7. Sea lions could use multilateration localization for object tracking as tested with bio-inspired whisker arrays

Abstract

Previous behavioural research on live sea lions has shown that they are able to detect the direction of oncoming vortices, even when impacting contralaterally.These experiments showed that the whisker system and the animal's neural processing is seemingly able to detect the Direction of Arrival (DoA) from just one side of the heads vibrissal pads. Therefore, temporal differences between whisker stimulation is a likely method for determining the angle. Herein, a theoretical model is presented based on multilateration, and tested by experimental studies on a 2D array of bio-inspired whiskers with regular spacing, and a 3D array of bio-inspired whiskers on a model head of a sea lion, as used in our previous studies. The results show that arrays of whiskers can in principle work as antennae to determine the DoA.This detection of the DoA is achieved by cross-correlation of triplets of whiskers, and Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA) based multilateration, a method similar to signal processing in modern communication systems and other source localization applications. The results on the 2D array are conclusive and clearly support the hypothesis, while increased uncertainties were found for the 3D array, which could be explained by structural shortcomings of the experimental model. Possible ways to improve the signal are discussed.

Abstract

Combustion stability remains a technical issue in some solid rocket motor development programs because techniques to characterize propellant and motor during a development program either do not exist or are inadequate. Moreover, the situation will remain uncertain until one or more stability related diagnostics that are routine, inexpensive, introduce no risk, and 'industrial strength' are qualified and accepted by the Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial customers. This paper describes an empirical diagnostic technique--passive motor diagnostics--with this potential and illustrates some of its characteristics. This methodology will provide customers with a level of confidence, after early development firing, that does not exist today.

Abstract

Passive motor stability diagnostics require high s/n measurements of low level (60 to 80 db below mean pressure) oscillatory pressures in environments with large and varying DC pressures. Three approaches are briefly examined relative to passive diagnostic demands. Although the high pass filter approach has been demonstrated by Hessler, the 'short time constant' approach is recommended because it enables the use of sensitive p-ducers (resolutions approx. 10(exp -4) psi). Pieso-electric transducers are described and a methodology for using high sensitivity designs for passive diagnostics measurements is presented.

Abstract

There is a lack of published literature on paediatric lung transplant analgesic regimes post-operatively. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to provide literature to help inform future analgesic guidelines. The Alfred Hospital is the single national centre for paediatric lung transplantation. With an increasing prevalence of thoracic transplants per year, there is a need to optimize analgesic regimes to aid post-operative recovery. Epidural analgesia provides a unique method of delivering titratable analgesia with relative low risk. All paediatric patients undergoing lung transplantation (2005-2021) at our tertiary hospital were identified. Data variables including indication for surgery, age, operation performed, Cardiopulmonary Bypass required, daily perioperative analgesia delivery, day 5 oral morphine equivalent (OME) requirement, total OME requirement, ICU and ventilatory outcomes, opioid/epidural/ketamine/general harm were all assessed as per CTCAE, pain outcomes, pain and opioids on discharge. Descriptive statistics were recorded. Average between groups were analyzed using a parametric unpaired t test with p values determined. A total of 44 patients met our inclusion criteria. 37/44 (84%) patients required epidural analgesia. Patients with epidurals post pulmonary transplantation required, on average, half (57%) less opioids post operatively in comparison to patients without epidurals (1.56 vs 3.63, unpaired t test, p < 0.005). Additionally, patients with an epidural required on average 70% less days intubated (3.84 vs 12.86, unpaired t test, p < 0.001). Patients with an epidural require on average 33% less days in hospital (24 vs 36, unpaired t test, p > 0.05). This was not statistically significant. The highest CTCAE graded epidural related harm was 3. The majority of our paediatric population undergoing lung transplantation utilise epidural analgesia. This locally completed audit suggests that epidural analgesia is associated with a reduction in the requirement for opioid related analgesia. In patients not receiving epidural analgesia there was an association with an increased length of stay and delayed extubation. Post-operative pathways in patients not receiving epidural analgesia differed significantly. Individualised analgesia management is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. Comparison of non-surgical treatment methods for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background: Lumbar spinal stenosis is the most common reason for spinal surgery in older adults. Previous studies have shown that surgery is effective for severe cases of stenosis, but many patients with mild to moderate symptoms are not surgical candidates. These patients and their providers are seeking effective non-surgical treatment methods to manage their symptoms; yet there is a paucity of comparative effectiveness research in this area. This knowledge gap has hindered the development of clinical practice guidelines for non-surgical treatment approaches for lumbar spinal stenosis.Methods/design: This study is a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial that will be conducted from November 2013 through October 2016. The sample will consist of 180 older adults (>60 years) who have both an anatomic diagnosis of stenosis confirmed by diagnostic imaging, and signs/symptoms consistent with a clinical diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis confirmed by clinical examination. Eligible subjects will be randomized into one of three pragmatic treatment groups: 1) usual medical care; 2) individualized manual therapy and rehabilitative exercise; or 3) community-based group exercise. All subjects will be treated for a 6-week course of care. The primary subjective outcome is the Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire, a self-reported measure of pain/function. The primary objective outcome is the Self-Paced Walking Test, a measure of walking capacity. The secondary objective outcome will be a measurement of physical activity during activities of daily living, using the SenseWear Armband, a portable device to be worn on the upper arm for one week. The primary analysis will use linear mixed models to compare the main effects of each treatment group on the changes in each outcome measure.
