2. Autonomous Agent Navigation Model Based on Artificial Potential Fields Assisted by Heuristics.

Abstract

Featured Application: Navigation of autonomous agents without a source of complete and global knowledge of the environment, such as Global Positioning Systems. When autonomous agents are deployed in an unknown environment, obstacle-avoiding movement and navigation are required basic skills, all the more so when agents are limited by partial-observability constraints. This paper addresses the problem of autonomous agent navigation under partial-observability constraints by using a novel approach: Artificial Potential Fields (APF) assisted by heuristics. The well-known problem of local minima is addressed by providing the agents with the ability to make individual choices that can be exploited in a swarm. We propose a new potential function, which provides precise control of the potential field's reach and intensity, and the use of auxiliary heuristics provides temporary target points while the agent explores, in search of the position of the real intended target. Artificial Potential Fields, together with auxiliary search heuristics, are integrated into a novel navigation model for autonomous agents who have limited or no knowledge of their environment. Experimental results are shown in 2D scenarios that pose challenging situations with multiple obstacles, local minima conditions and partial-observability constraints, clearly showing that an agent driven using the proposed model is capable of completing the navigation task, even under the partial-observability constraints. Abstract

Featured Application: This work proposes a working set of rules for translating English sentences into the formal language of non-axiomatic logic (NAL). The proposed translation takes advantage of several linguistic tools for pre-processing and can be used for commonsense reasoning via non-deductive inferences formalized in NAL. Non-axiomatic logic (NAL) is a term-based, non-monotonic, multi-valued logic with evidence-based formal semantics. All those characteristics position NAL as an excellent candidate for modeling natural language expressions and supporting artificial agents while performing knowledge discovery and commonsense reasoning tasks. In this article, we propose a set of rules for the automatic translation of natural language (NL) text into the formal language of non-axiomatic logic (NAL). Several free available tools are used to support a previous linguistic analysis, and a common sense ontology is used to populate a background knowledge base that helps to delimit the scope and the semantics of logical formulas translated. Experimentation shows our set to be the most comprehensive NL-to-NAL translation rule set known so far. Furthermore, we included an extensive set of examples to show how our proposed set of rules can be used for translating a wide range of English statements with varying grammatical structures. Abstract

Artificial music tutors are needed for assisting a performer during his/her practice time whenever a human tutor is not available. But for these artificial tutors to be intelligent and fulfill the role of a music tutor, they have to be able to identify errors made by the performer while playing a musical sequence. This task is not a trivial one, since all musical activities are considered as open-ended domains. Therefore, not only there is no unique correct way of performing a musical sequence, but also the analysis made by the tutor has to consider the development level of the performer, the difficulty level of the performed musical sequence, and many other variables. This paper describes an ongoing research that uses cascading connected layers of symbolic processing as the core of a human-performed error identification and characterization module able to overcome the complexity of the studied open-ended domain.
