The soils of streets, urban parks and suburban areas were examined for yeasts in the summer of 2020 on the territory of the southern cities of Russia and the Republic of Crimea: Krasnodar, Maykop, Sochi and Simferopol. The results of this study are compared with the results of a previous study carried out in these cities in 2019. This study was conducted three months after the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a sustained decline in household waste deposition in these areas. The number of tourists visiting these southern cities decreased significantly, and the number of walkers and visitors to urban parks fell sharply. In 2020, after the decline of household waste loads, the yeast abundance was slightly but reliably higher than in 2019. A total of 30 yeast species were observed - 11 ascomycetes and 19 basidiomycetes. This was more than in 2019 and was caused by twice as many autochthonous basidiomycetous yeast species (natural core community), which were found in urban soils only after the reduction in household waste in the environment - Apiotrichum dulcitum , A. laibachii, Saitozyma podzolica Solicoccozyma terricola. And at the same time, the proportion of clinically significant (opportunistic) yeasts, Candida sake and Meyerozyma guilliermondii , was much lower in 2020 than in 2019. The yeast number and species diversity in feces of pigeons (Columba livia) were studied in various locations of the city of Moscow: parks, playgrounds and school grounds. The total number and species composition of yeasts in feces depended on the isolation temperature. The average yeast number at a cultivation temperature of 25 °C was 3.2 × 10 5  CFU/g, at 37 °C-2.5 × 10 6  CFU/g. At 37 °C, the number of yeasts was higher due to a more abundant growth of pathogenic and opportunistic yeast species. In total, 13 species of yeasts were isolated from feces: eight ascomycetes and five basidiomycetes. The study revealed high values of relative abundance and frequency of occurrence of pathogenic species Candida albicans and opportunistic yeasts, i.e. Diutina catenulata, Millerozyma farinosa, Pichia kudriavzevii, and Trichosporon asahii. Pigeon feces were found to present a constant source of "infection" of the urban environment with yeast species that are hazardous to human health, especially for immunosuppressive individuals.

During studies on the endophytic yeast communities associated with fruits from Vietnam, three fermenting yeast strains were isolated from fruits of the coconut palm ( Cocos nucifera ). Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the ITS regions and D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that these strains represented a single species of the Yamadazyma clade that was distinct from the other related species. The new species represented a basal branch of the clade formed by the Yamadazyma species i.e. Y. insecticola and Y. takamatsuzukensis . Based on the phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic characteristics, the studied strains were assigned to a novel species of the genus Yamadazyma , for which the name Yamadazyma cocois f.a., sp. nov. is proposed. The holotype is VCIM 4241, with the ex-type cultures VTCC 920004=VKM Y-3049=KBP Y-6091 code 17-68. The MycoBank number is MB 834435.

The present paper describes the first screening study of the ability of natural yeast strains to synthesize in culture the plant-related cytokine hormone zeatin, which was carried out using HPLC-MS/MS. A collection of 76 wild strains of 36 yeast species (23 genera) isolated from a variety of natural substrates was tested for the production of zeatin using HPLC-MS/MS. Zeatin was detected in more than a half (55%) of studied strains and was more frequently observed among basidiomycetous than ascomycetous species. The amount of zeatin accumulated during the experiment varied among species and strains. Highest zeatin values were recorded for basidiomycete Sporobolomyces roseus and ascomycete Taphrina sp. that produced up to 8,850.0 ng and 5,166.4 ng of zeatin per g of dry biomass, respectively. On average, the ability to produce zeatin was more pronounced among species isolated from the arctic-alpine zone than among strains from tropical and temperate climates. Our study also demonstrated that epiphytic strains and pigmented yeast species, typically for phyllosphere, are able to more often produce a plant hormone zeatin than other yeasts., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests.

Yeast abundance and species diversity of endophytic complexes in galls (cecidia) formed on the leaves of Salix fragilis, Salix caprea, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, and Ulmus laevis and the epiphytic yeast communities of undamaged leaves of these plants were studied. Dynamics of yeast abundance in the galls was significantly different from that of the epiphytic yeast communities. Maximum numbers of endophytic yeast cells in the galls (up to 104 CFU/g) were comparable to abundance of epiphytic yeasts. A total of 14 species of endophytic yeasts were isolated from galls of different plants. Ascomycetous yeasts were found to predominate in the insect galls on willows and oak, while basidiomycetous yeasts dominated in mite galls on linden and elm, as well as on plant leaves. These results indicate that gall formation may be considered not only as a bidirectional pathological process of the interaction between plants and invertebrates, but also as a process in which the endophytic microbial population of the galls plays an important role.

Yeast abundance and species diversity on the surface and in inner tissues of Malus domestica and Pyrus communis fruits under high anthropogenic impact in the city of Moscow (Russia) were studied. Results demonstrated that abundance of epiphytic yeasts on the fruits increased gradually, reaching the maximum of 3.2 × 10⁴ CFU/g on mature fruits. During summer, abundance of endophytes did not change significantly (variation near 2.5 × 10³ CFU/g) until complete maturation, while in September their numbers increased to 104 CFU/g. Basidiomycetous yeasts (Filobasidium wieringae, F. magnum, Rhodotorula glutinis, and Rhodosporidiobolus colostri) predominated on the fruit surface. Ascomycetous species were the most diverse group inside the fruits, which quantitatively increased through maturation. It was found that the share of opportunistic species Candida parapsilosis in internal tissues was significant during the entire period of fruit formation and development under anthropogenic impact in the city. Specific properties of epiphytic and endophytic yeast communities developing in natural ecological niches under synanthropic conditions and anthropogenic impact are discussed.

The disc diffusion technique was applied to test sensitivity to anti-mycotics of 15 strains of fungi genus Candida separated from natural substrates and 25 clinical isolates. The fungi were of species C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. guilliermondii, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis.The high sensitivity of clinical isolates to Fluconazole, Nystatin, Сlotrimazole, Itraconazole, Amphotericin Bwas established, except strains C. glabrata 5 and C. tropicalis 4 demonstrating average level of sensitivity. The high sensitivity to anti-mycotics of strains separated from natural samples was demonstrated except 4 resistant strains C. parapsilosis. It can be supposed that up to one forth of natural strains of fungi genus Candida can have resistance to antibiotics, bringing to various forms of mycotic affections., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Yeast abundance and species diversity in the latex of caoutchouc tree Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Juss.) M611. Arg., on its green leaves, and in soil below the plant Was studied. The yeasts present in the fresh latex in concentrations of up to 5.5 log(CFU/g) were almost exclusively represented by the species Candida heveicola, which was previously isolated from Hevea latex in China. In the course of natural modification of the latex yeast diversity increased, while yeast abundance decreased. The yeasts of thickened and solidified latex were represented by typical epiphytic and ubiquitous species: Kodamea ohmeri, Debaryomyces hansenii, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and synanthropic species Candida parapsilosis and Cutaneotrichosporon arbori- formis. The role of yeasts in latex modification at the initial stages of succession and their probable role in de- velopment of antifungal activity in the latex are discussed.

Yeast abundance and species diversity in the colonies of Formica aquilonia ants in birch-pine forbs forest, Novosibirsk oblast, Russia, was studied. The average yeast number in the anthill material was 10³-10⁴CFU/g, reaching 10⁵ CFU/g in the hatching chambers. Typical litter species (Trichosporon monilfiforme and Cystofilobasidium capitatum) were predominant in soil and litter around the anthills. Apart from these species, ascomycete species of the family Debaryomycetaceae, Debaryomyces hansenii and Schwanniomyces vanrijiae, were predominant in the anthill material. Yeast population of the ants consisted exclusively of the members of these two species. Thus, highly specific yeast communities formed in the colonies of Formica aquilonia ants differ from the communities of surrounding soil. These differences are an instance of environment-forming activity of the ants.

Yeast abundance and diversity in a mixed forest sod-podzol soil under Impatiens parviflora DC plants was studied in comparison with unimpaired aboriginal herbaceous plants typical of the Mid-Russian secondary, after-forest meadow. The study was carried out throughout the vegetation period. Standard microbiological plating techniques revealed 36 yeast species. Typical pedobiotic (Cryptococcus podzolicus, Wickerhamomyces anomalus) and eurybiotic yeast species (Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) predominated in both biotopes. The relative abundance of the autochthonous soil yeast species Cryptococcus podzolicus was higher in the soil under aboriginal herbs than under Impatiens parviflora. Sites with aboriginal vegetation were also characterized by high abundance of the pedogamous species Schwanniomyces castelli and Torulaspora delbrueckii. The share of yeastlike Trichosporon fungi with high hydrolytic activity was considerably higher under adventitious plants Impatiens parviflora, as well as in the previously studied soil under Heracleum sosnowskyi.

Resistance of 14 yeast species belonging to different ecological groups to extensive storage in a dried state was investigated. Pedobiotic yeasts isolated mainly from the soils of humid areas (Cryptococcus podzolicus, Cr. terricola, and Lipomyces starkeyi) were the least resistant. The yeasts associated with the nectar of entomophilous plants (Metschnikowia reukaufii and Candida bombi) also exhibited low resistance to drying. Complete death of these species occurred during the first month of storage. Eurybiotic species from various environments (Cryptococcus magnus, Cryptococcus victoriae, Debaryomyces hansenii, and Cryptococcus wieringae) were somewhat more resistant. Pigmented plant-associated yeasts (Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Sporobolomyces roseus), as well as the pathogenic or opportunistic Candida strains (C. albicans and C. parapsilosis), were the most resistant to drying. Thus, occurrence of yeasts in natural habitats is closely associated with their ability to survive prolonged drying.

Well-known yeasts Kluyveromyces lactis var. lactis, which are usually associated with dairy prod- ucts, were discovered in nature (in woodland park soil under Impatiens glandulifera Royle plants). Reliable identification of the yeasts was carried out using physiological criteria (lactose and maltose utilization) and molecular markers (nucleotide sequence of the 5.8S-ITS rDNA fragment, pulsed-field electrophoresis, and Southern hybridization of chromosomal DNA with the LAC4 probe). Ecology of KI. lactis var. lactis is discussed.

Data on the yeasts colonizing the digestive tract ofa German cockroach have been first obtained. Cockroach cultures are used in the commercial production of allergy vaccines to treat patients sensitized to cockroach allergens. The enteric microflora of the insects can bring nonshared antigens into the composition of the agents manufactured. An investigation established that out of 10 yeast species isolated from the digestive tract of the cockroaches fed sterile food, 6 species (Candida glabrata, Cryptococcus magnus, Debaryomyces hansenii, Metschikowia pulcherrima, Phodo-torula glutinis, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) were isolated from both the digestive tract and excrements and 4 (Candida oleophila, Candida shehatae, Cryptococcus albidus, Pichia membmnaefciens) were only from the digestive tract. It seems that the yeast is either digested or inactivated in the digestive tract of the insects and loses their capacity to grow When the cockroaches were fed sterile food for a long time (at least a month), all yeasts virtually disappeared from the digestive tract of the insects except for Candida glabrata, C.shehatae, and Rh.mucilaginosa. However, only C.glabrata achieved a great deal (10(7)-10(8) CFU/g) of cockroaches (both imagoes and larvae of 5-7 ages), which statistically significantly decreased by no less than three orders of magnitude in the excrements after passing through the digestive tract.

Ten strains of a new endophytic ascospore-forming, methanol-assimilating yeast were isolated from the galls induced by sawflies on the leaves of willows in the Losiny Ostrov National Park (Moscow region). Standard phenotypical tests and phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA gene, 5.8S-ITS gene region and 26S rRNA gene (D1/D2 domains) sequences showed that the species belongs to the genus Ogataea. We describe it as Ogataea cecidiorum and designate type culture KBP Y-3846 (= CBS 11522(T) = VKM Y-2982(T) = VKPM Y-3482(T) = MUCL 52544(T) = NCAIM Y.01965(T)) as the type strain. The new species was registered in MycoBank under MB 515233.

It was found that plant storage tissues (fleshy sugar-containing fruits, subsurface metamorphically altered plant organs (storage roots, tubers, etc.), and starch-containing seed lobes) nearly always contain yeasts that are able to actively reproduce in these tissues causing no visible damage. Within storage tissues, yeast cells were detected both in the intercellular space and inside plant cells. In the tissues of fleshy fruits, endophytic yeasts are represented by the same species as epiphytic ones; cryptococci of the order Filobasidiales and ascomycetes belonging to the genera Hanseniaspora and Metschnikowia are predominant. In subsurface plant organs, red pigmented basidiomycetous yeasts of the genus Rhodotorula prevail. Selective growth of representatives of one species, Candida railenensis, is typical of starch-containing storage tissues of seeds. The results obtained change the established notion of the distributional patterns of yeast fungi in natural habitats and suggest that internal storage tissues of plants can be considered as a new interesting model for studies ofcoevolving plant-microbial associations.

Significant differences were revealed in the taxonomic structure of the epiphytic yeast communities formed on Sphagnum mosses and on the leaves of vascular plants. On mosses, low abundance of red yeasts was found (the most typical epiphytes on vascular plant leaves), along with a relatively high content and diversity of nonpigmented dimorphic basidiomycetes related to the order Leucosporidiales. The species composition of epiphytic yeasts from mosses is different from that of both forest and meadow grasses and of the parts of vascular plants submerged in the turf. The specific composition of the Sphagnum mosses yeast community is probably determined by the biochemical characteristics of this environment, rather than by the hydrothermal regime in the turf.

Many years of research has confirmed a wide distribution of anamorphous ascomycete yeasts in the phyllosphere of diverse plants of the Moscow oblast. Based on the standard morphological and physiological criteria, on the results of restriction analysis of the 5.8S-ITS rDNA region, and on the sequencing of the D1D2 region of 26S rDNA, these yeasts were identified as Candida oleophila Montrocher. Previous isolation of this species has been rare, possibly due to its incorrect identification. This species, together with phytobiotic basidiomycete yeasts, was shown to be dominant in the yeast epiphytic communities on the surface parts of plants. The relative abundance of C. oleophila is highest on plant fruits and increases significantly by the end of the vegetation period. Wide occurrence of this yeast species on fruits and in the phyllosphere may be related to its ability to compete with rapidly growing phytopathogenic fungi.

The numbers of epiphytic yeasts on the leaves and flowers of 25 plant species throughout their vegetation period was determined. The numbers of yeasts on the leaves were found to change regularly throughout the year. The average dynamics for all of the plant species investigated included an increase in yeast numbers during spring and summer with the maximum in late autumn and early winter. The character of the yeasts' dynamics depends on the ecological characteristics of the plants and the duration of the ontogenesis of their leaves and flowers. Three types of dynamics of epiphytic yeasts were revealed: year-round with an increase in autumn-winter, year-round without visible changes, and seasonal with a terminal increase for annual plants.

Year-round studies of epiphytic yeast communities revealed that the number of ascosporogenous yeasts of the genus Saccharomyces inhabiting living and decaying leaves of some plants increased considerably in certain short periods (at the beginning of summer and in winter). Massive isolation of saccharomycetes was performed from 11 plant species; earlier, these yeasts had been revealed mainly in sugar-rich substrates. The isolates were identified as Saccharomyces paradoxus based on their physiological properties and the lengths of restriction fragments of 5.8S-ITS rDNA. Possible reasons for short-term increases in the number of saccharomycetes in plant phyllosphere are discussed.

Analysis of an epiphytic yeast population on the leaves of the evergreen common wood sorrel Oxalis acetosella L. throughout a year showed that the density and the species composition of this population underwent regular seasonal changes. There were almost no yeasts on the young spring leaves. However, the yeast population on the mature leaves tended to increase in the autumn, reaching a maximum after the formation of continuous snow cover. Then the yeast population on the leaves tended to decrease, reaching a minimum in the spring. The species diversity of the yeasts was maximum in the autumn. The population of the epiphytic yeast species Cystofilobasidium capitatum, Rhodotorula fujisanensis, Leucosporium scottii, and Cryptococcus flavus peaked in the autumn. On the other hand, the population of the widespread epiphytic species Cryptococcus laurentii on the wood sorrel leaves peaked in January. The relative abundance of the red-pigmented phytobionts Rhodotorula glutinis and Sporobolomyces roseus virtually did not change throughout the year. The relative abundance of the euribiotic species Cryptococcus albidus showed irregular monthly variations. The data obtained show that the epiphytic microbial population of various plants can be comprehensively studied only by analyzing this population throughout the vegetative period of the plants.

House dust contains bacteria, mycelial fungi, microarthropods, and yeasts. The house dust samples collected in 25 apartments in Moscow and the Moscow region were found to contain yeasts belonging to the genera Candida, Cryptococcus, Debaryomyces, Rhodotorula, Sporobolomyces, and Trichosporon. The most frequently encountered microorganisms were typical epiphytic yeasts, such as Cryptococcus diffluens and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, which are capable of long-term preservation in an inactive state. The direct source of epiphytic yeasts occurring in the house dust might be the indoor plants, which were contaminated with these yeasts, albeit to a lesser degree than outdoor plants. Along with the typical epiphytic yeasts, the house dust contained the opportunistic yeast pathogens Candida catenulata, C. guillermondii, C. haemulonii, C. rugosa, and C. tropicalis, which are known as the causal agents of candidiasis. We failed to reveal any correlation between the abundance of particular yeast species in the house dust, residential characteristics, and the atopic dermatitis of the inhabitants.
