Abstract

Integrated optics provides an ideal test bed for the emulation of quantum systems via continuous-time quantum walks. Here we study the evolution of two-photon states in an elliptic array of waveguides. We characterise the photonic chip via coherent-light tomography and use the results to predict distinct differences between temporally indistinguishable and distinguishable two-photon inputs which we then compare with experimental observations. Our work highlights the feasibility for emulation of coherent quantum phenomena in three-dimensional waveguide structures., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

By weakly measuring the polarization of a photon between two strong polarization measurements, we experimentally investigate the correlation between the appearance of anomalous values in quantum weak measurements, and the violation of realism and non-intrusiveness of measurements. A quantitative formulation of the latter concept is expressed in terms of a Leggett-Garg inequality for the outcomes of subsequent measurements of an individual quantum system. We experimentally violate the Leggett-Garg inequality for several measurement strengths. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that there is a one-to-one correlation between achieving strange weak values and violating the Leggett-Garg inequality., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This article presents information on methods used for photonic quantum information processing. A variety of approaches have been pursued to produce polarization-entangled photon pairs via the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion, including post-selected 2-photon interference single-crystal Type-II phase-matching, two-crystal Type-I phase-matching, and several interferometric schemes. The essence of the two-crystal technique is that diagonally polarized pump photons are given an opportunity to down-convert in one of two adjacent perpendicularly oriented nonlinear crystals. The downconversion process can therefore take place in either the first crystal, producing a pair of horizontally polarized photons, or in the second crystal, producing a pair of vertically polarized photons. As long as the two processes are indistinguishable. One application of a source of tunable high-fidelity entanglement is Remote State Preparation.

Abstract

The photon field dynamics of a single non-decaying mode of a quantized electromagnetic field in a binomial state interacting with a three-level system is studied non-perturbatively. It is found that the phenomenon of collapse and revival is not only sensitive to the initial photon statistics, but also to photon density, coupling constants and detunings.

Abstract

We calculate the vacuum-field radiation pressure on two parallel, perfecting conducting plates. The modes outside the plates push the plates together, those confined between the plates push them apart, and the net effect is the well-known Casimir force. Implications of this result for the form of the Pointing vector in quantum electrodynamics are discussed. Abstract

We investigate the estimation of a small interaction parameter from the outcomes of weak quantum measurements implemented by the interaction. The relation of weak values and sensitivity is explained and the different contributions of postselected results are identified using experimental data. The results show how weak values can be used to control the distribution of input state sensitivity between different postselected outcomes., Replace with the published version.
