The presented study involved designing a computer model of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) at laboratory scale. The data pertaining to the technical aspects of the bioreactor and quality indicators of wastewater constituted the input for the employed simulation tool, i.e. GPS-X software package. The results of a simulation involving a 12-hour operation cycle are presented in this work; each cycle included 6 phases: filling, mixing, aeration, settling, decantation and idling (wasting of excess sludge). The simulations were carried out using two different modes of aeration. Concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) was maintained at constant level of 2 mgO2/L using the PID controller in the first case. On the other hand, variation of DO concentration was employed in the aeration stage of the second variant, which was achieved using appropriately elaborated set point of oxygen concentration, considering the specific intervals in oxygen supply. The changes observed in DO concentration varied from 0.5 to 2.5 mgO2/L. This research proved that the second variant, involving variation of DO concentration, was characterised by reduced levels of pollution indicators in treated sewage, as well as lower consumption of electricity, both of which contributed towards improving the effluent quality and resulted in significant degree of dephosphatation.

Basing on the secondary warehouses in the donjon of Kłodzko Fortress, the authors of this paper discuss the subject of interference in the historical structure, as well as the opportunities that comes with such inclusion. They analyse the possibilities to use the space incorporated into the existing fabric of a historical object on the basis of a building survey. This article scrutinises the problem of interference in a very particular military object and all related issues that might arise in this area. Postindustrial warehouses are located in the donjon, which is the last ring of defence. These secondary buildings touch two interesting issues: the introduction of the new function to the whole complex and, on the other hand, the interference in the original form of the ramparts situated over casemated halls of the courtyard. To address this problem, the authors analyse the existing structure for its functionality, usability and design, presenting its advantages, disadvantages and perspectives in the context of the whole complex of Kłodzko Fortress. The fortress is an interesting tourist spot because of its location in the scale of the city and the Kłodzko Valley region. It might be considered as a nodal point for the touristic attractions of the area.

The direct release of energy from the groundwater under the building of the Sobieski Family Palace in Lublin, Poland, and the obtainment of heat and cooling energy for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC) provide an opportunity to reduce electricity and heat consumption and to limit CO2 emissions by 15–50%. The upgrade to the Sobieski Family Palace and the addition of new educational and administrative functions require state-of-the-art, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly solutions such as Fuel Cells and Hydrogen for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (FCH HVAC) systems. As part of the program "Research for high-quality air in architecture and urban studies," carried out since 2018 at the Institute of Architecture Planning, Department of Contemporary Architecture, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Lublin University of Technology, in 2021, further research was carried out in order to prepare for the potential implementation in 2022 of the project entitled "Development and Upgrade of the Former Sobieski Family Palace in Lublin. The main body of the building—educational and administrative function," whose chief designer was Architect J. Wrana, Lublin University of Technology, 2021. The objective of this paper is to identify technologies and solutions specifically designed for HVAC systems in upgraded and renovated historic buildings. This paper is also a call for cooperation among institutions, scientists, higher education institutions, as well as an expression of appreciation for the immense energy stored in groundwater. This energy not only has the lowest carbon footprint but also is the only generally accessible large storage source from which we were unable to obtain ecologically pure energy before the introduction of FCH technology. In this paper, the authors made attempt to analyse the influence of moisture in the external wall of a building on the distribution of the temperature field, using numerical and experimental methods. Studies were carried out in the places of heat leakage occurring in structural joints of a single-family residential building, built in the traditional technology. In this study, the thermal bridge parameters were calculated by determining the values of thermal and moisture identifiers. For this purpose, two three-dimensional models of the building partition were designed based on an existing structure, and the boundary conditions for simulations were determined. The obtained heat flux values made it possible to perform quantitative calculations of heat flux distributions and temperatures of construction joints within the thermal bridge occurrence area. Moreover, the accuracy of the final temperatures obtained after combining the mathematical models with the values determined from thermograms was evaluated. In order to validate the results of numerical simulation, a test model was used taking into account the parameters specified in PL-EN 15026. The analysis aimed to present the handiness of using the simulation at the stage of planning the design and thermomodernisation of buildings in the places particularly exposed to adverse terrain and atmospheric conditions. Laser scanning allows the acquiring of spatial data about existing objects. It is used as a modern inventory technique, most often in the creation of archival or conservation documentation. It gives the opportunity to obtain a very large amount of spatial data of the facility thus helping to improve operations in the field of conservation but also reduces the margin of error in the inventory and then design documentation. It is useful due to the growing BIM technology, through which three-dimensional models of existing objects of various scales are obtained. This article presents research comparing the traditional measurement method and the modern one with the use of a laser scanner. The research is a compilation of the duration of architectural inventory techniques as well as the accuracy of the measurements made and of the following architectural drawings. The result of the research is a relative percentage ratio showing the acceleration of inventory works with a simple construction object using modern assistive techniques compared to the traditional method. The palace in Krzesimów was built in the classicist style at the beginning of 19th century. The building is the part of the palace-park complex entered into the register of monuments because of its historical, aesthetical and landscape values. From 1970s, it is the headquarters of a social welfare home. Over the years, this function enforced many changes in the functional layout of the building to adapt it to the needs of people with various types and levels of disability. Despite many minor renovations and modifications, the palace didn't undergo complete overhaul, which would greatly improve the technical condition of the original fabric. This aim of article is to analyse introduced functional changes, which were supposed to facilitate the use of the building by the handicapped, and to consider what actions must be undertaken in order to improve its technical condition. The authors of the paper underline the need to start renovation works on the basis of the archive documentation, as well as conducted survey and research of its current technical condition. This paper discusses the role of sustainable landfilling of municipal waste in the current systems of municipal waste management systems as the manner of final disposal of wastes. The actual data considering share of landfilling as final waste disposal in various countries all over the world allowed to asses importance of this method. Special attention was paid to sustainable landfilling in developing or undeveloped courtiers of low economic incomes. Then, the paradigm of sustainable landfilling was presented and the most effective methods of landfill isolation by liners were discussed. The compacted clay liners were presented as the gainful option for the developing countries. The main determinants of the compacted clay liners' long-term liner sustainability were described as hydraulic conductivity, swell-shrinkage properties and, finally, ability of soil/substrate to sustain its hydraulic conductivity after cyclic drying and rewetting. Finally, possible application of low plasticity clays instead materials of high plasticity, prone to shrinking and swelling, to construction of sustainable compacted earthen liner was underlined. This paper presents the attempt of sustainable development assessment for one of the poorest regions of the European Union (EU), Lublin Voivodeship in Poland, during its first decade in the EU, i.e. 2004-2013. Our analyses, performed for all pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental-technical, were based on sustainable development indicators (SDIs). The set of 21 sustainable development indicators, based on freely available statistical data, was proposed in this paper. The SDIs for Lublin Voivodeship were compared to values for Poland and the European Union. The special attention was put to assessment of sustainable development diversification between urbanized and rural areas of Poland and Lublin province. Our analyses showed than both, Poland and Lublin Voivodeship, clearly developed during the last decade but their sustainable development is still endangered and slowed down by several causes.
