Abstract Parthenogenesis, or virgin birth, describes a mode of reproduction where an egg develops into an offspring without fertilization, and is observed across various vertebrate taxa, excluding mammals. Obligate parthenogenesis, found in around 100 vertebrate species and 1000 invertebrate species, is relatively rare. Conversely, facultative parthenogenesis, where females can reproduce both sexually and parthenogenetically, is observed in some vertebrates, including elasmobranchs. Notably, this phenomenon in elasmobranchs is mainly documented in captivity, allowing for detailed long-term observation. Specifically, this study reports the first case of facultative parthenogenesis in the common smooth-hound shark Mustelus mustelus, a species classified by IUCN as endangered. Here we show that the juvenile M. mustelus were born through parthenogenesis, exhibiting homozygosity at each genetic marker, consistent with terminal fusion automixis. Remarkably, this finding reveals that parthenogenesis can occur annually in these sharks, alternating between two females, and conclusively excludes long-term sperm storage as a cause. Consequently, this enhances our understanding of parthenogenesis in elasmobranchs and highlights the reproductive flexibility of M. mustelus. Overall, these results contribute to our broader understanding of reproductive strategies in elasmobranchs, which could inform conservation efforts for endangered species.

IntroductionRadiobiological studies at low dose rates allow us to improve our knowledge of the mechanisms by which radiation exerts its effects on biological systems following chronic exposures. Moreover, these studies can complement available epidemiological data on the biological effects of low doses and dose rates of ionizing radiation. Very few studies have simultaneously compared the biological effects of low- and high-LET radiations at the same dose rate for chronic irradiation.MethodsWe compared, for the first time in the same experiment, the effects of chronic (dose rates as low as ~18 and 5 mGy/h) and acute irradiations on clonogenicity and micronucleus formation in AG1522 normal human skin fibroblasts in the confluent state exposed to doses of low- and high-LET radiation (gamma rays and alpha particles) to investigate any differences due to the different radiation quality and different dose rate (in the dose range 0.006–0.9 Gy for alpha particles and 0.4–2.3 Gy for gamma rays).ResultsAs expected, alpha particles were more effective than gamma rays at inducing cytogenetic damage and reduced clonogenic cell survival. For gamma rays, the cytogenetic damage and the reduction of clonogenic cell survival were greater when the dose was delivered acutely instead of chronically. Instead, for the alpha particles, at the same dose, we found equal cytogenetic damage and reduction of clonogenic cell survival for both chronic and acute exposure (except for the highest doses of 0.4 and 0.9 Gy, where cytogenetic damage is greater at a low dose rate).ConclusionThe results of this study may have an impact on space and terrestrial radioprotection of humans at low doses and low dose rates, on biodosimetry, and on the use of ionizing radiation in medicine. These results also provide insights into understanding damage induction and cell reaction mechanisms following chronic exposure (at dose rates as low as 18 and 5 mGy/h) to low- and high-LET radiation.

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). This contribution deals with the focusing and time–depth conversion of GPR data in a two-layer scenario. In a layered scenario, the different propagation velocities of the electromagnetic waves in different layers can induce distortion in the reconstruction. In particular, it is not possible, with common data processing, to achieve the focusing of both the targets embedded in the upper and deeper layers at the same time. We will present a strategy for mitigating this problem. The strength points of this strategy are its simplicity and the fact that it only requires a commercial code for the GPR data processing plus some steps easily implementable through a homemade code. This work extends a contribution of the same authors at the 20th International GPR conference held in Chanchung, China, in June 2024, and the conclusions are updated with three-dimensional numerical results, including depth slices determined directly in the spatial domain. Both numerical and experimental data will be shown.

Conservation genetic research is essential for the management and recovery of endangered taxa. However, the invasive collection of biological material for DNA analysis is controversial. From an ethical perspective, non-destructive sampling methods leave the aquatic specimen alive and less invasive procedures minimize stress on the animals. DNA can be obtained from fish using minimally invasive techniques such as buccal swabs. Here we evaluated the performance of buccal swabs for long-term storage of DNA obtained from brown trout (Salmo trutta). The buccal swabs were stored at room temperature and cut into pieces, one part of which was used for extraction of an aliquot and the others were stored as a “biobank” of biological material. The elapsed time from sampling to molecular analysis was one and half year. The amplification of three different DNA targets was tested to assess the effectiveness of the extraction: mitochondrial DNA (the D-LOOP region), nuclear DNA (the LDH gene) and microsatellite DNA at multiple loci. The results showed high quantification (mean value: 281.84±72.4 ng/µL), indicating that DNA could be effectively extracted from the buccal swabs. Our study results suggest that buccal swabs for long-term storage of DNA at room temperature are promising for use in field conservation studies.

Invasive species threaten native biodiversity, potentially leading to a decline in endemic aquatic species. Thus, understanding their physiological responses and evaluating ecosystem impacts is crucial. The study investigates adaptive responses to oxidative stress in the invasive Sinanodonta woodiana in Lake Candia (northwest Italy). This approach represents a novel perspective in environmental monitoring, utilizing invasive species to gain insights into ecosystem health and potential ecological threats. The investigation delved into oxidative stress biomarkers, including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, glyoxalase I, glyoxalase II, and lactate dehydrogenase, in mussel tissues (gills and digestive gland). Concurrently, environmental factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity were measured at four stations in Lake Candia during the summer. Environmental factors exhibited homogeneity across selected stations, with positive correlations observed only for temperature and conductivity with catalase and glyoxalase I. A distinct pattern of oxidative stress response was consistently observed in both mussel tissues throughout the sampling period across all monitoring stations, with more pronounced alterations observed in one specific station. This observation aligns with IBRv2 scores, indicating the station's highest impact. Gills exhibited a transient and severe oxidative stress response, while heightened antioxidant defenses in digestive glands suggested the adaptive ability of Chinese pond mussels to environmental disturbances. Proactive inclusion of invasive species in biomonitoring programs reduces reliance on native populations, enhancing strategies for controlling non-native mussels in protected areas like Lake Candia.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common and slow-progressing neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunctions. Over the last years, the microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis is emerging as a bacterial-neuro-immune ascending pathway that contributes to the progression of PD. Indeed, PD patients are characterized by changes in gut microbiota composition, alterations of intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB) and enteric neurogenic/inflammatory responses that, besides determining intestinal disturbances, contribute to brain pathology. In this context, despite the causal relationship between gut dysbiosis, impaired MGB axis and PD remains to be elucidated, emerging evidence shows that MGB axis modulation can represent a suitable therapeutical strategy for the treatment of PD. This review provides an overview of the available knowledge about the beneficial effects of gut-directed therapies, including dietary interventions, prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), in both PD patients and animal models. In this context, particular attention has been devoted to the mechanisms by which the modulation of MGB axis could halt or slow down PD pathology and, most importantly, how these approaches can be included in the clinical practice.

Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is one of the fast-growing species considered for sustainable aquaculture development along the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic coasts. The emergence of Systemic Granulomatosis (SG), a disease marked by multiple granulomas in various tissues, poses a significant challenge in meagre aquaculture. In the current study, we investigate the association of Mycobacterium spp. and SG in offshore aquaculture facilities in Sardinia, Italy. A total of 34 adult seemingly healthy meagre were arbitrarily collected and analyzed, combining histological, microbiological, molecular, metagenomics, and in situ techniques to investigate the presence of pathogens. Ziehl–Neelsen (ZN), periodic acid–schiff (PAS), and Giemsa stains were performed for the detection of acid-fast bacteria, common parasites, and fungi within granulomas, respectively. Granulomas were detected in 91% (31/34) of fish. The affected organs were kidney (88%), liver (47%), heart (41%), intestine (17.6%), and brain (5%). Acid-fast staining, along with Mycobacterium spp. specific quantitative PCR (qPCR), in situ hybridization (ISH) assay, and microbiological analyses showed negative results for the detection of Mycobacterium spp. and other bacteria implicated in granuloma formation. However, PCR amplification and sequencing of the 65-kDa heat shock protein gene revealed the presence of M. chelonae in 13% of both formalin-fixed and frozen liver tissues. Bacterial isolation failed to detect nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and other bacteria typically associated with granulomas. Consistently, the use of an M. chelonae-specific probe in ISH failed to identify this bacterial species in granulomas. Collectively, results do not support the role of M. chelonae in the development of granulomas and suggest rejecting the hypothesis of a potential link between NTM and SG.

Lactococcus garvieae has been considered for a long time the only causal agent of lactococcosis. In recent years, different papers reported the involvement of other two bacterial species: Lactococcus petauri and Lactococcus formosensis. A different host tropism has been described for these species where L. garvieae and L. petauri are predominant species in fish and humans’ infections, while L. formosensis in bovine. L. garvieae has been reported as rare infectious agent in dog. This paper represents the first isolation of L. petauri in two domesticated dog cases from urine and skin samples, respectively. The recovered L. petauri has been identified using PCR and sequencing based on Internal Transcribe Spacer (ITS) and phylogenetic analysis showed that it belongs to the L. petauri cluster with a 100% of identity with sequences previously reported from fish isolates while there were differences with L. petauri isolated from urinary tract infection from humans. L. petauri in human infection has been considered not necessarily deriving from the ingestion of contaminated food but rather as an opportunistic pathogen colonization intestinal tract. Differences among virulotypes have been reported for humans and dogs, and a comparison was also made between the virulotyping of L. petauri and L. garvieae in dogs. The antimicrobial pattern showed susceptibility for the election treatment molecules. These data contribute to our understanding of the host trophism of this species which was misclassified for long time and provide new data on its virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance.

Sediments of alpine lakes serve as crucial records that reveal the history of lacustrine basins, offering valuable insights into the effects of global changes. One significant effect is the variation in rainfall regimes, which can substantially influence nutrient loads and sedimentation rates in lacustrine ecosystems, thereby playing a pivotal role in shaping biotic communities. In this study, we analyze subfossil chironomid assemblages within a sediment core from an alpine lake (western Italian Alps) to investigate the effects of rainfall and flood regime variations over the past 1200 years. Sediment characterization results highlight changes in sediment textures and C/N ratio values, indicating phases of major material influx from the surrounding landscape into the lake basin. These influxes are likely associated with intense flooding events linked to heavy rainfall periods over time. Flooding events are reflected in changes in chironomid assemblages, which in our samples are primarily related to variations in sediment texture and nutrient loads from the surrounding landscape. Increased abundances of certain taxa (i.e., Brillia, Chaetocladius, Cricotopus, Psectrocladius, Cricotopus/Orthocladius Parorthocladius) may be linked to higher organic matter and vegetation inputs from the surrounding landscape. Biodiversity decreased during certain periods along the core profile due to intense flood regimes and extreme events. These results contribute to our understanding of alpine lake system dynamics, particularly those associated with intense flooding events, which are still understudied.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) consists of genes involved in immune response and molecular discrimination between self and non-self. MHC genes are the most polymorphic in vertebrates. The origin and maintenance of polymorphism in MHC genes in populations is still unresolved. Mechanisms such as sexual selection and heterozygote advantage have been suggested as explanations for this high variability. In this study, a farmed population of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) characterized by the presence of specific MHC class IIB gene haplotypes at a frequency higher (30%) than that expected from random matings was investigated. Therefore, it was hypothesized that disassortative matings occur with an adaptive advantage for females, resulting in improved reproductive performance when mated with individuals with similar MHC haplotypes. Genetic analyses of the breeders were performed to define the MHC haplotypes and to perform specific matings. The effect of mating was evaluated by analyzing the survival rate of the offspring at various stages of incubation until swim-up. The reproductive performance of the offspring derived from specimens with similar haplotypes showed a better survival trend during the first life stages and reduced malformations. The results obtained are in contrast with the heterozygous advantage theory, therefore it was hypothesized, as for other salmonid species, the presence of a positive selection towards locally adapted MHC genes that promotes reproduction between genetically similar individuals.

Trace element pollution in the Persian Gulf originates from industrial activities, urbanization, shipping, and oil extraction, leading to accumulation in sediments, water, and marine life such as jellyfish. This study investigated trace element bioaccumulation in two jellyfish species, Crambionella orsini and Cassiopea andromeda, across different locations. Jellyfish samples were collected from the Mahshahr and Dilam ports, and their trace element concentrations were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The study revealed no significant differences in trace element concentrations between C. orsini and C. andromeda. However, levels of copper, iron, manganese, and nickel were significantly higher in specimens from Mahshahr compared to those from Dilam. No significant differences were observed for cadmium, mercury, vanadium, tin, magnesium, and selenium across sites. Lower concentrations of lead, arsenic, zinc, and cobalt were found in C. orsini from Dilam compared to Mahshahr. Additionally, the study found no significant correlation between trace element concentrations in the water and their accumulation in jellyfish bodies. These findings offer valuable insights into the distribution and bioaccumulation of trace elements in jellyfish populations across different marine environments in the Persian Gulf.

Background: The literature lacks a combined analysis of neurosurgical microvascular anastomosis training models. We performed a systematic literature search to provide an overview of the existing models and proposed a classification system based on the level of simulation and reproducibility of the microvascular anastomosis. Methods: The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guidelines. We consulted MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, and EMBASE independently for papers about bypass training models. Every training model was analyzed according to six tasks supposed to esteem their fidelity to the real operative setting by using a scoring system from zero to two. Finally, authors classified the models into five classes, from A to E, by summing the individual scores. Results: This study included 109 papers for analysis. Training models were grouped into synthetic tubes, ex vivo models (animal vessels, fresh human cadavers, human placentas) and in vivo simulators (live animals—rats, rabbits, pigs). By applying the proposed classification system, live animals and placentas obtained the highest scores, falling into class A (excellent simulators). Human cadavers and animal vessels (ex vivo) were categorized in class B (good simulators), followed by synthetic tubes (class C, reasonable simulators). Conclusions: The proposed classification system helps the neurosurgeon to analyze the available training models for microvascular anastomosis critically, and to choose the most appropriate one according to the skills they need to improve

Oysters are sessile, filter-feeding bivalve molluscs widely distributed in estuarine and coastal habitats worldwide. They constitute a valuable resource for fisheries and extensive aquaculture and provide essential ecological services. Yet, their genetic diversity and distribution remain understudied. The variability in shell morphology complicates species classification, which is influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Although molecular phylogenetics research has refined oyster taxonomy and identified approximately 100 extant species, numerous taxonomic uncertainties persist. In the present study, we aimed to document the occurrence of small flat oysters of the genus Ostrea along the Mediterranean coastal areas of Liguria and Sardinia (Italy). Specifically, 16S rRNA sequence data were used to identify Ostrea species. Our findings offer novel insights into the O. stentina species complex and O. neostentina, a new species in the Mediterranean coastal areas of Italy. The study data further our understanding of Ostrea species diversity, distribution, and evolutionary patterns.

In the context of sea state monitoring, reconstructing the wave field and estimating the sea state parameters from radar data is a challenging problem. To reach this goal, this paper proposes a fully data-driven, deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network. The network takes as input the radar image spectrum and outputs the sea wave directional spectrum. After a 2D fast Fourier transform, the wave elevation field is reconstructed, and accordingly, the sea state parameters are estimated. The reconstruction strategy, herein presented, is tested using numerical data generated from a synthetic sea wave simulator, considering the spectral proprieties of the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project model. A performance analysis of the proposed deep-learning estimation strategy is carried out, along with a comparison to the classical modulation transfer function approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective in reconstructing the directional wave spectrum across different sea states.

We propose an artificial intelligence approach based on deep neural networks to tackle a canonical 2D scalar inverse source problem. The learned singular value decomposition (L-SVD) based on hybrid autoencoding is considered. We compare the reconstruction performance of L-SVD to the Truncated SVD (TSVD) regularized inversion, which is a canonical regularization scheme, to solve an ill-posed linear inverse problem. Numerical tests referring to far-field acquisitions show that L-SVD provides, with proper training on a well-organized dataset, superior performance in terms of reconstruction errors as compared to TSVD, allowing for the retrieval of faster spatial variations of the source. Indeed, L-SVD accommodates a priori information on the set of relevant unknown current distributions. Different from TSVD, which performs linear processing on a linear problem, L-SVD operates non-linearly on the data. A numerical analysis also underlines how the performance of the L-SVD degrades when the unknown source does not match the training dataset.

Revascularization surgery for the symptomatic hemisphere with hemodynamic impairment is effective for Moyamoya vasculopathy patients. However, careful patient selection is crucial and ideally supported by advanced quantitative hemodynamic imaging. Recently, blood oxygenation level-dependent cerebrovascular reactivity (BOLD-CVR) and quantitative magnetic resonance angiography with non-invasive optimal vessel analysis (qMRA-NOVA) have gained prominence in assessing these patients. This study aims to present the results of BOLD-CVR and qMRA-NOVA imaging along with the changes in cerebral hemodynamics and flow status following flow augmentation with superficial temporal artery–middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass in our Moyamoya vasculopathy patient cohort. Symptomatic patients with Moyamoya vasculopathy treated at the Clinical Neuroscience Center of the University Hospital Zurich who underwent hemodynamic and flow imaging (BOLD-CVR and qMRA-NOVA) before and after bypass were included in the analysis. Reduced hemispheric volume flow rates, as well as impaired BOLD-CVR, were measured in all 12 patients with Moyamoya vasculopathy before STA-MCA bypass surgery. Following the surgical procedure, post-operative BOLD-CVR demonstrated a non-significant increase in BOLD-CVR values within the revascularized, symptomatic middle cerebral artery territory and cerebral hemisphere. The results of the statistical tests should be viewed as indicative due to the small sample size. Additionally, post-operative qMRA-NOVA revealed a significant improvement in the hemispheric volume flow rate of the affected hemisphere due to the additional bypass flow rate. Our findings affirm the presence of hemodynamic and flow impairments in the symptomatic hemisphere of the Moyamoya vasculopathy patients. Bypass surgery proves effective in improving both BOLD-CVR impairment and the hemispheric volume flow rate in our patient cohort.

High-mountain lakes are freshwater ecosystems situated above the tree line which are known for their remote locations and limited accessibility. These ecosystems host simplified biotic communities primarily concentrated in the littoral zone and dominated by benthic macroinvertebrates that serve as bioindicators of environmental pressures. A two-year monitoring investigation was performed in July 2022 and July 2023 at Nero Lake (Cesana Torinese, Northwest Italy). Five sites along the lakeshore were selected for sampling physicochemical water parameters and macrobenthos. All collected data were analysed to compare trends across years and within specific sites. The results revealed that Nero Lake exhibited consistent macrobenthic communities across the two years studied, but significant differences were observed in its microhabitats. This suggests that substrate type and physicochemical water parameters strongly influence community composition. Chironomidae larvae and Mollusca were the dominant species, showing distinct associations with different substrates and environmental factors from one year to another. These findings contribute to our understanding of the intricate relationships between benthic macroinvertebrates and their environments, highlighting the necessity of detailed, small-scale assessments to comprehend ecosystem dynamics and develop effective conservation strategies.

Lactococcosis, mainly sustained by the warm-water bacterium Lactococcus garvieae, is a disease associated with evident mortalities and economic lossed. Main disease signs are commonly bilateral exophthalmia, hyperpigmentation in the body, haemorrhages around the eye area, opercula, and mouth region, swollen abdomen, and anal prolapse. An effective monitoring system of fish diseases relies on rapid techniques for the timely management of infection outbreaks. We evaluated the potential of the SCiO sensor, a portable near infrared spectroscope, to assess in field the health status of rainbow trout. The study sample was composed of 20 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic rainbow trout obtained from an aquaculture farm and submitted to molecular detection of L. garvieae and SCiO examination. In order to detect presence or absence of septicaemia condition, blood smears were prepared from peripheral blood. Part of the symptomatic individuals (9/20) showed septicaemia, whereas no bacteria were found in the asymptomatic individuals. PCR assay of bacterial DNA was positive in spleen and kidney of 19/20 symptomatic and in 1/20 asymptomatic individuals. Bacteriological analysis revealed L. garvieae in 18/20 symptomatic samples and in 2/20 asymptomatic samples. The SCiO sensor was found to be able to discriminate between healthy and sick fish [sensibility 0.95 (0.75–1.00 I.C. 95%), specificity 0.80 (0.56–0.94 I.C. 95%)]. By virtue of rapid acquisition, low cost and use on site, the SCiO was considered as a useful diagnostic tool for monitoring L. garvieae infection in rainbow trout.

Radiobiological studies conducted in Deep Underground Laboratories allow to improve the knowledge of the biological effects induced by ionizing radiation at low doses/dose rates. At the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics we can study the possible differences in behavior between parallel biological systems, one maintained in a Reference-Radiation Environment (RRE, external) and the other maintained in an extremely Low-Radiation Environment (LRE, underground), in the absence of pressure changes, the RRE and LRE laboratories being at the same altitude. For these investigations, it is mandatory to evaluate the dose rate values at RRE and LRE. The aim of our work is to provide a comprehensive dosimetric analysis for external and underground laboratories. Measurements of the different low Linear Energy Transfer (LET) components at RRE and LRE were performed using different detectors. Gamma dose rates were 31 nSv/h at RRE and 27 nSv/h at LRE respectively. The muon dose rate was 47 nSv/h at RRE and negligible at LRE (less than pGy/h). Dosimetric measurements were also carried out to characterize the devices used to modulate the gamma dose rate, namely, a gamma source irradiator (to increase the dose rate by about 90 nSv/h) and shields (of iron at LRE and lead at RRE). Using the iron shield at LRE a dose reduction factor of about 20, compared to the RRE, was obtained for the low LET components; inside the lead shield at RRE the gamma component was negligible compared to the muonic component. Radon activity concentrations were approximately of 20 Bq/m3 at both LRE and RRE. The intrinsic contribution of radioactivity in the experimental set up was of 0.25 nGy/h, as evaluated with a GEANT4-simulation, using as input the measured activity concentrations. GEANT4 simulations were also performed to calculate the neutron dose rate at RRE, yielding a value of 1.4 nGy/h, much larger than that at LRE (which is less than pGy/h). In conclusion, RRE and LRE are currently characterized and equipped to perform radiobiological studies aimed at understanding the involvement of the different low LET components in determining the response of biological systems.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate Vibrio parahaemolyticus occurrences in bivalve molluscs harvested from Sardinian coastal environments between 2013 and 2015. The prevalence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus isolates is based on the detection of the two major virulence genes thermostable direct hemolysin (tdh) and thermolabile hemolysin (trh) To assess changes between 2011 and 2018 in the prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in bivalve molluscs, we compared our results with those of previous investigations. The paper deals with a combined time–depth conversion strategy able to improve the reconstruction of voids embedded in an opaque medium, such as cavities, caves, empty hypogeal rooms, and similar targets. The combined time–depth conversion accounts for the propagation velocity of the electromagnetic waves both in free space and in the embedding medium, and it allows better imaging and interpretation of the underground scenario. To assess the strategy’s effectiveness, ground penetrating radar (GPR) data referred to as an experimental test in controlled conditions are accounted for and processed by two different approaches to achieve focused images of the scenario under test. The first approach is based on a classical migration algorithm, while the second one faces the imaging as a linear inverse scattering approach. The results corroborate that the combined time–depth conversion improves the imaging in both cases.

Microplastic pollution has become pervasive. Identifying a bioindicator species to track the occurrence and effects of microplastics (MPs) on ecosystems is crucial for determining their impact on the environment. The digestive tract of Procambarus clarkii was thought to be of interest for investigating MPs accumulation in freshwater organisms. Our hypothesis was that the same type of MPs found in abiotic compartments (water and sediment) could be found in P. clarkii, which would make it an ideal candidate for use as a bioindicator of MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems. Water, sediment, and P. clarkii specimens were collected from four sites in a lentic ecosystem (Lake Candia; northwestern Italy) for two consecutive years (2021–2022). The mean MPs abundance was 1.75 ± 0.95 items/m3 in 2021 and 2 ± 0.81 items/m3 in 2022 in the water samples and 6.75 ± 1.5 items/kg and 8 ± 0.81 items/kg in the sediment samples in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In 2021, the average was 0.06 ± 0.07 items/g in the males and 0.05 ± 0.05 items/g in the females; in 2022, the average was 0.04 ± 0.05 items/g and 0.05 ± 0.06 items/g in the males and the females, respectively. MP fibers and fragments (black, white, blue, light blue) of polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate were found in the biotic and the abiotic compartments. The generalized linear mixed model revealed that the number of items/g was predicted only by total weight: the lowest number of items/g was recorded for crayfish with the highest weight probably due to the feeding habits of P. clarkii. Our findings suggest that the invasive P. clarkii (smaller individuals, in particular) could be a good candidate bioindicator for MP pollution since the same type of MP items were recorded in the abiotic compartments. Further research is needed to better understand the feeding behavior of P. clarkii and the dynamics of MPs in aquatic ecosystems.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a major environmental concern for mountain ecosystem and for high-mountain lakes in particular, which are recognized indicators of global change. In this study, the presence of MPs was assessed in abiotic (water and sediment) and biotic (zooplankton, tadpoles, fish) compartments of two high-mountain lakes (Upper Lake Balma and Lower Lake Balma) in the Cottian Alps (northwest Italy). No MPs were found in water and zooplankton samples, whereas the mean MPs in sediment samples was 1.33 ± 0.67 items/m3 and 1.75 ± 0.62 items/m3 in Lower and Upper Lake Balma, respectively. The mean MPs in tadpoles of Rana temporaria was 0.33 ± 0.58 items/individual and 0.66 ± 0.58 items/individual in Lower and Upper Lake Balma, respectively. The mean number of MPs items found in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of fish (Salvelinus fontinalis) was considerably higher in specimens from the Lower (0.45 items/g GIT) than in those from the Upper Lake (0.20 items/g GIT). There was a negative relationship between fish size (weight and age) and MPs abundance in the GIT of fish, indicating that young fish accumulated more MP items probably due to the high prey ingestion rate compared to adults. The same MPs color (blue, white, black), shape (fibers and fragments), and chemical type (polypropylene and polyethylene) were found in the compartments of both lakes. Our findings suggest the use of S. fontinalis as an indicator of MP pollution in high-mountain lakes. Further studies are needed to better understand the sources and the effects of MPs in these remote ecosystems.

Abstract Aims Non‐invasive myocardial work (MW) is a validated index of left ventricular (LV) systolic performance, incorporating afterload and myocardial metabolism. The role of MW in predicting the first hospitalization for de novo heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is still unknown. We aim to investigate the diagnostic performance of MW to predict the first de novo HFpEF hospitalization in ambulatory individuals with preserved LV ejection fraction. Methods and results Twenty‐nine patients with transthoracic echocardiography performed at least 6 months before the first HFpEF hospitalization were compared with 29 matched controls. MW was derived as the area of pressure–strain loop using speckle‐tracking and brachial artery blood pressure. Global work index, global constructive work, global wasted work (GWW), and global work efficiency (GWE) were collected. First HFpEF hospitalization and its combination with cardiovascular death [major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE)] and all‐cause of death [major adverse events (MAE)] were assessed. At baseline, future HFpEF patients showed lower global work index, global constructive work, GWE, and higher GWW than controls (all P 170 mmHg% was associated with a 4‐fold increase of MACE (HR = 4.5, 95% CI 1.59–13.12, P = 0.005) and a 3‐fold higher risk of MAE (HR = 2.9, 95% CI 1.24–6.6, P = 0.014). Conclusions In ambulatory patients with preserved LV ejection fraction and risk factors, GWW showed high accuracy to predict the first HFpEF hospitalization and its combination with mortality. The GWW routine assessment may be clinically helpful in patients with dyspnoea.

Climate change has direct effects on aquatic systems where increased water temperature leads to range shifts and changes in the distribution of aquatic organisms. The effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems are expected in all biomes, and in Alpine environments in particular. Anthropogenic pressure (e.g., chemical pollution) besides climate change impact on the state and quality of aquatic systems in which climate change and environmental contaminants can interact. To better understand the effect of increases in temperature and environmental pollution on high-mountain lakes, we performed an ecotoxicological assay on Daphnia middendorffiana collected during summer 2021 in a high-mountain lake (Upper Balma Lake, Cottian Alps, 2212 m a.s.L.). Samples were exposed to two temperature values (15 °C and 20 °C), potassium chloride (KCl) as the reference toxicant, and D. magna as the model organism for comparison. Findings showed immobilization after exposure to KCl in both species, but exposure to non-optimal water temperature (20 °C and 15 °C for D. middendorffiana and D. magna, respectively) enhanced this effect. The mean half-maximal effective concentration (EC50; 24 h) for D. middendorffiana was significantly lower than that recorded for D. magna exposed to 20 °C (KCl) (46.9 mg/L vs 255 mg/L). A significantly higher EC50 (273.4 mg/L; 24 h) was recorded for D. middendorffiana exposed to 15 °C (KCl) compared to D. magna (EC50 50.6 mg/L; 24 h). Our findings suggest that the combined effects of temperature and chemical pollution may severely affect the occurrence of D. middendorffiana, which occupies a central position in the food webs of high-mountain lakes in the Alps.

Red mullet (Mullus barbatus) is a commercially relevant fish species, yet epidemiological data on anisakid nematode infestation in M. barbatus are scarce. To fill this gap, we report the occurrence of Anisakis larvae in red mullet in the Ligurian Sea (western Mediterranean). This survey was performed between 2018 and 2020 on fresh specimens of M. barbatus (n = 838) from two commercial fishing areas (Imperia, n = 190; Savona, n = 648) in the Ligurian Sea. Larvae morphologically identified as Anisakis spp. (n = 544) were characterized using PCR-RFLP as Anisakis pegreffii. The overall prevalence of A. pegreffii was 24.46%; the prevalence at each sampling site was 6.32% for Imperia and 29.78% for Savona. Furthermore, 3300 larvae of Hysterothylacium spp. were detected in the visceral organs of fish coinfected with A. pegreffii, showing that coinfection with two parasitic species is not rare. This study provides a timely update on the prevalence of ascaridoid nematodes in red mullet of the Ligurian Sea, an important commercial fishing area in the Mediterranean.

Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is associated with increased mortality. However, it is controversial whether AKI affects prognosis per se, being linked to baseline chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bleeding complications. The aim of this study was to disentangle, applying mediation analysis, the association between AKI and clinical outcome, considering CKD and bleedings. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing TAVR were prospectively enrolled at 5 high‐volume centers in Italy. AKI was defined according to Valve Academic Research Consortium‐3 consensus, whereas bleeding with Bleeding Academic Research Consortium. Primary outcome was all‐cause mortality after 1‐year follow‐up. Among 2621 patients undergoing TAVR, AKI occurrence was associated with 1‐year mortality.
