1. Temperature and composition disturbances in the southern auroral region of Jupiter revealed by JWST/MIRI

Abstract

Jupiters south polar region was observed by JWST Mid Infrared Instrument in December 2022. We used the Medium Resolution Spectrometer mode to provide new information about Jupiters South Polar stratosphere. The southern auroral region was visible and influenced the atmosphere in several ways. 1: In the interior of the southern auroral oval, we retrieved peak temperatures at two distinct pressure levels near 0.01 and 1 mbar, with warmer temperatures with respect to non auroral regions of 12 pm 2 K and 37 pm 4 K respectively. A cold polar vortex is centered at 65S at 10 mbar. 2: We found that the homopause is elevated to 590+25-118 km above the 1-bar pressure level inside the auroral oval compared to 460+60-50 km at neighboring latitudes and with an upper altitude of 350 km in regions not affected by auroral precipitation. 3: The retrieved abundance of C2H2 shows an increase within the auroral oval, and it exhibits high abundances throughout the polar region. The retrieved abundance of C2H6 increases towards the pole, without being localized in the auroral oval, in contrast with previous analysis. We determined that the warming at 0.01 mbar and the elevated homopause might be caused by the flux of charged particles depositing their energy in the South Polar Region. The 1 mbar hotspot may arise from adiabatic heating resulting from auroral driven downwelling. The cold region at 10 mbar may be caused by radiative cooling by stratospheric aerosols. The differences in spatial distribution seem to indicate that the hydrocarbons analyzed are affected differently by auroral precipitation.

Abstract

For the first time, we demonstrate the application of an inverse Compton scattering X-ray Source, driven by a laser-plasma accelerator, to image an additively manufactured component. X-rays with a mean energy of 380 keV were produced and used to image an additively manufactured part made of an Inconel (Nickel 718) alloy. Because inverse Compton scattering driven by laser-plasma acceleration produces high-energy X-rays while maintaining a focal spot size on the order of a micron, the source can provide several benefits over conventional X-ray production methods, particularly when imaging superalloy parts, with the potential to revolutionise what can be inspected.

Abstract

We use an infrared dataset captured between 1984 and 2017 using several instruments and observatories to report five rare equatorial disturbances that completely altered the appearance of Jupiter's Equatorial Zone (EZ): the clearance of tropospheric clouds revealed a new 5-$\mu$m-bright band encircling the planet at the equator, accompanied by large 5-$\mu$m-bright filaments. Three events were observed in ground-based images in 1973, 1979 and 1992. We report and characterize for the first time the entire evolution of two new episodes of this unusual EZ state that presented their maximum 5-$\mu$m-brightness in December 1999 and February 2007, coinciding with a brown coloration south of the equator and with large bluish filaments and white plumes in the northern EZ at visible wavelengths. We characterize their typical infrared-bright lifetimes of 12-18 months, with possible periodicities of 6-8 or 13-14 years. We predict that a full-scale equatorial disturbance could occur in 2019-21.

Abstract

Using images at multiple mid-infrared wavelengths, acquired in May 2018 using the VISIR instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), we study Jupiter's pole-to-pole thermal, chemical and aerosol structure in the troposphere and stratosphere. We confirm that the pattern of cool and cloudy anticyclonic zones and warm cloud-free cyclonic belts persists throughout the mid-latitudes, up to the polar boundaries, and evidence a strong correlation with the vertical maximum windshear and the locations of Jupiter's zonal jets. At high latitudes, VISIR images reveal a large region of mid-infrared cooling poleward $\sim$64$^{\circ}$N and $\sim$67$^{\circ}$S extending from the upper troposphere to the stratosphere, co-located with the reflective aerosols observed by JunoCam, and suggesting that aerosols play a key role in the radiative cooling at the poles. Comparison of zonal-mean thermal properties and high-resolution visible imaging from Juno allows us to study the variability of atmospheric properties as a function of altitude and jet boundaries, particularly in the cold southern polar vortex. However, the southern stratospheric polar vortex is partly masked by a warm mid-infrared signature of the aurora. Co-located with the southern main auroral oval, this warming results from the auroral precipitation and/or joule heating which heat the atmosphere and thus cause a significant stratospheric emission. This high emission results from a large enhancement of both ethane and acetylene in the polar region, reinforcing the evidence of enhanced ion-related chemistry in Jupiter's auroral regions.

Abstract

Spectral observations of Neptune made in 2019 with the MUSE instrument at the Very Large Telescope in Chile have been analysed to determine the spatial variation of aerosol scattering properties and methane abundance in Neptune's atmosphere. The darkening of the South Polar Wave (SPW) at $\sim$ 60$^\circ$S, and dark spots such as the Voyager 2 Great Dark Spot is concluded to be due to a spectrally-dependent darkening ($\lambda < 650$nm) of particles in a deep aerosol layer at $\sim$ 5 bar and presumed to be composed of a mixture of photochemically-generated haze and H$_2$S ice. We also note a regular latitudinal variation of reflectivity at wavelengths of very low methane absorption longer than $\sim$ 650 nm, with bright zones latitudinally separated by $\sim$ 25$^\circ$. This feature, similar to the spectral characteristics of a discrete deep bright spot DBS-2019 found in our data, is found to be consistent with a brightening of the particles in the same $\sim$5-bar aerosol layer at $\lambda > 650 $ nm. We find the properties of an overlying methane/haze aerosol layer at $\sim$ 2 bar are, to first-order, invariant with latitude, while variations in the opacity of an upper tropospheric haze layer reproduce the observed reflectivity at methane-absorbing wavelengths, with higher abundances found at the equator and also in a narrow `zone' at $80^\circ$S. Finally, we find the mean abundance of methane below its condensation level to be 6--7% at the equator reducing to $\sim$3% south of $\sim$25$^\circ$S, although the absolute abundances are model dependent., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

Previous observations of dark vortices in Neptune's atmosphere, such as Voyager-2's Great Dark Spot, have been made in only a few, broad-wavelength channels, which has hampered efforts to pinpoint their pressure level and what makes them dark. Here, we present Very Large Telescope (Chile) MUSE spectrometer observations of Hubble Space Telescope's NDS-2018 dark spot, made in 2019. These medium-resolution 475 - 933 nm reflection spectra allow us to show that dark spots are caused by a darkening at short wavelengths (< 700 nm) of a deep ~5-bar aerosol layer, which we suggest is the H$_2$S condensation layer. A deep bright spot, named DBS-2019, is also visible on the edge of NDS-2018, whose spectral signature is consistent with a brightening of the same 5-bar layer at longer wavelengths (> 700 nm). This bright feature is much deeper than previously studied dark spot companion clouds and may be connected with the circulation that generates and sustains such spots., Comment: 1 table. 3 figures. 8. Long term variability of Jupiter's northern auroral 8-micron CH4 emissions

Abstract

We present a study of the long term variability of Jupiter's mid-infrared auroral CH4 emissions. 7.7 - 7.9 micron images of Jupiter recorded by Earth-based telescopes over the last three decades were collated in order to quantify the magnitude and timescales over which the northern auroral hotspot's CH4 emissions varies. We find that the ratio of the radiance of the poleward northern auroral emissions to a lower-latitude zonal mean, henceforth 'Relative Poleward Radiance' or RPR, exhibits a 37% variability over a range of timescales. We searched for patterns of variability in order to test whether seasonally-varying solar insolation, the 11-year solar cycle, or short-term solar wind variability at Jupiter's magnetopause could explain the observed evolution. The variability of the RPR exhibits a weak (r < 0.2) correlation with the solar insolation received at Jupiter's high-northern latitudes. This rules out the hypothesis suggested in previous work (e.g. Sinclair et al., 2017a) that shortwave solar heating of aurorally-produced haze particles is the dominant heating mechanism in the lower stratosphere. We also find the variability exhibits negligible (r < 0.18) correlation with the monthly-mean sunspot number, which rules out variability associated with the solar cycle. On shorter timescales, we find moderate correlations of the RPR with solar wind conditions at Jupiter in the preceding days before images were recorded. For example, we find correlations of r = 0.45 and r = 0.51 of the RPR with the mean and standard deviation on the solar wind dynamical pressure in the preceding 7 days. The moderate correlation suggests that either: 1) only a subset of solar wind compressions lead to brighter, poleward, CH4 emissions and/or 2) a subset of CH4 emission brightening events are driven by internal magnetospheric and independent of the solar wind.

9. Highly depleted alkali metals in Jupiter's deep atmosphere

Abstract

Water and ammonia vapors are known to be the major sources of spectral absorption at pressure levels observed by the microwave radiometer (MWR) on Juno. However, the brightness temperatures and limb darkening observed by the MWR at its longest wavelength channel of 50 cm (600 MHz) in the first 9 perijove passes indicate the existence of an additional source of opacity in the deep atmosphere of Jupiter (pressures beyond 100 bar). The absorption properties of ammonia and water vapor, and their relative abundances in Jupiter's atmosphere do not provide sufficient opacity in deep atmosphere to explain the 600 MHz channel observation. Here we show that free electrons due to the ionization of alkali metals, i.e. sodium, and potassium, with sub-solar metallicity [M/H] (log based 10 relative concentration to solar) in the range of [M/H] = -2 to [M/H] = -5 can provide the missing source of opacity in the deep atmosphere. If the alkali metals are not the source of additional opacity in the MWR data, then their metallicity at 1000 bars can only be even lower. The upper bound of -2 on the metallicity of the alkali metals contrasts with the other heavy elements -- C, N, S, Ar, Kr, and Xe -- which are all enriched relative to their solar abundances having a metallicity of approximately +0.5., Comment: This manuscript has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Abstract

A fundamental requirement for quantum technologies is the ability to coherently control the interaction between electrons and photons. However, in many scenarios involving the interaction between light and matter, the exchange of linear or angular momentum between electrons and photons is not feasible, a condition known as the dipole-approximation limit. An example of a case beyond this limit that has remained experimentally elusive is when the interplay between chiral electrons and vortex light is considered, where the orbital angular momentum of light can be transferred to electrons. Here, we present a novel mechanism for such an orbital angular momentum transfer from optical vortex beams to electronic quantum Hall states. Specifically, we identify a robust contribution to the radial photocurrent, in an annular graphene sample within the quantum Hall regime, that depends on the vorticity of light. This phenomenon can be interpreted as an optical pumping scheme, where the angular momentum of photons is transferred to electrons, generating a radial current, and the current direction is determined by the vorticity of the light. Our findings offer fundamental insights into the optical probing and manipulation of quantum coherence, with wide-ranging implications for advancing quantum coherent optoelectronics.

Abstract Introduction Treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) has been transformed by novel therapies, including CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs), and proteasome inhibitors (PIs), resulting in increasing numbers of patients who are triple-class exposed (TCE; exposed to ≥ 1 drug in each class). Many patients are penta-exposed (PE; ≥ 2 IMiDs, ≥ 2 PIs, and a CD38 mAb), some are triple-class refractory (TCR), and some are PE and TCR (PE-TCR). Data on real-world outcomes in elderly patients with MM across this spectrum of exposure are limited. Methods Data from the Medicare Chronic Conditions Warehouse Database from November 2006–December 2020 were used to examine cohorts of TCE, TCR, PE, and PE-TCR patients. Outcomes were assessed from the start of the index line of therapy (LOT), defined as the first LOT after becoming TCE or PE. Results A total of 2830 TCE, 1371 TCR, 1121 PE, and 774 PE-TCR patients were identified. Pomalidomide was the most frequently used medication for the index LOT in all cohorts (32.6% [PE-TCR] to 43.3% [TCR]). The most frequently used regimens for the index LOT were pomalidomide plus daratumumab for TCE (17.2%) and PE (7.0%), pomalidomide plus carfilzomib for TCR (10.3%), and pomalidomide plus elotuzumab for PE-TCR (7.4%). Median time to discontinuation (TTD) ranged from 4.2 (PE-TCR) to 6.9 (TCE) months, and overall survival (OS) ranged from 13.0 (TCR) to 15.9 (PE) months. Healthcare resource utilization (HRU) was lowest for TCE and highest for PE-TCR patients. Mean monthly healthcare costs (HCC) ranged from $23,091 (TCE) to $24,412 (PE-TCR). MM medications represented 66.2% (PE-TCR) to 72.8% (TCE) of costs. Conclusions In this study across a spectrum of Medicare TCE patients, there was heterogeneity in treatment regimens, suggesting no standard of care. TTD and OS were short, and HRU and HCC were high. These results underscore the potential for new therapies in this population.

13. Secreted in Xylem 6 (SIX6) Mediates Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae Race 1 Avirulence on FW1-Resistant Strawberry Cultivars

Abstract

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof) race 1 is avirulent on cultivars with the dominant resistance gene FW1, while Fof race 2 is virulent on FW1-resistant cultivars. We hypothesized there was a gene-for-gene interaction between a gene at the FW1 locus and an avirulence gene (AvrFW1) in Fof race 1. To identify a candidate AvrFW1, we compared genomes of 24 Fof race 1 and three Fof race 2 isolates. We found one candidate gene that was present in race 1, was absent in race 2, was highly expressed in planta, and was homologous to a known effector, secreted in xylem 6 (SIX6). We knocked out SIX6 in two Fof race 1 isolates by homologous recombination. All SIX6 knockout transformants (ΔSIX6) gained virulence on FW1/fw1 cultivars, whereas ectopic transformants and the wildtype isolates remained avirulent. ΔSIX6 isolates were quantitatively less virulent on FW1/fw1 cultivars Fronteras and San Andreas than fw1/fw1 cultivars. Seedlings from an FW1/fw1 × fw1/fw1 population were genotyped for FW1 and tested for susceptibility to a SIX6 knockout isolate. Results suggested that additional minor-effect quantitative resistance genes could be present at the FW1 locus. This work demonstrates that SIX6 acts as an avirulence factor interacting with a resistance gene at the FW1 locus. The identification of AvrFW1 enables surveillance for Fof race 2 and provides insight into the mechanisms of FW1-mediated resistance. [Graphic: see text] Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). 14. A high spatial and spectral resolution study of Jupiter's mid-infrared auroral emissions and their response to a solar wind compression

Abstract

We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of Jupiter's mid-to-high latitudes using Gemini-North/TEXES (Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph) on March 17-19, 2017. These observations capture Jupiter's hydrocarbon auroral emissions before, during and after the arrival of a solar wind compression on March 18th, which highlights the coupling between the polar stratosphere and external space environment. In comparing observations on March 17th and 19th, we observe a brightening of the CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2$ and C$_2$H$_4$ emissions in regions spatially coincident with the northern, duskside main auroral emission (henceforth, MAE). In inverting the spectra to derive atmospheric information, we determine that the duskside brightening results from an upper stratospheric (p < 0.1 mbar/z > 200 km) heating (e.g. $\Delta T$ = 9.1 $\pm$ 2.1 K at 9 $\mu$bar at 67.5$^\circ$N, 162.5$^\circ$W) with negligible heating at deeper pressures. Our interpretation is that the arrival of the solar wind enhancement drove magnetospheric dynamics through compression and/or viscous interactions on the flank. These dynamics accelerated currents and/or generated higher Poynting fluxes, which ultimately warmed the atmosphere through Joule heating and ion-neutral collisions. Poleward of the southern MAE, temperature retrievals demonstrate that auroral-related heating penetrates as deep as the 10-mbar level, in contrast to poleward of the northern MAE, where heating is only observed as deep as $\sim$3 mbar. We suggest this results from the south having higher Pedersen conductivities, and therefore stronger currents and acceleration of the neutrals, as well as the poleward heating overlapping with the apex of Jupiter's circulation thereby inhibiting efficient horizontal mixing/advection.

17. A retrospective analysis of mid-infrared observations of the Comet D/Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Wesley impacts on Jupiter

Abstract

We present a retrospective analysis of Earth-based mid-infrared observations of Jupiter capturing the aftermath of the impacts by Comet D/Shoemaker-Levy 9 (henceforth SL9) in July 1994 and the Wesley impactor in July 2009. While the atmospheric effects of both impacts have been reported previously, we were motivated to re-examine both events using consistent methods to enable robust, quantitative comparisons. We analyzed spectrophotometry and spectroscopy capturing both impacts using two independent analyses: 1) a least-squares search over a grid of candidate mineral species to determine the composition of impact residue and 2) a radiative transfer analysis to derive atmospheric information. We observe that the SL9 impact sites are enhanced in stratospheric CH4 emissions at 7.9 um, due to shock heating and adiabatic compression from plume re-entry, and from 8.5 - 11.5 um due to stratospheric NH3 emission and non-gaseous cometary material. We derive NH3 concentrations of 5.7 ppmv at 30 mbar. In new findings, we find that the SL9 impact sites also exhibit a non-gaseous emission feature at 18 - 19 um. The non-gaseous emission at 8.5 - 11.5 and 18 - 19 um emission is best reproduced by predominantly amorphous olivine and obsidian at similar abundances. The Wesley impact site exhibits enhanced emissions from 8.8 - 11.5 and 18 - 19 um. We found this could be reproduced by predominantly amorphous olivine and stratospheric NH3 at concentrations of 150 ppbv at 30 mbar. Stratospheric NH3 abundances are a factor of 40 higher in the SL9 impacts compared to the Wesley impact, which confirms the former reached deeper, NH3-richer altitudes of the atmosphere. The absence of silicas in the Wesley impact would place an upper limit of 10 km/s on the incident velocity and 9 degree on the entry angle of the impactor such that temperatures were insufficient to convert silicates.

Abstract

Abstract Wilms tumor (WT) is the most common renal malignancy of childhood. Despite improvements in the overall survival, relapse occurs in ~15% of patients with favorable histology WT (FHWT). Half of these patients will succumb to their disease. Identifying novel targeted therapies remains challenging in part due to the lack of faithful preclinical in vitro models. Here we establish twelve patient-derived WT cell lines and demonstrate that these models faithfully recapitulate WT biology using genomic and transcriptomic techniques. We then perform loss-of-function screens to identify the nuclear export gene, XPO1, as a vulnerability. We find that the FDA approved XPO1 inhibitor, KPT-330, suppresses TRIP13 expression, which is required for survival. We further identify synergy between KPT-330 and doxorubicin, a chemotherapy used in high-risk FHWT. Taken together, we identify XPO1 inhibition with KPT-330 as a potential therapeutic option to treat FHWTs and in combination with doxorubicin, leads to durable remissions in vivo.

19. Genetic gains underpinning a little-known strawberry Green Revolution

Abstract

Abstract The annual production of strawberry has increased by one million tonnes in the US and 8.4 million tonnes worldwide since 1960. Here we show that the US expansion was driven by genetic gains from Green Revolution breeding and production advances that increased yields by 2,755%. Using a California population with a century-long breeding history and phenotypes of hybrids observed in coastal California environments, we estimate that breeding has increased fruit yields by 2,974-6,636%, counts by 1,454-3,940%, weights by 228-504%, and firmness by 239-769%. Using genomic prediction approaches, we pinpoint the origin of the Green Revolution to the early 1950s and uncover significant increases in additive genetic variation caused by transgressive segregation and phenotypic diversification. Lastly, we show that the most consequential Green Revolution breeding breakthrough was the introduction of photoperiod-insensitive, PERPETUAL FLOWERING hybrids in the 1970s that doubled yields and drove the dramatic expansion of strawberry production in California.

Abstract

The development of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier) cultivars resistant to Phytophthora crown rot (PhCR), a devastating disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora cactorum (Lebert & Cohn) J. Schröt., has been challenging partly because the resistance phenotypes are quantitative and only moderately heritable. To develop deeper insights into the genetics of resistance and build the foundation for applying genomic selection, a genetically diverse training population was screened for resistance to California isolates of the pathogen. Here we show that genetic gains in breeding for resistance to PhCR have been negligible (3% of the cultivars tested were highly resistant and none surpassed early 20th century cultivars). Narrow-sense genomic heritability for PhCR resistance ranged from 0.41 to 0.75 among training population individuals. Using multivariate genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we identified a large-effect locus (predicted to be RPc2) that explained 43.6-51.6% of the genetic variance, was necessary but not sufficient for resistance, and was associated with calcium channel and other candidate genes with known plant defense functions. The addition of underutilized gene bank resources to our training population doubled additive genetic variance, increased the accuracy of genomic selection, and enabled the discovery of individuals carrying favorable alleles that are either rare or not present in modern cultivars. The incorporation of an RPc2-associated single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as a fixed effect increased genomic prediction accuracy from 0.40 to 0.55. Finally, we show that parent selection using genomic-estimated breeding values, genetic variances, and cross usefulness holds promise for enhancing resistance to PhCR in strawberry.

Abstract

A multi-decade record of ground-based mid-infrared (7-25 $\mu$m) images of Saturn is used to explore seasonal and non-seasonal variability in thermal emission over more than a Saturnian year (1984-2022). Thermal emission measured by 3-m and 8-m-class observatories compares favourably with synthetic images based on both Cassini-derived temperature records and the predictions of radiative climate models. 8-m class facilities are capable of resolving thermal contrasts on the scale of Saturn's belts, zones, polar hexagon, and polar cyclones, superimposed onto large-scale seasonal asymmetries. Seasonal changes in brightness temperatures of $\sim30$ K in the stratosphere and $\sim10$ K in the upper troposphere are observed, as the northern and southern polar stratospheric vortices (NPSV and SPSV) form in spring and dissipate in autumn. The timings of the first appearance of the warm polar vortices is successfully reproduced by radiative climate models, confirming them to be radiative phenomena, albeit entrained within sharp boundaries influenced by dynamics. Axisymmetric thermal bands (4-5 per hemisphere) display temperature gradients that are strongly correlated with Saturn's zonal winds, indicating winds that decay in strength with altitude, and implying meridional circulation cells forming the system of cool zones and warm belts. Saturn's thermal structure is largely repeatable from year to year (via comparison of infrared images in 1989 and 2018), with the exception of low-latitudes. Here we find evidence of inter-annual variations because the equatorial banding at 7.9 $\mu$m is inconsistent with a $\sim15$-year period for Saturn's equatorial stratospheric oscillation, i.e., it is not strictly semi-annual. Finally, observations between 2017-2022 extend the legacy of the Cassini mission, revealing the continued warming of the NPSV during northern summer. Abstract

An essential component of planetary climatology is knowledge of the tropospheric temperature field and its variability. Previous studies of Jupiter hinted at periodic behavior that was non-seasonal, as well as dynamical relationships between tropospheric and stratospheric temperatures. However, these observations were made over time frames shorter than Jupiter's orbit or they used sparse sampling. We derived upper-tropospheric (300-mbar) temperatures over 40 years, extending those studies to cover several orbits of Jupiter, revealing unexpected results. Periodicities of 4, 7 8-9 and 10-14 years were discovered that involved different latitude bands and seem disconnected from seasonal changes in solar heating. Anti-correlations of variability in opposite hemispheres were particularly striking at 16, 22 and 30 degrees from the equator. Equatorial temperature variations are also anticorrelated with those 60-70 km above. Such behavior suggests a top-down control of equatorial tropospheric temperatures from stratospheric dynamics. Abstract

We report results of Hubble Space Telescope observations from Ganymede's orbitally trailing side which were taken around the flyby of the Juno spacecraft on June 7, 2021. We find that Ganymede's northern and southern auroral ovals alternate in brightness such that the oval facing Jupiter's magnetospheric plasma sheet is brighter than the other one. This suggests that the generator that powers Ganymede's aurora is the momentum of the Jovian plasma sheet north and south of Ganymede's magnetosphere. Magnetic coupling of Ganymede to the plasma sheet above and below the moon causes asymmetric magnetic stresses and electromagnetic energy fluxes ultimately powering the auroral acceleration process. No clear statistically significant time variability of the auroral emission on short time scales of 100s could be resolved. We show that electron energy fluxes of several tens of mW m$^{-2}$ are required for its OI 1356 \AA$\;$ emission making Ganymede a very poor auroral emitter., Comment: Accepted for publication with Geophys. 25. Jupiter's Temperature Structure: A Reassessment of the Voyager Radio Occultation Measurements

Abstract

The thermal structure of planetary atmospheres is an essential input for predicting and retrieving the distribution of gases and aerosols, as well as the bulk chemical abundances. In the case of Jupiter, the temperature at a reference level - generally taken at 1 bar - serves as the anchor in models used to derive the planet's interior structure and composition. Most models assume the temperature measured by the Galileo probe (Seiff et al. 1998). However, those data correspond to a single location, an unusually clear, dry region, affected by local atmospheric dynamics. On the other hand, the Voyager radio occultation observations cover a wider range of latitudes, longitudes, and times (Lindal et al. 1981). The Voyager retrievals were based on atmospheric composition and radio refractivity data that require updating and were never properly tabulated: the few existing tabulations are incomplete and ambiguous. Here, we present a systematic electronic digitization of all available temperature profiles from Voyager, followed by their reanalysis, employing currently accepted values of the abundances and radio refractivities of atmospheric species. We find the corrected temperature at the 1 bar level to be up to 4 K greater than previously published values, i.e., 170.3{\pm}3.8 K at 12{\deg}S (Voyager 1 ingress) and 167.3{\pm}3.8 K at 0{\deg}N (Voyager 1 egress). This is to be compared with the Galileo probe value of 166.1{\pm}0.8 K at the edge of an unusual feature at 6.57{\deg}N. Altogether, this suggests that Jupiter's tropospheric temperatures may vary spatially by up to 7 K between 7{\deg}N and 12{\deg}S., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

27. Microbiota restoration therapies for recurrent infection reach an important new milestone

Microbiota restoration therapy has become a standard treatment for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). In this article, we review the studies supporting the licensure of two live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) designed to prevent rCDI and to provide clinicians with a perspective on their differences. PubMed was reviewed on 1 October 2023, for all papers published concerning the current Food and Drug Administration allowance of the use of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and the studies that led to the licensure of RBX2660 (REBYOTA™), generic name, fecal microbiota, live-jslm, and SER-109 (VOWST™), generic name, fecal microbiota spores, live-brpk. OpenBiome continues to produce fecal products for patients with rCDI at their treatment sites, and the American Gastroenterology Association has a National Registry focused on long-term safety of administering fecal microbiota products. The science behind the licensing of fecal microbiota, live-jslm, a consortium of fecal anaerobes found in stool augmented with strains of Bacteroidetes and fecal microbiota spores, live-brpk, a mixture of 50 species of purified Firmicutes spores is reviewed. Both products appear to be safe in clinical trials and effective in reducing rCDI episodes by mechanisms established for FMT, including normalization of α- and β-diversity of the microbiome and by increasing fecal secondary bile acids. The different makeup of the two LBPs suggests that rCDI responds to a variety of engrafting microbiota which explains why nearly all donors in FMT of rCDI are generally effective. Fecal microbiota, live-jslm has also been shown to successfully treat rCDI in elderly patients with advanced comorbidities. With the licensure of two novel LBPs, we are entering a new phase of microbiota replacement therapy. Having standardized manufacturing and proper monitoring of products, harnessing the microbiome to control and prevent disease has a new beginning.

29. Accelerating genetic gains for quantitative resistance to verticillium wilt through predictive breeding in strawberry

Abstract

Abstract Verticillium wilt (VW), a devastating vascular wilt disease of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), has caused economic losses for nearly a century. This disease is caused by the soil‐borne pathogen Verticillium dahliae, which occurs nearly worldwide and causes disease in numerous agriculturally important plants. The development of VW‐resistant cultivars is critically important for the sustainability of strawberry production. We previously showed that a preponderance of the genetic resources (asexually propagated hybrid individuals) preserved in public germplasm collections were moderately to highly susceptible and that genetic gains for increased resistance to VW have been negligible over the last 60 years. To more fully understand the challenges associated with breeding for increased quantitative resistance to this pathogen, we developed and phenotyped a training population of hybrids (n=564) among elite parents with a wide range of resistance phenotypes. When these data were combined with training data from a population of elite and exotic hybrids (n=386), genomic prediction accuracies of 0.47–0.48 were achieved and were predicted to explain 70%–75% of the additive genetic variance for resistance. We concluded that breeding values for resistance to VW can be predicted with sufficient accuracy for effective genomic selection with routine updating of training populations.

30. An Interval Throwing Program for Baseball Pitchers Based upon Workload Data

Abstract

# Background Interval throwing programs (ITP) have been used for decades to enable baseball pitchers to return to competition after injury or surgery by gradually applying load to the throwing arm. Past programs have been based on personal experience; however, advances in our understanding of the biomechanics and workloads of throwing allow for a more modern data-based program to be developed. # Hypothesis/Purpose To 1) develop a updated ITP for rehabilitation of modern baseball pitchers based upon biomechanical and throwing workload data, and 2) compare the updated program with a past program to determine differences in chronic workload and acute:chronic workload ratios (ACWR). # Study Design Cross-sectional study # Methods Workloads (i.e. daily, acute, chronic, and ACWR) for the original ITP were built from the prescribed throwing schedule. Elbow varus torque per throw was calculated based upon a relationship between elbow varus torque and throwing distance. Throw counts, daily/chronic/acute workloads, and ACWR were calculated and plotted over time. A new ITP was built to model current pitcher's throwing schedules and gradually increased ACWR over time. # Results The original ITP had a throwing schedule of 136 days, final chronic workload 15.0, and the ACWR above or below the "safe" range (i.e. 0.7 -- 1.3) for 18% of the program with a peak of 1.61. The updated ITP was built to consist of a 217-day schedule, final chronic workload of 10.8, and deviated from the safe range for 9% of the program, with a peak of 1.33. # Conclusion The newly created ITP is more familiar to modern baseball pitchers while exhibiting a more gradual buildup of chronic workload than traditional ITP programs. This ITP may be used to return baseball pitchers back to competition as safely and efficiently as possible, and potentially with less risk of setbacks or reinjury. The ITP may be used following common injuries or surgeries to the throwing shoulder and elbow, such as Tommy John surgery, while also serving as a basis for future development of shorter duration ITPs. # Level of Evidence 2c

Abstract

We present a reanalysis (using the Minnaert limb-darkening approximation) of visible/near-infrared (0.3 - 2.5 micron) observations of Uranus and Neptune made by several instruments. We find a common model of the vertical aerosol distribution that is consistent with the observed reflectivity spectra of both planets, consisting of: 1) a deep aerosol layer with a base pressure > 5-7 bar, assumed to be composed of a mixture of H2S ice and photochemical haze; 2) a layer of photochemical haze/ice, coincident with a layer of high static stability at the methane condensation level at 1-2 bar; and 3) an extended layer of photochemical haze, likely mostly of the same composition as the 1-2-bar layer, extending from this level up through to the stratosphere, where the photochemical haze particles are thought to be produced. For Neptune, we find that we also need to add a thin layer of micron-sized methane ice particles at ~0.2 bar to explain the enhanced reflection at longer methane-absorbing wavelengths. We suggest that methane condensing onto the haze particles at the base of the 1-2-bar aerosol layer forms ice/haze particles that grow very quickly to large size and immediately 'snow out' (as predicted by Carlson et al. 1988), re-evaporating at deeper levels to release their core haze particles to act as condensation nuclei for H2S ice formation. In addition, we find that the spectral characteristics of 'dark spots', such as the Voyager-2/ISS Great Dark Spot and the HST/WFC3 NDS-2018, are well modelled by a darkening or possibly clearing of the deep aerosol layer only., Comment: 58 pages, 23 figures, 4 tables

We previously identified a dominant gene (FW1) on chromosome 2B that confers resistance to race 1 of the pathogen, and hypothesized that gene-for-gene resistance to Fusarium wilt was widespread in strawberry. To explore this, a genetically diverse collection of heirloom and modern cultivars and octoploid ecotypes were screened for resistance to Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2. Here, we show that resistance to both races is widespread in natural and domesticated populations and that resistance to race 1 is conferred by partially to completely dominant alleles among loci (FW1, FW2, FW3, FW4, and FW5) found on three non-homoeologous chromosomes (1A, 2B, and 6B). The underlying genes have not yet been cloned and functionally characterized; however, plausible candidates were identified that encode pattern recognition receptors or other proteins known to confer gene-for-gene resistance in plants. High-throughput genotyping assays for SNPs in linkage disequilibrium with FW1-FW5 were developed to facilitate marker-assisted selection and accelerate the development of race 1 resistant cultivars. This study laid the foundation for identifying the genes encoded by FW1-FW5, in addition to exploring the genetics of resistance to race 2 and other races of the pathogen, as a precaution to averting a Fusarium wilt pandemic.

Abstract

We present an analysis of all currently available ground-based imaging of Neptune in the mid-infrared. Dating between 2003 and 2020, the images reveal changes in Neptune's mid-infrared ($\sim 8-25\mu$m) emission over time in the years surrounding Neptune's 2005 southern summer solstice. Images sensitive to stratospheric ethane ($\sim12\mu$m), methane ($\sim8\mu$m), and CH$_3$D ($\sim9\mu$m) display significant sub-seasonal temporal variation on regional and global scales. Comparison with H$_2$ S(1) hydrogen-quadrupole ($\sim17.035\mu$m) spectra suggests these changes are primarily related to stratospheric temperature changes. The stratosphere appears to have cooled between 2003 and 2009 across multiple filtered wavelengths, followed by a dramatic warming of the south pole between 2018 and 2020. Conversely, upper-tropospheric temperatures -- inferred from $\sim 17-25$-micron imaging -- appear invariant during this period, except for the south pole, which appeared warmest between 2003 and 2006. We discuss the observed variability in the context of seasonal forcing, tropospheric meteorology, and the solar cycle. Abstract

Jupiter's atmosphere is dominated by multiple jet streams which are strongly tied to its 3D atmospheric circulation. Lacking a rigid bottom boundary, several models exist for how the meridional circulation extends into the planetary interior. Here we show, collecting evidence from multiple instruments of the Juno mission, the existence of mid-latitudinal meridional circulation cells which are driven by turbulence, similar to the Ferrel cells on Earth. Different than Earth, which contains only one such cell in each hemisphere, the larger, faster rotating Jupiter can incorporate multiple cells. The cells form regions of upwelling and downwelling, which we show are clearly evident in Juno's microwave data between latitude 60S and 60N. The existence of these cells is confirmed by reproducing the ammonia observations using a simplistic model. This study solves a long-standing puzzle regarding the nature of Jupiter's sub-cloud dynamics and provides evidence for 8 cells in each Jovian hemisphere., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, Supporting information. Abstract

The abundance of deuterium in giant planet atmospheres provides constraints on the reservoirs of ices incorporated into these worlds during their formation and evolution. Motivated by discrepancies in the measured deuterium-hydrogen ratio (D/H) on Jupiter and Saturn, we present a new measurement of the D/H ratio in methane for Saturn from ground-based measurements. We analysed a spectral cube (covering 1151-1160 cm$^{-1}$ from 6 February 2013) from the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) where emission lines from both methane and deuterated methane are well resolved. Our estimate of the D/H ratio in stratospheric methane, $1.65_{-0.21}^{+0.27} \times 10^{-5}$ is in agreement with results derived from Cassini CIRS and ISO/SWS observations, confirming the unexpectedly low CH$_{3}$D abundance. Assuming a fractionation factor of $1.34 \pm 0.19$ we derive a hydrogen D/H of $1.23_{-0.23}^{+0.27} \times 10^{-5}$. This value remains lower than previous tropospheric hydrogen D/H measurements of (i) Saturn $2.10 (\pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$, (ii) Jupiter $2.6 (\pm 0.7) \times 10^{-5}$ and (iii) the proto-solar hydrogen D/H of $2.1 (\pm 0.5) \times 10^{-5}$, suggesting that the fractionation factor may not be appropriate for stratospheric methane, or that the D/H ratio in Saturn's stratosphere is not representative of the bulk of the planet., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract

# Background In the rehabilitation of injured baseball pitchers, there is lack of consensus on how to guide a player back to pitching. It is unknown how different contemporary interval throwing programs (ITPs) progress in the amount of throwing workload. # Purposes To 1) evaluate three prominent ITPs commonly employed in baseball pitcher rehabilitation and assess whether these ITPs produce training loads that increase in a controlled, graduated manner and 2) devise an ITP that produced training loads which increased steadily over time. # Study Design Cross-sectional study # Methods Three publicly available ITPs from prominent sports medicine institutions were analyzed. Elbow varus torque per throw was calculated from a 2^nd^ order polynomial regression based upon a relationship between recorded torque measurements and throwing distance measured from a database of 111,196 throws. The relative rate of workload increase was measured as an acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR). For each ITP, throw counts, daily/acute/chronic workloads, and ACWR were calculated and plotted over time. Finally, an original ITP was devised based upon a computational model that gradually increases ACWR over time and finished with an optimal chronic workload. # Results Each ITP exhibited a unique progression of throwing distances, quantities, and days to create different workload profiles. The three ITPs had throwing schedules ranging from 136 days to 187 days, ACWR spiked above or fell below a literature-defined "safe" range (i.e. 0.7 -- 1.3) 19, 21, and 23 times. A novel ITP, predicated on a 146-day schedule and with a final chronic workload of 14.2, was designed to have no spikes outside of the safe range. # Conclusion Existing ITPs widely utilized for rehabilitation of baseball pitchers exhibit significantly inconsistent variation in the rate of throwing load progression. Computational modeling may facilitate more incremental workload progression in ITPs, thereby reducing injury during rehabilitation and more efficiently condition a pitcher for return to competition. # Level of Evidence 3b

Abstract

Gray mold, a disease of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) caused by the ubiquitous necrotroph Botrytis cinerea, renders fruit unmarketable and causes economic losses in the postharvest supply chain. To explore the feasibility of selecting for increased resistance to gray mold, we undertook genetic and genomic prediction studies in strawberry populations segregating for fruit quality and shelf life traits hypothesized to pleiotropically affect susceptibility. As predicted, resistance to gray mold was heritable but quantitative and genetically complex. While every individual was susceptible, the speed of symptom progression and severity differed. Narrow-sense heritability ranged from 0.38 to 0.71 for lesion diameter (LD) and 0.39 to 0.44 for speed of emergence of external mycelium (EM). Even though significant additive genetic variation was observed for LD and EM, the phenotypic ranges were comparatively narrow and genome-wide analyses did not identify any large-effect loci. Genomic selection (GS) accuracy ranged from 0.28 to 0.59 for LD and 0.37 to 0.47 for EM. Additive genetic correlations between fruit quality and gray mold resistance traits were consistent with prevailing hypotheses: LD decreased as titratable acidity increased, whereas EM increased as soluble solid content decreased and firmness increased. We concluded that phenotypic and GS could be effective for reducing LD and increasing EM, especially in long shelf life populations, but that a significant fraction of the genetic variation for resistance to gray mold was caused by the pleiotropic effects of fruit quality traits that differ among market and shelf life classes.

Abstract

NASA's Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) acquired mid-infrared (5-37 microns) disc-averaged spectra of Uranus very near to its equinox in December 2007. A mean spectrum was constructed from observations of multiple central meridian longitudes, spaced equally around the planet, which has provided the opportunity for the most comprehensive globally-averaged characterisation of Uranus' temperature and composition ever obtained (Orton et al., 2014 a [arXiv:1407.2120], b [arXiv:1407.2118]). In this work we analyse the disc-averaged spectra at four separate central meridian longitudes to reveal significant longitudinal variability in thermal emission occurring in Uranus' stratosphere during the 2007 equinox. We detect a variability of up to 15% at wavelengths sensitive to stratospheric methane, ethane and acetylene at the ~0.1-mbar level. The tropospheric hydrogen-helium continuum and deuterated methane absorption exhibit a negligible variation (less than 2%), constraining the phenomenon to the stratosphere. Building on the forward-modelling analysis of the global average study, we present full optimal estimation inversions (using the NEMESIS retrieval algorithm, Irwin et al., 2008 [10.1016/j.jqsrt.2007.11.006]) of the Uranus-2007 spectra at each longitude to distinguish between thermal and compositional variability. We found that the variations can be explained by a temperature change of less than 3 K in the stratosphere. Abstract Genomic prediction in breeding populations containing hundreds to thousands of parents and seedlings is prohibitively expensive with current high‐density genetic marker platforms designed for strawberry. We developed mid‐density panels of molecular inversion probes (MIPs) to be deployed with the “DArTag” marker platform to provide a low‐cost, high‐throughput genotyping solution for strawberry genomic prediction. In total, 7742 target single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) regions were used to generate MIP assays that were tested with a screening panel of 376 octoploid Fragaria accessions. We evaluated the performance of DArTag assays based on genotype segregation, amplicon coverage, and their ability to produce subgenome‐specific amplicon alignments to the FaRR1 assembly and subsequent alignment‐based variant calls with strong concordance to DArT's alignment‐free, count‐based genotype reports. We used a combination of marker performance metrics and physical distribution in the FaRR1 assembly to select 3K and 5K production panels for genotyping of large strawberry populations. We show that the 3K and 5K DArTag panels are able to target and amplify homologous alleles within subgenomic sequences with low‐amplification bias between reference and alternate alleles, supporting accurate genotype calling while producing marker genotypes that can be treated as functionally diploid for quantitative genetic analysis. The 3K and 5K target SNPs show high levels of polymorphism in diverse F. × ananassa germplasm and UC Davis cultivars, with mean pairwise diversity (π) estimates of 0.40 and 0.32 and mean heterozygous genotype frequencies of 0.35 and 0.33, respectively.

Abstract

Background Mutations to the co‐chaperone protein BAG3 (B‐cell lymphoma‐2–associated athanogene‐3) are a leading cause of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). These mutations often impact the C‐terminal BAG domain (residues 420–499), which regulates heat shock protein 70‐dependent protein turnover via autophagy. While mutations in other regions are less common, previous studies in patients with DCM found that co‐occurrence of 2 BAG3 variants (P63A, P380S) led to worse prognosis. However, the underlying mechanism for dysfunction is not fully understood. Methods and Results In this study, we used proteomics, Western blots, and myofilament functional assays on left ventricular tissue from patients with nonfailing, DCM, and DCM with BAG363/380 to determine how these mutations impact protein quality control and cardiomyocyte contractile function. We found dysregulated autophagy and increased protein ubiquitination in patients with BAG363/380 compared with nonfailing and DCM, suggesting impaired protein turnover. Expression and myofilament localization of BAG3‐binding proteins were also uniquely altered in the BAG3,63/380 including abolished localization of the small heat shock protein CRYAB (alpha‐crystallin B chain) to the sarcomere. To determine whether these variants impacted sarcomere function, we used cardiomyocyte force‐calcium assays and found reduced maximal calcium‐activated force in DCM and BAG363/380. Interestingly, myofilament calcium sensitivity was increased in DCM but not with BAG363/380, which was not explained by differences in troponin I phosphorylation. Conclusions Together, our data support that the disease‐enhancing mechanism for BAG3 variants outside of the BAG domain is through disrupted protein turnover leading to compromised sarcomere function. These findings suggest a shared mechanism of disease among pathogenic BAG3 variants, regardless of location.

Abstract

The coastal areas face imminent threats from rising sea levels, which are further exacerbated by storm surges, leading to the relocation of communities. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the potential hazards posed by sea level rise in Balanga City, Bataan, Philippines. A physical vulnerability index was developed considering factors such as geomorphology, elevation, and projected sea level rise. The socioeconomic vulnerability index assessed variables such as household density, education, household monthly income, and housing materials. The study employed Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Fuzzy Logic, and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate socioeconomic, physical, and total vulnerability indices. The study used World Bank Group's projected sea level rise data for different scenarios, surveyed 321 households, obtained elevation data from the University of the Philippines-LiPad's Digital Terrain Model, and classified the area's geomorphology with Landsat 8-9 OLI/TIRS imagery. The PVI analysis indicated that in barangay Tortugas, around 20 % had very high vulnerability, and 19.9 % had very low vulnerability. In Puerto Rivas Ibaba, about 22 % displayed very high vulnerability, and approximately 34 % were classified as very low vulnerability. For SVI, Tortugas had roughly 20 % very high vulnerability and 20 % very low vulnerability. Puerto Rivas Ibaba showed about 20 % very high vulnerability and 19.9 % very low vulnerability. Regarding TVI, Tortugas had 20 % very high vulnerability and 19.9 % very low vulnerability, while Puerto Rivas Ibaba had 20 % very high vulnerability and 20% very low vulnerability. The analysis revealed varying levels of vulnerability in the barangays of Tortugas and Puerto Rivas Ibaba, ranging from very high vulnerability to very low vulnerability. This research serves as a valuable resource for informing and reforming future strategies and policies aimed at mitigating the impacts of sea level rise and safeguarding vulnerable coastal communities.

Abstract

The Philippines, located in the western Pacific region, ranked first on the list of global disaster hotpots out of 192 countries in the World Risk Index Report in 2022. The Philippines was also identified as one of the most vulnerable to disasters caused by extreme natural events that include storms and flooding. Digitalization and emerging technologies that enable advanced warning and create responsive systems are the tools to prepare affected communities for natural events. This project develops an advanced system that enhances community preparedness and aids decision-making during extreme weather conditions like heavy rainfall, gusty winds, flooding, and extreme heat. The system can sense several parameters that include wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, precipitation, solar irradiance, ultraviolet rays’ intensity, and flood water level. The sensing components transmit the readings to an attached microprocessor board that translates and sends the data to the cloud for storage, processing, and analysis. The processed data are fed into a web application that is built to disseminate precise weather information to the community and to the authorities to help them make informed decisions during hazardous weather conditions. The project employs three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing, and standardized testing of system components for prototyping. The operation of each component of the weather and hydrologic monitoring system was validated through comparison with calibrated weather parameter measuring devices. Results reveal that the developed system provides weather data with an accuracy of 98.54 % to 99.71 % against calibrated weather parameter measuring devices. The monitoring system is also designed to accommodate artificial intelligence to enable precise localized weather forecasting.

This study seeks to address this gap by employing empirical formulas to estimate parameters relevant to characterizing and predicting solar energy output from rooftop installation sites. More specifically, this study aims to cite potential solar energy installation areas on the main campus of Bataan Peninsula State University. Using pre-processed Himawari-8 satellite data and Digital Surface Model, the total Potential PV Output of the University roof was calculated.
