Remote Sensing (RS) technology has recently offered new and promising opportunities to analyze river systems. In this paper, we present a calibration of characteristic Hydraulic Scaling Law (HSL) using a regional database of river geomorphic features. We consistently linked discharge with channel geometry features for estimated Bankfull Channel Depth (eBCD), Active Channel Width (ACW), and Low Flow water Channel Width (LFCW), which are continuously available from RS data along the river course. We then used historical information and external sources of information on channel reaches that were relatively unaffected by human pressure over periods ranging from a few decades to a century (measured in comparable geographical areas) to infer relatively Unaltered HSLs (rUHSLs). Adopting rUHSL validated with available local historical evidence on channel geometry, we were able to assess historical changes in channel geometry consistently over the entire region and within the studied temporal window. The case study was conducted for the Po basin in the Piedmont Region, north‐west Italy. From our analysis, it emerges that regionally 74% of the river network has riverbed incisions exceeding 1 m, while 66% of channels have halved their historical widths with a total of 617 ha of land subtracted from the active channel. LFCW is, on average, wider in Alpine rivers compared with those located in the North Apennines. Although it is currently not possible to measure the accuracy of these estimates, the evidence generated is coherent with available historical information, characteristic hydraulic scaling laws, evidence from relatively unaltered reaches and the available literature on local fluvial systems. This methodology provides robust, novel and quantitative information regarding decadal to secular channel changes that have occurred on a regional scale. This new layer of information enriches our ability to rationally address assessments of large‐scale past and future channel trajectories. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. International audience; The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD, October 2000) mandated that the Member States of the European Union achieve the general objective of protection of aquatic ecology by 2015. European rivers and streams have to attain “good ecological status” through the preservation and restoration of aquatic environments. Member will have to ensure environmental continuity through “the adequate distribution of fish species and transport of sediments”. In France, more than 61,000 transverse structures – mill dams, weirs, diversion gates – have been identified on rivers as being obstacles to ecological and sedimentary continuity. Because of their historical occupation by societies, rivers flowing in the Paris area have long been anthropized and artificialized. River courses, channel shape, sediment transport and hydrological regime modifications have tremendously transformed the hydrosystems surrounding the city of Paris. The Merantaise’s catchment is one of this low energy river watershed, near Paris, that have been modified by historical engineering, especially during medieval-modern times and by the building of the Versailles Castle (XVIIth century). The hydraulic infrastructures are still there and impact the hydromorphogical conditions of the river (incision, lateral erosion, . . . ). In addition to these ancient pressures a rapid and massive urbanization of the suburban areas has applied a new type of constraint to the hydrosystems in recent decades. This undermines the balance that was established following ancient engineering and disturbs the current functioning of the valley. These new types of land occupation have significantly altered the ecological circumstances and transformed the hydrological responses of rivers. In this study, we therefore seek to understand these processes of successive adjustments (ancient and recent) of a small river from the urban margins of the Orge watershed (to the south of Paris). We use a multi-scalar spatial and temporal approach to reconstruct the hydromorphological circumstances ancient and current, by hydrological chronicles and archives documentation.

DYNAMIC MODELLING ,[SDE]Environmental Sciences ,MACROPHYTE ,ECOHYDROLOGY - Abstract
International audience; Ecohydrology is a growing field of science that aims to quantify the interplay between water as a nutrient carrier and bio-assimilation processes (Zalewski 2001). Its basic assumption relies on the fact that water pollution can be processed efficiently by biota along the water pathways by regulating abiotic and biotic controlling factors at key locations. The most important feature to design the so called dual regulation is the non linear time response of biota to controlling factors. Biota refer either to aquatic vegetation or micro-organisms. We here develop a method to analyze and model the response dynamic of biota to abiotic factors evolution at a reach scale. In a first step a natural growing function is fitted to observed biotic data. Then residues to this model are processed in a second step with a memory analysis technique that helps to identify key abiotic factors. In a third step, a dynamic model is build by combining the natural growth functionl with its abiotic controlling factors. Model is then run at a daily time step. Data come from a reach of the river Dordogne. Reach was 250 m long and 100 m wide. Vegetation species and abundance, water level, velocity and temperature were sampled during five years several times a year. Most abundant taxonomic groups of aquatic macrophytes in our samplings were phanerogams and algae. The good model fitting over years with observed data confirms the mixing methodology of biotic and abiotic factors can serve the dynamic process analysis. An equivalent N uptake function is then processes considering the macrophyte biomass. Memory analysis results indicate that Phanerogam are mainly linked to water temperature and water depth variations that occurred in the past 10 days but also depend on a seasonal time scale. Algae variations are closely linked to the antecedent day(s) variations in flow velocity. First conclusions are drawn on the methodology and a discussion is open on controlling factors of the nitrogen uptake that would be regulated to increase the yearly overall natural N uptake at the reach scale.

BIOLOGICAL ALTERATION ,[SDE]Environmental Sciences ,Ingenieurwissenschaften (620) ,BANKFULL DISCHARGE ,CHANNEL MORPHOLOGY ,RIVER RESTORATION - Abstract
International audience; The aim of this study is to quantify the physical alterations of alluvial rivers and reach a better understanding of the links between these alterations and the ecological quality (derived from the European Fish Index, EFI) of river channels. This is an essential step towards river restorations, which are increasingly being considered in order to meet good ecological status as defined by the European Water Framework Directive. The methodology of this study involves comparing physically altered river reaches (mainly reshaped rivers) to a reference model built from data collected on 28 non-altered sites in the chalky parts of the Seine Basin (northern France). The physical quality of the reaches is determined from eight morphological variables such as the bankfull discharge, the channel width, the width/depth ratio and the depth of pools present. These variables are estimated at the reach scale (i.e. about 20 times the channel width) from topographical surveys and discharge measurements. The hydrological regime (at mean and bankfull flow) and river substrate (sediment composition, size and transport rate) are also considered as morphological drivers. Our study shows that a reference model for natural river reaches may be built from their morphological characteristics in regions with homogenous geology and hydrology. Physically altered reaches have statistically different characteristics from the reference model. From biological data (relative to fish populations) the structure of the fish communities in natural and altered reaches was characterised and fish index was calculated, showing a link between physical alteration and ecological quality.

BASSIN SEINE NORMANDIE ,[SDE]Environmental Sciences - Abstract

The Dordogne river basin is drained by eutrophic waters resulting from the intensive agricultural exploitation of its lands. It flows slowly during the low water season. A small bottom gradient exists in its alluvial flat land. The development of macrophytes may be observed from year to year in the river. This process may reduce the amount of nutrients in the water, which can impair the natural aquatic ecosystem and also limit other water services like boating or fishing. The dynamic process of growth and expansion seems to depend mainly on physical determinants, when nutrients are not a limiting factor. Therefore, can the physical determinants be managed in order to control macrophyte development? A multidisciplinary research program implemented in France attempted to quantify, on one hand, the impact of the history of flow conditions on the life cycle of macrophytes and, on the other, the impact of macrophytes on flow resistance.; La présentation reprend les résultats des travaux et mesures réalisés dans le cadre d'une action MAITRISE.

- Abstract
Dams are ones of the main sources of anthropogenic disturbance to the ecology and geomorphology of rivers. The aim of the present study is to understand the mechanisms underlying their influence on downstream bedload transport in three gravel-bed rivers in the Morvan massif, France. The hydrological disturbance caused by four dams is examined at a short (2.4-2.7 years) and longer (21-28 year) time scale. At the short time scale, bedload displacement was monitored (RFID) at 8 study sites around the dams. Morpho-sedimentary characterization of the bed substrate was performed at the study sites and combined with analyses of the long profile evolution and the current cross profile. The flood regime has been to a varying extent durably reduced by the dams depending on their size and purpose: the mean annual maximum flood was reduced by 9 to 40% and the number of flood events by 27 to 73.5% over the 21-28 years period. Sediment availability and loose structures were found above the dams and below medium-sized dams (<10 m) with a null or moderate influence on the flood regime (configuration I). Sediment deficit, consolidated structures, bed coarsening and vegetation encroachment were observed within 20 km downstream of large dams (>15 m) influencing strongly or moderately the flood regime (configuration II). These morpho-sedimentary features significantly affect the current bedload dynamics, creating conditions more or less favorable for the mobility of the present and incoming bedload. The cumulative mean bedload distances of RFID tracers in configuration II are significantly lower (6.8-45 m) than in configuration I (78-315 m). The current flow management of the dams has only a moderate effect on the bedload distances recorded, as shown by the mean virtual bedload velocities, which confirm the different dynamics (0.42-0.91 m/d, and 0.62-6.44 m/d, for II and I respectively). Our results demonstrate how modifications of dams on flow and bedload discharge altered the downstream morphology, but also that this inherited morphology may now be the main controlling factor of bedload transport. These findings invite further discussion about the most appropriate ways to restore rivers downstream of dams when dealing with multi-decadal inherited morphological features., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
The paper emphasizes the main lessons learned from hydromorphological monitoring following the removal of a medium-sized dam (7.29 m) located on a medium energy gravel bed river over a four year period (2015-2019). The Pierre Glissotte dam was previously located on the upper Yonne river (Morvan massif), where it was an obstacle to sediment continuity and was almost completely filled with sand and silts. The dam was removed in two steps, the first in July 2015 and the second in October 2017. Several methods were used (topographical surveys, SFM photogrammetry, RFID tracking, hydrological monitoring) to characterize river adjustments, i.e. the nature of the morpho-sedimentary dynamics, their rates, their temporal and spatial variations, and their control mechanisms. The results highlight the complex and nonlinear response of the Yonne river and the relevance of a regular prolonged monitoring. The changing patterns in space and over time, underline the vast range of uncertainties surrounding this type of restoration and the difficulty involved in predicting post-removal hydromorphology around the dam (return to pre-dam functioning, no changes, new equilibrium conditions). For instance, up to now, the study shows that intense morpho-sedimentary dynamics in the reservoir and effective restoration of bedload continuity do not necessarily lead to changes in the downstream conditions (bed mobility and morphological configuration) previously shaped under the influence of the dam, thus mitigating the success of the river restoration operation., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Physical habitat degradation is prevalent in river ecosystems. Although still little is known about the ecological consequences of altered hydromorphology, understanding the factors at play can contribute to sustainable environmental management. In this study we aimed to identify the hydromorphological features controlling a key ecosystem function and the spatial scales where such linkages operate. As hydromorphological and chemical pressures often occur in parallel, we examined the relative importance of hydromorphological and chemical factors as determinants of leaf breakdown. Leaf breakdown assays were investigated at 82 sites of rivers throughout the French territory. Leaf breakdown data were then crossed with data on water quality and with a multi-scale hydromorphological assessment (i.e. upstream catchment, river segment, reach and habitat) when quantitative data were available. Microbial and total leaf breakdown rates exhibited differential responses to both hydromorphological and chemical alterations. Relationships between the chemical quality of the water and leaf breakdown were weak, while hydromorphological integrity explained independently up to 84.2% of leaf breakdown. Hydrological and morphological parameters were the main predictors of microbial leaf breakdown, whereas hydrological parameters had a major effect on total leaf breakdown, particularly at large scales, while morphological parameters were important at smaller scales. Microbial leaf breakdown were best predicted by hydromorphological features defined at the upstream catchment level whereas total leaf breakdown were best predicted by reach and habitat level geomorphic variables. This study demonstrates the use of leaf breakdown in a biomonitoring context and the importance of hydromorphological integrity for the functioning of running water. It provides new insights for environmental decision-makers to identify the management and restoration actions that have to be undertaken including the hydromorphogical features that should be kept in minimal maintenance to support leaf breakdown., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
