However, government regulations to handle the COVID-19 pandemic forced employees in Western Europe to work from home, drastically reducing the opportunity to informally meet colleagues. Prior research suggests that people respond to uncertainty and threat by either “widening” or “winnowing” their social networks (Smith, Menon, & Thompson, 2012; Woehler et al., 2021). When employees winnow their social networks by reducing the number and frequency of social interactions, they also reduce their access to valuable opportunities (Burt, 1992). Thus, identifying why employees widen or winnow their workplace social networks in response to a working from home situation—such as the one caused by the COVID-19 pandemic—is a vital, yet understudied undertaking To test our hypotheses, we collected rich longitudinal social network data at a professional service firm headquartered in the Netherlands between 2019 and 2021. The organization’s employees were forced to work from home to the Dutch regulations to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which enabled us to study the change in networking behavior that resulted from the working from home situation. Our analyses show that proactive work behavior has a positive effect on network widening and a negative effect on network deepening. This effect is moderated by network perception, such that these effects are stronger when employees do not perceive a negative effect of the working from home situation on their workplace social networks.

Storm events lead to mobilization of particles as well as organic contaminants that can pose a risk to river ecosystems. Assessment of total loads of particle-bound and dissolved contaminants in rivers is challenging, especially during rain events since multiple, often unknown contamination sources may be triggered, among them tributaries, combined sewer overflows, direct soil and road runoff, and the riverbed sediment. We investigated whether cytotoxicity (i.e., reduction of the cell viability of human cell lines) could be used as a proxy for the total chemical mixture to assess the transport of organic contaminant mixtures either in particle-associated form or in the aqueous phase. Time-proportional composite samples were collected in the Ammer River (Southwestern Germany) during two storm events in June 2021. All samples were screened for 127 organic contaminants and cytotoxicity in the water and particle phase separately. In total, 56 organic compounds were found, of which 14 and 34 were detected only in the water and particle extracts, respectively, and eight compounds were present in both phases. Thermodynamic equilibrium between the aqueous phase and suspended solids was observed for four compounds namely triphenyl phosphate, octocrylene, galaxolide, and p-chlorocresol. Substances that were not in equilibrium were mainly constituents of plastics and tire rubber, and their high concentrations in the particle phase were probably due to extractions from the particles themselves. Linear correlations between TSS and total compound concentrations were found for 17 PAHs and two musk fragrances, suggesting stable particle loadings and aqueous concentrations over the course of the rain event, most likely due to particle delivery from a particle source with a constant degree of contamination. Contains fulltext : 253280.pdf (Author’s version postprint ) (Open Access), Scholars typically view cross-legacy boundary spanners – employees who develop and maintain social relationships with coworkers from both legacy organizations – as the key integrators in mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Organizations even formally appoint employees with cross-legacy responsibilities to support the post-merger integration process. Recent research has started to emphasize, however, how difficult it can be to reap the benefits of a boundary-spanning position. Building and maintaining formal or informal boundary-spanning ties is costly because it requires time, attention, and political savviness. To better understand the perks and pitfalls of cross-legacy boundary-spanning, the authors identify and describe its structural and sociocultural dimensions and explain how they influence cross-legacy boundary-spanning in M&A contexts. The authors argue that the two dimensions can be seen as boundary conditions to the positive relationship between cross-legacy boundary spanning and post-merger integration. This chapter highlights the potential dark side of cross-legacy boundary-spanning and proposes a multi-dimensional model to explain how cross-legacy boundary spanners can avoid the pitfalls and promote the perks of their position in support of successful post-merger integration.

Corporate entrepreneurship is a process that stimulates entrepreneurial behavior, enabling organizations to respond to changing circumstances, pursue new opportunities, and secure their long-term viability. Prior research has suggested several models that capture the corporate entrepreneurship process and identify a range of factors that stimulate or stifle entrepreneurial behavior. These models greatly improved our understanding of corporate entrepreneurship, but they do not explicitly acknowledge the social context of organizations and employees. In this dissertation, I develop and test a theoretical framework that provides a network perspective on corporate entrepreneurship (the NPCE framework). The NPCE framework shows when and why the social context plays a decisive role in the corporate entrepreneurship process. The results of three empirical studies provide support for the NPCE framework and demonstrate that the social context can evoke entrepreneurial and conservative behavior. The key implication of this finding for future corporate entrepreneurship research is that the omission of the social context leads to an incomplete understanding of the corporate entrepreneurship process.

We recently described a protein O-glycosylation pathway conserved in all species of the Burkholderia genus that results in the synthesis and incorporation of a trisaccharide glycan to membrane-exported proteins. Here, we exploited this system to construct and evaluate a diagnostic tool for glanders. Burkholderia mallei, the causative agent of glanders, is a highly infectious and fatal zoonotic pathogen that infects horses, mules, donkeys, and occasionally humans. A highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool is crucial for the control, elimination, and eradication of B. mallei infections. We constructed plasmids carrying synthetic genes encoding a modified, previously unannotated Burkholderia glycoprotein containing three glycosylation sequons fused to the cholera toxin B-subunit. The resulting proteins were glycosylated in the B. cenocepacia K56-2 parental strain, but not in glycosylation-deficient mutants, as determined by SDS-PAGE and fluorescent lectin blots. One of these glycoproteins was used as an antigen in ELISA and western blots to screen a panel of serum samples collected from glanders-infected and healthy horses, which were previously investigated by complement fixation test and indirect ELISA based on a semi-purified fraction of B. mallei. We show that ELISA and western blot assays based on our glycoprotein antigen provide 100% specificity, with a sensitivity greater than 88%. The glycoprotein antigen was recognized by serum samples collected from patients infected with B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, B. multivorans, and B. cenocepacia. Our results indicate that protein O-glycosylation in Burkholderia can be exploited as a biomarker for diagnosis of Burkholderia-associated infections.
