1. Synchronisability in Mailbox Communication

Abstract

We revisit the problem of synchronisability for communicating automata, i.e., whether the language of send messages for an asynchronous system is the same as the language of send messages with a synchronous communication. The un/decidability of the problem depends on the specific asynchronous semantics considered as well as the topology (the communication flow) of the system. Synchronisability is known to be undecidable under the peer-to-peer semantics, while it is still an open problem for mailbox communication. The problem was shown to be decidable for ring topologies. In this paper, we show that when generalising to automata with accepting states, synchronisability is undecidable under the mailbox semantics, this result is obtained by resorting to the Post Correspondence problem. In an attempt to solve the specific problem where all states are accepting, we also show that synchronisability is decidable for tree topologies (where, as well as for rings, peer-to-peer coincides with mailbox semantics). Abstract

In a world burdened by air pollution, the integration of state-of-the-art sensor calibration techniques utilizing Quantum Computing (QC) and Machine Learning (ML) holds promise for enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of air quality monitoring systems in smart cities. This article investigates the process of calibrating inexpensive optical fine-dust sensors through advanced methodologies such as Deep Learning (DL) and Quantum Machine Learning (QML). The objective of the project is to compare four sophisticated algorithms from both the classical and quantum realms to discern their disparities and explore possible alternative approaches to improve the precision and dependability of particulate matter measurements in urban air quality surveillance. Classical Feed-Forward Neural Networks (FFNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models are evaluated against their quantum counterparts: Variational Quantum Regressors (VQR) and Quantum LSTM (QLSTM) circuits. Through meticulous testing, including hyperparameter optimization and cross-validation, the study assesses the potential of quantum models to refine calibration performance. Our analysis shows that: the FFNN model achieved superior calibration accuracy on the test set compared to the VQR model in terms of lower L1 loss function (2.92 vs 4.81); the QLSTM slightly outperformed the LSTM model (loss on the test set: 2.70 vs 2.77), despite using fewer trainable weights (66 vs 482)., Comment: Accepted at QCE24

4. Holographic correlators with BPS bound states in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM

Abstract

We compute 4-point correlators in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ Super-Yang-Mills with both single and double-particle $1/2$-BPS operators in the regime of large 't Hooft coupling and large $N$. In particular we give explicit expressions up to $\mathcal{O}(1/N^4)$ for the lightest correlator with two double-particle and two single-particle operators built out of the stress-tensor multiplet. Our derivation makes use of the general holographic prescription applied to an asymptotically AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ geometry that describes a coherent superposition of multi-graviton operators. The final result can be written in terms of a natural generalisation of the standard D-functions and takes a compact form in Mellin space. The correlator we compute here is the simplest of a more general class of correlators where two inserted operators are multi-particles. 5. Denoising of photogrammetric dummy head ear point clouds for individual Head-Related Transfer Functions computation

Abstract

Individual Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs), crucial for realistic virtual audio rendering, can be efficiently numerically computed from precise three-dimensional head and ear scans. While photogrammetry scanning is promising, it generally lacks accuracy, leading to HRTFs showing significant perceptual deviation from reference data, mainly due to scanning errors affecting the most occluded pinna structures. This paper examines the application of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for denoising photogrammetric ear scans. Several DNNs, fine-tuned on pinna samples corrupted with synthetic error modelled to mimic that observed in photogrammetric dummy head scans, are tested and benchmarked against a classical denoising method. One DNN is further modified and retrained to enhance its denoising performance. The comparison of HRTFs derived from original and denoised scans against reference data shows that the best-performing DNN marginally reduces the deviation of photogrammetric dummy head HRTFs to levels closer to accurately measured ones. Additionally, correlation analysis between geometric and HRTF metrics, computed on the scanned point clouds and their corresponding HRTFs, is used to identify key measures for evaluating the deviation between target and reference scans. These findings are expected to guide the selection of relevant loss functions and foster improvements in this and similar DNN models.

Abstract

Quantum Computing (QC) offers the potential to enhance traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads by leveraging the unique properties of quantum computers, leading to the emergence of a new paradigm: HPC-QC. While this integration presents new opportunities, it also brings novel challenges, particularly in ensuring the dependability of such hybrid systems. This paper aims to identify integration challenges, anticipate failures, and foster a diverse co-design for HPC-QC systems by bringing together QC, cloud computing, HPC, and network security. The focus of this emerging inter-disciplinary effort is to develop engineering principles that ensure the dependability of hybrid systems, aiming for a more prescriptive co-design cycle. Our framework will help to prevent design pitfalls and accelerate the maturation of the QC technology ecosystem. Key aspects include building resilient HPC-QC systems, analyzing the applicability of conventional techniques to the quantum domain, and exploring the complexity of scaling in such hybrid systems. This underscores the need for performance-reliability metrics specific to this new computational paradigm.

10. The geometry of large charge multi-traces in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Abstract

We construct a one-parameter family of half-BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity using a consistent truncation to gauged five-dimensional supergravity. For small values of the parameter, the solution reduces to the linear perturbation of AdS$_5\times S^5$ dual to the chiral primary operator in the stress-tensor multiplet, and we give evidence that the geometry is regular and asymptotes AdS in a normalisable way for arbitrarily large values of the parameter. We conjecture that the solution is the gravity dual of a ``heavy" multi-trace operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ Super Yang-Mills made by $p$ copies of the stress-tensor chiral primary operator, with $p$ of order $N^2$ in the large $N$ limit. Abstract

BackgroundAn umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is the preferred route of epinephrine administration during neonatal resuscitation but requires specialized equipment, expertise, and time.HypothesisDirect injection of epinephrine into the umbilical vein (UV) followed by milking a ~20 cm segment of cut umbilical cord to flush the epinephrine (DUV + UCM) will lead to a quicker administration and earlier return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) compared with epinephrine given through a UVC.DesignEighteen near-term asphyxiated lambs were randomized to receive a low-UVC or DUV + UCM of epinephrine at 0.02 or 0.03 mg/kg doses.Outcome measuresA total of 16/18 lambs achieved ROSC with a similar mean (±SEM) time to ROSC [DUV + UCM vs. low-UVC (4.67 ± 0.67 vs. 3.99 ± 0.58 min); p = 0.46]. Two out of ten lambs in the DUV + UCM group required UVC placement for additional epinephrine. The administration of the first dose of epinephrine was similar (DUV + UCM-2.97 ± 0.48 vs. UVC-4.23 ± 0.58 min; p = 0.12). Both methods yielded similar epinephrine concentrations (peak concentrations of 253 ± 63 and 328 ± 80 ng/mL for DUV + UCM and UVC EPI, respectively).ConclusionsDUV + UCM resulted in a ROSC success of 78% following the first epinephrine dose and showed similar epinephrine concentrations to UVC. Clinical studies evaluating DUV + UCM as an alternate route for epinephrine while intravenous access is being established are warranted.

Abstract

A multispecialty trauma team must provide care for pelvic gunshot wounds (PGW) due to the high risk of associated morbidity and mortality, the high density of organs that might be wounded within the pelvis, and the potential consequences of these complicated injuries. We present a case of a 59-year-old woman hemodynamically stable with firearm injury to the left buttock. CT examination showed free air in the peritoneal cavity and in the retroperitoneum and a focal contrast extravasation within the uterine fundus. The patient underwent urgent laparotomy that revealed triple bowel perforation (sigmoid colon, medium rectum, ileum) and a laceration of the posterior and anterior uterine wall at level of the cervix with no signs of active bleeding. The bullet was lodged above the peritoneal reflection, in the right pelvis, and it was removed, and handed over to the judicial authority. The perforated bowel segments were resected with Hartmann's procedure and ileal anastomosis. The uterine laceration was repaired. Although all the viscera and the structures along the trajectory can be harmed, pelvic gunshot wounds have the potential to inflict serious injury. Nongravid uterine traumas are a unique occurrence, and proper care requires an understanding of lesion grading. Finding the gynecological lesion in female patients is essential to receiving the best care and protecting the reproductive system.

Abstract We construct a one-parameter family of half-BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity using a consistent truncation to gauged five-dimensional supergravity. For small values of the parameter, the solution reduces to the linear perturbation of AdS5 × S 5 dual to the chiral primary operator in the stress-tensor multiplet, and we give evidence that the geometry is regular and asymptotes AdS in a normalisable way for arbitrarily large values of the parameter. We conjecture that the solution is the gravity dual of a “heavy” multi-trace operator in N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) Super Yang-Mills made by p copies of the stress-tensor chiral primary operator, with p of order N 2 in the large N limit. We perform some holographic checks supporting this duality map.

Abstract

Abstract P21 activated kinase 6 (PAK6) is a serine-threonine kinase with physiological expression enriched in the brain and overexpressed in a number of human tumors. While the role of PAK6 in cancer cells has been extensively investigated, the physiological function of the kinase in the context of brain cells is poorly understood. Our previous work uncovered a link between PAK6 and the Parkinson’s disease (PD)-associated kinase LRRK2, with PAK6 controlling LRRK2 activity and subcellular localization via phosphorylation of 14–3–3 proteins. Here, to gain more insights into PAK6 physiological function, we performed protein-protein interaction arrays and identified a subgroup of PAK6 binders related to ciliogenesis. We confirmed that endogenous PAK6 localizes at both the centrosome and the cilium, and positively regulates ciliogenesis not only in tumor cells but also in neurons and astrocytes. Notably, PAK6 rescues ciliogenesis and centrosomal cohesion defects associated with the G2019S but not the R1441C LRRK2 PD mutation. Since PAK6 binds LRRK2 via its GTPase/Roc-COR domain and the R1441C mutation is located in the Roc domain, we used microscale thermophoresis and AlphaFold2-based computational analysis to demonstrate that PD mutations in LRRK2 affecting the Roc-COR structure substantially decrease PAK6 affinity, providing a rationale for the differential protective effect of PAK6 toward the distinct forms of mutant LRRK2. Altogether, our study discloses a novel role of PAK6 in ciliogenesis and points to PAK6 as the first LRRK2 modifier with PD mutation-specificity.

Abstract

Communicating finite-state machines (CFMs) are a Turing powerful model of asynchronous message-passing distributed systems. In weakly synchronous systems, processes communicate through phases in which messages are first sent and then received, for each process. Such systems enjoy a limited form of synchronization, and for some communication models, this restriction is enough to make the reachability problem decidable. In particular, we explore the intriguing case of p2p (FIFO) communication, for which the reachability problem is known to be undecidable for four processes, but decidable for two. We show that the configuration reachability problem for weakly synchronous systems of three processes is undecidable. This result is heavily inspired by our study on the treewidth of the Message Sequence Charts (MSCs) that might be generated by such systems. In this sense, the main contribution of this work is a weakly synchronous system with three processes that generates MSCs of arbitrarily large treewidth.

This volume contains the proceedings of ICE'23, the 16th Interaction and Concurrency Experience, which was held at the NOVA University in Lisbon, Portugal, as a satellite event of DisCoTec'22. The ICE workshop series features a distinguishing review and selection procedure: PC members are encouraged to interact, anonymously, with authors. The 2023 edition of ICE included double blind reviewing of original research papers, in order to increase fairness and avoid bias in reviewing. Each paper was reviewed by three PC members, and altogether 5 papers were accepted for publication plus 4 oral presentations which are not part of this volume. We were proud to host 2 invited talks, by Carla Ferreira and Adrian Francalanza. The abstracts of these talks are included in this volume, together with the final versions of the research papers, which take into account the discussion at the workshop and during the review process.

Abstract

Quantum Kernel Estimation (QKE) is a technique based on leveraging a quantum computer to estimate a kernel function that is classically difficult to calculate, which is then used by a classical computer for training a Support Vector Machine (SVM). Given the high number of 2-local operators necessary for realizing a feature mapping hard to simulate classically, a high qubit connectivity is needed, which is not currently possible on superconducting devices. For this reason, neutral atom quantum computers can be used, since they allow to arrange the atoms with more freedom. Examples of neutral-atom-based QKE can be found in the literature, but they are focused on graph learning and use the analogue approach. In this paper, a general method based on the gate model is presented. After deriving 1-qubit and 2-qubit gates starting from laser pulses, a parameterized sequence for feature mapping on 3 qubits is realized. This sequence is then used to empirically compute the kernel matrix starting from a dataset, which is finally used to train the SVM. It is also shown that this process can be generalized up to N qubits taking advantage of the more flexible arrangement of atoms that this technology allows. The accuracy is shown to be high despite the small dataset and the low separation. Abstract

Microstrata are the non-extremal analogues of superstrata: they are smooth, non-extremal (non-BPS) solitonic solutions to IIB supergravity whose deep-throat limits approximate black holes. Using perturbation theory and numerical methods, we construct families of solutions using a consistent truncation to three-dimensional supergravity. The most general families presented here involve two continuous parameters, or amplitudes, and four quantized parameters that set the angular momenta and energy levels. Our solutions are asymptotic to the vacuum of the D1-D5 system: AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$. Using holography, we show that the they are dual to multi-particle states in the D1-D5 CFT involving a large number of mutually non-BPS supergravitons and we determine the anomalous dimensions of these states from the binding energies in supergravity. These binding energies are uniformly negative and depend non-linearly on the amplitudes of the states. In one family of solutions, smoothness restricts some of the fields to lie on a special locus of the parameter space. Using precision holography we show that this special locus can be identified with the multi-particle states constructed via the standard OPE of the single-particle constituents. Abstract

We study the complexity relationship between three models of unbounded memory automata: nu-automata ($\nu$-A), Layered Memory Automata (LaMA)and History-Register Automata (HRA). These are all extensions of finite state automata with unbounded memory over infinite alphabets. We prove that the membership problem is NP-complete for all of them, while they fall into different classes for what concerns non-emptiness. The problem of non-emptiness is known to be Ackermann-complete for HRA, we prove that it is PSPACE-complete for $\nu$-A.

Abstract

We study the analytic structure of the heavy-heavy-light-light holographic correlators in the supergravity approximation of the AdS$_3 \times S^3$/CFT$_2$ duality. As an explicit example, we derive the correlator where the heavy operator is a classical microstate of the 5D supersymmetric black hole and its dual geometry interpolates as a function of a continuous parameter between global AdS$_3$ and the extremal BTZ black hole. The simplest perturbation of this interpolating geometry by a light field is described by the Heun equation and we exploit the relation of its connection coefficients to the Liouville CFT to analytically compute the correlator in the two limits, focusing in particular on the black hole regime. In this limit we find that the real poles of the correlator become dense and can be approximated by a cut. We show that, when the charges of the heavy state are in the black hole regime, the discontinuity across the cut has complex poles corresponding to the quasi-normal modes of BTZ. This behaviour is qualitatively similar to what is expected for the large central charge limit of a typical black hole microstate, Comment: 59 pages, 1 figure; v2: 60 pages, minor improvements

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital pulmonary anomaly where a portion of the lung parenchyma is supplied by an anomalous systemic artery, usually originating from the thoracic or abdominal aorta. Traditionally surgical resection and ligation of the aberrant feeding vessel are the gold standard treatments of this disease. Hybrid operations consisting in endovascular arterial embolization and surgical resection is a promising treatment option. We report a case of a 69-years-old man with symptomatic intralobular sequestration successfully treated by hybrid approach.

Abstract

Abstract The paper-and-pencil Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) copy task has been extensively used to assess visuo-constructional skills in children and adults. The scoring systems utilized in clinical practice provide an integrated evaluation of the drawing process, without differentiating between its visuo-constructional, organizational, and motor components. Here, a tablet-based ROCF copy task capable of providing a quantitative assessment of the drawing process, differentiating between visuo-constructional, organizational, and motor skills, is trialed in 94 healthy children, between 7 and 11 years of age. Through previously validated algorithms, 12 indices of performance in the ROCF copy task were obtained for each child. Principal component analysis of the 12 indices identified spatial, procedural, and kinematic components as distinct dimensions of the drawing process. A composite score for each dimension was determined, and correlation analysis between composite scores and conventional paper-and-pencil measures of visuo-constructional, procedural, and motor skills performed. The results obtained confirmed that the constructional, organizational, and motor dimensions underlie complex figure drawing in children; and that each dimension can be measured by a unique composite score. In addition, the composite scores here obtained from children were compared with previsions results from adults, offering a novel insight into how the interplay between the three dimensions of drawing evolves with age.

Abstract Global health reciprocal innovation emphasizes the movement of technologies or interventions between high- and low-income countries to address a shared public health problem, in contrast to unidirectional models of “development aid” or “reverse innovation”. Evidence-based interventions are frequently adapted from the setting in which they were developed and applied in a new setting, presenting an opportunity for learning and partnership across high- and low-income contexts. However, few clear procedures exist to guide researchers and implementers on how to incorporate equitable and learning-oriented approaches into intervention adaptation across settings. We integrated theories from pedagogy, implementation science, and public health with examples from experience adapting behavioral health interventions across diverse settings to develop a procedure for a bidirectional, equitable process of intervention adaptation across high- and low-income contexts. The Mutual capacity building model for adaptation (MCB-MA) is made up of seven steps: 1) Exploring: A dialogue about the scope of the proposed adaptation and situational appraisal in the new setting; 2) Developing a shared vision: Agreeing on common goals for the adaptation; 3) Formalizing: Developing agreements around resource and data sharing; 4) Sharing complementary expertise: Group originating the intervention supporting the adapting group to learn about the intervention and develop adaptations, while gleaning new strategies for intervention implementation from the adapting group; 5) Reciprocal training: Originating and adapting groups collaborate to train the individuals who will be implementing the adapted intervention; 6) Mutual feedback: Originating and adapting groups share data and feedback on the outcomes of the adapted intervention and lessons learned; and 7) Consideration of next steps: Discuss future collaborations. This evidence-informed procedure may provide researchers with specific actions to approach the often ambiguous and challenging task of equitable partnership building. These steps can be used alongside existing intervention adaptation models, which guide the adaptation of the intervention itself.

Abstract

BackgroundCerebral oxygen delivery (cDO2) is low during chest compressions (CC). We hypothesized that gas exchange and cDO2 are better with continuous CC with high frequency percussive ventilation (CCC + HFPV) compared to conventional 3:1 compressions-to-ventilation (C:V) resuscitation during neonatal resuscitation in preterm lambs with cardiac arrest induced by umbilical cord compression.MethodsFourteen lambs in cardiac arrest were randomized to 3:1 C:V resuscitation (90CC + 30 breaths/min) per the Neonatal Resuscitation Program guidelines or CCC + HFPV (120CC + HFPV continuously). Intravenous epinephrine was given every 3 min until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).ResultsThere was no difference in the incidence and time to ROSC between both groups. Median (IQR) PaCO2 was significantly lower with CCC + HFPV during CC, at ROSC and 15 min post-ROSC-[104 (99-112), 83 (77-99), and 43 (40-64)], respectively compared to 3:1 C:V-[149 (139-167), 153 (143-168), and 153 (138-178) mmHg. PaO2 and cDO2 were higher with CCC + HFPV during CC and at ROSC. PaO2 was similar 15 min post-ROSC with a lower FiO2 in the CCC + HFPV group 0.4 (0.4-0.5) vs. 1 (0.6-1).ConclusionIn preterm lambs with perinatal cardiac-arrest, continuous chest compressions with HFPV does not improve ROSC but enhances gas exchange and increases cerebral oxygen delivery compared to 3:1 C:V during neonatal resuscitation.Impact statementVentilation is the most important intervention in newborn resuscitation. Currently recommended 3:1 compression-to-ventilation ratio is associated with hypercarbia and poor oxygen delivery to the brain. Providing uninterrupted continuous chest compressions during high frequency percussive ventilation is feasible in a lamb model of perinatal cardiac arrest, and demonstrates improved gas exchange and oxygen delivery to the brain. This is the first study in premature lambs evaluating high frequency percussive ventilation with asynchronous chest compressions and lays the groundwork for future clinical studies to optimize gas exchange and hemodynamics during chest compressions in newborns.

In recent years, a CRA (Credit Risk Analysis) quantum algorithm with a quadratic speedup over classical analogous methods has been introduced. We propose a new variant of this quantum algorithm with the intent of overcoming some of the most significant limitations (according to business domain experts) of this approach. In particular, we describe a method to implement a more realistic and complex risk model for the default probability of each portfolio's asset, capable of taking into account multiple systemic risk factors. In addition, we present a solution to increase the flexibility of one of the model's inputs, the Loss Given Default, removing the constraint to use integer values. This specific improvement addresses the need to use real data coming from the financial sector in order to establish fair benchmarking protocols. Although these enhancements come at a cost in terms of circuit depth and width, they nevertheless show a path towards a more realistic software solution. Recent progress in quantum technology shows that eventually, the increase in the number and reliability of qubits will allow for useful results and meaningful scales for the financial sector, also on real quantum hardware, paving the way for a concrete quantum advantage in the field. The paper also describes experiments conducted on simulators to test the circuit proposed and contains an assessment of the scalability of the approach presented.

Abstract

There is a wide variety of message-passing communication models, ranging from synchronous ''rendez-vous'' communications to fully asynchronous/out-of-order communications. For large-scale distributed systems, the communication model is determined by the transport layer of the network, and a few classes of orders of message delivery (FIFO, causally ordered) have been identified in the early days of distributed computing. For local-scale message-passing applications, e.g., running on a single machine, the communication model may be determined by the actual implementation of message buffers and by how FIFO queues are used. While large-scale communication models, such as causal ordering, are defined by logical axioms, local-scale models are often defined by an operational semantics. In this work, we connect these two approaches, and we present a unified hierarchy of communication models encompassing both large-scale and local-scale models, based on their concurrent behaviors. We also show that all the communication models we consider can be axiomatized in the monadic second order logic, and may therefore benefit from several bounded verification techniques based on bounded special treewidth.

Abstract

The differential diagnosis between renal arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and cancer may be a challenge, due to the similar clinical and imaging findings. Herein, we report the case of an 80-year-old male patient presenting gross hematuria, initially diagnosed and treated with embolization for a renal AVM. Due to the recurrence of hematuria and rapid progression and changes of the vascular lesion with detection also of an intralesional solid nodule, a radical nephrectomy was performed revealing the presence of a renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Renal cell carcinoma and renal AVM can be difficult to differentiate from one another, for this reason a short-term follow-up should be carried out in patients diagnosed and treated for renal AVM to confirm the resolution of AVM or to assess any changes, such as atypical neovascularization or intralesional renal masses, which may increase the suspect of a hidden renal tumor.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

Abstract The cultural heritage sector includes a significant variety and complexity of data and information. Making this accessible today represents one of the main aims of cultural institutes. The connections between digital archives and knowledge enable the extension of this wealth of information beyond the physical existence of cultural assets by fostering the creation of digital libraries based on the comparison and interaction of data and on sharing the most up-to-date scientific literature. To this purpose, the results of the analysis on the Italian system of cataloguing and dissemination of knowledge related to cultural heritage are first illustrated. These are indispensable for enhancing the experience of cultural heritage, starting from guidebooks and travel literature, which represent the first codified forms of description of cultural heritage addressed to an audience of visitors/users, and ending with the most recent ways of sharing knowledge related to cultural heritage. Among these, digital platforms for participatory storytelling and the drafting of innovative texts and narratives stand out. Particular attention is paid to the innovative models for the use and enjoyment of cultural heritage employed in some of the main institutes and museums, where examples are analysed to effectively illustrate the emergence of new forms and modes of knowledge and narrative of cultural heritage, between big data and digital devices. Through these analyses, this article provides an overall picture of the current models and methods for the digital organisation of cultural heritage knowledge in order to raise awareness of the main critical issues encountered and to activate targeted planning and design processes capable of responding adequately to the needs of an increasingly active and participative user base in the processes of learning and enjoyment of cultural heritage. The interactions between scientific and technological research characterise the field of cultural heritage knowledge and are both instrumental in facilitating established approaches and contribute to changing the very parameters of research by posing new epistemological questions.

Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of ICE'22, the 15th Interaction and Concurrency Experience, which was held as an hybrid event in Lucca, Italy, and as a satellite event of DisCoTec'22. The ICE workshop series features a distinguishing review and selection procedure: PC members are encouraged to interact, anonymously, with authors. The 2022 edition of ICE included double blind reviewing of original research papers, in order to increase fairness and avoid bias in reviewing. Each paper was reviewed by between two and four PC members (with an average of 3.33333333333), and altogether 5 papers were accepted for publication -- plus 3 oral presentations which are not part of this volume. We were proud to host 2 invited talks, by Ilaria Castellani and Matthew Parkinson. The abstracts of these talks are included in this volume, together with the final versions of the research papers, which take into account the discussion at the workshop.

Abstract

The dramatic growth in cellular traffic volume requires cellular network operators to develop strategies to carefully dimension and manage the available network resources. Forecasting traffic volumes is a fundamental building block for any proactive management strategy and is therefore of great interest in such a context. Differently from what found in the literature, where network traffic is generally predicted in the short-term, in this work we tackle the problem of forecasting busy hour traffic, i.e., the time series of observed daily maxima traffic volumes. We tackle specifically forecasting in the long term (one, two months ahead) and we compare different approaches for the task at hand, considering different forecasting algorithms as well as relying or not on a cluster-based approach which first groups network cells with similar busy hour traffic profiles and then fits per-cluster forecasting models to predict the traffic loads. Results on a real cellular network dataset show that busy hour traffic can be forecasted with errors below 10% for look-ahead periods up to 2 months in the future. Moreover, when clusters are available, we improve forecasting accuracy up to 8% and 5% for look-ahead of 1 and 2 months, respectively.

In neonatal cardiac arrest, current International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) guidelines recommend increasing inspired O2 to 100% during chest compressions (CC). Following the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), gradual weaning from 100% O2 based on pulse oximetry (SpO2) can be associated with hyperoxia and risk for cerebral tissue injury owing to oxidative stress. We hypothesize that compared to gradual weaning from 100% O2 with titration based on preductal SpO2, abrupt or rapid weaning of inspired O2 to 21% after ROSC or use of 21% O2 during CC followed by upward titration of inspired O2 to achieve target SpO2 after ROSC will limit hyperoxia after ROSC. Nineteen lambs were randomized before delivery and asphyxial arrest was induced by umbilical cord occlusion. There was no difference in oxygenation during chest compressions between the three groups. Gradual weaning of inspired O2 from 100% O2 after ROSC resulted in supraphysiological PaO2 and higher cerebral oxygen delivery compared to 21% O2 during CC or 100% O2 during CC followed by abrupt weaning to 21% O2 after ROSC. The use of 21% O2 during CC was associated with very low PaO2 after ROSC and higher brain tissue lactic acid compared to other groups. Our findings support the current recommendations to use 100% O2 during CC and additionally suggest the benefit of abrupt decrease in inspired oxygen to 21% O2 after ROSC. Clinical studies are warranted to investigate optimal oxygen titration after chest compressions and ROSC during neonatal resuscitation.

Abstract

Background: Hemodynamic impact of residual mitral regurgitation (MR) after transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is not always univocally measured by transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) assessment alone. When analyzing TEER procedure result, operators often encounter discrepancy between TEE guidance and invasive hemodynamic monitoring. Objectives: This study sought to investigate the role of invasive hemodynamic monitoring during mitral valve TEER procedure on top of TEE guidance. Methods: We analyzed 78 patients with moderate-to-severe or severe MR who underwent TEER. Mitral pulse pressure fraction (MPF) was extracted from intraprocedural continuous left atrial pressure monitoring. Twenty-three patients with the same grade of MR not undergoing TEER were included as a control group. At follow-up, clinical and functional status in the majority of patients undergoing TEER were reassessed by NYHA classification and the 12-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ). Abstract

To increase cultural relevance and maximize access for historically underserved populations, there is a need to explore mechanisms underlying treatment outcomes during piloting. We developed a mixed-method approach, Integrated Clinical and Implementation Mapping (ICIM), to explore clinical and implementation mechanisms to inform improvements in content and delivery. We applied ICIM in a pilot of Tuko Pamoja, a lay counselor-delivered family intervention in Kenya (10 families with adolescents ages 12-17). ICIM is a 3-phase process to triangulate data sources to analyze how and why change occurs within individual cases and across cases. We synthesized data from session and supervision transcripts, fidelity and clinical skills ratings, surveys, and interviews. Outputs included a comprehensive narrative and visual map depicting how content and implementation factors influenced change. For Tuko Pamoja, ICIM results showed common presenting problems, including financial strain and caregivers distress, triggering negative interactions and adolescent distress. ICIM demonstrated that active treatment ingredients included communication skills and facilitated, prescribed time together. Families improved communication, empathy, and hope, facilitated improved family functioning and mental health. Key implementation mechanisms included provider clinical competencies, alliance-building, treatment-aligned adaptations, and consistent attendance. Results guided manual and training refinements and generated hypotheses about mechanisms to test in larger trials.

The exploration of underlying biological risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury has generated a substantial body of literature describing the role of bony morphology of the knee. Morphological risk factors, such as poor tibiofemoral joint congruity, a narrow femoral intercondylar notch, and an increased posterior tibial slope (PTS), have been implicated in contributing to knee instability and biomechanical abnormalities. Additionally, investigations into sex-specific differences in bony morphology have unveiled distinct risk profiles for males and females. In light of these findings, surgical considerations for individuals with high-risk bony morphology have been developed. Procedures like anterior closing wedge high tibial osteotomy, aiming to address increased PTS, and lateral extra-articular tenodesis for patients with specific risk factors, have been established. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current evidence describing the relationship between bony morphology and ACL injury. Abstract

Abstract Background Neuroblastoma (NB) represents the most frequent and aggressive form of extracranial solid tumor of infants. Although the overall survival of patients with NB has improved in the last years, more than 50% of high-risk patients still undergo a relapse. Thus, in the era of precision/personalized medicine, the need for high-risk NB patient-specific therapies is urgent. Methods Within the PeRsonalizEd Medicine (PREME) program, patient-derived NB tumors and bone marrow (BM)-infiltrating NB cells, derived from either iliac crests or tumor bone lesions, underwent to histological and to flow cytometry immunophenotyping, respectively. BM samples containing a NB cells infiltration from 1 to 50 percent, underwent to a subsequent NB cells enrichment using immune-magnetic manipulation. Then, NB samples were used for the identification of actionable targets and for the generation of 3D/tumor-spheres and Patient-Derived Xenografts (PDX) and Cell PDX (CPDX) preclinical models. Results Eighty-four percent of NB-patients showed potentially therapeutically targetable somatic alterations (including point mutations, copy number variations and mRNA over-expression). Sixty-six percent of samples showed alterations, graded as “very high priority”, that are validated to be directly targetable by an approved drug or an investigational agent. A molecular targeted therapy was applied for four patients, while a genetic counseling was suggested to two patients having one pathogenic germline variant in known cancer predisposition genes. Out of eleven samples implanted in mice, five gave rise to (C)PDX, all preserved in a local PDX Bio-bank. Interestingly, comparing all molecular alterations and histological and immunophenotypic features among the original patient’s tumors and PDX/CPDX up to second generation, a high grade of similarity was observed. Notably, also 3D models conserved immunophenotypic features and molecular alterations of the original tumors. Conclusions PREME confirms the possibility of identifying targetable genomic alterations in NB, indeed, a molecular targeted therapy was applied to four NB patients. PREME paves the way to the creation of clinically relevant repositories of faithful patient-derived (C)PDX and 3D models, on which testing precision, NB standard-of-care and experimental medicines.

Abstract

Recent advancements in communication technologies have significantly enhanced localization techniques, improving both accuracy and operating modes. Initially, localization methods relied on global navigation satellite systems, offering high accuracy but proving inefficient in Non-Line-of-Sight scenarios. Furthermore, the absence of a passive mode, where the user can be localized without explicitly requesting it, renders these methods unsuitable for applications like passive tracking systems. Fingerprinting methods, a pattern matching techniques based on signal power estimation from target devices and distance estimation from reference points, can be seen as a valid and promising alternative. However, these methods face limitations due to extensive measurement campaigns needed to establish accurate sampling systems within specific areas and the substantial amount of data required for machine learning algorithms to achieve optimal performance. This study introduces a novel fingerprinting method capable of passive operation, involving all smartphones within a designated area, suitable for both indoor and outdoor scenarios. The proposed solution leverages Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to augment fingerprinting datasets, enhancing machine learning models’ capabilities. Additionally, the offline phase’s cost-effectiveness is improved by integrating a Bayesian system as a secondary machine learning component.
