Smectic liquid crystal films a few molecular layers thick that are freely suspended in air are used as a model system to study the coalescence of fluids in two dimensions. High-speed video microscopy is used to observe the coalescence of islands, which are thicker, disk-shaped regions of the film, in a process driven by the line tension associated with edge dislocations along the island boundaries and limited by viscous dissipation in the liquid crystal and in the surrounding air. The early time growth of the bridge connecting the merging islands reveals much slower dynamics than predicted by Hopper's classical hydrodynamic model of coalescence of two infinitely long, fluid cylinders in vacuum, a discrepancy proposed to be due to significant dissipation in the background film and in the air that is not included in Hopper's theory. At late times, the elliptical merged island relaxes exponentially to a circular shape, at rates that are described quantitatively by a model originally developed for the evolution of fluid domains in Langmuir films., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Semiconductor light emitters compatible with standard Si integration technology (SIT) are of particular interest for overcoming limitations in the operating speed of microelectronic devices 1-3. Light sources based on group-IV elements would be SIT compatible but suffer from the poor optoelectronic properties of bulk Si and Ge. Here, we demonstrate that epitaxially grown Ge quantum dots (QDs) in a fully coherent Si matrix show extraordinary optical properties if partially amorphised by Ge-ion bombardment (GIB). The GIB-QDs exhibit a quasi-direct-band gap and show, in contrast to conventional SiGe nanostructures, almost no thermal quenching of the photoluminescence (PL) up to room-temperature (RT). Microdisk resonators with embedded GIB-QDs exhibit threshold-behaviour and super-linear increase of the integrated PL-intensity (IPL) with increasing excitation power Pexc which indicates light amplification by stimulated emission in a fully SIT-compatible group-IV nano-system.

Lutetium-Yttrium Orthosilicate doped with Cerium (LYSO:Ce), as a bright scintillating crystal, is a candidate for calorimetry applications in strong ionizing-radiation fields and large high-energy hadron fluences as are expected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider after the planned High-Luminosity upgrade. There, proton-proton collisions will produce fast hadron fluences up to ~5E14/cm^2 in the large-rapidity regions of the calorimeters. The performance of LYSO:Ce has been investigated, after exposure to different fluences of 24 GeV/c protons. Measured changes in optical transmission as a function of proton fluence are presented, and the evolution over time due to spontaneous recovery at room temperature is studied. The activation of materials will also be an issue in the described environment. We describe epitaxial Ge/Si multilayers with cross-plane thermal conductivities which can be systematically reduced to exceptionally low values, as compared both with bulk and thin-film SiGe alloys of the same average concentration, by simply changing the thicknesses of the constituent layers. Ab initio calculations reveal that partial interdiffusion of Ge into the Si spacers, which naturally results from Ge segregation during growth, plays a determinant role, lowering the thermal conductivity below what could be achieved without interdiffusion (perfect superlattice), or with total interdiffusion (alloy limit). This phenomenon is similar to the one previously observed in alloys with embedded nanoparticles, and it stresses the importance of combining alloy and nanosized scatterers simultaneously to minimize thermal conductivity. Our calculations thus suggest that superlattices with sharp interfaces, which are commonly sought but difficult to realize, are worse than compositionally-modulated Si1-xGex multilayers in the search for materials with ultralow thermal conductivities., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Heteroepitaxially grown bilayers of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) on top of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) thin films were investigated by focusing on electric transport properties as well as on magnetism and orbital occupation at the interface. Transport measurements on YBCO single layers and on YBCO/LCMO bilayers, with different YBCO thickness $d_Y$ and constant LCMO thickness $d_L=50$\,nm, show a significant reduction of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ only for $d_Y<10$\,nm,with only a slightly stronger $T_c$ suppression in the bilayers, as compared to the single layers. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements confirm recently published data of an induced magnetic moment on the interfacial Cu by the ferromagnetically ordered Mn ions, with antiparallel alignment between Cu and Mn moments. However, we observe a significantely larger Cu moment than previously reported, indicating stronger coupling between Cu and Mn at the interface. This in turn could result in an interface with lower transparency, and hence smaller spin diffusion length, that would explain our electric transport data, i.e.smaller $T_c$ suppression. Moreover, linear dichroism measurements did not show any evidence for orbital reconstruction at the interface, indicating that a large change in orbital occupancies through hybridization is not necessary to induce a measurable ferromagnetic moment on the Cu atoms., Comment: 8 Figures

The Observation and Analysis of Smectic Islands in Space (OASIS) project comprises a series of experiments that probe the interfacial and hydrodynamic behavior of thin spherical bubbles of smectic liquid crystal in microgravity. Smectic films are the thinnest known structures formed of condensed phases, making them ideal for studies of two-dimensional (2D) coarsening dynamics and thermocapillary phenomena. The OASIS flight hardware was launched on SpaceX-6 in April 2015 and experiments were carried out on the International Space Station using four different smectic A and C liquid crystal materials in separate sample chambers. We will describe the behavior of collective island dynamics on the bubbles, including temperature-gradient-induced thermomigration, 2D Rayleigh-Plateau Instability, Oswald ripening dynamics, the single and multiple island diffusion on the curved surface and coalescence-driven coarsening dynamics of island emulsions in microgravity. On Earth, such island emulsions would rapidly sediment to the bottom of the bubble and coalesce, but in microgravity, coarsening of the emulsion can be observed free of gravitational effects.
