Background: Fatty acids can be protected by changing their structure or form against microbial activity, and the different forms of fatty acids can modulate the ruminal biohydrogenation rate and contribute to the desired fatty acid profile in milk fat., Objectives: The study investigated the effects of perilla (Perilla frutescens) dietary supplementation in the diet in different technological forms (seed, oil and formaldehyde-treated oil) on milk, plasma and ruminal fatty acid composition, and milk quality in lactating goats., Methods: The four dietary treatments consisted of (1) no supplementation, basal diet (CON); (2) perilla supplementation as seed at 44.7 g/kg (consisting of 20 g/kg oil (PS)); (3) perilla supplementation as oil at 20 g/kg (PO); (4) perilla supplementation as formaldehyde treated oil at 20 g/kg (protected perilla oil [PPO]). The experiment was implemented in a double 4 × 4 Latin square trial design, and sampling was carried out for 7 days after 21 days of adaptation., Results: Performance parameters were not affected by P. frutescens supplementation to the diet. PO decreased milk fat, whereas PPO increased milk fat. Milk cholesterol was not affected by P. frutescens dietary supplementation. Perilla oil supplementation in different forms to the diet did not affect ruminal pH, VFA and methane production. Perilla oil supplementation in different forms to the diet did not also affect the concentration of blood serum glucose, cholesterol and non-esterified fatty acids. Perilla supplementation to the diet increased the milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), C18:3n-3, C22:5n-3, C20:5n-3, C22:6n-3 and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations, and PPO group showed the greatest values. Ruminal palmitic (C16:0) acid was decreased, and in perilla groups, stearic acid (C18:0) concentration had the lowest, and ruminal c-9, t-11 CLA concentration had the highest value in PPO., Conclusions: It has been found that the most effective form of perilla oil in increasing milk quality is that with formaldehyde treatment (protected form). Perilla oil, which is a rich source of omega 3 in the diet, can be used to increase milk quality in goats without adversely affecting performance, ruminal fermentation and blood parameters., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: The ossicula auditus is the structure that transmits vibrations from the tympanic cavity to the auris interna. This assembly is formed by three ossicles: the malleus, incus and stapes. In addition, the bone that exists as os lenticulare in humans exists as processus lenticulare in most mammals., Objective: To our knowledge, no in-depth study has been published on the ossicula auditus of gazelles. This study aims to provide a comparative study of the morphology of the auditory ossicles in sheep, goats and gazelles., Methods: Ossicula auditus from six adult Awassi sheep, six hair goats and six gazelles was examined and photographed under a stereomicroscope., Results and Conclusion: It was determined that the ossicula auditus of gazelle, hair goat and Awassi sheep consisted of malleus, incus and stapes. In the species examined, it was observed that the articular surface on the caput mallei, the malleus protrusions and the distal part of the manubrium mallei differed between species. It was determined that the incus bone consists of a body and two crus. As an important morphological difference, the proc. lenticulare was found to be on the crus breve in all three species. It was determined that the stapes bone was quadrangular in the species examined, especially in goats, but this quadrangular shape, which is specific to ruminants, was not fully formed in other species. As a result, it was determined that the ossicula auditus of gazelle, hair goat and Awassi sheep showed morphologically different characteristics., (© 2024 The Author(s). The lactation character of dairy goats is the most important characteristic, and milk protein is an important index to evaluate milk quality. Casein accounts for more than 80% of the total milk protein in goat milk and is the main component of milk protein. Using GMECs (goat mammary epithelial cells) as the research object, the CHECK2 vector of the CSN1S1 gene and the overexpression vector of pcDNA 3.1 were constructed, and the mimics of miR-2284b and the interfering RNA of CSN1S1 were synthesized. Using PCR, RT-qPCR, a dual luciferase activity detection system, EdU, CCK8, cell apoptosis detection and ELISA detection, we explored the regulatory mechanism and molecular mechanism of miR-2284b regulation of αs1-casein synthesis in GMECs. miR-2284b negatively regulates proliferation and apoptosis of GMECs and αs1-casein synthesis. Two new gene sequences of CSN1S1 were discovered. CSN1S1-1/-2 promoted the proliferation of GMECs and inhibited cell apoptosis. However, it had no effect on αs1-casein synthesis. MiR-2284b negatively regulates αs1-casein synthesis in GMECs by inhibiting the CSN1S1 gene. These results all indicated that miR-2284b could regulate αs1-casein synthesis, thus playing a theoretical guiding role in the future breeding process of dairy goats and accelerating the development of dairy goat breeding.

Comprehensive understanding of reproductive hormones and environmental cues with their relationship is essential for efficient production in livestock sectors involving either assisted or natural reproductive methods. This study evaluated the effects of age and seasonal-associated changes in the blood concentrations of testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) of male Kalahari Red (KR) and Kalawad (KW)-crossbred goats. Based on a 2 × 3 × 4 factorial arrangement, a total of 42 bucks (KR n = 21 and KW n = 21) were allotted into three age groups (> 1 ≤ 2 years, > 2 ≤ 3 years and > 3 ≤ 4 years) with seven KR bucks and seven KW bucks each per age group; reared under different seasons (early rainy, late rainy, early dry and late dry). The animals were managed semi-intensively, kept in an open-ventilated pen and subjected to same nutritional regime throughout the one-year experimental period. Follicle stimulating hormone and testosterone concentrations were analyzed in serum samples. Data obtained reproductive hormones were subjected to three-way Analysis of Variance using SAS 1999. Results show that breed had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on both serum FSH and testosterone concentrations. The highest FSH (0.49 ± 0.02 ng/mL, 0.45 ± 0.01 ng/mL, 0.41 ± 0.1 ng/mL and 0.47 ± 0.07 ng/mL) mean values (P > 0.05) were observed in KR in September, October, November and May, respectively while the highest (2.6 ± 0.02 ng/mL) testosterone concentration in KW (p < 0.05) was obtained in December. Testosterone had irregular patterns between breeds and months of sampling. FSH was at peak (p > 0.05) in KR during the late rainy season at all ages while the values of FSH concentration in KW were not significantly different at all ages and seasons. The highest (2.05 ± 0.11 ng/mL) serum testosterone mean value in KW peaked (p < 0.05) age > 3 ≤ 4 years during the late rainy season. Testosterone concentration was lower and steady at all ages during rainy seasons in KR but started fluctuating during the early dry season. The least mean (0.62 ± 0.07 ng/mL and 0.68 ± 0.05 ng/mL) were recorded (p > 0.05) in KW during the late dry season at age > 2 ≤ 3 and > 3 ≤ 4 years respectively. In KR and KW goat breeds raised under tropical condition, the high seasonal variations were responsible for the fluctuations in the reproductive hormones which resultantly altered or lowered the sexual activity of the animals at certain season(s)., (© 2024. Goat production is affected by reproductive seasonality. In vitro embryo production (IVEP) could overcome this effect. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the season of semen collection/freezing on IVEP of prepubertal goat oocytes and on sperm quality and functionality concerning capacitation. Semen from six fertile bucks was collected, pooled and cryopreserved in spring and autumn and used for IVEP of oocytes recovered during the breeding season. Oocytes were IVM in TCM-199 with hormones, EGF and cysteamine; fertilized and cultured in BO-IVF and BO-IVC media (IVF Bioscience, UK). Semen samples were assessed at 0 and 3 h after culture in capacitating (BO-IVF, CAP) and non-capacitating conditions for sperm plasma membrane and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), intracellular calcium and plasma membrane lipid disorder. Blastocyst production was higher with spring sperm compared to autumn (12.0% vs. 2.1%, respectively; p < .05). After CAP, acrosome reaction and intracellular calcium were higher (p < .05) in spring than autumn sperm. No differences were found in other sperm parameters. In conclusion, seasonal variations in the IVEP of prepubertal goats could be linked to differences in sperm ability to undergo in vitro capacitation., (© 2024 The Authors. GATA4 plays a pivotal role in the reproductive processes of mammals. However, the research on GATA4 in goat ovary is limited. This study aimed to study the expression and function of GATA4 in goat ovary. Utilizing real-time PCR and western blot analysis, we studied the expression and regulatory mechanisms of GATA4 in goat ovary and granulosa cells (GCs). We found that GATA4 was expressed in all follicle types in the goat ovary, with significantly higher levels in GCs of larger follicles (>3 mm) compared to those in smaller follicles (<3 mm). Additionally, we demonstrated that human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) induced GATA4 mRNA expression via the activation of PKA, MEK, p38 MAPK, PKC, and PI3K pathways in vitro. Our study also showed that hCG suppressed the levels of miR-200b and miR-429, which in turn directly target GATA4, thereby modulating the basal and hCG-induced expression of GATA4. Functionally, we examined the effect of siRNA-mediated GATA4 knockdown on cell proliferation and hormone secretion in goat GCs. Our results revealed that knockdown of GATA4, miR-200b, and miR-429 suppressed cell proliferation. Moreover, knockdown of GATA4 decreased estradiol and progesterone production by inhibiting the promoter activities of CYP11A1, CYP19A1, HSD3B, and StAR. Water salinity has a significant impact on water quality, posing challenges for livestock production and productivity, particularly in arid regions where climate change affects freshwater availability. This study aimed to determine the effect of drinking saline water on the carcass and meat quality traits of sheep and goats in Ethiopia. A total of 100 males with an average initial body weight of growing (18.17 ± 0.51) and mature (22.22 ± 0.52 kg) Blackhead Ogaden sheep and growing (17.99 ± 0.50) and mature (21.99 ± 0.54) kg) Somali goats were used. The design of the experiment was a three-way factorial RCBD with three-factor combinations (5 treatment levels, 2 species, and 2 age groups).Water treatments were natural water (Lake Basaka water (control), low saline water (L-SW), moderate saline water (M-SW), high saline water (H-SW), and very high saline water (VH-SW); that is, NaCl was added to natural water at concentrations of 7.95, 11.93, 15.90, and 19.88 g TDS/L, respectively. The finding showed that increasing salinity levels in drinking water reduced slaughter body weight (SBW), carcass weight (CW), dressing percentage (DP), rib eye area (RAE), total edible components (TEC), and increased total non-edible components (TNEC) (P < 0.05). Similarly, sheep and mature animals had higher (P < 0.001) SBW, CW, DP, RAE, and TEC than goats and growing animals. Sensory evaluation, shear force, and proximate analysis were affected by water salinity, species, and age groups (P < 0.05). A comprehensive genomic scan of selective sweeps was conducted in autochthonous Attappady Black and improved dual-purpose Malabari goat breeds in south India. High-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker data, obtained through Illumina goat SNP50 BeadChip genotyping of 48 goats (24 each of Attappady Black and Malabari goats), were utilized for the analysis. Selection signature analysis, employing hapFLK analysis based on haplotype differentiation, identified seven significant sweep regions (p < 0.005). Notably, one of these regions encompassed the genomic area housing the casein cluster and quantitative trait loci associated with milk production on chromosome 6. Gene ontology enrichment analysis of 166 putative selective genes associated with these sweep regions revealed 13 significantly over-represented Panther pathways (p ≤ 0.05), including the TGF-beta signalling pathway and GNRHR pathway. Objectives: In this study, the effects of sex and birth type on growth performance, withers height (WH), radiographic measurements and selected hormone profiles in Gurcu goat kids were investigated., Methods: Twenty kids (single female = 5, single male = 5, twin female = 5, twin male = 5) were included in the study. Body weight (BW), WH, radiographic measurements (humerus length [HL], radius length [RL], proximal humerus epiphyseal plate width [HEP] and distal ulna epiphyseal plate width [UEP]) and biochemical analysis (for serum calcitonin, free triiodothyronine [FT3], free thyroxine [FT4], growth hormone [GH] and insulin-like growth factor-I [IGF-I]) were performed at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 months of age., Results: BW was significantly higher in males starting from the seventh month compared to females (p < 0.05). HL was higher in males at seventh (p = 0.009) and ninth (p = 0.033) months, whereas RL was lower in twins at the third month (p = 0.021). UEP was wider in males at seventh (p = 0.008) and ninth (p = 0.036) months. Closure of HEP was observed in 65% of kids by the 12th month. Calcitonin was lower in twins at third (p = 0.045) and fifth (p = 0.006) months, with changes observed due to group and time effects (p < 0.05), whereas other hormones only changed with time (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were observed between BW, WH, HL, RL and IGF-I. There was a negative correlation between BW, WH, HL, RL, IGF-I and HEP, UEP, calcitonin, FT3, FT4, GH., Conclusion: Sex and birth type in Gurcu goat kids may have an impact on growth performance, radiographic measurements and certain hormonal profiles., (© 2024 The Author(s). The Protein Phosphatase 6 Catalytic Subunit (PPP6C) is evolutionarily a conserved gene in eukaryotes known to play a significant role in mammalian reproduction. This study aimed to investigate expression patterns of PPP6C and explore its association with litter size in Shaanbei white cashmere (SBWC) goats. Initially, we determined the mRNA expression levels of PPP6C in both male and female goats across multiple tissues. The results showed that PPP6C mRNA was expressed in multiple tissues, with higher levels in the testis and fallopian tubes, suggesting its involvement in goat reproduction. Additionally, we identified a novel 19 bp InDel within the PPP6C gene in a population of 1030 SBWC goats, which exhibited polymorphism. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between the19 bp InDel mutation and litter size (P < 0.05). Subsequent, bioinformatics analysis, including linkage disequilibrium (LD) block and selective scanning, highlighted the linkage tendency among most InDel loci did not stand out within B-8 block, there were still some InDel loci linked to the 19 bp within a relatively narrow region. Furthermore, comparative analysis with Bezoars, these selective signals all indicated that this gene was under higher selection pressure, implying that the 19 bp InDel locus within the PPP6C is potentially associated with domesticated traits, particularly in relation to litter size. This study aimed at scrutinizing efficiency of incorporating L-carnitine or M. oleifera leaves extract into semen diluent on improving cryopreservation capacity and in vitro fertilization ability of buck spermatozoa. Ejaculates (n=48) were collected by an artificial vagina from six adult Damascus bucks twice weekly during the breeding season (September-October). Following initial evaluation, ejaculates of each collection session from the same bucks were pooled, diluted (1:10) with glycerolized (3 % glycerol, v/v) tris-citric acid egg yolk diluent and were split into three aliquots. The first aliquot served as control, whereas the second and third aliquots were supplemented with 4 μL/mL L-carnitine and 400 μL/mL moringa leaves extract (v/v), respectively. Thereafter, all specimens were processed for cryopreservation and were stored in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C) for 12 months before post-thaw sperm criteria were analyzed by a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. Integrity of sperm DNA post thawing was visualized in all semen groups by fluorescence imaging, and in vitro fertilization ability of spermatozoa was also determined. Inclusion of L-carnitine or moringa leaves extract into the diluent improved (P<0.05) post-thaw sperm physical, morphofunctional and kinematic attributes, whilst maintaining (P<0.05) integrity of sperm DNA throughout the freezing and thawing cycle. Consequently, both supplemented groups yielded higher (P<0.05) in vitro fertilization rates compared to control. These results accentuate the protective roles of these antioxidants on buck sperm against consequences of cryopreservation-induced oxidative stress, hence ameliorating post-thaw sperm quality and fertilization competence. Background: It is proven that B vitamins through promote a wide range of metabolic pathways in animals as cofactors improve animal performance., Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the impacts of maternal B complex vitamin injection on performance and plasma parameters in goats and their offspring, as well as the faeces status of newborn kids., Methods: In this research, the pregnant goats (3 years old) were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (without B complex vitamin injection) and the B complex vitamin group (5 mL B complex vitamin injection per animal). The animals were injected with 5 mL B complex vitamin twice during the transition period (5 weeks pre- and 5 weeks post-kidding). The goats during the transition period and kids on days 10, 20 and 30 were weighed. Feed intake by goats and consumption of milk and starter in kids were recorded daily. The dry matter digestibility by kids was tested by collecting samples of faeces and feed for 5 days in the last week. Chemical analysis was determined using the AOAC method. The kids' faeces were prepared daily during the study. The blood samples of goats and newborn kids were taken 7 days after kidding. Then, levels of B group vitamin, as well as concentrations of liver enzymes, thyroid hormones and immunological parameters, were determined in plasma of goat and their offspring. In addition, concentrations of glucose and insulin were measured in goat plasma (Asadi et al., 2024)., Results: According to results, the performances of goats and their offspring, as well as kids' faeces status, were improved by maternal B complex vitamin injection (p < 0.0001). The levels of cobalamin, pyridoxine, thiamine, folic acid, nicotinic, pantothenic and unconjugated pteridine increased in the plasma of goats and their kids in the B complex vitamin group compared with the control group during the transition period (p < 0.0001). Injection of maternal B complex vitamin raised the plasma levels of triiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine, immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M in goats and their offspring (p < 0.0001). Higher levels of glucose and lower levels of insulin were determined in the goats injected with B complex vitamin (p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: These results suggest that maternal B complex vitamin injection is required for the improvement of performance, health status and the blood plasma parameters in pregnant goats and their kids., (© 2024 The Author(s). Goats play an important role in the agricultural business, providing valuable income sources through producing high-quality animal protein. They are widespread livestock for rural households due to their inherent resiliency, adaptability to many environments, and suitability in sustainable production systems. While goats are reared in highly diverse environments, a great portion of their population is reared in hot environments. Heat stress is known to affect goats' productive and reproductive performance negatively. However, goats can remarkably thrive in harsh conditions due to physiological, metabolic, and molecular adaptive mechanisms. In the face of it, in the last decades, the nutrition of goats, particularly their nutritional requirements, has received special attention. Research groups worldwide have dedicated their efforts to updating feeding systems for goats. Our objective was to present the recent findings on the energy and nutrient requirements of growing and pregnant goats in hot environments. Energy and protein requirements for the maintenance and growth of goats are influenced by sex and genotype only when mature weight is not considered in the models. Sex and genotype affect the efficiency of energy use for growth but do not affect the efficiency of protein use. Major mineral requirements for maintenance and growth are not affected by sex, except for magnesium. However, the phosphorus, sodium, and potassium requirements of goats raised in hot environments differ from those in the feeding systems. This difference may be related to the adaptation mechanisms goats employ to cope with the hot environmental conditions. Regarding requirements for pregnancy, there was no effect of days of pregnancy on the energy or protein requirements. The efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for pregnancy increased with the progress of pregnancy. Mineral accretion for pregnancy differs between single and twin pregnancies and, irrespective of pregnancy type, the mineral requirements increase as pregnancy progresses. The differences between the estimated dietary requirements of goats raised in hot environments and the most widely adopted feeding systems suggest that these goats may be using energy and nutrients to cope with heat stress and other stressors associated with hot environments. Aims: To compare the recovery of lambs, goats, and calves from head-only (HO) or high-frequency head-to-body stunning and evaluate the complementary use of behaviour and electroencephalography (EEG) to assess return to consciousness after electrical stunning in these species., Methods: Six-month-old lambs, adult goats and calves (< 7 days old) were subjected to reversible head-only stunning (50 Hz, 1 A, 2 seconds) or reversible high-frequency head-to-body stunning (RHTB: HO followed by 2,000 Hz, 2 A, 4-second stun to body). Following stunning, behavioural recovery was assessed in 21 lambs, 22 goats, and 20 calves. Latencies to first perform behaviours (end of convulsions, head lift, attempt to right, successful righting, attempt to stand, successful standing) after stunning were scored from video recordings. Recovery of electrical brain activity indicative of consciousness was assessed using EEG in a separate cohort of minimally-anaesthetised lambs, goats and calves (n = 20 per species). EEG traces collected before and after stunning were classified as normal, epileptiform, isoelectric, or transitional activity. Following stunning, the duration of epileptiform and isoelectric activity combined (states of brain activity incompatible with conscious awareness) was calculated, as was latency to return of normal (pre-stun) EEG., Results: The RHTB stun was reversible in all three species, although one sheep failed to recover and was euthanised. Both methods caused tonic and clonic convulsions in all species. Behavioural recovery of sheep and calves was similar for both methods while goats took longer to recover from RHTB than HO stunning. There was no evidence of differences between methods in the duration of EEG incompatible with consciousness or the latency to recovery of normal EEG., Conclusions: Head-to-body stunning as applied here produced a reversible electrical stun in lambs, adult goats and young calves, although the benefits in terms of meat quality and operator safety are uncertain. Goats took longer to recover behaviourally from head-to-body stunning, possibly due to disrupted motor function, but there was no indication that post-stun unconsciousness lasted longer than following head-only stunning in any species. The normal behaviour for the animals' developmental age should be considered when deciding on behavioural indicators of recovery. The minimal anaesthesia model provided excellent quality EEG data that was valuable for interpretation of the behavioural responses., Clinical Relevance: For the purposes of pre-slaughter stunning of sheep, goats and young calves, recovery appears comparable between the two methods, with all but 1/63 animals in the behaviour study recovering normal function.

Goat bucks are seasonal breeders that show variation in sperm quality, endogenous melatonin (MLT), and presumably in the expression of MLT receptors on the sperm throughout the year, which may modify sperm freezability. The aim of this study was to determine whether sperm freezability is associated with (i) endogenous melatonin levels in seminal plasma and (ii) the expression of sperm plasma membrane melatonin receptors (MT1, MT2). To evaluate this, spermatozoa from seven Saanen goat bucks were cryopreserved throughout the year in Mexico using a standard freezing protocol. Seminal plasma MLT concentrations were determined by ELISA and the expression and localization of MT1 and MT2 were detected by immunocytochemistry and confirmed by western blotting. The recovery rate of progressive motility after thawing was higher in spring than autumn and winter; in contrast, the F pattern (CTC assay) was higher in winter than in the other seasons. A proportional increase in the AR pattern (CTC assay) was smaller in winter than in the other seasons and the proportion of sperm showing high plasma membrane fluidity was higher in spring than in summer and autumn. The seminal plasma MLT concentrations showed no significant interseasonal differences. The MT1 receptor was immunolocalised at the apical region of the sperm head, while MT2 was mainly localised in the neck. The relative expression of MLT receptors showed significant differences between summer and winter for all bands, except at 75 kDa of MT2. In conclusion, there was an association between the relative expression of MT1 and MT2 receptors throughout the year and sperm freezability in goat bucks in México. Hemp ( Cannabis sativa L .) is an annual plant belonging to the family of Cannabaceae with several varieties characterized by different fatty acid profile, content in flavonoids, polyphenols, and cannabinoid compounds. Hemp is mostly used in livestock nutrition as oil or as protein cake, but not as inflorescences. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary hemp inflorescences on milk yield and composition in grazing dairy goats. Twenty Camosciata delle Alpi goats at their 3rd parity and with a mean body weight of 45.2 ± 2.0 kg, immediately after kidding, were equally allocated into two groups (G: Grazing and GH: grazing and hemp). For three months, all goats were fed on a permanent pasture and received 700/head/day of concentrate; diet of group GH was supplemented with 20 g/head/day of hemp inflorescences. Goats' body weight did not change during the trial. Individual milk yield was daily recorded and samples collected every 20 days for chemical composition and fatty acid profile analysis. No significant differences were found for milk yield and chemical composition. Caproic (C6:0) (1.80 vs. 1.74%; p  < 0.01) and lauric acids (C12:0) were significantly higher in milk of group GH (4.83 vs. 4.32%; p  < 0.01) as well as linoleic (C18:2) (2.04 vs. 1.93%; p  < 0.05), adrenic acid (C22:4) (0.046 vs. 0.031%, p  < 0.05), omega-6/omega-3 ratio (3.17 vs. 2.93, p  < 0.05) and total conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) (0.435 vs. 0.417%; p  < 0.01). The results of this study suggest that the supplementation of grazing goats' diet with hemp inflorescences may enhance the milk nutritional characteristics by increasing its content of CLAs and other beneficial fatty acids.

This meta-analysis consolidates various related studies to identify patterns in the impact of feeding algae on performance aspects, including milk fat, milk protein, and carcass yield in several ruminant species, such as cattle, sheep, and goats. The data were collected from 67 articles that examined factors such as the type of algae (macro- and microalgae), algal species, and animal breed. Barki sheep, Moghani sheep, and Zaraibi goats demonstrated an increased average daily gain (P < 0.05) when fed with both macro- and microalgae. Conversely, sheep such as Canadian Arcott and Ile-de-France showed adverse effects on the feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.05). Elevated FCR values were observed across castrated and young animals (P < 0.05). Algae extract notably increased the hot carcass weight (P < 0.001), particularly among Moghani sheep (P < 0.001). Raw algae significantly reduced the milk fat content (P < 0.001), particularly in cattle and sheep (P < 0.001). A decrease in milk fat was particularly noticeable in lactating females of Assaf sheep, Damascus goats, and Holstein cows (P < 0.001). Overall, algae inclusion tended to decrease the milk protein content (P < 0.05), leading to reduced milk production (P < 0.001) with cumulative algae feeding in Assaf sheep. However, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; C18:2 c9,t11-CLA and C18:2 c12,t10-CLA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; C22:6n-3) mostly increased in meat and milk from Holstein cow, Assaf sheep, Dorset sheep, and Ile-de-France sheep (P < 0.01). In Brief: Conditioned medium from Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells improved tissue and preantral follicle outcomes, preventing adverse effects of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and epigenetic changes., Abstract: This study investigated the methylation patterns of H3K4me3 and H3K9me3, as well as the mRNA expression of genes encoding the epigenetic regulators KDM1AX1, KDM1AX2, and KDM3A in goat preantral follicles developed in vivo (Uncultured control) or after in vitro culture for 7 days in either the absence (α-MEM+) or presence of conditioned medium (α-MEM+ + CM) from Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs). In the invivo setting, all follicular categories exhibited similar H3K4me3 and H3K9me3 patterns, and transcripts of KDM1AX1, KDM1AX2, and KDM3A were detected in all samples. During in vitro culture, α-MEM+ + CM enhanced several important aspects. It increased the percentage of normal growing follicles, oocyte diameters across all categories, stromal cell density, and the H3K4me3 methylation pattern in preantral follicles. Simultaneously, it decreased the levels of reduced thiols and reactive oxygen species in the spent media, diminished the presence of lipofuscin aggresomes, lowered granulosa cell apoptotic rates, and reduced the H3K9me3 methylation pattern in preantral follicles. In conclusion, the findings from this study provide compelling evidence that supplementing the in vitro culture medium (α-MEM+) with CM from WJ-MSCs has a protective effect on goat preantral follicles. Notably, CM supplementation preserved follicular survival, as evidenced by enhanced follicular and oocyte growth and increased stromal cell density when compared to the standard culture conditions in the α-MEM+ medium. Furthermore, CM reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis and promoted alterations in H3K4me3 and H3K9me3 patterns.

This study aimed to determine the effects of heat stress on 30 Saanen goats of different ages (young, middle-aged, and old). The average temperature and humidity values during the trial were 27.82 °C and 40.65%, respectively. Statistically significant differences in pulse rate (PR), respiratory rate (SS), and temperature humidity index (THI) were found between months (P < 0.05). Beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) values were found to be statistically significant in the young and middle-aged group (P < 0.05), with the highest in the middle-aged group obtained in June (0.65 mmol/L). Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and urea (BUN) were significantly different (P < 0.05) in all age groups, whereas creatinine values showed no significant differences between groups. Significant positive relationships were found between body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS), as well as pulse rate (PR) and daily average daily milk yield (DAMY) (P < 0.01). A positive correlation was also found between the respiratory rate (SS) and pulse rate (P < 0.01). As a result, although attempts have been made to prevent the decrease in productivity with applications for animals under heat stress, the optimal strategy may be to address the source of the problem. Issues that cause heat accumulation in the body should be identified and necessary arrangements should be made in the shelter to distribute heat to ensure that animals are less affected. Shaded areas should be provided in cases of stress caused by heat. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association among the largest follicle (LF), preovulatory estradiol (E2), and predominant vaginal epithelial cell at the completion of hormonal ovarian stimulation for fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in goats. Thirty-seven crossbred Boer does received gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and intravaginal progesterone (P4)-releasing devices (day 0). On day 5, P4 devices were removed and does received prostaglandin F 2α and equine chorionic gonadotrophin. On day 7, does received GnRH, and FTAI was undertaken. On day 7, does were divided into three groups, i.e. small-sized (3-3.9 mm; n = 5), medium-sized (4-4.9 mm; n = 8), and large-sized (≥5 mm; n = 24) according to the diameter of the ovarian LF; follicular characteristics (number and diameter) were identified, and blood samples and vaginal smears were collected. The average diameters of total antral follicles and LF and the percentage of superficial cell were greatest in large-sized LF does (p < .01). The average diameters of total antral follicle (r = .68) and LF (r = .71), number of preovulatory follicle (r = .58), and plasma E2 concentrations (r = .61) were positively correlated with the percentage of superficial cells (p < .01). The likelihood of a pregnancy outcome after the FTAI increased by 13.71 times in does with a greater average diameter of antral follicle, 14.18 times with emergence of a large preovulatory follicle, and 36.83 times with a higher percentage of vaginal superficial cells (p < .01). Heat stress (HS) disrupts testicular homeostasis because of oxidative stress. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a thiol compound with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. As a sequel, this research aimed to assess the ameliorative effects of NAC supplementation on the reproductive performance of goat bucks kept under environmental HS. Primarily, Doppler examination as well as semen collection and evaluation were conducted on 12 mature bucks for 2 weeks (W) as pre-heat stress control (W1 and W2) during winter (February 2023). The temperature-humidity index (THI) was 63.4-64.3 (winter season). Then during summer HS conditions (from the beginning of July till the end of August 2023) bucks were assessed before NAC supplementation (W0), afterwards they were arbitrarily assigned into two groups. The control group (CON; n = 6) received the basal diet while the NAC group (n = 6) received the basal diet in addition to oral NAC daily for 7 weeks (W1-W7). The THI was 78.1-81.6 (summer season). Testicular blood flow parameters, serum concentration of nitric oxide (NO) and testosterone were measured. Additionally, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in seminal plasma and semen quality parameters were evaluated. There were marked reductions (p < 0.05) in the resistive index (RI; W1, W4 and W5), pulsatility index (PI; W2 and W4-W7), and systolic/diastolic ratio (S/D; W4-W7) in the NAC group compared to the CON group. Furthermore, testosterone and NO levels were higher (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) in the NAC group (W2, W3, W5 and W3-W5, respectively). Seminal plasma TAC increased (p < 0.05) and MDA decreased (p < 0.05) in the NAC group (W2, W4 and W5) compared to the CON group. Moreover, there were marked improvements (p < 0.05) in semen quality parameters (mass motility, total motility, viability and normal morphology) in the NAC group. This study aimed to investigate a new implantation site (intra-auricular subcutaneous - IA) compared to intramuscular (IM) in the cervical portion (cervical splenius muscle) of the neck for ovarian transplantation in goats. Morphological aspects of the implant, follicular activation and morphology, and type I and III collagen deposits of the transplanted tissue were evaluated. Four fragments of the ovarian cortex were allotransplanted at the IA and IM sites in all goat recipients and recovered 7 (IA-7; IM-7) or 15 (IA-15; IM-15) days later and submitted to histological analysis. Two fragments/animal were separated for the fresh control (FC) group. There was a higher percentage of normal and developing primordial follicles at the IA-7 site (P < 0.05) compared to the other treatments, with similar values to the fresh control. Type I and III collagen fibers differed between the groups (P < 0.05), showing a considerable decrease in type I collagen fibers at the IA-7 site compared to the FC. However, the IM-7 and IA-15 sites showed higher values of type I collagen fibers, showing similarity to the FC. The present study was undertaken to assess the ameliorative effect of dietary supplementation of astaxanthin in Sirohi goats under simulated heat stress conditions. Eighteen healthy female Sirohi goats were divided equally into three groups (n = 6): Heat-Stressed Control (HSC), Treatment 1 (T1), and Treatment 2 (T2). During the experiment, goats in the T1 group were supplemented with astaxanthin at the rate of 25 mg/animal/day, while those in the T2 group received supplementation of 50 mg/animal/day. The experiment was conducted for 42 days: 14 days of acclimatization period, next 21 days animals were exposed to 42ºC for 6 h from 09:00 h to 15:00 h and 7 days of recovery period. On a daily basis, we recorded the physiological responses of goats and collected environmental data at the experimental site. Blood samples were collected 0 and 14th days of acclimatization, on 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th and 21st day of heat exposure and on the 7th day of the recovery period. The rectal temperature and respiration rates of the treatment groups were lower than those of the HSC group during the exposure period. Heat stress in the supplemented groups was associated with reduced levels of hepatic enzymes such as AST and ALT. Serum urea, creatinine and albumin levels were significantly (P < 0.05) different between control and treatment groups. It was thus concluded that dietary inclusion of antioxidant astaxanthin can ameliorate induced thermal load as evident from changes in physio-biochemical parameters in the Sirohi goats, that was more prominent at 50 mg/ animal/day than 25 mg/ animal/day., (© 2024. The risk of acquiring new intramammary infections is high at the end of lactation, especially for the high milk-producing dairy animals. Resistance to bacterial infection increases following the completion of mammary gland involution after milking cessation. The serotonin precursor 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) could accelerate involution by increasing circulating serotonin levels, but ruminal microbes may degrade 5-HTP if orally administered to adult ruminants. It is unclear whether rumen-protected 5-HTP could effectively mediate circulating serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and therefore accelerate mammary gland involution in ruminants. Goats were used as a model in the current study to investigate the effects of rumen-protected 5-HTP on behaviour, 5-HT metabolism, and mammary involution in ruminants. In the first experiment, 16 female Dazu black goats were assigned to one of four groups in a randomised block design. The treatments included a basal diet plus 0, 4, 20, or 100 mg/kg BW of rumen-protected 5-HTP. Serum was collected at 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h after offering the rumen-protected 5-HTP in the morning feed, and the behaviours were monitored. In the second experiment, 12 female Dazu black goats (Somatic cell count < 250 000) were randomly assigned to the control (basal diet) or rumen-protected 5-HTP group (basal diet plus 20 mg/kg BW). Milk or mammary secretions were manually collected aseptically on d -1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 around weaning. The results depicted that rumen-protected 5-HTP supplementation elevated circulating 5-HTP and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid concentrations, while 20 mg/kg BW of rumen-protected 5-HTP supplementation lowered the goats' locomotive activity. A high concentration of rumen-protected 5-HTP (100 mg/kg BW) increased serum alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase concentrations. Moreover, oral supplementation with 20 mg/kg BW of rumen-protected 5-HTP accelerated mammary gland involution and reduced feed intake in goats after weaning. This study aims to describe socio-economic aspects, farming practices and production limitations of goats by surveying 53 farms holding 5507 head in the regions of Tataouine-Tunisia. It was revealed that goats represented a major source of income for most of the producers (66.1%). Approximately 35.8% of the farmers had not received formal education, with the majority (56.6%) having been engaged in goat breeding for over 10 years. Additionally, 50.9% of stockholders relied on technical knowledge for animal breeding. The investigated herds were mostly (97.4%) comprised of local goat breeds. The most common management system was semi-intensive (49.1%) based on grazing in communal rangelands and supplementation with agricultural by-products and concentrates. The fertility, fecundity and prolificacy rates were 91.3 ± 8.3, 109.8 ± 19.5 and 127.0 ± 15.4%, respectively. The main reasons for keeping goats were their major contribution to the income by the sale of male kids and the provision of milk for home consumption. Sale of male kids at an age of 7.7 months was practiced mostly via intermediaries (94.3%) and rarely directly to butchers and markets (5.7%). The total amount of milk produced on each farm was on average 15.1 l/day, and more than half of farmers (54.7%) consumed goat milk as part of their daily diet. The majority (71.7%) of respondents locally processed milk into Leben, Rayeb and cheese because the goat milk market faced constraints in the Tataouine regions, mainly in terms insufficient milk production and low consumer acceptability. Goats contribute to the income source in rural zones of southern Tunisia, where their breeding is mainly for the purpose of meat sale and the provision of milk for home consumption. Crossbreeding aims to increase the productivity of local or indigenous animals by introducing exotic breeds. This study aims to assess the effects of crossbreeding using 50% Boer bucks crossed with Ethiopian indigenous Woyto-Guji goats and to evaluate farmers' perceptions towards crossbred kids. Data were collected from five purposively selected districts in southern Ethiopia. Personal interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and field observations were employed to gather information on the goat production systems and farmers' perceptions. The mean ± SD of goat flock size in the study area were 7.31 ± 5.89 heads per household (HH) with larger flock sizes observed in the Alaba zone (10.32 ± 6.56). Goats in the studied areas were primarily kept for income generation. The average age at first kidding was 11.3 ± 1.3 months. Relatively better management practices were observed for crossbred goats in the Alaba, Loko Abaya, and Gurage zones. Respondent farmers highly appreciated Boer crossbred goats due to their superior perception of attractive coat color (4.39 times greater, P < 0.001), docile behavior (3.59 times greater, P < 0.001), fast growth rate (1.64 times greater, P < 0.05), and market preference (5.81 times greater, P < 0.001). However, susceptibility to disease and drought was considered as drawbacks of crossbred kids in the studied areas. It was also reported that crossbreed goats fetched better prices than indigenous goats of a similar age group and under the same management system. All visited farmers expressed a strong interest in crossbreeding. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Boer crossbred goats perform well in southern Ethiopia. Therefore, the continued production of crossbred kids can be disseminated to these areas. Additionally, it is suggested to consider the interests of goat producers in the remaining areas. Integrated improved management systems need to be implemented to enhance the survival of crossbred kids. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of supplemental dietary curcumin on post-partum uterine involution using pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasonography in postpartum goats. Ten pluriparous Zaraibi goats were used and divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 5; control) received only a base diet. Group 2 (n = 5; treated) received a base diet supplemented with curcumin (200 mg/kg diet) daily for 28 days, starting from day 1 postpartum (PP) till day 28 PP. Uterine morphometrical changes (uterine horn diameter; UHD and caruncle diameter; CD), uterine hemodynamics (resistance and pulsatility indices (RI and PI), systolic/ diastolic ratio (S/D), peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), blood flow volume (BFV), and blood flow rate (BFR)), and progesterone level were evaluated. Results revealed that the diameter of the uterine horn decreased rapidly from day 1 to day 10 PP (> 50%) but more steadily from day 14 to day 28 PP in both groups. After day 21 PP, there was nearly no reduction in UHD and CD in both groups. The treated group had lower values of the RI and PI (P < 0.05) than the control group. Regarding the BFR and BFV in the treated group, there was a significant increase (P < 0.05) on day 17 PP, then started to decrease till day 28 PP. While in the control group, there was a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in BFR and BFV from day 1 PP till day 28 PP. The freeze-thawing process induces osmotic changes that may affect the membrane domain location of aquaporins' (AQP) in spermatozoa. Recent studies suggest that changes in AQP3 localization allows better sperm osmo-adaptation, improving the cryoresistance. Ultra-rapid freezing is an alternative cryopreservation technique that requires less equipment than conventional freezing, and it is faster, simpler and can be used in the field. This study aimed to determine the influence of freezing-thawing rates (slow (control) vs. ultra-rapid) on AQP3 expression and location in the spermatozoa from small ruminants (sheep and goats) and its relationship with sperm cryo-damage. Spermatozoa were collected from 10 Merino rams and 10 Murciano-Granadina bucks. The presence and distribution of AQP3 were assessed by Western blotting and immunocytochemistry (ICC), employing a commercial rabbit polyclonal antibody. Sperm motility was CASA system-analyzed, and membrane and acrosome integrity assessed by fluorescence (PI/PNA-FITC). Western blotting did not detect a significant effect of freezing-thawing rate on the amount of AQP3 while ICC found freezing-thawing rate affecting AQP3 location (P < 0.05). In both species, the percentages of spermatozoa showing AQP3 in the post-acrosome region, mid-piece, and principal piece of the tail were greater in samples cryopreserved by slow freezing-thawing (control) than ultra-rapid freezing-thawing rates (P < 0.05). Spermatozoa cryopreserved using ultra-rapid freezing-thawing showed decrease motility, plasma membrane, and acrosome integrity (P < 0.05), which might be related, at least in part, to a lower expression of AQP3. The present study aimed to evaluate the genetic parameters of first parity reproductive traits. Information on 762 reproductive records on Saanen × Beetal (S × B) goats reared for approximately five decades was collected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana (1973-2020). For genetic analysis, single-trait and multiple-trait animal models were used. Gibbs sampler for animal model (GSAM) approach was used for estimating (co)variance components of reproductive traits. Six different single-trait animal models (with or without maternal and environmental effects) were used and the deviance information criterion (DIC) determined the best model. The least squares mean for age at first service (AFS), age at first kidding (AFK), service period (SP), dry period (DP), gestation length (GL), kidding interval (KI), litter weight (LW), number of kids born (NKB) and number of female kids born (NFKB) in first parity were 526.99 ± 4.86, 662.96 ± 5.03, 219.11 ± 6.25, 109.38 ± 6.00, 150.48 ± 0.27, 356.63 ± 4.80 days, 3.87 ± 0.05 kg, 1.27 ± 0.02 and 0.67 ± 0.03, respectively. Lower heritability estimates for these reproductive traits revealed a sparse scope for genetic improvement. Multivariate analysis using Model 1 was carried out to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic correlation of these nine reproductive traits. The genetic correlation of DP and SP was negatively with LW, NKB and NFKB, which is favourable as reduction in SP and DP can improve these economically important traits through indirect selection. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing egg yolk extender with sesame oil on the quality of sperm in goats following incubation at 37°C, chilling at 4°C, and freezing. Semen samples were collected from four intact male goats. The individual semen sample was divided into six groups consisting of a control group and five treatment groups with different egg yolk-to-sesame oil ratios. Seminal plasma was removed, and the sperm pellet was diluted with experimental semen extenders. The control group contained an extender of 10 % egg yolk (SO0), and the experimental extenders were composed of 8.75 % egg yolk and 1.25 % sesame oil (SO1.25); 7.5 % egg yolk and 2.5 % sesame oil (SO2.5); 5 % egg yolk and 5 % sesame oil (SO5); 2.5 % egg yolk and 7.5 % sesame oil (SO7.5); and 10 % sesame oil (SO10). Each group of semen was divided into three groups, incubated at 37°C for 1 h, chilled at 4°C for 4 h, or frozen for 24 h. Five replicates were performed. Sperm quality was evaluated, including motility, viability, and functional membrane integrity. The SO1.25 group achieved the highest sperm quality rate among the treatment groups, and the extender did not have a negative effect compared to the control. However, the total replacement of egg yolk with sesame oil in an extender resulted in the lowest sperm quality. Small ruminant farming is of socio-economic and environmental importance to many rural communities around the world. The SMARTER H2020 project aims to redefine genetic selection criteria to increase the sustainability of the sector. The objective of this study was to analyse the selection and breeding management practices of small ruminant producers and breeders, linked with socio-technical elements that shape them. The study is based on farm surveys using semi-structured interviews conducted in five countries (France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Uruguay) across 272 producers and breeders of 13 sheep and goat breeds, and 15 breed × system combinations. The information was collected in four sections. The first and second sections dealt with general elements of structure and management of the system and the flock/herd. The third section focused on selection and breeding management practices: criteria for culling and replacement of females, selection criteria for males, use of estimated breeding values and global indexes, and preferences for indexing new traits to increase the sustainability of their system. The fourth section aimed to collect socio-technical information. We used a data abstraction method to standardise the representation of these data. A mixed data factor analysis followed by a hierarchical ascending classification allowed the characterisation of three profiles of selection and breeding management: (1) a profile of producers (n = 93) of small flocks/herds, with little knowledge or use of genetic selection and improvement tools (selection index, artificial insemination, performance recording); these farmers do not feel that new traits are needed to improve the sustainability of their system. (2) a profile of producers (n = 34) of multibreed flocks/herds that rely significantly on grazing; they are familiar with genetic tools, they currently use AI; they would like the indexes to include more health and robustness characteristics, to make their animals more resistant and to increase the sustainability of their system. And (3) a profile of producers or breeders (n = 145) of large flocks/herds, with specific culling criteria; these farmers are satisfied with the current indexes to maintain the sustainability of their system. The current study sought to genetically assess the lactation curve of Alpine × Beetal crossbred goats through the application of random regression models (RRM). The objective was to estimate genetic parameters of the first lactation test-day milk yield (TDMY) for devising a practical breeding strategy within the nucleus breeding programme. In order to model variations in lactation curves, 25,998 TDMY records were used in this study. For the purpose of estimating genetic parameters, orthogonal Legendre polynomials (LEG) and B-splines (BS) were examined in order to generate suitable and parsimonious models. A single-trait RRM technique was used for the analysis. The average first lactation TDMY was 1.22 ± 0.03 kg and peak yield (1.35 ± 0.02 kg) was achieved around the 7th test day (TD). The present investigation has demonstrated the superiority of the B-spline model for the genetic evaluation of Alpine × Beetal dairy goats. The optimal random regression model was identified as a quadratic B-spline function, characterized by six knots to represent the central trend. This model effectively captured the patterns of additive genetic influences, animal-specific permanent environmental effects (c 2 ) and 22 distinct classes of (heterogeneous) residual variance. Additive variances and heritability (h 2 ) estimates were lower in the early lactation, however, moderate across most parts of the lactation studied, ranging from 0.09 ± 0.04 to 0.33 ± 0.06. The moderate heritability estimates indicate the potential for selection using favourable combinations of test days throughout the lactation period. It was also observed that a high proportion of total variance was attributed to the animal's permanent environment. Positive genetic correlations were observed for adjacent TDMY values, while the correlations became less pronounced for more distant TDMY values. Considering better fitting of the lactation curve, the use of B-spline functions for genetic evaluation of Alpine × Beetal goats using RRM is recommended., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. Cold exposure is a common stressor for newborn goats. Skeletal muscle plays an important role in maintaining whole-body homeostasis of glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying regulation of skeletal muscle of newborn goats by cold exposure remains unclear. In this study, we found a significant increase (P < 0.01) in serum glucagon levels after 24 h of cold exposure (COLD, 6°C), while glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) compared to room temperature (RT, 25°C). Additionally, we found that cold exposure reduced glycogen content (P < 0.01) in skeletal muscle. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that cold exposure activated skeletal muscle glucose metabolism pathways (including insulin resistance and the insulin signaling pathway) and mitophagy-related pathways. Cold exposure up-regulated the expression of genes involved in fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis, promoting skeletal muscle lipid deposition. Kisspeptins are neuropeptides encoded by the Kiss1 gene that was discovered as a metastasis suppressor gene in melanoma and breast cancer. Kisspeptin has pivotal functions for gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion and plays integrated roles in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. However, little is known about the peripheral expression of kisspeptin in ruminants, especially in the female reproductive tract. Here, the objectives of the current study were to investigate the spatial localization of kisspeptin and mRNA expression of Kiss1 and its receptor (Kiss1r) in the fallopian tubes (FT) and uterus of goats at varied reproductive activity (cyclic versus true anoestrous goats, n=6, each). Specimens of the uterus and FT were collected and fixed using paraformaldehyde to investigate the localizations of kisspeptin in the selected tissues by immunohistochemistry. Another set of samples was snape-frozen to identify the expressions of mRNAs encoding Kiss1 and Kiss1r using real-time PCR. Results revealed immunolocalizations of kisspeptin in the uterus and the FT. The staining of kisspeptin was found mainly in the mucosal epithelium of the uterus the FT, and the endometrial glands. Very intense staining of kisspeptin was found in the uterine and FT specimens in the true anoestrous goats compared to that in cyclic ones. The expression of mRNA encoding Kiss1 gene was significantly higher in the uterine specimen of cyclic goats (1.00±0.09) compared to that in the true anoestrous goats (0.62±0.08) (P ˂0.05), while the expression of mRNA encoding Kiss1r was significantly (P ˂0.001) higher in the uterine tissues of true anoestrous goats (1.78±0.17) compared to that in cyclic ones (1.00±0.11). In conclusion, immunohistochemical localization of kisspeptin and the expression of mRNA encoding Kiss1/Kiss1r revealed spatial changes in the uterus and FT of goats according to the reproductive potential of goats (cyclic versus true anoestrous goats). Bacground: Morphologic measurements such as body lenght, wither height, heart girth, chest width, body leght, cannon-bone circumference is used to predict carcass weight. For this purpose, estimating carcass weight with measurements of key bones such as ankle bones, which play a significant role in the balance distribution of body weight, seems possible., Objectives: The aim of this study is to create new regression models for effective carcass weight estimation by using the morphometric data of the talus and calcaneus bones of hair goats., Methods: Study materials consisted of talus and calcaneus bones obtained from abattoir products of hair goat kids (12-18 months old, 20 female and 20 male) and adult hair goats (36-48 months old, 20 female and 20 male). Morphometric measurements of the talus and calcaneus of each animal were taken by a digital caliper. Using the morphometric measurements, an index and a factor were calculated for each bone. Regression analysis and correlations were examined in IBM SPSS 21 programme., Results: As a result, statistical analysis of GLc, GLt, Bd, Calfactor and Talfactor were statistically significant on predicting carcass weight., Conclusion: Specific anatomical structures, such as certain bone measurements, such as talus and calnaneus could serve as indicators of growth performance and also carcass weight performance. In their natural environment, animals face a variety of ecological and social challenges, which might be linked to the emergence of different cognitive skills. To assess inter-specific variation in cognitive skills, we used ungulates as a study model, testing a total of 26 captive individuals across 5 different species (i.e., dwarf goats, Capra aegagrus hircus, llamas, Lama glama, guanacos, Lama guanicoe, zebras, Equus grevyi, and rhinos, Diceros bicornis michaeli). Across species, we used the same well-established experimental procedures to test individuals' performance in naïve physics tasks, i.e. object permanence, short-term spatial memory, causality, understanding of object properties, and gravity. Our results revealed that study subjects showed object permanence, were able to remember the position of hidden food after up to 60 s, and inferred the position of hidden food from the sound produced or not produced when shaking containers. Moreover, they showed an understanding of basic object properties, being able to locate objects hidden behind occluders based on their size and inclination, and could reliably follow the trajectory of falling objects across different conditions. Finally, inter-specific differences were limited to the understanding of object properties, and suggest that domesticated species as goats might perform better than non-domesticated ones in tasks requiring these skills. These results provide new information on the cognitive skills of a still understudied taxon and confirm ungulates as a promising taxon for the comparative study of cognitive evolution., (© 2024. Little is known about the key determinants of the physiological adaptations to environmental challenges and how these determinants interact. We evaluated how the response/recovery profiles to a short-term nutritional challenge during early lactation are affected by early-life nutritional strategies in dairy goats divergently selected for functional longevity. We used 72 females, split into two cohorts, daughters of Alpine bucks divergently selected for functional longevity. The females from the two lines were fed with two divergent diets, normal vs low-energy, from weaning until the middle of first gestation, and then fed with the same standard diet. Individual BW, body condition score, morphology, and plasma samples were collected from birth to first kidding. The adaptative physiological strategy to a nutritional challenge was assessed via a 2-day feed restriction challenge, during early lactation, which consisted of a five-day control period on a standard lactation diet followed by a 2-day challenge with straw-only feeding and then a 10-day recovery period on a standard lactation diet. During the challenge, DM intake, BW, milk yield (MY), and plasma and milk metabolite composition were recorded daily. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyze all traits, considering the individual nested in the cohort as a random effect and the 2 × 2 treatments (i.e., line and rearing diet) and litter size as fixed effects. Linear mixed-effects models using a piecewise arrangement were used to analyze the response/recovery profiles to nutritional challenge. Random parameters estimated for each individual, using the mixed-effects models without the fixed effects of rearing diet and genetic line, were used in a stepwise model selection based on R 2 to identify key determinants of an individual's physiological adaptations to environmental challenges. Differences in stature and body reserves created by the two rearing diets diminished during late gestation and the 5-day control period. Genetic line did not affect body reserves during the rearing phase. Rearing diet and genetic line slightly affected the recovery profiles of evaluated traits and had no effects on prechallenge and response to challenge profiles. The prekidding energy status measures and MY before challenge were selected as strong predictors of variability in response-recovery profiles of milk metabolites that have strong links with body energy dynamics (i.e., isoCitrate, ß-hydroxybutyrate, choline, cholesterol, and triacylglycerols; R 2  = 35%). Our results suggested that prekidding energy status and MY are key determinants of adult resilience and that rearing diet and genetic line may affect adult resilience insofar as they affect the animals' energy status., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). The efficiency of combining oestrous induction via a light program (16 h of light and 8 h of darkness for 60 days, ending on Day 0 - D0) with cloprostenol administration, followed by the male effect or not, was tested in acyclic Saanen goats during the non-breeding season (June/2019 to January/2020). Initially, all animals (males and females) were submitted to the described light program; 60 days after its ending (D60), the females were divided into two groups, with (G1; n = 67) or without (G2; n = 61) a male effect from D60 to D75 after the light program. At D75, both groups received two cloprostenol doses (120 μg; intramuscular) 7.5 days apart (D75 and D82.5). Artificial insemination was performed at a specific time according to the oestrous onset (approximately 68.4 ± 1.2 h between the second cloprostenol dose and IA). Ultrasound scans were performed at different intervals to evaluate follicular dynamics and confirm pregnancy. At the first cloprostenol dose (D75), the proportion of does with at least a corpus luteum (CL), which indicates resumed cyclicity, was greater in G1 than in G2 (85.2% vs. 48.8%; p < .05), although no difference was found at the second dose (p > .05). The adjusted pregnancy rates (number of pregnant goats/oestrous goats) differed between G1 and G2 (21.7% vs. 42.0%; p < .05). G1 also showed a higher frequency of functional CL (based on blood flow and morphology) compared to G2 (96.9% vs. 66.7%; p < .05) at D116. A male effect using photo-stimulated bucks after the first cloprostenol dose increased the number of does presenting CL after buck removal, and no impairment in the pregnancy rates of multiparous does was found., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. Diet selection and preference by grazing animals are determined by genetic and environmental factors that interact and affect their efficacy for managing vegetation as targeted grazers and developing animals adapted to local grazing environments. The effect of the rearing environments on the consumption of juniper (Juniperus spp.) by goats that for 15 years were divergently selected for high (J+) or low (J-) percent juniper in their diet was investigated. To test the effect of rearing environment, at the end of the breeding season, pregnant does from both selection lines were grazed on either juniper-infested (JIR) or juniper-free (JFR) rangelands until their kids were weaned at about 75 days of age. Fecal samples were analyzed with fecal near-IR spectroscopy to determine the percent juniper in the diet. Fecal samples were collected from does on JIR when their offspring were 30 days of age and at weaning. Then, does that raised kids in both rearing environments grazed a common JIR pasture for a 28-day adaptation period before collecting fecal samples. After weaning, kids from both rearing environments grazed JIR for 22 days before collecting fecal samples. The J+ does always consumed more (P < 0.001) juniper than J- does, demonstrating different maternal role models for kids reared in the JIR environment. There was no effect of rearing environment (P = 0.488) or rearing environment × selection line interaction (P = 0.096) when J- and J+ does grazed a common JIR pasture. The percentage of juniper in J- kid diets (7%) was the same regardless of the rearing environment. However, the rearing environment did affect the percentage of juniper in the diet of J+ kids, resulting in a gene-environment interaction (P = 0.022). The percentage of juniper in the diet of J+ kids reared in JFR (16%) and JIR (24%) were about two and three times higher than J- kids, respectively, indicating that genetics and the rearing environment contributed about equally to the increase in the percentage of juniper in the J+ kid diets. Regardless of the rearing environment, the J+ kids had a higher percentage of juniper in their diets than J- kids (P < 0.001). Compared to males, female kids had a higher percentage of juniper in their diets (12 vs 17%, respectively; P = 0.002). Cryopreservation of small ruminant's semen is an effective strategy for distributing spermatozoa for reproductive programs, but this process decreases the fertility potential of post-thawed spermatozoa. The aim of this research was to assess the effect of different concentrations of CoQ10 in soybean lecithin (SL)-based extender on buck semen quality during cryopreservation process. Semen samples were collected from five bucks, twice a week, then diluted in the SL-based extender containing different concentrations of CoQ10 as follows: extender containing 0 µM (control, Q0), 0.1 µM (Q0.1), 1 µM (Q1), 10 µM (Q10) and 100 µM (Q100) CoQ10. Motion characteristics, membrane functionality, abnormal morphology, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, viability, apoptotic-like changes, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation and ROS concentration were evaluated after freeze-thawing process. The Q10 resulted in greater (P≤0.05) total motility, progressive motility, average path velocity, membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity and viability compared to the other groups. Furthermore, supplementation of freezing extender with 10 µM of CoQ10 presented lower (P≤0.05) apoptotic-like changes, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation and ROS concentration compared to the other groups. Sexually hyperactive bucks are more efficient than sexually hypoactive bucks in stimulating testosterone secretion and sexual behaviour in other bucks in seasonal sexual rest by the phenomenon that we called the "buck-to-buck effect". Here, we determined whether physical separation and reduction of the duration of contact with the sexually hyperactive bucks would modify those parameters in sexually hypoactive bucks exposed to the "buck-to-buck effect". Bucks were subjected to natural day length throughout the study; this was the sexually hypoactive group. Other bucks were subjected to artificial long days (16 h of light per day) from 15 November to 15 January followed by exposure to natural day length to stimulate their sexual activity during the rest season; this was the sexually hyperactive group. In Experiment 1, we determined testosterone concentrations and sexual behaviour of six sexually hypoactive bucks separated 1.5 m from six sexually hyperactive bucks for 60 days by a metal open work fence, while a control group of six sexually hypoactive bucks was in permanent contact with six sexually hyperactive bucks. In Experiment 2, the duration of contact with sexually hyperactive males was reduced from 31 days (contact group, six bucks) to 10 days (withdraw group, seven bucks). In experiments 1 and 2, there was an effect of time (P < 0.01) and an interaction between time and groups (P < 0.05). In Experiment 1, testosterone plasma concentrations were greater in bucks in contact with sexually hyperactive bucks than in those separated from bucks at 20 and 30 days after the introduction of sexually hyperactive bucks (P < 0.01). The bucks from the contact group also displayed more nudging than bucks from the separated group from 0 to 30 days (P < 0.001). In Experiment 2, testosterone concentrations were greater in the contact group than in those from the withdraw group from 19 to 31 days after the introduction of sexually hyperactive bucks (P < 0.05). Bucks from the withdraw group displayed more nudging than the contact group 7 days after the introduction of the sexually hyperactive bucks (P < 0.05). Afterwards, bucks from the contact group displayed more nudging than the withdraw group 14, 21 and 28 days after the introduction of the sexually hyperactive bucks. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of xylazine sedation (non-sedated versus sedated conditions) and animal temperament on the fetal and maternal hemodynamics during the late stage of gestation in goats. In addition, it aimed to study the concentrations of cortisol and the echotexture of the placentome. Fourteen goats were assigned into two equal groups (n = 7, each) based on the animal's emotional temperament (calm versus nervous groups). All goats were examined for assessment of the blood flow within the fetal aorta (FA), umbilical artery (UMA), and middle uterine artery (MUA) using color-pulsed Doppler ultrasonography. Goats were exposed to light sedation using the recommended dose of xylazine (0.05 mg/Kg Bw) intramuscularly. Goats in each group were reassessed for the studied parameters after sedation. Blood samples were drawn to determine the concentrations of cortisol. Placentome echotexture pixel intensity (PXI) was evaluated using computer image analysis software. Results revealed the significant impact of the xylazine sedation on the Doppler indices of the blood flow within the measured arteries (FA, UMA, and MUA), the PXI of placentome echotexture, and cortisol concentrations. The emotional temperament of goats had significant effects on the blood flow parameters of the MUA and UMA, concentrations of cortisol, and the PXI of the placentome. The interaction effect (sedation x temperament) was noticed in the measured parameters of the UMA blood flow, fetal heart rate, and cortisol concentrations. In conclusion, xylazine sedation and emotional temperaments induced alterations in the echotexture of the placentomes as well as the hemodynamic parameters of late-stage pregnant goats without affecting the pregnancy outcomes., (© 2024. Rumen cud transfaunation re-establishes rumen micro environment and improves fermentation in recipient animals affected with digestive disorders. Preserving rumen cud or fluid will increase its availability for the treatment of rumen fermentation disorders, without having to maintain donor animals. Rumen fluid collected from healthy goats, fed standard ration having roughage 70% and concentrate 30%, was lyophilized (prefreezing -80 °C, 48 h; lyophilization -45 °C, 32 h) using 5% glycerol as cryoprotectant. The 16 S metagenome analysis of the lyophilized rumen fluid (LRF) revealed an abundance of Prevotella (33.2%). Selenomonas ruminantium (1.87%) and Megasphaera elsdenii (0.23%) were also present. Twenty-four goats having history of high grain feeding and exhibiting clinical symptoms of rumen fermentation disorders were randomly distributed into either one of the two treatment groups viz., T 1  = oral administration of LRF 31 g/animal/day and T 2  = oral administration of sodium bicarbonate (SB) 15 g/animal/day. Post intervention LRF and SB, improved animal body condition, feed intake, fecal consistency, elevated the ruminal pH at 48 h, reduced propionate and lactate at 48 h, reduced total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) and ammonia nitrogen at 24 h. Significant reduction in serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urea levels were observed even from 24 h post intervention irrespective of the treatments. LRF significantly improved acetate and decreased propionate production compared to SB. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of low-dose subarachnoid injections of 2% lidocaine (LIDO) and 0.5% bupivacaine (BUPI) in goats., Animals: 6 healthy, privately owned female goats., Methods: In this randomized blind crossover clinical trial, each goat received 0.05 mL/kg-1 of LIDO, BUPI, or sterile saline solution into the lumbosacral subarachnoid space, with a seven-day washout. Cardiorespiratory variables, rectal temperature, and somatosensory (pinprick) and motor (ataxia) functions were recorded at baseline (time 0) and 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes after injection, then every 20 minutes until the goat was standing and able to walk. Time to regain somatosensory and motor functions was compared between treatments using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and the Cox proportional hazards model. Linear mixed-effects models were used to compare cardiorespiratory variables between treatments and over time. A P value ≤ .05 was considered significant., Results: Somatosensory recovery was longer with BUPI, though not statistically significant. The median time to stand was 50 (50, 67) minutes after LIDO injection and 104 (101, 156) minutes after BUPI injection (P = .031). The median time to walk was 72 (54, 85) minutes after LIDO versus 225 (220, 245) minutes after BUPI injection (P = .031). Cardiovascular and respiratory variables showed no significant differences between treatments., Clinical Relevance: Despite prolonged ataxia with BUPI, pinprick sensation recovery did not differ. At reduced doses, both LIDO and BUPI are deemed acceptable for short procedures of the flank, pelvic limb, or tail in healthy goats.

Background: The hair follicle is a skin accessory organ that regulates hair development, and its activity varies on a regular basis. However, the significance of metabolites in the hair follicle cycle has long been unknown., Results: Targeted metabolomics was used in this investigation to reveal the expression patterns of 1903 metabolites in cashmere goat skin during anagen to telogen. A statistical analysis was used to investigate the potential associations between metabolites and the hair follicle cycle. The findings revealed clear changes in the expression patterns of metabolites at various phases and in various feeding models. The majority of metabolites (primarily amino acids, nucleotides, their metabolites, and lipids) showed downregulated expression from anagen (An) to telogen (Tn), which was associated with gene expression, protein synthesis and transport, and cell structure, which reflected, to some extent, that the cells associated with hair follicle development are active in An and apoptotic in An-Tn. It is worth mentioning that the expression of vitamin D3 and 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine decreased and then increased, which may be related to the shorter and longer duration of outdoor light, which may stimulate the hair follicle to transition from An to catagen (Cn). In the comparison of different hair follicle development stages (An, Cn, and Tn) or feeding modes (grazing and barn feeding), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that common differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) (2'-deoxyadenosine, L-valine, 2'-deoxyuridine, riboflavin, cytidine, deoxyguanosine, L-tryptophan, and guanosine-5'-monophosphate) were enriched in ABC transporters. This finding suggested that this pathway may be involved in the hair follicle cycle. Among these DEMs, riboflavin is absorbed from food, and the expression of riboflavin and sugars (D-glucose and glycogen) in skin tissue under grazing was greater and lower than that during barn feeding, respectively, suggesting that eating patterns may also alter the hair follicle cycle., Conclusions: The expression patterns of metabolites such as sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides in skin tissue affect hair follicle growth, in which 2'-deoxyadenosine, L-valine, 2'-deoxyuridine, riboflavin, cytidine, deoxyguanosine, L-tryptophan, and guanosine-5'-monophosphate may regulate the hair follicle cycle by participating in ABC transporters. Cell components soluble in neutral detergent are a diverse group, both compositionally and nutritionally. The present study aimed to evaluate production responses, behavior (eating, ruminating, and idling), and nitrogen balance of dairy goats fed different ratios of neutral detergent-soluble carbohydrate fractions. Five multiparous Alpine does with mean ± SD initial body mass of 49.5 ± 7.9 kg and 60 days of lactation were randomly assigned in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The treatments were the ratios of starch (starch associated with soluble sugar [StSS]) to neutral detergent-soluble fiber (NDSF) (StSS:NDSF): 0.89, 1.05, 1.24, 1.73, and 2.92. No effect was observed (P > 0.05) of StSS:NDSF on the intakes of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and NDSC. However, DM intake showed a quadratic behavior (P = 0.049). The ingestive behavior was affected by StSS:NDSF linearly increased (P = 0.002) the feeding efficiency. The increase in StSS:NDSF caused a linear increase in fecal (P = 0.011), urinary (P < 0.001), and milk nitrogen excretion (P = 0.024). The increase in StSS:NDSF affected (P = 0.048) milk yield and net energy lactation (P = 0.036). In conclusion, dairy goats experience reduced dry matter intake and milk yield when subjected to high-NDSC diets, specifically those above 1.24 StSS:NDSF ratio. Elevated NDSC levels in the diets lead to decreased feeding time, whereas rumination remains unaffected. Twenty Saanen third parturition dairy goats were used in an on-farm 2 × 2 factorial arrangement that ran for 12 weeks, with two grazing regimes and two concentrate types. The grazing regimes evaluated were an extensive silvopastoral native rangeland (SPR) and grazing in an abandoned agricultural land (AAL). Grazing happened between 9:00 and 17:00 h. The two types of concentrate supplement were a high protein concentrate (HP = 180 g CP/kg DM and 13 MJ ME/kg DM) or high energy concentrate (HE = 110  g CP/kg DM and 14.3 MJ ME/kg DM). Goats were milked once a day, providing 250 g of concentrate supplement per goat and day. Animal variables were fat and protein corrected milk yield recorded every day, and milk composition determined for two consecutive days at the end of each experimental week. Flora in the experimental paddocks was characerised and sampled, including grasses, shrubs, trees, legumes and cacti. The data was analysed with the R software using a mixed model with day nested in period as random effect and goat as repeated measure. The SPR had greater (P = 0.002) fat and protein corrected milk yield than AAL, with no differences between concentrate type and no interaction (P > 0.05). There was an interaction (P < 0.01) between grazing regime and concentrate type for fat content in milk, where a reduction in fat content was notorious in the SPR regime. Protein content of milk was greater (P < 0.01) in SPR with no significant effects of concentrate type or the interaction. The number of plant species in SPR was greater. The native silvopastoral system supplemented with the high energy concentrate was the strategy with higher milk yield, and protein and milk fat content, although the interaction between grazing regime and supplement was significant only for milk fat content., (© 2024. This experiment was designed to investigate the impact of curcumin-olive oil nanocomposite (CONC) supplementation on uteroplacental hemodynamics and ultrasonographic measurements as well as maternal oxidative status in midgestating goats. Twelve synchronized pregnant goats (85.58 ± 1.08 days of gestation; mean ± SD) were uniformly assigned to two groups (n = 6/group); the first group received daily oral supplementation of CONC (3 mg/kg body weight; nanocurcumin [NC] group) for 32 days, and the second group was offered physiological saline (control) following the NC group timeline. The goats of both groups were examined at 3-day intervals for middle uterine (MUA) and umbilical (UMA) arteries hemodynamics (pulsatility index [PI], resistive index [RI], systole/diastole [S/D] and blood flow rate [BFR]) and diameters, uteroplacental thickness (UPT), placentomes' diameter (PD) and echogenicity, steroid hormones (progesterone and estradiol 17β), oxidative biomarkers (total antioxidant capacity [TAC], catalase [CAT], malondialdehyde [MDA]), nitric oxide (NO) and blood cells DNA integrity. The UPT (p = 0.012) and PD (p = 0.021) values were higher in the NC group than in their counterparts' control group (D11-32). There were increases in diameter (p = 0.021 and p = 0.012) and decreases (p = 0.021, p = 0.016 and p = 0.041 [MUA]; p = 0.015, p = 0.023 and p = 0.011 [UMA] respectively) in Doppler indices (PI, RI and S/D) of the MUA and UMA in the NC group compared to the control group (D14-32). On D20-32 (MUA) and D14-32 (UMA), the NC goats had higher BFR than the control group (p = 0.021, 0.018 respectively). The means of blood cells with fragmented DNA were lower (p = 0.022) in the NC group than in the control group on Days 8 and 21 postsupplementation. There were increases in CAT and NO (D20-32; p = 0.022 and p = 0.004 respectively), and TAC (D17-32; p = 0.007) levels in the NC goats compared to the control ones. The NC group had lower (p = 0.029) concentrations of MDA than the control group on Day 20 postsupplementation onward. This study was conducted on 90 grazing Hair, Alpine × Hair F 1 (AHF 1 ), and Saanen × Hair F 1 (SHF 1 ) crossbred goats in three farms located around the Taurus Mountains in Konya, Türkiye. The study investigated variation in milk production, physico-chemical traits of milk fractions (foremilk, hindmilk and total milk), and growth traits. Genotype, parity, offspring sex, birth type, and flock factors significantly influenced milk production and quality traits of milk fractions (P < 0.05 to P < 0.01). Does with male/single offspring produced less milk, but with higher nutrient density (P < 0.05). Hindmilk was 272%, 31% and 61% richer in fat, total solids and energy content than foremilk, respectively (P < 0.001). However, the protein, lactose and solids-non-fat content of hindmilk was on average 7% lower than that of foremilk (P < 0.001). Physico-chemical quality traits of foremilk, hindmilk and total milk had a strong negative correlation with daily milk yield (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001). Live weight and average daily gains (ADG) of kids were influenced by maternal parity, flock, offspring sex and birth type (P < 0.05). The overall Kleiber ratios (KR) from birth to 2 months, birth to 3 months, birth to 6 months and 3 to 6 months of age were 21.0 ± 0.22, 17.1 ± 0.11, 10.5 ± 0.06 and 8.5 ± 0.21 g/kg of metabolic weight, respectively. Rumination is reported to be more pronounced in sheep compared to goats. This study compared the feeding and rumination behaviour of small ruminants and consisted of two experiments (E1 and E2). In E1, four sheep and four goats were offered low-quality hay (NDFom: 692 g/kg dry matter [DM]), processed to two chop lengths (long hay [LH]: 35 mm; short hay [SH]: 7 mm) in a 2 × 2 factorial (2 species × 2 chop lengths), cross-over design. In E2, the same animals were offered moderate-quality hay (NDFom: 636 g/kg DM) processed as LH and SH. Hay was offered for ad libitum consumption. Feeding and rumination behaviour was evaluated using video recordings. Aspects of rumination like chewing frequency were evaluated for 30 min per day. Faecal samples were analysed for faecal-N and particle size. There was no species effect on feed intake and organic matter digestibility (faecal N as proxy); however, goats consumed more LH than SH in E1 and E2. There was an effect of species on rumination:eating duration (R:E) ratio (higher in sheep) in E1 but not in E2, where there was a tendency for a species effect on rumination duration. In E1 and E2, sheep had a higher R:E ratio for SH than for LH. For rumination behaviour, there was a species effect for number of daily boli, chewing frequency and chews per day (more in sheep) in E1 and E2. No effect of species was found for faecal particle size. Despite much concordance, feed comminution behaviour differed in some aspects between sheep and goats. In an evolutionary context, a shift of significance of rumination could be triggered by a higher amount of abrasives in natural diets of sheep, rendering a shift of chewing towards ruminally prewashed material a rewarding strategy., (© 2024 The Authors.
