Wine spirits are typically aged in wooden barrels. Recently, alternative ageing technologies, such as those using wood fragments in wine spirits stored in stainless steel tanks, have been investigated. However, a significant lack of information regarding the potential evolution of these beverages after bottling still remains. This study assessed the 12-month evolution of aroma in bottled wine spirits aged with chestnut wood using different technologies, including fragment application with several micro-oxygenation strategies and barrels (traditional). Chemical analysis using GC-FID and GC–MS methods, along with sensory analysis, was conducted on all sampled aged wine spirits. Significant changes in volatile compounds were detected over time, including volatile phenols, acids, and esters. Multivariate data analysis distinguished traditional and alternative aged samples, with slight sample discrimination based on bottle storage. Regarding the sensory results, a significant effect of the time in bottle in several sensory attributes was found, while the ageing technologies mainly affected the gustatory attributes. The tasters were also asked to rate the overall quality of the samples, which seems to be favoured by the time in the bottle. This initial assessment of the impact of 1 year of glass bottle storage on the volatile and sensory composition of aged wine spirits highlights that this stage must be considered as an additional technological factor in their production process. To make different packages with various filling quantities better comparable for their packaging material use, in this study the packaging material use efficiency was defined as the ratio of fill good amount to the packaging weight. Several hundred rigid packages (tubes, bottles, cans, and carton packages) for liquid and higher‐viscous fast‐moving consumer goods, e.g., beverages and personal care products, were analyzed (weight) and more than >1000 data sets were taken from packaging suppliers of glass and PET packaging. As expected, glass packaging is heavier than PET packaging by a factor of around 10, and with a higher filling volume less packaging per amount of food is required. The material use efficiency of glass and PET bottles can differ by up to a factor of 3 within one filling quantity. The change in consumption habits, the need for product differentiation and the transition to eco‐sustainable wine production have led to the adoption of alternative packaging solutions, moving beyond the traditional glass bottle. This study employs experimental auctions with a sample of 100 participants to assess consumer willingness to pay for both bag‐in‐box and traditional glass bottle packaging. Using statistical tests and regression analysis, we find that consumer preferences for wine packaging formats significantly influence purchasing decisions and perceptions of product quality. Notably, consumers show a lower willingness to pay for the same wine when packaged in a bag‐in‐box than a bottle, and taste does not influence the willingness to pay. Moreover, the preference for bottled wine seems to be socially influenced. This study enriches the understanding of consumer behaviour regarding packaging preferences and provides actionable insights for the wine industry, retailers, policymakers and consumers. This study monitored the contamination of 32 plasticizers in olive oil throughout the production and storage process. Samples were collected at different stages of production from three olive oil production lines in distinct regions of Portugal and analyzed for 23 phthalates and 9 phthalates substitutes to identify contamination sources. The developed analytical method employed liquid–liquid extraction with hexane/methanol (1:4, v/v), followed by centrifugation, extract removal, and freezing as a clean-up step. Analysis was conducted using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), with detection limits ranging from 0.001 to 0.103 mg/kg. The results revealed that plasticizer concentrations progressively increased at each stage of the production process, although unprocessed olives also contained contaminants. Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) was the most prevalent compound, but all phthalates regulated by the European Union for food contact materials were detected, as well as some unregulated plasticizers. In a few packaged olive oils, DINP concentrations exceeded the specific migration limits established by European regulations. Samples stored in glass and plastic bottles showed no significant differences in plasticizer concentrations after six months of storage. However, higher concentrations were observed in plastic-packaged samples after 18 months of storage. Our findings indicate that the primary source of plasticizer contamination in olive oil originates from the production process itself, except for prolonged storage in plastic bottles, which should be avoided. Background: Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is commonly formulated into otic preparations to treat otitis externa, although evidence of stability and antimicrobial efficacy with long‐term storage is lacking. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of storage time on chemical stability and in vitro antimicrobial activity of SSD diluted in sterile water, including two 1% suspensions using SSD pharmaceutical‐grade powder stored at room temperature (RT) in plastic or sterile glass bottles, and a 1:9 dilution using prescription SSD 1% cream stored at RT in a sterile glass bottle. Materials and Methods: Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) assessed chemical stability. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole‐susceptible and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole‐resistant strains of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (SP), meticillin‐resistant (MR) SP, S. schleiferi (SS), MRSS, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli evaluated by 24 h time–kill analysis assessed in vitro antimicrobial efficacy. Each assessment was performed at zero, one, three and six months of storage. Results: LC–MS/MS showed no significant change in concentration over time for any suspension. When adjusted for time and species/strain, all SSD suspensions showed significant reductions in colony forming units (cfu)/mL at 24 h (p < 0.001). Including all suspensions, a bactericidal effect (minimum 3‐log cfu/mL reduction at 24 h) occurred against 94% of total isolates, with failure against 33 of 552 isolates (6%). Bactericidal failure was more likely with the cream‐based suspension (p < 0.05) and at six months (p < 0.01). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Powder‐based and cream‐based SSD/sterile water suspensions showed no significant change in concentration and demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial activity for six months. In this study, we utilized defatted yellow nutsedges meals as raw material to develop a craft beer and subsequently analyzed preservation quality throughout its shelf life. Our study determined that the optimal fermentation conditions for the craft beer included the use of Saaz hops, US-04 yeast, and the addition of 15% de-fatted yellow nutsedges. Under these conditions, the resulting beer exhibited an alcohol content of 4.50%, a foam retention time of 224.00 seconds, a color measurement of 10.00 EBC, a total acid content of 1.70 mL/100 mL, and a bitterness level of 22.15. Compared to glass bottles (GB) and aluminum cans (AC), the aroma content of craft beer packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle was lower, while the diacetyl levels were higher on shelf life. • Differences in drug formulation composition can impact subvisible particle morphology. • Different drug containers can impact particle morphology among a range of mAbs. Some mAbs may have more similar particle morphologies to each other in certain containers. • Exposure of drugs to sequential stresses, commonly encountered in the drug manufacturing process, can lead to different particle morphologies. Subvisible particle count is a biotherapeutics stability indicator widely used by pharmaceutical industries. A variety of stresses that biotherapeutics are exposed to during development can impact particle morphology. By classifying particle morphological differences, stresses that have been applied to monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) can be identified. This study aims to evaluate common biotherapeutic drug storage and shipment conditions that are known to impact protein aggregation. Two different studies were conducted to capture particle images using micro-flow imaging and to classify particles using a convolutional neural network. The first study evaluated particles produced in response to agitation, heat, and freeze-thaw stresses in one mAb formulated in five different formulations. The second study evaluated particles from two common drug containers, a high-density polyethylene bottle and a glass vial, in six mAbs exposed solely to agitation stress. An extension of this study was also conducted to evaluate the impact of sequential stress exposure compared to exposure to one stress alone, on particle morphology. Overall, the convolutional neural network was able to classify particles belonging to a particular formulation or container. This article reports the durability performance of modified concrete with silica nanoparticles and a high volume of waste ceramic tiles under varying elevated temperatures. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with 60% waste ceramic tiles powder (WTCPs) and supplemented with 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% nanopowders from waste glass bottles (WGBNPs) as a rich source of silica. The natural aggregates (both coarse and fine) were fully replaced by the crushed waste ceramic tiles (WTCAs). After 28 days of curing, the modified specimens were exposed to varying elevated temperatures (200, 400, 600, and 800 °C) in a furnace followed by air cooling. Tests such as residual compressive strength, weight loss, ultrasonic plus velocity, visual appearance, and microstructural analysis were conducted. Additionally, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to validate the performance of the proposed predictive equations, as well as their terms, using p-values and F-values. It was discerned that OPC substitution with WTCPs and WGBNPs significantly improved the concrete's performance under elevated temperatures. It is observed that the addition of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% WGBNPs lowered the concrete deterioration by increasing the residual strength and reducing both internal and external cracks. This study provides some new insights into the utilization of WTCPs and WGBNPs to produce sustainable and eco-friendly modified concrete with high spalling resistance characteristics at elevated temperatures. This paper presents the glass prismatic bottles and fragments brought to light in the Roman settlement of Intercisa (today Dunaújváros, Hungary). Bottles occur in a low number among the finds of the vicus and the castellum of Intercisa. Bottles and containers account for around 15% of all vessel fragments, while prismatic bottles have a lower share, around 4%. Almost all identifiable fragments are square bottles, with a single rectangular one amongst them. Their designs vary; most feature geometric motifs, while plant motifs and inscriptions are less frequent. Most fragments presented below are yet unpublished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional methodologies, such as mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy, have been widely employed for precise water vapor isotope measurements. Nevertheless, these techniques are limited by logistical challenges in fieldwork, consequently constraining the temporal and spatial resolution of measurements. Specifically, water vapor isotope measurements are primarily limited to near-surface levels, while measurements associated with processes aloft connecting tropospheric water vapor to surface precipitation are notably scarce. Portable sampling devices, such as air bags and glass bottles, have therefore become necessary alternatives for collecting, storing, and transporting gaseous samples in diverse environments prior to analysis with less portable instruments. In drone-based high-altitude vapor sampling, air bags are preferred for their lighter weight and greater flexibility compared to glass bottles. Nevertheless, they present specific challenges, such as potential sample contamination and isotopic fractionation during storage, primarily due to the inherent permeability of air bags. Here, we developed a theoretical model for water vapor diffusion through the sampling bag surface, with parameters calibrated through laboratory experiments. This model enables the reconstruction of the initial isotopic composition of sampled vapor based on measurements obtained within the bag and from the surrounding environment. We applied this correction method to air samples collected at various pressures up to the upper troposphere using an air bag-mounted drone that we developed, thereby estimating the initial isotopic composition and uncertainty based on our observations. The corrected observations closely match the IASI satellite data. Our correction method significantly enhances the reliability and applicability of water vapor isotope observations conducted using drones equipped with air bags. This approach leverages the strengths of drone-based air bag sampling while mitigating its limitations, thus facilitating the convenient collection of isotopic data throughout the troposphere. To evaluate the mechanical properties, fluoride release, radiopacity, and setting characteristics of dental cements derived from highly reactive ionomer glasses and bottle glass mixtures. Two highly reactive glass series, LG99 and LG117, were synthesized, milled, sieved, and characterized using XRD and laser particle size analysis. These glasses were mixed with predetermined ratios of ground bottle glass, poly(acrylic acid), and aqueous tartaric acid to form glass ionomer cements. The cements' working time (WT), setting time (ST), fluoride release, radiopacity, compressive strength (CS), and elastic modulus (EM) were evaluated. Mean differences in CS were analyzed using multivariate ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test at p = 0.05. The WT and ST for both groups ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 min. LG99 series cements showed significantly higher CS (∼65 MPa) and EM (∼2 GPa) than LG117 series (p < 0.05). Both series showed similar fluoride release profiles, peaking at 1.2 mmol/L at 28 days. Radiopacity for LG99 ranged from 0.97 to 1.34, while LG117 ranged from 0.60 to 0.95. Solid state 27Al magic-angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) confirmed the presence of Al(IV) and Al(VI), indicating setting completion by one day for both series. Bottle glass showed a chemical shift at 55.8 ppm, overlapping with LG99′s Al(IV) signal. The 19F MAS NMR spectra revealed Al-F and F-Sr(n) species in all glasses, with LG117 forming CaF 2 after one day in deionized water. Mixtures of highly reactive ionomer glass and bottle glass produced cements with satisfactory properties for dental applications. AbstractObjectiveDesignStudy SampleResultsConclusionsAudiological tests on smartphones require consistent microphone recordings across device types with a reasonable standard uncertainty (2-3 Decibel (dB)) of the sound pressure level at the microphone. However, the calibration of smartphone microphones by the non-expert user is still an unsolved issue. We show that whistling on standardized glass bottles permits a coarse sound level calibration with an uncertainty that is smaller than the standard uncertainty of clinical audiograms (4.9dB) and enough for mobile health (mHealth) products.We define and test a calibration procedure with bottle-whistles for smartphones. The empirical sound pressure levels are used to calculate the mean and standard deviation of a single measurement.Two uncalibrated studies with a total of 30 participants, one calibrated study with 11 participants.The mean maximal sound pressure level of 330 ml Vichy-shape bottle-whistles at 50 cm distance is 92.8 ± 1.6dB sound pressure level (SPL). The sound pressure level variation of a single measurement is 3.0dB SPL.In comparison to other possible ways of level calibration estimates for smartphones (e.g. level of own voice, level of common environmental sounds), the current method appears to be robust in background noise and easily reproducible with glass bottles of defined dimensions. The phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of whole grape juices from Vitis labrusca and Brazilian hybrids in two training systems were analyzed. Genotypes of V. labrusca ('Bordô' and 'Isabel') and Brazilian hybrids ('IAC 138-22 Máximo' and 'BRS Violeta') were grafted onto the rootstock 'IAC 766 Campinas' (106-8 'Mgt' × Vitis caribaea) and trained on low and high trellis. After harvest, the grapes were destemmed and the berries macerated in a roller crusher. Following hot extraction without pressurization of the pomace and gentle pressing of the blend (skins, must, and seeds), the juices were bottled in amber glass bottles and pasteurized. The physicochemical and colorimetric parameters of the juices, as well as the levels of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, total monomeric anthocyanins, antioxidant activity, and polyphenolic profile, were evaluated. The juices were also subjected to sensory analysis (CAAE: 65549817.7.0000.5411). There was broad variation in all assessed characteristics. The results obtained demonstrate that the training system and grape genotype used in juice production are highly related to the presence of sugars, acidity, and bioactive compounds. Juices made from 'Bordô', 'IAC 138-22 Máximo' and 'BRS Violeta' grapes stood out from 'Isabel' juices, the main grape variety used in Brazilian juice and wine production. All juices contain bioactive compounds in considerable concentrations, indicating beverages with high antioxidant activity and, consequently, high biological potential, with the use of high trellis in vine cultivation potentially increasing concentrations. Improper waste management is causing global environmental problems. Waste glass may have adverse impacts on the ecosystem. While a substantial amount of soda-lime glass bottle (SGB) undergoes recycling to create new glass items, a significant volume still ends up in landfills. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the potential use of SGB in foamed concrete (FC) production as an aggregate replacement. SGB was substituted for sand in different weight fractions, ranging from 5 to 50%. The fresh state, mechanical, thermal, pore structure, and transport properties were examined. The findings showed a significant enhancement in the FC's mechanical properties when SGB replaced 20% of sand. The compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths exhibited a rise of up to 17.7, 39.4, and 43.8%, respectively. The findings also demonstrated that the addition of SGB improved the thermal conductivity, sorptivity, water absorption, and porosity. The scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the inclusion of 20% SGB caused a substantial decrease in void diameter and enhanced its uniformity. A comparison was made between the experimental data and predictions of the mechanical properties using various models of international standards, such as IS 456, ACI 318, NZS-3101, EC-02, AS 3600, and CEB-FIB, along with several references in the literature. The findings implied a strong correlation between the strength properties. The outcomes of this research offer valuable insights into both the possible advantages and constraints of using SGB in FC. Furthermore, this extensive laboratory investigation may serve as a guideline for future study and aid in the advancement of greener and more environmentally friendly FC alternatives. Cyclones are pivotal in mechanical process engineering and crucial in the complex field of separation technology. Their robustness and compact spatial requirements render them universally applicable and versatile across various industrial domains. Depending on the utilized fluid and field of application, both gas-based cyclones and hydrocyclones (HCs) are well established. Regarding HC design, enduring elongated flat cones have seen minimal alterations in shape and structure since their introduction over more than a hundred years ago. Experimental investigations regarding unconventional cone designs within scientific studies remain the exception. Therefore, this study focuses on alternative geometric configurations of the separation chambers and highlights their impact on separation and energy efficiency. To achieve this objective, different geometric shapes are investigated and retrofitted into HCs. The geometric foundation is derived from upcycled glass bottles. The repurposed bottles with a volume of 750 mL are used in conjunction with an inlet part, following the established Rietema design. Experimental tests are conducted with dilute phase separation, using 0.1–200 µm test particles in water. Comparisons between a bottle-based HC and a conventional Rietema design were conducted, establishing a benchmark against the standard. The findings revealed a noticeable correlation between separation efficiency and cone geometry. Conical designs demonstrated enhanced separation, particularly at lower volume flows. At the highest volume flow of 75 L min−1, the best performing bottle cyclones showed separation efficiencies of 78.5%, 78.4% and 77.9% and therefore are in a competitive range with 78.0% efficiency, achieved using the commercial Rietema design. Minimal disparities in cut sizes were observed in terms of separation grade efficiency among the models tested. Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bottle bioassay is a commonly used susceptibility test for measuring insect response to insecticide exposure. However, inconsistencies and high variability in insect response when conducting CDC bottle bioassays have been reported in previous publications. We hypothesized that the CDC bottle bioassay results may be compromised when expected and actual insecticide concentrations in the bottles are not equivalent and that inadequate bottle cleaning and/or loss during insecticide introduction and bottle storage steps could be responsible. We explored this hypothesis by quantifying insecticides using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in bottles that had been cleaned, prepared, and stored according to the CDC guidelines. Methods: We investigated the bottle cleaning, preparation, and storage methods outlined in the CDC bottle bioassay procedure to identify sources of irreproducibility. We also investigated the effectiveness of cleaning bottles by autoclaving because this method is commonly used in insecticide assessment laboratories. The two insecticides used in this study were chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin (λ-cyhalothrin). Insecticides were removed from glass bioassay bottles by rinsing with ethyl-acetate and n-hexane and then quantified using GC-MS/MS. Results: The CDC bottle bioassay cleaning methods did not sufficiently remove both insecticides from the glass bottles. The cleaning methods removed chlorpyrifos, which has higher water solubility, more effectively than λ-cyhalothrin. Chlorpyrifos experienced significant loss during the bottle-coating process whereas λ-cyhalothrin did not. As for bottle storage, no significant decreases in insecticide concentrations were observed for 6 h following the initial drying period for either insecticide. Conclusions: The CDC bottle bioassay protocol is susceptible to producing inaccurate results since its recommended bottle cleaning method is not sufficient and semi-volatile insecticides can volatilize from the bottle during the coating process. This can lead to the CDC bottle bioassay producing erroneous LC50 values. High levels of random variation were also observed in our experiments, as others have previously reported. We have outlined several steps that CDC bottle bioassay users could consider that would lead to improved accuracy and reproducibility when acquiring toxicity data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing interest in hemp and cannabis poses new questions about the influence of drying and storage conditions on the overall aroma and cannabinoids profile of these products. Cannabis inflorescences are subjected to drying shortly after harvest and then to storage in different containers. These steps may cause a process of rapid deterioration with consequent changes in precious secondary metabolite content, negatively impacting on the product quality and potency. In this context, in this work, the investigation of the effects of freeze vs tray drying and three storage conditions on the preservation of cannabis compounds has been performed. A multi-trait approach, combining both solid-phase microextraction (SPME) two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (SPME-GC × GC–MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), is presented for the first time. This approach has permitted to obtain the detailed characterisation of the whole cannabis matrix in terms of volatile compounds and cannabinoids. Moreover, multivariate statistical analyses were performed on the obtained data, helping to show that freeze drying conditions is useful to preserve cannabinoid content, preventing decarboxylation of acid cannabinoids, but leads to a loss of volatile compounds which are responsible for the cannabis aroma. Furthermore, among storage conditions, storage in glass bottle seems more beneficial for the retention of the initial VOC profile compared to open to air dry tray and closed high-density polyethylene box. However, the glass bottle storage condition causes formation of neutral cannabinoids at the expenses of the highly priced acid forms. This paper provides a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing glass and PET vinegar bottles in the Greek market to determine the more eco-friendly option. The analysis covers a 500 mL glass bottle and a 390 mL PET bottle, examining eleven subsystems from raw material acquisition to recycling. The initial findings indicate that glass bottles require more resources and have a greater environmental impact than PET bottles across several factors, despite the traditional perception of glass as being environmentally superior. This difference is partly due to the heavier weight of glass bottles than PET bottles. The results highlight the complexity of LCA studies. While LCA methodology has limitations, such as data collection quality, system boundary definitions, assessment challenges, and costs, it provides valuable indicators. This study underscores the need for more extensive data collection and systematic LCA application. By integrating LCA methodology through pilot projects and developing internal expertise, companies can make more accurate assessments, leading to sustainable industrial practices and growth. Currently, a limited understanding of how packaging and storage conditions affect product quality is a major factor contributing to the short shelf life of seasoning powder products. To address this problem, the objective of this study was to explore the impact of four types of packaging and different temperature conditions (ranging from 5 to 45°C) during 110 days of storage on product quality, specifically the moisture content, astaxanthin content, and total aerobic microbial count. The packaging materials investigated included aluminum film‐coated polyethylene bags (Al/PE bag), kraft paper‐coated polyethylene bags (PE/kraft paper bag), polyethylene terephthalate (PET bottle), and glass bottles. Kinetic models of degradation astaxanthin, moisture absorption, and aerobic microbial growth were developed. The results indicated that PET bottles were the most effective packaging material to maintain the moisture content and astaxanthin levels. Furthermore, temperatures between 5 and 15°C were found to be optimal for the preservation of astaxanthin content, the stabilization of moisture content, and the inhibition of microbial growth. At the same time, first‐order, Peleg, and Gompertz models are suitable for describing the mechanism of transformation for astaxanthin, moisture, and microbial aerobic growth with a value of R2 > 0.9. The Mamluk Turkish State, which ruled in Egypt and Syria between the 13th and 16th centuries, has been the source of works that will ensure that its name will be remembered in every era in terms of glass art. It supported and contributed to the development of the trade and production workshops that existed in the region throughout history and were of great importance. The region had very rich resources in terms of infrastructure and materials, and due to its productivity and material availability, very good quality glass was produced. Known for their robustness and clarity, these glasses became famous for their ornamentation during the Mamlūk period and remained popular and imitated for a long time. In this study, we have tried to describe the development of glass production in the region and the contribution of the Mamluks to this production. In the light of the findings, we have tried to draw a general framework about the decoration and decoration techniques of glassware produced in the region. The technical and ornamental analysis of a Mamluk glass bottle, which has survived intact and is currently exhibited in the Dom Museum in Vienna and stands out with its ornamentation, has been analyzed. Pollution originating from the life cycle of packaging is increasing and can have potentially irreversible consequences for the environment. In the beverage industry, the most common materials used for the production of primary packaging are glass and plastic. The objective of this study was to compare the environmental impacts of polyethylene terephthalate and glass bottles. The Leopold Matrix was applied to evaluate the environmental impact of the life cycle of both bottles, using information from a wide range of scientific articles and peer-reviewed indexed journals. The evaluation took into account the abiotic, biotic, and anthropic components generating negative consequences for ecosystems, human health, and fauna and flora. The study found that both containers generate negative environmental impacts throughout their life cycle. The influence of the bottle material (glass, PET), the reusability (reusable and disposable bottles), and the carbonization (still, medium, classic mineral water) on the filling ratio, packaging material use efficiency, cost, and shelf life were evaluated. Two hundred different bottles were purchased and characterized regarding their filling volume, the weight of the bottle, the weight of the closure, the weight of the label, and the maximum full-rim volume of the bottle. The packaging material use efficiency was calculated. The shelf life was evaluated by calculating the water vapor and carbon dioxide transmission rates. The ratio of filling volume to the packaging weight of disposable PET bottles was, on average, two times higher compared to returnable PET bottles and 20 times higher compared to glass bottles. Shelf life was, on average, higher than factor two for glass bottles compared to PET bottles. On average, but not in all cases, mineral water packaged in disposable PET bottles was cheaper compared to reusable PET and glass bottles. This paper provides a benchmark for the packaging community, especially when data for life cycle assessment are required, and the different advantages and disadvantages of different bottle materials for mineral water are shown. Head trauma is frequently related to the misuse of drinking vessels as weapons. Forensic reports usually evaluate these blunt injuries as having occurred in scenarios where the alcohol intake is high. Fatal consequences are seen in blows with glass bottles aiming at the head. To prove the outcome that a glass bottle thrown to the head could cause, three intact human cadaver heads were impacted with 1-liter glass bottles at 9.5 m/s using a drop-tower. The impact location covered the left temporal bone, sphenoid bone, and zygomatic arch. The contact between the head and the bottle was produced at an angle of 90° with (1) the valve of the bottle, (2) the bottom of the bottle, and (3) with the head rotated 20° in the frontal plane touching again with the bottom of the bottle. The three bottles remained intact after the impact, and the injury outcomes were determined by computed tomography (CT). The alterations were highly dependent on the impact orientation. The outcome varied from no injury to severe bone fractures. In the most injurious case (#3), fractures were identified in the cranial base, sphenoid bone, and zygomatic bone. These testing conditions were selected to replicate one specific legal case, as required by the plaintiff. Physical disputes with bar glassware can lead to complex combinations of blunt and sharp-force injuries. Levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in surface and underground water sources from Ifite Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State were investigated. Ecological and human health exposure risks were assessed following US EPA methods. The surface water sources are Isiachala, Iyiutu, Ube, Ahala Tabasi, Nabaloku, Atammele, Ogbu streams, and Omambala river. Underground water sources include Igbazine, Double, Ogba, Onowulugbe, Orator, and Commodore hand-dug wells. The water samples were collected using precleaned 500 cm3 glass bottles and were analysed for the presence of 16 US EPAPAHs using Gas Chromatography – Flame Ionisation Detector (GC- FID). The validated method showed that regression (R2) for all the PAHs ranged between 0.9622 and 0.9983. Limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.0033 to 0.1236 µg L−1 and limits of quantification (LOQ) from 0.0109 to 0.4115 µg L−1. Precision CV values ranged from 5.12 to 18.24%, and recovery values of the analytes in water varied between 83.94 and 99.99%. Naphthalene and chrysene were present in all the water samples while pyrene was absent in all except in Iyiutu. All the PAHs analysed were detected in Isiachala and Iyiutu except pyrene which was absent in Isiachala. All the samples contained at least three PAHs with concentrations ranging from 1.003 ng/µl of benzo[a] pyrene in Tabasi to 128.652 ng/µl of chrysene in Iyiutu. Ecological risk shows that the value was above US EPA background value. Human health risk assessment depicts that hazard index and total cancer risk ranges from 9.63E-05 to 1.93E-02. This study has shown that the inhabitants of Ifite Ogwari will experience adverse health and cancer illnesses over some time and therefore, a holistic approach by researchers and government agencies is needed to mitigate the ecological and health risk effects. This study explores the potential of aluminum wine bottles as a sustainable alternative to traditional glass bottles, emphasizing their recyclability and environmental advantages. It reviews the potential use of Al-Mn-Mg 3xxx alloys in beverage can bodies and examines various applications of aluminum containers in packaging, including recyclable beverage containers. The manufacturing processes for aluminum bottles, including casting, rolling, punching, and deformation techniques, are discussed in detail, with a particular focus on their impact on mechanical properties and microstructure. The preference for 1xxx aluminum alloys in impact extrusion is explained, highlighting their lower flow stress and higher formability compared to 3xxx alloys, and the microstructural changes induced by various processing steps are analyzed. Challenges related to using recycled aluminum and their effects on mechanical properties and microstructure during aluminum bottle production are also addressed. One objective is to increase the proportion of recycled alloyed material used in aluminum bottle manufacturing. Depending on the technique employed, the fraction of alloyed recycled material can vary. The percentage of recycled alloyed material (3xxx series Al alloys) in cold backward impact extrusion could be raised by 60%. High-speed blow forming could facilitate the production of aluminum bottles with a recycled alloyed material ranging from 50 to 100% of the 3xxx series aluminum can body alloys. The high-speed drawing and ironing (DWI) process can produce large-format aluminum bottles (up to 750 mL), utilizing at least 90% of the recycled 3xxx series can body stock. Furthermore, the paper discusses the importance of optimized heat treatment designs in enhancing mechanical properties and controlling microstructural evolution in alloyed aluminum materials, such as 3xxx series alloys. The study concludes with a need for further research to deepen our understanding of the metallurgical aspects of aluminum bottle manufacturing and to optimize the use of recycled aluminum in packaging solutions, with a specific focus on improving mechanical properties and microstructural integrity. In 2022, 150 million tons of glass was produced globally, and approximately 47% of that amount was glass hollowware for tableware and food, beverage, and cosmetics packaging. Glass is considered one of the most recyclable materials as its properties and performance do not degrade upon reheating and reforming; yet only 21% of global production is recycled. The most recycled type of glass is soda–lime silicate bottle glass based on its widespread availability and its ability to accommodate higher levels of contamination compared to flat glass and specialty glass. Bottle glass manufacturers melt glass batch that is 10%–60% recycled glass cullet, limited only by the availability of pristine glass cullet that is free of contaminants such as plastic, metal, and organic material. Increasing rates of recycled content in glass manufacturing is stymied by the lack of a supply chain to deliver high quality glass cullet to manufacturers, as well as risk of material incompatibility and contamination. In this work, post‐consumer glass bottles of different colors, shapes, and brands were analyzed for chemical composition and thermal properties to quantify variation across five major color families: clear, blue, amber, forest green, and emerald green. This work shows that post‐consumer bottles of different colors and brands can be remelted without risk of material incompatibility and presents various processing methods to control color homogeneity in glass produced exclusively from mixed color cullet from recycled glass bottles. In Hungary, from January 1, 2024, the Government Decree of the 450/2023 (X. 4.) regulates the conditions for establishing and applying the deposit fee for pet bottles, metal cans, and glass bottles. The new Deposit-Refund System has been of serious interest among Hungarian consumers, since its rules interfere in the everyday lives of ordinary people, sometimes imposing a greater or lesser financial burden on them. The aim of our research was to find out the preliminary perceptions of Hungarian consumers about this system even before its introduction, since these perceptions can significantly influence its consumer acceptance in the future and provide an opportunity to examine and deal with critical factors in advance, and to reduce preliminary consumer concerns. To reach our research aim we conducted an online consumer survey with 8,225 people. According to our results, about half of the respondents consider the introduction of the new rules to be a promising idea, but at the same time, two-thirds of the respondents feel more or less discomfort about the new system. The preliminary expectations are therefore mostly negative, especially in the 'Those worried' and 'Those refusing' consumer segments. In addition to discomfort, environmental doubts and economic concerns also appear in consumer opinions, which can hinder the adoption of the new system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexible intravenous solution containers (IV bags) were introduced to the marketplace in the early 1970s. These new containers were designed to replace glass IV bottles and were quickly adopted widely for delivering medical solutions to patients throughout the world. The 40 years during which commercially available IV solutions in glass bottles were used, the healthcare industry grew dramatically with better patient outcomes while also reducing operational costs. These early developments then led to the rapid expansion of new medical devices that have been further developed to improve healthcare and reduce overall costs of the products and devices. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the medical device industry was founded on the development of the flexible poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) plastic IV tubing and bag. After the IV bag product lines grew to serve many markets, a new unmet need was discovered for an aseptically produced premixed drug container. This article will review how a new film was developed and used to produce the required aseptically made IV premixed drug product. It was, after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave "clearance to market", a ground-breaking product, never before thought possible for the highly FDA-regulated and controlled industry. Why was the work done: To investigate the impact of pasteurisation and storage in bottle on aroma compounds in pale lager beer. How was the work done: Pale lager beer was produced at an industrial scale with 100% pilsner malt and a bottom fermenting yeast. Samples were taken of unpasteurised beer from bright beer tank, after flash pasteurisation and six months after packaging in amber glass bottles. What are the main findings: Post pasteurisation, a marked increase was found in the concentration of 2,3-pentanedione (50%) and diacetyl (33%), presumably reflecting the decomposition by heat of precurser acetohydroxy acids. There was also a marginal increase in dimethyl sulphide (6%) with little or no change in other aroma compounds. Storage for six months in bottle, also resulted in an increase in the level of 2,3-pentanedione, diacetyl and dimethyl sulphide. The linear (Pearson) correlation was > 0.8 for both dimethyl sulphide and diacetyl, and 2,3-pentanedione and diacetyl. Accordingly, it was concluded that the levels in beer of dimethyl sulphide and 2,3-pentanedione are proportionally related to diacetyl. Why is the work important: This work provides an insight into the effects on flavour and aroma of lager of flash pasteurisation and subsequent storage in bottle. The inter-relationship between aroma compounds in beer suggests that such synergies may undermine the sensory perception of threshold levels and identification of specific aromas. Siemens is leading a £54 million R&D project to develop an optimized approach for boosting glass furnaces with electrical heating, which is estimated to cut UK emissions from glass manufacturing by 56%.
