Background: The COVID-19 pandemic affected the health of millions of people, both directly through infection and indirectly through delayed diagnosis and treatment of non-COVID-19 illnesses. The aim of this study was to check the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis in children. Methods: The study was carried out at the Department of Paediatric Surgery of the Marciniak Hospital (Wrocław, Poland) and covered two periods, the pre-pandemic one (P1, 01/03/2019–29/02/2020) and the pandemic one (P2, 01/03/2020–28/02/2021). Results: The number of admissions of patients with suspected appendicitis and observation-only patients decreased during the pandemic (400/289 and 226/160, respectively). Although the number of operated children was similar during both analyzed periods (P1: 174, P2: 160), the rate of surgical interventions was significantly higher during P2 (55.4%) than during P1 (43.5%) (χ2 test: p = 0.00272). The values of the variables quantifying disease progression and severity of inflammation, selected inflammation-related parameters detected by laboratory blood tests, latencies from the onset of symptoms to the admission and from the admission to the operation, and total duration of hospitalization did not differ significantly between the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Conclusions: These results show that the COVID-19 pandemic led to more rigorous and careful triage of pediatric patients suspected of acute appendicitis that did not have a negative impact on patient outcomes. Presence of amino acid neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) in ant brains was reported in very few studies. To learn more about factors influencing GABA and Glu levels in ant brains, we applied high-performance liquid chromatography to measure levels of these compounds in single brains of workers of 2 ant species, Myrmica ruginodis (subfamily Myrmicinae) and Formica polyctena (subfamily Formicinae) taken from queenright/queenless colony fragments and tested in dyadic aggression tests consisting of an encounter with a nestmate, an alien conspecific or a small cricket. Brain glutamate levels were higher than those of GABA in both tested species. Brain GABA levels (in μmol/brain) and GABA : Glu ratio were higher in M. ruginodis (a submissive species) than in F. polyctena (a dominant, aggressive species) in spite of smaller brain weight of M. ruginodis. Brain glutamate levels (in μmol/brain) did not differ between the tested species, which implies that glutamate concentration (in μmol/mg of brain tissue) was higher in M. ruginodis. Queen absence was associated with increased worker brain GABA levels in F. polyctena, but not in M. ruginodis. No significant effects of opponent type were discovered. As GABA agonists enhance friendly social behavior in rodents, we hypothesize that elevated brain GABA levels of orphaned workers of F. polyctena facilitate the adoption of a new queen. This is the first report providing information on GABA and glutamate levels in single ant brains and documenting the effects of queen presence/absence on brain levels of amino acid neurotransmitters in workers of social Hymenoptera. Social insect workers usually participate first in intranidal tasks (i.e. act as nurses within the nest) and then switch to extranidal tasks and become foragers. However, foragers sometimes switch back again to brood care and become reverted nurses. Behavioural and physiological correlates of the transition nurse-forager (behavioural maturation) and forager-reverted nurse (behavioural reversion) are relatively well known in the honeybee, although they are less explored in ants. To understand better the role of biogenic amines in ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion, the levels of octopamine (OA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) are examined in the brains of nurses, foragers and reverted nurses of the red wood ant Formica polyctena Först. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Brain OA levels and the ratios OA : DA and OA : 5-HT are higher in nurses than in foragers and reverted nurses. Reverted nurses and foragers do not differ significantly with respect to brain biogenic amine levels and amine ratios. Biogenic amine levels in brains of workers of F. polyctena are thus maturation-related rather than task-related. This is one of the first studies of neurochemical correlates of ant behavioural maturation and the first attempt to identify neurobiological correlates of ant behavioural reversion. The data obtained provide further evidence that neurobiological processes underlying honeybee and ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion reveal important differences.
