA improves the forecast by both decreasing the false alarms and increasing the hits of the precipitation forecast, although with variability among the islands. The case study of 12 November 2019 (time interval 00–03 UTC) has been used to show how important the impact of LDA can be in practice. In particular, the shifting of the main precipitation pattern from land to the sea caused by LDA gives a much better representation of the precipitation field observed by the IMERG precipitation product.

The quantification of global snowfall by the current observing system remains challenging, with the CloudSat 94 GHz Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) providing the current state-of-the-art snow climatology, especially at high latitudes. This work explores the potential of the novel Level-2 CloudSat 94 GHz Brightness Temperature Product (2B-TB94), developed in recent years by processing the noise floor data contained in the 1B-CPR product; the focus of the study is on the characterization of snow systems over the ice-free ocean, which has well constrained emissivity and backscattering properties. When used in combination with the path integrated attenuation (PIA), the radiometric mode can provide crucial information on the presence/amount of supercooled layers and on the contribution of the ice to the total attenuation. Radiative transfer simulations show that the location of the supercooled layers and the snow density are important factors affecting the warming caused by supercooled emission and the cooling induced by ice scattering. Over the ice-free ocean, the inclusion of the 2B-TB94 observations to the standard CPR observables (reflectivity profile and PIA) is recommended, should more sophisticated attenuation corrections be implemented in the snow CloudSat product to mitigate its well-known underestimation at large snowfall rates. Similar approaches will also be applicable to the upcoming EarthCARE mission. The findings of this paper are relevant for the design of future missions targeting precipitation in the polar regions.

The first Special Observation Period (SOP1) field campaign of the HyMeX (HYdrological cycle in the Mediterranean EXperiment) program was held in fall 2012 and was devoted to the investigation of heavy precipitation and floods in the Western Mediterranean. Both the Italian research and operational meteorological communities actively participated by providing a valuable contribution through the organization of an ad hoc national Operational Centre. The paper presents an overview of this participation, resulting in a fruitful multidisciplinary experience able to build a bridge between academia, researchers, forecasters, end-users and decision makers. The benefits provided by the wide national involvement and the consequent possible national impacts and progress are discussed within the context of the complex organization of meteorology in Italy.

This study shows how satellite-based passive and active microwave (MW) sensors can be used in conjunction with high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) simulations to provide insights of the precipitation structure of the tropical-like cyclone (TLC) Numa, which occurred on 15−19 November 2017. The goal of the paper is to characterize and monitor the precipitation at the different stages of its evolution from development to TLC phase, throughout the storm transition over the Mediterranean Sea. Observations by the NASA/JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory (GPM-CO) and by the GPM constellation of MW radiometers are used, in conjunction with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) simulations. The GPM-CO measurements are used to analyze the passive MW radiometric response to the microphysical structure of the storm, while the comparison between successive MW radiometer overpasses shows the evolution of Numa precipitation structure from its early development stage on the Ionian Sea into its TLC phase, as it persists over southern coast of Italy (Apulia region) for several hours. Measurements evidence stronger convective activity at the development phase compared to the TLC phase, when strengthening or weakening phases in the eye development, and the occurrence of warm rain processes in the areas surrounding the eye, are identified. The weak scattering and polarization signal at and above 89 GHz, the lack of scattering signal at 37 GHz, and the absence of electrical activity in correspondence of the rainbands during the TLC phase, indicate weak convection and the presence of supercooled cloud droplets at high levels. RAMS high-resolution simulations support what inferred from the observations, evidencing Numa TLC characteristics (closed circulation around a warm core, low vertical wind shear, intense surface winds, heavy precipitation), persisting for more than 24 h. Moreover, the implementation of DPR 3D reflectivity field in the RAMS data assimilation system shows a small (but non negligible) impact on the precipitation forecast over the sea up to a few hours after the DPR overpass.

The uncertainties associated with rainfall estimates comprise various measurement scales: from rain gauges and ground-based radars to the satellite rainfall retrievals. The quality of satellite rainfall products has improved significantly in recent decades; however, such algorithms require validation studies using observational rainfall data. For this reason, this study aims to apply the H-SAF consolidated radar data processing to the X-band radar used in the CHUVA campaigns and apply the well established H-SAF validation procedure to these data and verify the quality of EUMETSAT H-SAF operational passive microwave precipitation products in two regions of Brazil (Vale do Paraíba and Manaus). These products are based on two rainfall retrieval algorithms: the physically based Bayesian Cloud Dynamics and Radiation Database (CDRD algorithm) for SSMI/S sensors and the Passive microwave Neural network Precipitation Retrieval algorithm (PNPR) for cross-track scanning radiometers (AMSU-A/AMSU-B/MHS sensors) and for the ATMS sensor. These algorithms, optimized for Europe, Africa and the Southern Atlantic region, provide estimates for the MSG full disk area. Firstly, the radar data was treated with an overall quality index which includes corrections for different error sources like ground clutter, range distance, rain-induced attenuation, among others. Different polarimetric and non-polarimetric QPE algorithms have been tested and the Vulpiani algorithm (hereafter, R q 2 V u 15 ) presents the best precipitation retrievals when compared with independent rain gauges. Regarding the results from satellite-based algorithms, generally, all rainfall retrievals tend to detect a larger precipitation area than the ground-based radar and overestimate intense rain rates for the Manaus region. Such behavior is related to the fact that the environmental and meteorological conditions of the Amazon region are not well represented in the algorithms. Differently, for the Vale do Paraíba region, the precipitation patterns were well detected and the estimates are in accordance with the reference as indicated by the low mean bias values.

This work proposes a multi-parameter method for the detection of cloud-to-ground stroke rate (SRCG) associated to convective cells, based on the measurements of a low-cost single-polarization X-band weather radar. To train and test our procedure, we built up a multi-year dataset, collecting 1575 radar reflectivity volumes that were acquired in the pilot study area of Naples metropolitan environment matched with the LIghtning NETwork (LINET) strokes and meteorological in-situ data. Three radar-based variables are extracted simultaneously for each rain cell and properly merged together, using “ad hoc„ classification methods, to produce an estimation of the expected lightning activity for each rain cell. These variables, proxies of mixed-phase particles and ice amount into a convective cell, are combined into a single label to cluster the SRCG into two categories: SRCG = 0 (no production of strokes) or SRCG > 0 (stroke production), respectively. Overall, the main results are comparable with those that were obtained from more advanced radar systems, showing a Critical Success Index of 0.53, an Equitable Threat Score of 0.34, a Frequency Bias Index of 1.00, a Heidke Skill Score of 0.42, a Hanssen-Kuiper Skill Score of 0.42, and an area under the curve of probability of detection as a function of false alarm rate (usually referred as ROC curve) equal to 0.78. The developed technique, although with some limitations, outperforms those based on the use of single stroke proxy parameters.

This paper describes a new algorithm that is able to detect snowfall and retrieve the associated snow water path (SWP), for any surface type, using the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI). The algorithm is tuned and evaluated against coincident observations of the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) onboard CloudSat. It is composed of three modules for (i) snowfall detection, (ii) supercooled droplet detection and (iii) SWP retrieval. This algorithm takes into account environmental conditions to retrieve SWP and does not rely on any surface classification scheme. The snowfall detection module is able to detect 83% of snowfall events including light SWP (down to 1 × 10−3 kg·m−2) with a false alarm ratio of 0.12. The supercooled detection module detects 97% of events, with a false alarm ratio of 0.05. The SWP estimates show a relative bias of −11%, a correlation of 0.84 and a root mean square error of 0.04 kg·m−2. Several applications of the algorithm are highlighted: Three case studies of snowfall events are investigated, and a 2-year high resolution 70°S–70°N snowfall occurrence distribution is presented. These results illustrate the high potential of this algorithm for snowfall detection and SWP retrieval using GMI.

This paper describes a new rainfall rate retrieval algorithm, developed within the EUMETSAT H SAF program, based on the Passive microwave Neural network Precipitation Retrieval approach (PNPR v3), designed to work with the conically scanning Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI). A new rain/no-rain classification scheme, also based on the NN approach, which provides different rainfall masks for different minimum thresholds and degree of reliability, is also described. The algorithm is trained on an extremely large observational database, built from GPM global observations between 2014 and 2016, where the NASA 2B-CMB (V04) rainfall rate product is used as reference. In order to assess the performance of PNPR v3 over the globe, an independent part of the observational database is used in a verification study. The good results found over all surface types (CC > 0.90, ME < −0.22 mm h−1, RMSE < 2.75 mm h−1 and FSE% < 100% for rainfall rates lower than 1 mm h−1 and around 30–50% for moderate to high rainfall rates), demonstrate the good outcome of the input selection procedure, as well as of the training and design phase of the neural network. For further verification, two case studies over Italy are also analysed and a good consistency of PNPR v3 retrievals with simultaneous ground radar observations and with the GMI GPROF V05 estimates is found. PNPR v3 is a global rainfall retrieval algorithm, able to optimally exploit the GMI multi-channel response to different surface types and precipitation structures, that provide global rainfall retrieval in a computationally very efficient way, making the product suitable for near-real time operational applications.

The sensitivity of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) high-frequency channels to snowfall at higher latitudes (around 60°N/S) is investigated using coincident CloudSat observations. The 166 GHz channel is highlighted throughout the study due to its ice scattering sensitivity and polarization information. The analysis of three case studies evidences the important combined role of total precipitable water (TPW), supercooled cloud water, and background surface composition on the brightness temperature (TB) behavior for different snow-producing clouds. A regression tree statistical analysis applied to the entire GMI-CloudSat snowfall dataset indicates which variables influence the 166 GHz polarization difference (166 ∆TB) and its relation to snowfall. Critical thresholds of various parameters (sea ice concentration (SIC), TPW, ice water path (IWP)) are established for optimal snowfall detection capabilities. The 166 ∆TB can identify snowfall events over land and sea when critical thresholds are exceeded (TPW > 3.6 kg·m−2, IWP > 0.24 kg·m−2 over land, and SIC > 57%, TPW > 5.1 kg·m−2 over sea). The complex combined 166 ∆TB-TB relationship at higher latitudes and the impact of supercooled water vertical distribution are also investigated. The findings presented in this study can be exploited to improve passive microwave snowfall detection algorithms.
