Plutonium radiochemical separation using TEVA resin and chemical recoveries determined by alpha spectrometry. Zero background measurement of 244Pu by AMS from environmental sediments from Bikini Atoll island and the Pacific Ocean.

The measurements of radiative capture reactions can be performed in inverse kinematic detecting directly the recoil produced in the nuclear reaction using a recoil mass separator (RMS). The development of RMS allows the possibility to overtake both the problems of gamma background signal and purity and production of target. The European Recoil Separator for Nuclear Astrophysics (ERNA) is a RMS designed with the main goal of determining the 12C(α, γ)16O, presently hosted at Center for Isotopics Research and Cultural hEritage laboratory of Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Caserta Italy (CIRCE-DMF). A general discussion on measurement techniques with recoil mass separator will be presented in this contribution with a focus on the ERNA one.

Data acquisition is a function that plays a fundamental role in the automatic supervision and system control, it combine the system (software and hardware) to the process to be controlled (real world). The field of application starts from research to automation, from industry to home automation, in practice everything that in some way must be performed without human supervision. Data acquisition systems are mainly used to measure physical phenomena such as: temperature, voltage, current, distance and pressure, shock and vibration, and displacement, RPM, angle and discrete events, weight. In order to measure it we need a DAQ , Data AcQuisition System, in this chapter we propose to use a cheap open source hardware: Arduino.

12C fusion reactions are among the most important in stellar evolution since they determine the destiny of massive stars. Over the past fifty years, massive efforts have been done to measure these reactions at low energies. However, existing data present several discrepancies between sets and large uncertainties specially at the lowest energies. Factors such as beam/environmental backgrounds, extremely low cross sections and insufficient knowledge of the reaction mechanism contribute to these problems. Recently, the ERNA collaboration measured the 12C+12C reactions at Ec.m. = 2.51 - 4.36 MeV with energy steps between 10 and 25 keV in the centre of mass. Representing the smallest energy steps to date. In these measurements, beam induced background was minimised and S-factors for the proton and alpha channels were calculated. Results indicate that a possible explanation for the discrepancies between data sets is the wrongly assumed constant branching ratios and isotropical angular distributions. Given the excellent performance of the detectors for low energy measurements, a collaboration with the LUNA group (LNGS) has started. Background measurements underground are being performed and results indicate it could be possible to measure the 12C+12C reactions directly into the Gamow Window.

Doppler-free saturated-absorption Lamb dips are observed for weak vibration-rotation transitions of C2H2 between 7167 and 7217 cm−1, using a frequency-comb assisted cavity ring-down spectrometer based on the use of a pair of phase-locked diode lasers. We measured the absolute center frequency of sixteen lines belonging to the 2 ν 3 + ν 5 1 band, targeting ortho and para states of the molecule. Line pairs of the P and Q branches were selected so as to form a ‘V’-scheme, sharing the lower energy level. Such a choice made it possible to determine the rotational energy separations of the excited vibrational state for J-values from 11 to 20. Line-center frequencies are determined with an overall uncertainty between 3 and 13 kHz. This is over three orders of magnitude more accurate than previous experimental studies in the spectral region around the wavelength of 1.4 μm. The retrieved energy separations provide a stringent test of the so-called MARVEL method recently applied to acetylene.

The cross section of 7Be(p,γ)8B represents one of the most important nuclear inputs for the prediction of the high energy component of solar neutrinos and it has also a direct impact on the 7Li abundance after the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. The importance of this reaction triggered an intense experimental work over the last decades, where discrepancies were observed between the results of different measurements. In addition, a question remains about possible common systematic effects, considering that all measurements share the same experimental approach, i.e. an intense proton beam impinging on a 7Be radioactive target. Inverse kinematics, i.e. a 7Be ion beam and a hydrogen target, with the direct measurement of the total reaction cross section by means of the detection of the 8B recoils, can shed light on such systematic effects. Efforts attempted so far were limited by the low 7Be beam intensity. We present here the results of a new measurement at Ecm = 376 to 819 keV using a high intensity 7Be beam in combination with a windowless gas target and the recoil mass separator ERNA (European Recoil mass separator for Nuclear Astrophysics) at CIRCE (Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage), Caserta, Italy. Our results, including the systematic error, are compatible with previous measurements that yields lower value of S17(0) and are compatible with the currently accepted value from [1] only at a 2-σ level.

12C+12C reactions are crucial in the evolution of massive stars and explosive scenarios. The measurement of these reactions at astrophysical energies is very challenging due to their extremely small cross sections, and the presence of beam induced background originated by the natural 1,2H contaminants in the C targets. In addition, the many discrepancies between different data sets and the complicated resonant structure of the cross sections make the extrapolation to low energies very uncertain. Recently, we performed a direct measurement of the 12C+12C reactions at the CIRCE Laboratory in Italy. Results from a study on target contamination were used, allowing us to measure cross sections at Ec.m. =2.51 − 4.36 MeV with 10-25 keV energy steps. Two stage ΔE-Erest detectors were used for unambiguous particle identification. Branching ratios of individual particle groups were found to vary significantly with energy and angular distributions were also found to be anisotropic, which could be a potential explanation for the discrepancies observed among different data sets.

This study describes the tests carried out to measure the isotopic composition of Boron (B) in water samples by use of the magnetic spectrometer and accelerator of the Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage (CIRCE) of Italy. B was extracted from water samples to obtain Boric acid (B(OH)3), which was then analyzed. We quantified the precision of our experimental system and the variability introduced by the chemical extraction measuring chemically untreated and treated pure B(OH)3samples. We found an instrumental precision around 10‰ (1σ), but, by increasing the number of replicates (>30), we obtained a standard deviation of the mean (σerr) around 3‰ or lower. We also tested whether the chemical extraction caused isotopic fractionation and found a small fractionation (ε = 5 ± 4‰) of treated samples normalized against untreated ones, compatible with zero at 2σ. In order to avoid δ11B biases, we decided to normalize unknown treated samples with treated standards. Finally, we measured δ11B of seawater and groundwater samples to test the analytical method, and obtained values of 30 ± 6‰ and −4 ± 4‰ respectively. We conclude that our experimental system is only suitable when remarkable (>10‰) δ11B differences exist among water samples, but cannot be used to measure natural differences (

Companies from different industrial sectors regularly use biological aerated filters to reduce pollutants resulting from industrial productions. These filters use a bed of inert material for the growth of a microbial colony which has the key role to break down pollutants. The inert bed is usually formed by organic or inorganic material and always more often from natural products such as the commercial Biodagene which is the product of fired shales from France. This research aims to use clayey Italian rock formations for the production of lightweight expanded aggregates and to test physical -mechanical features of fired products, to verify the possibility of manufacturing a viable alternative media to inert products currently traded.
