Abstract

Monitoring of PD activity within high-voltage electrical environments is increasingly used for the assessment of insulation condition. Traditional measurement techniques employ technologies that require either off-line installation or have high power consumption and are hence costly. A wireless sensor network is proposed that utilizes only received signal strength to locate areas of PD activity within a high voltage electricity substation. The network comprises low-power and low-cost radiometric sensor nodes which receive the radiation propagated from a source of PD. Results are reported from several empirical tests performed within a large indoor environment and a substation environment using a network of nine sensor nodes. A portable PD source emulator was placed at multiple locations within the network. Signal strength measured by the nodes is reported via WirelessHART to a data collection hub where it is processed using a location algorithm. The results obtained place the measured location within 2 m of the actual source location.

12. Enhanced cognitive femtocell approach for co-channel downlink interference avoidance

Abstract

The deployment of low-power nodes such as femtocells within the macrocell’s coverage area is one of the main features of future 5G networks. However, challenges arise in the femtocell planning and management particularly due to interference occuring when they are deployed in a co-channel with the macrocell. The cognitive radio inspired femtocell is one of the solutions to mitigate interference. In the presented paper, the the cognetive scheme is enhanced by enabling the femtocell to takes advantage of the LTE channel dependent scheduling to predict the future resources of the nearby victim macro-users and avoids utilising them. Simulation results show that the co-channel interference on the macrocell downlink signal is minimal, and therefore the performance is improved, under the condition that the cognitive femtocell operates adaptively and monitors the spectrum allocations countinuously.

Abstract

A novel approach to broadband log-periodic antenna design is presented, where some of the most powerful evolutionary algorithms are applied and compared for the optimal design of wire log-periodic dipole arrays (LPDA) using Numerical Electromagnetics Code. The target is to achieve an optimal antenna design with respect to maximum gain, gain flatness, front-to-rear ratio (F/R) and standing wave ratio. The parameters of the LPDA optimized are the dipole lengths, the spacing between the dipoles, and the dipole wire diameters. The evolutionary algorithms compared are the Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm (PSO), Taguchi, Invasive Weed (IWO), and Adaptive Invasive Weed Optimization (ADIWO). Superior performance is achieved by the IWO (best results) and PSO (fast convergence) algorithms. NATO's Public Diplomacy Division in the framework of “Science for Peace”. Abstract

Increasing pressures on staff, combined with increased requests for feedback from students mean that there is less time to do more things. Investigation into potential methods to assist the staff of the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at City University London in their feedback activities identified that a combination of bespoke feedback combined with a standardised scheme (or rubric) may give the best results. The stand-alone SCOF tool was developed to address this observation and allows staff to create formatted feedback sheets quickly in different environments, using tools ranging from desktop computers to mobile telephones and tablets. It is currently about to undergo an institution-wide evaluation and will subsequently be made freely available to other institutions. This paper outlines the requirements of the tool, its usage, evaluation progress and future work to be undertaken, and includes a link to a public demonstration version of the tool.

Abstract

Images have long been shown to be an important tool for both learning and helping to develop community; in fact, there is at least one well-known English proverb that attests to this. One reason is that, used well, an image can remove the ambiguity that can be present in verbal and written communication. Research has also shown that imagery has a more direct route into our memory than the written word, which is perceived as an image and converted into meaning by the brain. This paper outlines the development of a tool (a ‘Block’ in Moodle terms) that allows the presentation of Flickr-stored photos within the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for setting general context of a module, describes the initial uses of the Block and suggests further uses for the future. The paper concludes with further work to be conducted.

The benefits of co-operation and collaboration on the learning process have long been recognised and steps have been taken to introduce these aspects into Managed/Virtual Learning Environments. However, the social aspects of these environments are generally restricted to people with an official affiliation with the hosting organisation. This paper discusses the StudyNet MLE developed by the University of Hertfordshire and the drivers for integrating social networking aspects to the system and widening access beyond the traditional community.
